FALL 2023

CENTRAL BAPTIST

COLLEGE TRANSFORMING LIVES SINCE 1952

THE BMA PROMISE President Terry Kimbrow In their June 2-3, 2023 meeting, the Central Baptist College Board of Trustees approved a “tuition free” scholarship program for all members of the Baptist Missionary Association of America churches. The BMA Promise is both a recruiting and retention incentive. I’ll admit, this is a huge leap of faith for us. However, over the years, the loyalty to the institution, founded by our churches right here in Arkansas, has waned. The facts are quite sobering: Only 9% of CBC students checked the BMAA box on their application when asked with what church they are affiliated. That may be misleading, because some of them may not even know they are members of a BMA church. I’m counting on the BMA Promise to change that! The Scholarship will benefit any student of any age who has been a member of a BMAA church for at least one year, verified by a form completed by the pastor of his/her church. The BMA Promise is designed to make up the gap between federal and state grants and billed tuition (the Scholarship does not cover fees or room and board and does not apply to PACE or Online). To be eligible, students must complete the entire admissions process online (or contact the Department of Admissions at 501.329.6873 or email admissions@cbc.edu), submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), and register for classes. Learn more by visiting cbc.edu/bmapromise. We are committed to making college affordable for evey student. However, the BMA Promise rewards members of the churches that founded the institution over seventy years ago. It just makes sense! Though we announced the BMA Promise very late in the recruiting season, we had twenty-five students qualify for the new scholarship. I expect that number to increase significantly in the spring and fall of 2024. Your contribution of any amount will help sustain this vital program. Use the envelope included or go to cbc.edu/give. Choose the “Scholarship Fund” and type BMA Promise in the comments section. If you have questions about giving to CBC, call me on my direct line at 501-205-8818 or send a message to tkimbrow@cbc.edu.

STUDENTS ON A MISSION Missions is very important here at CBC, and many of our students have a heart for sharing the gospel with the world. This year, several students, along with some faculty and alumni, had the chance to go on mission trips over the summer and are excited to have received the opportunity to serve. Several people went to Romania over the summer to work alongside the Risner family, Candra Barnett, and Romanian Pastor Dani Bagosi in serving the people of the area through several VBS events. Alumnus Daniel Hopp went on this trip and was very moved by seeing the culture and the work God was doing. “It was so humbling to attend a worship service on our first Sunday there,” Daniel said, “God was being worshiped in multiple languages at the same time, and I was overwhelmed with how great our God truly is.” Seniors Hannah Varnado and Dillon Hall also got the opportunity to serve in Romania and found joy in the experience. Dillon was able to teach Bible stories to some of the Romanian and Gypsy children. The Gypsies especially left an impact on Dillon when he learned how they were mistreated and saw their need for the gospel. “This experience helped me realize how important mission work truly is, and I hope God provides me with more opportunities to help share His Word throughout the entire world,” Dillon said. Hannah spent a month and a half living in Romania helping with mission work. Like Daniel, one of her favorite experiences was hearing worship in multiple languages; and through the trip, she gained a new perspective on the world and its need for the gospel. “An eye-opening moment for me was seeing people as people,” Hannah said, “They are just normal people who have jobs, they get sick, and they need Jesus just as much as I do.” Adjunct professor Margaret Anderson helped lead the group of students in Romania and was encouraged by the work that God did. “God's presence was evident throughout the trip, not only in the way our students ministered to the children but also in the way God personally worked in the hearts of our students,” Margaret said. While many served in Romania, several other students also went on mission trips to other parts of the world. Junior Abby Wilson took a trip to Milan, Italy where she and nine other women ministered in the area and spread the gospel on college campuses. While she was nervous with this being her first mission trip, Abby was encouraged by the experience she had. “This was such an incredibly rewarding trip, and I am so thankful for God’s provision to get me there,” Abby said. Senior Cayce Harper helped co-lead a group of people on a mission trip to Costa Rica. The group visited different churches and helped with VBS’s while they were there. They also helped hand out flyers making connections with people and sharing the gospel along the way. “Costa Rica was one of my favorite mission trips I have had the privilege to go on,” Cayce said. Lily Brister also went to Costa Rica and helped serve in many different areas. She got the opportunity to help lead worship a few times, and despite concerns over the language barrier, she felt that God helped her overcome all obstacles to serve Him. “Throughout the week, God taught me to obey Him even when I don’t understand,” Lily said, “I also realized how important it is to serve others all of the time. I didn’t have to be in a different country on a mission trip to serve. I can serve every single day.”

New Music Education Degree By Dr. Gary McAllister Vice President for Academic Affairs During a time when many schools are trimming fine arts, Central Baptist College is expanding its programs in this area. Music has always been an integral part of the curriculum at CBC, and the institution has produced many graduates who have led music ministries in churches or pursued other careers in the music industry, but training has been lacking for teacher preparation. However, the Arkansas Department of Education and the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation recently approved two new programs for CBC: Bachelor of Music Education – Vocal and Bachelor of Music Education – Instrumental. Students who have dreamed of becoming a choir or band director can now begin their journey toward licensure at CBC. Music degrees enrich the cultural life of a college campus by typically offering a variety of concerts and performances, which are generally open to the public. These events provide students, faculty, and community members with an opportunity to experience the beauty of music. It also gives music students an opportunity to hone their craft and express themselves through music or musical theater. They can go on to become performers, worship leaders, private music instructors, and musical directors. Music education degrees prepare students to become effective music teachers. In a music education program, students learn about the history and theory of music, as well as how to teach music to students of all ages and skill levels. They also gain hands-on experience teaching music in a variety of settings. If your desire is to make music, develop your musical talent and ability, entertain others, lead in worship, or teach music, CBC’s Fine Arts Department is the place for you! Donna Bradley has started her first year as an Associate Professor of Music and Director of Instrumental Music. She has been teaching the courses in this new Music Education major. This semester, she has taught Special Methods in Vocal Pedagogy, Special Methods in Secondary Instruments, Teaching Secondary Vocal and Instrumental Education, and Special Methods in Elementary Instruments which is pictured on the left and above. Mrs. Bradley also conducts the band and Women’s Chorus. “The students I have in Women’s Chorus, Band, and my courses are all so much fun to teach and everyone here at CBC has made my transition from K-12 so smooth! I love the atmosphere of the school in general and especially of the music department,” says Mrs. Bradley.

Athletic Testimonies

Sheridan Rogers

is a junior volleyball player from Russellville, Arkansas. She is majoring in Kinesiology with an emphasis in Exercise Science. She plans to go to OT school and earn her Doctorate. Sheridan says her favorite part about being on the volleyball team at CBC is growing not only as teammates on the court, but also her teammates becoming some of her closest friends. She also loves the opportunity to be able to relate with other athletes while still being connected in other ways on campus. She serves on the Student Orientation Staff and Student Activities Board and she is a part of the Medical Professions Society and the chapel worship band. Besides volleyball, Sheridan chose CBC because she wanted to be in a classroom where she wasn’t just another face to the professor. She wanted to intentionally connect and know they cared about her. She also wanted to be in a place that surrounded her in a Godly community and pushed her to grow in her faith.

Trey Tippen

is a sophomore basketball player from Sherwood, Arkansas. He is majoring is Kinesiology with an emphasis in Exercise Science. After graduation, Trey’s goal is to become an athletic trainer. Trey says his favorite part about being on the basketball team is that it feels like a family and his teammates are like his brothers. Other than basketball, Trey chose CBC because of the smaller class size and his love for the city of Conway. He loves how small the campus is and that he has a chance to connect with everyone. Trey is involved in several campus organizations like Student Orientation Staff and chapel band. He is also a Resident Assistant in Dickson Hall.

Fall Chapel: A BIBLICAL WORLDVIEW Central Baptist College president, Terry Kimbrow, addressed the students on Wednesday, August 23, at the first chapel service of the academic year where He announced this semester’s chapel theme… A Biblical World View. He asked the students, “What is the definition of world view? Do you know? Can you tell others what you believe about the world around you? Worldview is expressed through the lens in which you see the world.” He noted that his worldview had changed over his lifetime. “As I have grown in my relationship with God, my worldview has changed.” To introduce the fall chapel series, his message for chapel was, “The Foundation of Central Baptist College.” He briefly addressed the twelve articles of the “Doctrinal Statement of the Baptist Missionary Association of America.” He assured the students that while the wording of the “Doctrinal Statement” has changed over the years—the basis for the beliefs cannot change. “It is,” he said, “based on the inerrant, unchanging, living Word of God.” Along with unveiling the Chapel theme, President Kimbrow presented each student with a new Worldview Study Bible. This Bible is published by Holman and written in the Christian Standard Version and contains more than 130 essays by notable Christian scholars, center-column references, and extensive worldview study notes. The gift was underwritten by an anonymous donor. He told the students, “This book will change your life if you let it!” He ended with a challenge: “Take care of it; cherish it; read it; and obey it.”
