From the Desk of the Chairman of the Board

Nancy Parker Welcome to the exciting 2013 Central City Opera Festival. On behalf of the Board of Directors, I’d like to thank you for coming and hope you’ll enjoy our new format. This summer we offer the best of both worlds with two productions in the historic 550-seat Opera House and, for the first time, we will be presenting all performances of our third production in the 2,800-seat Buell Theatre at the Denver Performing Arts Complex. There is a precedent for performing in Denver—in 1978, Central City Opera produced Salome, the first opera to be performed in the newly completed Boettcher Concert Hall. Last season we brought two performances of Oklahoma! to the DU’s Newman Center for the Performing Arts. Many of you attended A Journey of the Human Spirit in Denver last January. We collaborated on that project with the Colorado Symphony, Ballet Nouveau Colorado, Newman Center Presents and Mizel Arts and Cultural Center at the JCC. We hope to continue our year-round presence in both Central City and Denver to bring our patrons new and exciting offerings, as well as to attract a new and expanded audience.

We will open the 2013 Festival in Central City with Rossini’s The Barber of Seville followed by Ned Rorem’s operatic adaptation of Thornton Wilder’s classic American play Our Town. In August, we move to the Buell Theatre in Denver with Kern and Hammerstein’s popular musical Show Boat. We hope you will encourage your friends and neighbors to join you for these musical and theatrical experiences like no other. Our history is built around our beautiful Opera House and our preservation efforts in Central City. We will continue performing world class opera in Central City, but need the advantage of a larger facility with more seating capacity in order to keep up with rising expenses. We are also very proud to announce that our General/Artistic Director, Pat Pearce has just been awarded the Bonfils-Stanton Foundation Award in Arts and Humanities. Congratulations to him on this prestigious honor. Sincerely,

Nancy Parker Chairman of the Board

From the Desk of the General/Artistic Director

Pelham G. Pearce Hi and thank you all for coming to the 2013 Festival! Central City Opera faces challenges which are shared by most for-and non-profit companies in this country and around the world. How do we adapt to the new world in which we live? How do we change our approach to attract broader/newer audiences in order to fulfill our mission to provide this art form to future generations? Big questions, right? Well, we are moving ahead with our experimentation in order to discover the answer(s) to our particular question.

Photo © Central City Opera House Association Archives.

Pelham G. Pearce was selected in 1996 as Managing Director and named General/Artistic Director of Central City Opera in 1998. During his 17-year tenure, Mr. Pearce has set forth the company’s current artistic mission of balancing traditional and progressive works. Central City Opera’s national/international reputation has been elevated with American premieres such as Gloriana in 2001 and world premieres including the new Chinese opera, Poet Li Bai in 2007, garnering press coverage all over the world. Nationally, he has served as Chairman of the Grants Review Panel for the NEA; as a juror for the Rosa Ponselle International Voice Competition and Regional Met Auditions; and as a Board Member for OPERA America. In May, Mr. Pearce received the Bonfils-Stanton Foundation Award for the Arts and Humanities.

Over the next year, you will have the opportunity to experience the kind of art we have been producing only in Central City down along the Front Range. Our intention, along with the Show Boat production and ongoing Education and Community Engagement offerings, is to create a new immersive experience somewhere in the Denver area. Our hope is that in addition to our loyal audiences in Central City and our expanded musical theater audiences at the Buell Theatre, we can provide a new audience with a unique and exciting entrance point to the high level of art for which we are known all over the world. We have chosen an “immersive” experience as our place to start because it already has proven to be appealing to this new audience of 30-60 year olds. It obliterates the line between the audience and performers, providing a stronger, more visceral experience. We are very excited about this approach and have engaged some of the most influential and successful people in this field as our advisors. We have always guaranteed you an experience that you can get nowhere else. Those words will ring even more true over the next few years. The other thing that you can always count on is our ability to beautifully sing you an engaging story. Thank you for your support and enjoy the ride! Pelham G. Pearce

Education and Community Engagement What’s the buzz?

For more than 35 years Central City Opera has brought quality educational and entertainment offerings to the communities of Colorado and Wyoming through touring programs, concerts, and workshops that are open to educators and students throughout the region. All our programs for students are designed to impart and support core curriculum standards and are created by or for Central City Opera to those specifications. Here’s what teachers, students and community members have to say about the programs that come to them: En Mis Palabras/In My Own Words (bilingual one-act opera for grades 6-12 and family audiences) En Mis Palabras taught me I can change the world with my words alone and that you should be the change you want to see in the world. You inspired me. Thank you! –Student, Newton Middle School, Littleton

24

Inside the Orchestra (for grades K-6 and special performances for families with small children) My 2 ½ year-old granddaughter was enthralled by the performance of Figaro’s aria from The Barber of Seville. As we were leaving, she heard the second performance beginning, tugged at my hand and pleaded to go in and “hear Mr. Figaro sing again.” I was in awe that this gifted artist had made such a deep impression on my young grandchild’s spirit and mind. –Audience member, Tiny Tots Inside the Orchestra, Denver Mozart & Co. ( for grades K-6) I thought the performance was excellent! The students really enjoyed it and my daughter sang everything as an opera for at least a week after! –PTA Assemblies coordinator, Eagle Valley Elementary

The majority of my students are bilingual Spanish/English speakers and this performance illustrated the cultural effects as well as the pressures of using and not losing two languages. –5th Grade Teacher, Doull Elementary School, Denver

Before your wonderful performance I personally did not think I would enjoy the opera. As soon as I walked into the gym, I just knew you were going to be great. You were very funny and taught me a lot. You did things that blew my mind. I really want to thank you for all the happiness and joy you brought to our school. –Student, Morton Elementary, Pueblo

[En Mis Palabras] is the best program I have taken students to in my 35 years of teaching! –Teacher, Westlake Middle School, Broomfield

The Great Opera Mix-up ( for grades K-6) I loved how the students were introduced to new vocabulary and walked away with actual definitions. I’m a huge believer in

C C O

Eureka Street ( for grades K-6) My students LOVED it. Eureka Street is fun but also very informative – kids really latched onto voice parts and range of voice. The inclusion of students and teachers in the program was highly engaging, but the entire thing was so accessible! –Music teacher, F.M. Day Elementary, Westminster How the West Was Sung ( for grades 3- 8) The best thing about [How the West Was Sung] was the way they told us about history through song. It helped me learn about the history of the West and Colorado. –8th grader, Bell Middle School, Lakewood Our students definitely need more exposure to the arts, and it is wonderful that you bring it to us instead of us coming to you. I also appreciated the way the history ties into what they are already learning in school – very relevant. But the most appealing aspect is that we get an excellent performance from a quality Colorado musical organization. –Music teacher, Wray Elementary/Wray High School

Education and Community Engagement

building the background knowledge of my students. They came in not knowing much and left knowing a lot more. –Teacher, Metz Elementary School, Westminster

Music! Words! Opera! (5-day summer workshop for educators and teaching artists assisting students in creating original “operas.”) I’ve been teaching for years and this is one of the best professional development workshops ever. I think young teachers in particular can learn more practical applications in one week than in all their college methods classes. –Music teacher, Summit County Middle School The experience of building an opera and performing it was life changing for many of my fifth grade students. The engagement of every individual was amazing; each child was included and important in the production. –Music teacher, Southmoor Elementary, Denver Saints and Sinners (staged concert of opera and musical theatre favorites for family audiences) I always recommend this group to other presenters. It is really wonderful to have such talent within driving distance of our location. The morning presentation for the 6th graders was fantastic. We had several students show up for the evening performance that did not have regular season tickets. We made sure they got in. –President, Lander Valley (WY) Concert Association

Opera on the Go performance and Master Vocal Class ( for grades 6-12) My students are always so highly energized after your workshop! They work harder, they are more focused, and they sing better. I want this on my school calendar annually! –Choral director, Estes Park High School Performing Arts Intensive (2-week workshop for high school students) The Summer Intensive was a life-changing experience. I was able to stretch my abilities and see my own talent and potential. –Student participant, Colorado Springs

Smooth Operator (staged concert of opera and musical theatre favorites for family audiences) I was very impressed with the talent, but even more: the arrangement of the selections, the narrative, the direction, the interaction between singers and musicians…I could go on and on. I’ve raved about last night’s performance so much that I have a number of people asking where it will play again; they want to see it. –Audience member, Lone Tree Arts Center

Central City Opera Guild

Making a Difference for Central City Opera

Since 1974 the Central City Opera Guild has been a dynamic force in furthering the success of opera and the arts in Colorado. A Guild membership provides a myriad of benefits and volunteer opportunities with emphasis on the following: Youth Focused Education – Opera Rocks! Our Youth Education Series, Opera Rocks!, features three engaging opportunities for 5- to 12-year-olds to experience the wonderful world of opera. Young Hands on Opera and Art is an interactive collaboration with the Denver Art Museum in the spring. Opera Inside Out gives our young patrons a peek behind the scenes in Central City in June, with a backstage tour and a performance of the youth production, Eureka Street, by the Central City Opera Ensemble. The grand finale of Opera Rocks! is our signature event: Take a Child to the Opera on July 18, with a wonderful afternoon of activities culminating in the family matinee performance of The Barber of Seville.

Audience Development Guild events populate our yearly calendar. They range from fabulous opera performances tailored specifically for our groups to fun social events at members’ homes. Membership also includes newsletters featuring the latest Guild and CCO offerings.

Historic Preservation & Maintenance of 30+ Central City Opera Properties Volunteers of the Guild have provided countless hours preserving and protecting the treasured Historic Properties where the CCO artists and summer staff reside. Pre-season preparations in the residences make the

Fundraising Every year the CCO Guild stages a well-loved holiday home tour in the Denver area. In 2012, L’Esprit de Noël celebrated 36 years of fundraising support to Central City Opera. In April 2013, the second PARTY for PRESERVATION fundraising event was held to raise funds for the restoration of Nicholas House, one of Central City Opera’s historic properties in Central City. Guild volunteers coordinate both of the fundraising events, giving generously of their time, talents and treasure.

Bonfils-Stanton Apprentice Artists and Company Support Each year the Guild sponsors three Apprentice Artists. Two awards are presented at the beginning of the season for promising young artists who have joined the company. In the fall, an award is given to a BonfilsStanton Apprentice Artist after the final performance in honor of Mary McGlone. Through our Greet-a-Singer program, artists are met at the airport and are transported to Central City. The Guild also hosts a preseason BBQ for the Apprentices at a private home in Denver to welcome them to Central City Opera. Ms. Alicia N. Holt Ms. Beth L. Hooper Mr. and Mrs. Michael C. Benefitting Central City Opera’s Historic Properties

Party for Preservation

Party for Preservation

The second PARTY for PRESERVATION was a resounding success in April 2013. Significant funds were raised for the restoration of Nicholas House, circa 1875, which houses production staff each summer. The committee, ably led by Kim Morss Dehncke and Kitty Koch, created a wonderful atmosphere of brightly colored, construction-themed decorations. Guests enjoyed a “panning for gold” activity that reminded everyone of Central City’s origins. Nancy Parker and El Pomar Foundation were honored for their dedication to Central City Opera.

L’Esprit de Noël

L’Esprit de Noël

Holiday Home Tour, Patron Party and Boutique

7th Avenue Historic District sparkled for Central City Opera November 15-17, 2012. The 36th Annual L’Esprit de Noël Holiday Home Tour was held in the beautiful Seventh Avenue Historic District of Denver. Five elegant homes along Seventh Avenue Parkway were gracefully adorned for the holidays by top floral and table designers. Margaret Baker, along with the mother-daughter team of Nona Warburton and Kelly Westergren, chaired the tour and organized a wonderful committee of volunteers. The tour had the highest per-day attendance ever! L’Esprit de Noël raised $73,000 for CCO. Thank you to all who donated funds, volunteer hours and especially to the generous homeowners who shared their resplendent properties. The success of this event also relies upon the participation of area florists, table designers and boutique vendors.

Director Marc Astafan describes the process by which he brings the production to life: “Having just been to southern Spain, I immediately started thinking about the architecture of the city of Seville – its elegance, colors and the iron work. Mixing that with Rosina’s entrapment in Dr. Bartolo’s home, I knew that the main scenic element was going to be a cage of some kind - perhaps an iron cage painted gold to suggest Bartolo’s wealth; a beautiful young bird trapped in a gilded cage. Arnulfo Maldonado’s final design was beyond what I had originally imagined. Then came the costumes which, more than anything, determine the historical period; I settled on a more “traditional” period –the late 1700s or early 1800s. To me the opera makes very little sense at a later time given the opera’s plot. I love working with Sara Jean Tosetti – she “gets” my visual taste – historical period with a twist. She understands my determination to find just the right colors for each character. Last, we add the lighting by David Jacques which literally illuminates the opera – the time of day, the mood, focus and ambience. All of this in an exciting effort to tell the story in the most visually captivating way – always true to the piece and its characters.”

Synopsis Setting: Seville around 1800 Act I Outside Dr. Bartolo’s home, Count Almaviva serenades an unknown lady whom he adores. Figaro, self-assured barber and man-of-all-skills, identifies her as Rosina, ward of the doctor, who intends to marry her himself. The girl manages to pass Almaviva a note declaring her interest. Assisted by Figaro, Almaviva forms a plan. He is “Lindoro”, he declares to Rosina, a student poor in money but rich in love. Figaro decides that, in the guise of a drunken soldier, Almaviva will be brought into the house. They go to make arrangements, leaving behind the Count’s servant Fiorello, who laments his situation. Rosina muses on “Lindoro’s” charms and her determination to escape Bartolo. She decides to have Figaro take a letter to “Lindoro,” but the arrival of Bartolo thwarts this plan. The singing teacher, Don Basilio, warns Bartolo of Almaviva’s attentions to the girl, and suggests that slander will stop him. The two leave to plan an immediate marriage for Bartolo and Rosina. Figaro warns Rosina, who gives him the letter for “Lindoro.” Bartolo is confronting Rosina suspiciously when the Count, disguised as an intoxicated soldier, arrives, declaring that he has been billeted in this household. Bartolo protests. Almaviva passes Rosina a note, and when soldiers come to arrest him, they instead salute their supposed colleague, who has passed them a purse of gold. Intermission - 20 minutes 42

Act II In the music room, Bartolo puzzles over the now-vanished soldier whom he suspects of being in league with the Count. “Don Alonso” arrives, claiming to be Basilio’s pupil sent by his ailing master to give Rosina her lesson. It is Almaviva in another disguise. Although Bartolo does not recognize him, Rosina does. Throughout her lesson, she contrives to express to him her feelings. All the while, Bartolo is oblivious. Figaro, arriving to shave Bartolo, procures the key to the outside window. Basilio’s arrival nearly ruins the plan, but he is sent away with another purse of gold. Bartolo, overhearing the plan for elopement, chases Figaro and Almaviva away, summoning Basilio to fetch the notary so Bartolo can marry Rosina that evening. He shows Rosina her letter and tells her that her “Lindoro” is really wooing her on behalf of another man, the Count. Shocked and unhappy, Rosina agrees to marry Dr. Bartolo. Figaro and the Count prepare the elopement as a furious storm rages. When Rosina refuses to go with them, “Lindoro” reveals his true identity. Basilio is threatened and bribed into witnessing the marriage of Almaviva and Rosina. Dr. Bartolo concedes defeat and blesses the lovers.

“It is always intimidating to approach a piece of American theater as seminal as Thornton Wilder’s OUR TOWN, especially when you add an operatic treatment. Several of my favorite characters are gone. On the other hand, the excellent J.D. McClatchy has offered us some wonderful insights: a more romantic side of Mr. and Mrs. Gibbs, and Mr. and Mrs. Webb somehow seen less iconic and a bit more human. Still present, though, is the quintessential romance of George and Emily, the boy and girl next door. Always present is the amazing character development, the hyper-concentration on relationships and ‘ordinariness’ and ‘extra-ordinariness’ of humanity and the value of every moment of every day. It seems simple but it is deep and rich and full of life, love, and loss. These basic elements of the human experience and challenges made OUR TOWN one of the most popular international works of art in the history of 20th century theater.” – Director Ken Cazan

Synopsis Setting: Grover’s Corners, New Hampshire, in the early 20th Century Act I To the accompaniment of the old hymn “O God, Our Help in Ages Past,” a funeral procession passes by. The Stage Manager introduces the audience to the place and time, and particularly to two families: one is that of Dr. and Mrs. Gibbs, the other of Mr. and Mrs. Webb. They are next door neighbors and each has a teenager in the house. The Webb’s Emily is the high school’s best student; the Gibbs’ George leads the baseball team. The young people are aware of one another, and have been known to exchange gazes from their windows, but fear they are too dissimilar to come together. As Emily and George deal with the challenges of being eighteen, their parents deal with the realities of life in a small town. Intermission - 15 minutes Act II Three years later, Emily and George are to be married. The older Gibbses reflect on their own marriage, while Editor Webb advises George on the future. The Stage Manager, wanting to be sure that the audience understands how the situation developed so far, takes the action back two years to the early stages of Emily and George sharing hopes and fears over a soda. Then it’s ahead to wedding day. Both young people have apprehensions about the future, though the service proceeds before the gathered throng in the church. Intermission - 15 minutes

Act III Nine years later, the scene is that of the town cemetery. The spirits of the dead are gathered to one side, and amongst them is Mrs. Gibbs. As in the first act, a funeral procession approaches to the same hymn as at the opening. The late Mrs. Gibbs declares that it is Emily who has died in childbirth. As the coffin is set into place, Emily herself appears amongst the dead. Already longing to be with George once more, she asks to be allowed to return to life for just one day from the past, so as to experience it again. The other dead warn her that this is unwise, but the Stage Manager does not refuse her request. He takes Emily back to her thirteenth birthday. At first, she is struck by how young and happy everyone looks, but then frustration sets in as she realizes that she is the only one who knows how fleeting these joys are. Bidding farewell to her loved ones, she rejoins the dead where she is welcomed as one of their own. The living, they lament, just don’t understand.

Music by Jerome Kern | Book and Lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II Based on the novel “Show Boat” by Edna Ferber “SHOW BOAT opened on Broadway in 1927, and musicals would never be the same again! The stars aligned with the unlikely collaboration of the great impresario Florence Ziegfeld, composer Jerome Kern and librettist Oscar Hammerstein II. In daring to deal with the important and challenging themes of their day, SHOW BOAT continues to remain relevant for us today. At a time when Broadway delivered only musical comedies and frothy revues, SHOW BOAT is often called the first real ‘book musical.’ For the first time, book, music and lyrics all integrated to tell the story together. So with music driving the story in SHOW BOAT, and the help of a great design team, we’ve created a world where this spectacular score is truly at the center. The orchestra is on stage, with Jerome Kern’s score as our visible and emotional heartbeat, continually driving the story forward like the river that ‘keeps rolling along.’ Our singers as storytellers can then play over the orchestra pit and into the laps of the audience to deliver one of the great vocal scores of the American musical.” – Director Ray Roderick

Synopsis Act I Cap’n Andy Hawks fancies that he runs the finest showboat on the Mississippi, travelling the river with his crew and group of players to present light theater and melodrama in the various river towns. His daughter Magnolia admires a passing gambler, though dock worker Joe (to whom the timeless song “Ol’ Man River” is granted) warns her to be cautious. Trouble arises for two of the showboat’s leading players, Julie and Steve, who are man and wife, but not of the same race. As their marriage is illegal according to local laws, the sheriff is coming to arrest them. Julie and Steve manage to outsmart the sheriff, but fearful of further complications, they must flee. Left without his leading players, Captain Andy must quickly find replacements. His choice falls upon the gambler, Ravenal, and upon young Magnolia. Before long, the love scenes the two are playing on stage mature into love for each other, and they are married, over the protests of Magnolia’s mother. Intermission - 20 minutes

Act II Some years later, Ravenal and Magnolia are in Chicago living off his precarious income as a gambler. Having to support a wife and an infant daughter Kim (named for the coming together of three states at the Mississippi) proves too much for his financial and emotional resources and he departs, leaving Magnolia on her own. Finding old friends from the showboat, she seeks work as a club singer, auditioning with a song she had learned from Julie. Listening unseen, Julie decides that Magnolia needs the work more than she does, and quietly leaves the job open for Magnolia, who ultimately finds great success on Broadway. She has not seen Ravenal in years, but her friends and family arrange a riverbank reunion for the two. Despite the passage of time and much water under the bridge, all is forgiven.

Artists Training Program

Returning for his second year as Director and Administrator of the Bonfils-Stanton Artists Training Program, Marc Astafan, a respected director, educator, mentor and coach is joined again by Principal Coach Michael Baitzer, one of his generation’s top opera and recital pianists. Mr. Baitzer is responsible for teaching diction classes and co-teaching the audition class for the Program, as well as musical coaching for the singers. Founded in 1978, the rigorous 10-week Training Program is now a national model for the professional development of young singers. It integrates daily training in diction and movement, individual coaching, and sessions in career management with rehearsals and performance opportunities in the summer’s main stage and surrounding productions. Approximately 30 participants are selected from more than 900 applicants each year. The Apprentices receive career-entry training and roles in productions. The Studio Program is intended for young singers who demonstrate potential to benefit from advanced training.

Individual Donors

The Central City Opera (CCO) board and staff join the entire company in acknowledging with warmest thanks the generous donors who made a gift between May 1, 2012 and April 30, 2013 to support the Company’s commitment to excellence. In 2012, 83% of the contributed income goal came from you and the many others like you who are making an investment in a tradition of achievement. While space limitations allow the Company to list only those donors of $100 or more, every gift is important and truly appreciated. Special Thanks | Music & Martinis

2012 Music & Martinis

Photos by David Zalubowski.

On the rocks, extra dry, shaken not stirred! Plenty of irresistible auction shopping. Broadway favorites blended with popular opera melodies. All of this mixed up to deliver an absolutely delightful evening at Central City Opera’s (CCO) fourth annual Music & Martinis celebration. The DU Cable Center was packed with party-goers on Thursday, June 14, 2012. Vodka 14 hosted the martini bar complimented by a fine spirits tasting provided by Leopold Bros. Chaired by Nancy Parker, CCO Board Chairman, the event saw lively bidding on a tempting array of auction items as guests sipped their cocktails before adjourning to a delicious dinner and live auction with veteran charity auctioneer, Gary Corbett. Among the many successful selections, four couples acquired a unique photo safari in Africa. Others left the evening with a blissful week in Rye, Sussex, England; tickets to the popular Book of Mormon; walk-on roles in the 2013 production of Show Boat; a sojourn in a beautiful home nestled on the 5th hole of the Pole Creek Golf Course in Fraser; a coveted hand-painted antique CCO Opera House chair; a luxurious condominium and week of golf at the Faldo Championship Golf Course in Palm Desert; and an evening with the Colorado Rockies in the Molson Coors Suite at Coors Field. Music & Martinis is a popular pre-Festival Denver event offering a sneak peak of the upcoming Festival’s world-class artists and the gifted stars of tomorrow participating in the Bonfils-Stanton Foundation Artists Training Program. Pat Pearce, CCO’s General and Artist Director, hosted the 2012 evening with the help of co-hosts Curt Olds, a 2012 Principal Artist and former CCO Apprentice Artist, and John Moriarty, CCO’s Artistic Director Emeritus. Along with Mr. Olds and the six talented young artists

performing, Pat Pearce himself “sang for his supper” with the crowdpleasing “Summertime” from Gershwin’s classic Porgy and Bess. A rousing rendition of Oklahoma! sung by the Apprentice Artists brought the evening to a memorable close. Central City Opera expresses its warmest gratitude to the following 2012 Music & Martinis Sponsors and Patrons: Judy & Newell Grant Signature Sponsor Gregg Kvistad & Amy Oaks First Western Trust Lanny & Sharon Martin Nancy Parker Patron Sponsors Bryan Pulte Joanne Field Barbara E. Zarlengo Jeannie & John Fuller 2013 Music & Martinis The fifth annual Music & Martinis once again filled the atrium at DU’s Cable Center on Thursday, June 13, 2013. Hosted by CCO’s General and Artist Director, Pat Pearce, with co-host Danny Belcher, a 2013 Festival Principal Artist (Figaro) and former Apprentice Artist, the 2013 young artists delivered outstanding performances of favorites from opera and musical theatre. First Western Trust was the evening’s Gold Sponsor, joined by Peak ENT & Voice Center/ J. Michael King, MD as the Silver Sponsor. Altitude Spirits hosted the martini bar. Among the many memorable auction items were an encore African safari for two; a trip to the Land of Enchantment for the Santa Fe Opera; another very special opera outing to the Houston Grand Opera; tickets to the outrageously popular Book of Mormon; a Crow Canyon archeological expedition, and an evening for two at the Boulder Dinner Theatre’s 2013 fall production of The Full Monty.

Flower Girls

2013 Flower Girls

Photos by Anne McGonagle (left), © Bettinger Photo (right).

The Central City Opera Flower Girl Presentation is the oldest debutante ceremony in Colorado. This special Central City Opera tradition began in 1932 at the grand re-opening of the Opera House in the midst of the Great Depression. Two strong-willed women with powerful pioneer roots – Anne Evans and Ida Kruse McFarlane – engaged key members of the community and founded the Central City Opera House Association. With great vision, they created a summer music festival, bringing world-class theatrical and opera artists to the stage – a tradition that continues to this day. Two young ladies, who often watched the rehearsals of the inaugural production of the play Camille, were asked to pass out nosegays to members of the audience at intermission. The audience tossed the bouquets across the footlights at the end of the production, much as the miners had tossed gold coins onto the stage during curtain calls in the 1880s. Prior to each opera Festival season, young women from prominent Colorado families are invited to be Central City Flower Girls. A dynamite blast celebrating the rich mining history of Central City heralds their presentation on Opening Night, and the church bells ring while the Flower Girls and their fathers dance the traditional “Yellow Rose Waltz” on Eureka Street in front of the Opera House. During intermission, patrons still receive flower nosegays to toss on stage, celebrating the beginning of another opera festival.
