Predident 5 It gives me a personal degree of satisfaction to pen these lines for this year's production of THE TOWERS. 1 am happy to be a part of Central Baptist College, and shall look forward with eager antic

ipation

to receiving my copy of THE TOWERS. This year's pro

duction will reflect by means of pictures another exciting year in the history of Central Baptist College. All of us here at Central will spend hours of silent satisfaction reviewing this pictorial history of our school.

My congratulations are hereby offered to a diligent staff and a consecrated student body who shall make this addition of THE TOWERS a reality. May this annual ever live to tell the story of Central Baptist College, a school with Christian ideals, dedicated to the worthy task of training young men and women for Kingdom service. As a newcomer to the lovely campus of Central, I hereby pledge

my best effort in helping make this school exactly what we want it to be. May heaven's blessings be upon our "school family" as we all work together for an even greater Central Baptist College. In His service, Gerald D. Kellar

We are pleased to present this year's book to the reader as another chapter in the continuing story of Central Baptist College. Here you will find the pictures of our student body and some of the activities of this year.

The quality of Central's academic offerings and the quality of the

student body are reflected in these pages. The administration and faculty feel a deep sense of reward for having the privilege of investing in the future of our students.

The teaching of the first two of the "3 R's" makes freshman English a very important course. No stu dent can succeed in college if he cannot read; very few, if any, will succeed if they cannot write clear, meaningful, reasonably correct sentences. In addition to teachii^ the student how to read better, freshman

understand the English language in order to use it effectively. Words and Idioms and Advanced Grammar are taught. The Bible as Literature is also of special interest to preachers. The third basic area of communication, after

reading and writing, is speaking. Principles of Speech is designed to help students understand what is neces sary for one to be a good speaker and to give practice in public speaking. Homiletics tries to teach preachers how to design and deliver better sermons.

What is Mathematics? A dilemma? A necessity? A game? A science? A tool? Mathematics is certainly differently defined by different people. Yet all of us are greatly indebted to the science of mathematics.

Mathematics is a necessity. At least this is true unless we are willing to revert to the primitive forms of civilization. The automobile, the telephone, the supersonic airplane, the kitchen stove, the hair dryer; all of these and many other useful items are available to us in part because of the development of Mathematics. Mathematics

is a game. Some of the important and interesting

developrpents in mathematics have come through men who enjoyed

it as a pasttime. Parlor games are often mathematical puzzles.

Such puzzles can be easily developed with a minimum knowledge of Paul W. Byers

Head of Department, M.S.E. Arkansas State Teachers College

algebra. Algebra had its beginning in the correspondence of men who enjoyed presenting difficult problems to each other. Tourna ments were held where each contestant sought to work the other contestants' problems and develop problems that others could not solve. Some people will always enjoy the recreational aspect of mathematics.

To many successful people mathematics is a tool. The engineer, the scientist, the accountant, the architect and various other types of professional people find mathematics an essential and productive tool. Many developments in technology have been forced to wait for

further progress in mathematics. Conversely, research by scientists has produced additions to the field of mathematics.

To the mathematician, an amazingly large number of persons

find mathematics a drudgery and consequently a dilemma. Like wise, the mathematicians problems in other fields amaze people in those fields. Certainly we arrive in this world with different talents

and subsequently develop different likes and dislikes. But elementary mathematics is in reach of more than just the mathematically tal ented. Everyone cannot develop into mathematicians - a true dilemma

this would be but everyone can profit by a basic knowledge of math ematics.

Mathematics is the friend and helper of many. Like it and it will be a lifetime friend. Despise it and it will be of little benefit.

The Business Department attempts, through such courses as

General Business and Economics, to present the ideas of Cap

italism and Free Enterprise; the types of business organization; the different kinds of business, such as retailing, insurance, banking, manufacturing, etc.; and how our over-all economy operates. The laws dealing with or regulating business are

%

presented in Business Law.

The objective is that the student will become more aware of

the role that business plays in our society and will become more appreciative of business.

Through the skill courses—Typing, Shorthand, and Ac counting—, the student acquires the necessary skills to enable him to earn a living for himself and his family. Joyce N. Garrison

Central Baptist College Library is the educational center

of Central Baptist College. Its purpose is not only to provide books, periodicals, and any other instructional materials to support the academic program of the college, but also to

encourage the formation of a lifelong habit of reading. To carry out this purpose the library is concerned with such things as the selection and acquisition of library materials which have become accepted tools of instruction;

1L

the preparation and care of these materials, through such processes as cataloging, classification, and binding, in sup port of the courses taught; the provision of individual and group assistance to readers in the use of library materials,

placing the proper tools in the student's hands, showing him how to proceed, and standing by to help when help is needed; and the encouragement of reading on the part of students in connection with their courses as well as for

These functions do not complete the list, but they are the basic ones, and they illustrate that almost all functions

of Central College Library are very closely connected with the major purposes of the college in preparing the student to become a better citizen.
