ANNUAL REPORT 2020
I THINK IT GOES WITHOUT SAYING THAT 2020 WAS A YEAR THAT NONE OF US WILL EVER FORGET. From closing our Opera House doors for only the third time in Central City Opera (CCO) history, to navigating a global pandemic while ensuring our Festival performers and staff were paid a portion of their contracts, to expanding how we connect with our audiences. We don’t look back on the past year with disappointment, but as a time of incredible accomplishment. Everyone involved with Central City Opera throughout 2020 deserves a standing ovation – especially YOU! Without your support, 2020 might have had a very different impact on this 89-year-old company. Despite having no regular summer season, CCO was dedicated to bringing our supporters joy and entertainment. We launched CCO Online, a content-filled digital portal with performances, educational resources, opera games and in-depth blogs about our past and present. Our new web series Opera Central features administrative staff in conversation with former and current performers, artists, technicians and community organizations, with the Central City Opera Podcast serving as an audioonly version to these informative discussions. We were able to provide safe, socially-distanced live music performances from the Opera House balcony and gardens through our summer CCO Al Fresco concert series and captured those on video for online distribution. And we cherished our comradery with donors through outdoor movie nights and historical property tours. In the fall, artists from around the country painted Central City and its historical beauty at our Plein Air Festival, which gave people a welcome respite to gather safely together outdoors for a record-breaking sales exhibition. Our dedicated Guild kept the Opera House gardens flourishing and continued the storied tradition of L’Esprit de Noël with the first-ever digital home tour of the Fisher Mansion in downtown Denver. We brought much-needed holiday cheer to the assistedliving residents of Kavod Senior Life with a COVID-compliant caroling performance. And finally, we named five prestigious community leaders to 2021 Officer positions to our Board of Directors: Gregg Kvistad, Anne McGonagle, Roopesh Aggarwal, Mike Huseby and Heather Miller. While this past year has been challenging to say the least, we are filled with gratitude for you and all of our supporters, partners and patrons who have lifted our spirits and reminded us of the importance of the work that we do. Music and the arts are needed now more than ever – to help us heal, to give us hope and to inspire us. You have inspired us to keep going, and we hope that you’re as eager as we are to journey into the future. The best is yet to come! With Heartfelt Thanks,
Pelham “Pat” Pearce, Jr. General/Artistic Director

The March Opera Teaser was the last “normal” event held by Central City Opera before COVID-19 restrictions went into place. The Guild continued the tradition of Planting Day by hosting a socially-distanced event that allowed the Opera House gardens to bloom beautifully throughout the summer and into the fall. CCO Al Fresco allowed Central City residents to experience opera outside of the regular summer festival season. Everyone at CCO from staff, to Guild members, to the board of directors learned very quickly how to utilize Zoom meetings for socialization and learning!

2020 PROGRAMS
& COVID-19 RESPONSE OVERVIEW The impact of COVID-19 forced Central City Opera to make several difficult decisions during 2020 which drastically impacted operations for the year. Key decisions included: • Postponed 2020 Festival to 2021 • Rescheduled, and then canceled the 2020 Gala • Canceled all in-school education performances, workshops and activities • Canceled the majority of in-person community performances and activities Instead of going dormant, the staff at CCO determined it was important to stay connected with our patrons, donors and the Central City community during this difficult time. We found several ways to continue our mission, engage with audiences, connect with new potential audiences and develop new methods of delivering programs. Some of the steps taken included:
• Created a fundraising campaign to support the 150+ contract artists impacted by the decision to postpone the Festival.
• Developed an internal programming task force to create programming activities within the restrictions formed by COVID-19 – including in-person and online activities
• Transitioned many Education programs from in-person to digital
• Transitioned the Plein Air Festival into an all-outdoor, socially-distant festival
• Performed a great deal of work on the historic properties that is normally not possible due to access and weather restrictions
• Secured a date for 2021 Gala and successfully transferred sponsorships and tickets from 2020 to 2021
• Developed new measurement tools in order to report online engagement and participation numbers
Out of commitment to the safety and wellbeing of our staff, artists and community, Central City Opera made the difficult decision to postpone the 2020 Festival until 2021 due to ongoing health concerns caused by COVID-19. We quickly established the CCO COVID-19 Relief Fund with the goal to raise $297,000 to support the organization’s commitment to pay all of our 2020 Festival company a portion of their contracts and assist CCO during this unprecedented time. Thanks to the over 600 people and organizations who donated, we raised more than $350,000! Words cannot express how grateful we are to each and every one of you. The full list of donors can be viewed online: centralcityopera.org/covid19donors.

CCO AL FRESCO 2020 HIGHLIGHT
DURING THE SUMMER OF 2020, we launched CCO Al Fresco — an intimate, outdoor concert experience featuring main stage opera singers. Each performance was recorded and distributed online, with current views exceeding 13,000! It was a unique challenge to utilize spaces not normally used for opera performances, including the Opera House balcony and gardens. Fantastic Central City weather allowed in-person viewers to spread out and enjoy the sun and song.

HISTORIC PROPERTIES UPDATE
VOLUNTEERS AND CONTRACTORS PERFORMED A GREAT DEAL OF WORK ON CCO’S HISTORIC PROPERTIES THIS SUMMER. Here is a list of just a few of those accomplishments: • Bron Wright, carpenter and principal trombone player for the Opera Orchestra, rebuilt the porch on the front of D’Albe House. • John Baril, Brian Cook and other volunteers spent the summer living in Central City, painting six different properties. • Professional painters were also hired for the exterior painting of Festival Hall, Bradford Press and Parking Lot houses.
• White Construction installed new composite shingles on Penrose Houses I and II with the help of a State grant provided by the Colorado State Historical Fund. • A new boiler was installed in the Teller House.
• Studies have been conducted to provide an extensive report on short and long term improvements to the Opera House and Teller House by Marx Okubo Consulting.
• Colorado School of Mines began a new relationship with Central City Opera to develop a plan to install heat in the Opera House for year-round use; the goal is to have plans ready to take to construction companies for bids.
• Mountain View Bank volunteers worked with Eric Chinn to paint the fence in front of Parish House. • Arrangements were made for two local theater companies, Peak to Peak Players and The Belvidere Players, to perform in the Opera Garden – especially appreciated by the citizens of Central City. 2 0 2 0
