FROM THE CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD

JUDITH W. GRANT

Strength and Stability Welcome to the 87th Central City Opera Summer Festival! On behalf of the entire Board of Directors, I thank you for being with us and for your continuing support. Looking back at 2018 and then forward into our 2019 Festival and all that it holds, I am again struck by these same guideposts which inform all that we do at Central City Opera.

Staff.

First and foremost, our staff, led by General/Artistic Director Pelham Pearce. This stellar group will jump in, fill a need, and put the opera first. Always with a smile. I have watched this firsthand.

Quality.

Our product is second to none. The Festival performances speak for themselves — first rate, often cutting edge, always superior in every way. Strength and stability you can count on day in, day out.

Leadership.

A dedicated group of men and women who are constantly looking for ways to ensure that Central City Opera is here for the long term — at least another 87 years.

Future Goals. Our upcoming endowment campaign, Voice Your Dreams, is designed to make sure that this opera company will continue to “sing extraordinary stories to spark imagination, inspire creativity, and open minds to the breadth of human experience.” Finances.

Always a current topic with any non-profit, especially in the arts. Our recent decision to hire a CFO in February of 2019 confirms our pledge to be financially secure. We are committed to being an arts organization that can hold its head high from both an artistic and a business point of view. Central City Opera was built to last. We honor the continuing legacy from the Cornish and Welsh miners whose example guides us today. The stones in the opera house, the yellow roses blooming along Eureka Street, and our historic collection of Victorian houses remind us of the steadfastness that precedes us and that steers us in the years to come. We cannot let those people down. It’s what we do. Every day. It’s what we do — for you. Warmly,

Judith W. Grant Chairman of the Board

FROM THE GENERAL/ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

PELHAM G. PEARCE, JR.

Welcome to Central City Opera’s 2019 Festival, We welcome all to this special, uniquely Colorado place — from the operaphile to the neophyte! Central City Opera is pleased to offer you a very diverse and interesting mix of experiences this summer. Beginning with the beautiful Madama Butterfly of Puccini, continuing through Britten’s amazing Billy Budd, as well as the angelic sounds of Poulenc and Debussy and ending with a taste of Broadway in Encore: A Musical Revue, this season is a satisfying journey. I have made it my mission to curate a season for you every summer that is an exciting mix of repertory designed to show the breadth of work possible in this art form. And, that work is only enhanced when we create it for this unique, historic theater which we are lucky to call home. If this is your first time in Central City, I encourage you to come back and enjoy more of what this season has to offer — including the second annual Central City Plein Air Festival at the end of September. It will feature visual artists from all over the country who come to paint this beautiful place. More information about this and other offerings can be found as you explore this program book. We are currently finalizing plans for our 2020 Festival which will feature new productions of Verdi’s Rigoletto, Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Carousel and Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas. We will welcome back old friends and introduce new artists to this special place. It promises to be another season not to be missed! We do our best to help you enjoy your time here. If you have suggestions, we would love to hear them. Please send them to admin@centralcityopera.org, and we will put them “in the hopper” as we continue to work on making the art we produce and the experience of coming here more accessible and inviting. Thank you for joining us, and I hope that your Central City Opera adventure is unforgettable. Sincerely,

Pelham G. Pearce, Jr. General/Artist Director

THE HILLS ARE ALIVE with the Sound of the Bonfils-Stanton Foundation Artists Training Program

BY ERIN OSOVETS

Trainees earn...above all else, the experience of a lifetime. CENTRAL CITY OPERA STANDS OUT for reasons beyond its altitude, history and beauty — it’s also ground zero for one of the summer’s premier professional development programs in opera, the Bonfils-Stanton Foundation Artists Training Program. For ten weeks every summer, gifted young singers are selected through a rigorous audition process and ascend to the town for top of the line coaching and training in diction, movement, acting, stage technique and career preparation. The streets of Central City come alive with the rousing sounds of the 30 trainees, who live side by side with locals and professional performers as they rehearse and soak in the lessons offered in this rare setting.

16

C e n t r a l

C i t y

O p e r a

Provided the chance for exposure in secondary roles, understudy positions and chorus, the Program categorizes trainees into two tiers: Apprentice Artist and Studio Artist. Apprentice Artists have solid educational and professional performance backgrounds and are continuing to develop the vocal and acting skills necessary for a lasting career in opera. Studio Artists are younger singers, often in the process of completing degrees in performance, who have demonstrated potential and are seeking professional experience beyond their college or university. Trainees earn a salary with benefits, the possibility of additional performance compensation and above all else, the experience of a lifetime. Over 800

applications are received each year for the prestigious program, which has trained many of America’s most notable young opera professionals, including: Denyce Graves, Alan Held, Cynthia Lawrence, Margaret Lattimore, Mary Mills, Emily Pulley, Greg Turay, Latonia Moore, Matthew Polenzani, Jesus Garcia, Chad Shelton, Daniel Belcher and Celena Shafer. The 2019 season marks the inauguration of Michael Baitzer as the Director of the Bonfils-Stanton Foundation Artists Training Program. A fixture of the Central City Opera music staff since 1999, Michael has been the Festival’s Principal Coach since 2012 and is the Head of Music Staff at Washington National Opera. An active coach and collaborative pianist, Michael has served on the

faculties of many other premier programs, most recently Wolf Trap Opera Company, The Juilliard School, Spoleto Festival USA and Aspen Music Festival and School. Combined with the expertise of Stage Director/Acting Instructor Ken Cazan, Movement Coach/Choreographer Melinda Sullivan and Stage Combat Instructor Erick Wolfe, the Training Program remains committed to the vision enacted by Artistic Director Emeritus John Moriarty in 1978. When audiences attend performances at Central City Opera, they get an exclusive glimpse into the future of opera and a sneak peek at its rising stars.

EDUCATION PROGRAMS

THE MUSIC DOESN'T STOP AFTER THE FESTIVAL

Cultivating Young Opera Fans in Colorado throughout the Year BY ERIN OSOVETS “Can you break a glass with your voice?” a fourth grader asks one of Central City Opera’s touring sopranos. THIS IS THE KIND OF HUMOROUS — and valid — information that kids want to know about the thrilling art form of opera when they hear it in person for the first time. A key focus of Central City Opera’s mission is to introduce children, families and educators to opera and classical music. An additional 40,000 people experienced a slice of the summer Festival in 2018 through educational performances and workshops across the region. This year, Central City Opera expanded its reach with Family Series performances of Mozart & Co., an interactive show for children and their parents that brings to life scenes from hilarious stories originally envisioned by Shakespeare and the Brothers Grimm. “Kids love opera,” says Emily Murdock, associate director of Central City Opera’s Education program. “They love being close to loud voices, they love the storytelling and they love the spectacle.”

Kids indeed gravitate towards the goofy, fun, dynamic elements of the programs that Central City Opera performs in schools. How The West Was Sung is an assembly show that showcases frontier history through the stories of Leadville Silver King Horace Tabor and his beautiful wife Baby Doe; the Unsinkable Molly Brown; Clara Brown, a freed slave and Colorado pioneer; and other assorted western characters. With En Mis Palabras/ In My Own Words, middle school students identify with the struggle between a teen and her parent through a modern-day, bilingual opera that features four singers accompanied by piano and classical guitar. “The beauty of our programming is that we are presenting legitimate opera and music theater, sung by seasoned opera singers, but in a way that meets kids on their level. They’re being exposed to opera as a creative medium and sometimes they don’t even know that they are being ‘taught,’” says Emily. Cultivating awareness about opera in broad audiences, particularly in children, is at the heart of Central City

“Can you break a glass with your voice?" Opera’s mission and is essential to cementing the future of this beloved musical genre. With kids, everything is a teachable moment. Through scholarships funded by generous individuals and foundations, Central City Opera is able to bring its touring shows and classroom curriculum to students of all income levels, dismantling the perception that opera is only for adults.

“The students were so surprised and awestruck,” says a teacher from Skyline Vista Elementary in Westminster. “We had mini operas in all classes — with multiple conflicts and usually happy resolutions!” To learn more about Central City Opera’s educational programming, visit centralcityopera.org/education.

PRESERVING THE PAST

THE JOHNSON HOUSE:

A LOVE STORY THROUGH THE AGES BY ERIN OSOVETS Maude A. Lowe. Henry was a dapper pillar of the community who sold English mining stock and managed several local mines, boosting the economy and turning abandoned properties back into successful operations. His gracious and charming wife Maude was known for her stylish parties and exotic rose garden.

WITH OVER 150 YEARS OF HISTORY, the Johnson House at 201 Eureka has stood as a testament to love, loss and the resilience of the town it inhabits. One of 29 historic properties that Central City Opera owns and maintains today, the Johnson House’s connection to Central City Opera is more binding than just sharing the same street. The people who lived in and restored the home over time have ingrained within its walls the same love they held for the Opera. It’s through their generosity and dedication that the house built in 1867 still stands today. Said to be the first home in Central City to have indoor plumbing, the white Gable Front/Folk Victorian with classic columns is the namesake of its fourth owners. However, before the Johnsons donated it to the Opera in 1961, the house enjoyed a colorful plethora of residents. Its first owner, Judge Henry A. Hicks, was elected the Gilpin County Attorney in 1900 and called Central City his home until moving in 1908 to practice law in Denver. He remained invested in Central City as a stockholder with the Rocky Mountain National Bank, which was located in the Teller House, another historic property owned and preserved by Central City Opera. The true love story of the Johnson House is told through the lives of its second owners, Henry Pope Lowe and

The couple lived in the Johnson House and used the building across the street, now known as Festival Hall, as an office. When Henry died tragically of pneumonia in 1920, Maude buried his ashes behind the house and moved into Festival Hall, where she was reclusive. She continued to set the dinner table for two and kept Henry’s hat and coat hanging in the front hall, as if she was waiting for him to return at any minute. In 1956, she donated Festival Hall to the Central City Opera Association and died a year later. Henry’s ashes were exhumed from behind the Johnson House and both Maude’s and his ashes were scattered in her garden behind Festival Hall. In 1961, Helen K. and Arthur E. Johnson purchased the home and gifted it to Central City Opera. Twenty years later, James Hartley of Hartley House Interiors and his wife Barbara Johnson, daughter of Helen and Arthur, lovingly repaired and redecorated the house with wallpaper and coverings in patterns of the 1800s. Today, the Johnson House enters a new era of restoration, thanks to the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) who have generously taken on the task of the latest remodel. The story of the home continues to unfold — one of care, integrity and love for the Opera, all thanks to the Western pioneers who saw a future for Central City. Learn more about the Johnson House Preservation Project at centralcityopera.org/johnson-house.

MADAMA BUTTERFLY

HISTORICAL CONTEXT WITH DIRECTOR ALISON MORITZ WHEN COMMODORE MATTHEW PERRY AND THE UNITED STATES NAVY SAILED TO JAPAN IN 1853, the small island country had been culturally and commercially isolated for over two centuries. Only a few Dutch and Chinese merchants accessed Japanese trade via the port town of Nagasaki (where our story today takes place). In 1859, when agreements between the U.S. and Japan were finally reached, Nagasaki was one of only four cities opened for foreign residence. This setting, then, has always been uniquely exposed to the presence of outsiders. As foreigners began to arrive, however, they were generally unwelcome in Japan, and Americans were considered to be brutish and even monstrous. But Japan had recently seen British forces almost completely destroy neighboring China’s navy during the Opium Wars. As a result, the Japanese response to British and American presence on their shores was rapid modernization and militarization. By 1867, reform was sweeping the country. Emperor Meiji moved into the shogunate palace and gave the city of Edo its modern name — Tokyo.

“Madama Butterfly provides us with a gripping look at the costs of social change.”

Far from being a quaint or irrelevant story, Puccini’s Madama Butterfly provides us with a gripping look at the costs of social change. In this case, neither tradition nor progress is sacrosanct — each way of life comes at a very high price. And although Butterfly, Suzuki, Pinkerton, Sharpless and Kate may be our ancestors — they still have much to tell us about the present day.

fiction rose as a popular literary genre, and out of that trend, the source material of Puccini’s opera emerged. He first experienced the story of the Madama Butterfly character in a one-act play by American playwright David Belasco, based on a short story by John Luther Long (1898) that compiled first-hand accounts of life in Japan and elements of fiction.

MADAMA BUTTERFLY

“Madama Butterfly has stood the test of time by provoking the kind of

powerful discourse

that fuels introspection and growth.” Known as a contributor to verismo [vair-EEZ-mo] style — meaning his operas aimed to portray the world as it really was and/or illustrate relatable experiences — Puccini immediately drew inspiration from Butterfly’s personal psychological drama. Just a few short years later, Madama Butterfly premiered at La Scala. It might come as a surprise to the modern audience that the opera was highly criticized throughout its early years. Puccini’s publisher, Casa Ricordi, expressed serious uncertainties from the start, considering the story “an insipid tearjerker unworthy of the composer.” Puccini, however, relished the opportunity to hone his theatrical abilities and augment his orchestral palette. Biographer Julian Budden suggests that in Madama Butterfly, Puccini was “sustaining greater and more-prismatic focus on his tragic heroine than he had ever attempted before.”

the opera fall short in terms of dramatic pacing, but unlucky errors with props resulted in unwelcome and unintentional humor on stage. Determined, Puccini wrote to a friend “Don’t worry, Madama Butterfly is alive and will soon resurface.” A second edition soon followed. Here, Puccini had come into his own, producing some of the most loved and recognized moments of the piece, like the “Humming Chorus” that bridges Acts 2 and 3 and the heart-wrenching trio between Suzuki, Pinkerton and Sharpless in Act 3. This is the lyrical and dramatic masterwork that appears on the Central City Opera House stage today. Running far deeper than just the lovely melodies for which it’s recognized, Madama Butterfly has stood the test of time by provoking the kind of powerful discourse that fuels introspection and growth.

Despite Puccini’s best efforts to make Madama Butterfly successful, the premiere was a disaster. Not only did

DIRECTOR: ALISON MORITZ BY ERIN OSOVETS ALISON MORITZ UNDERSTANDS THE IMPORTANCE OF CULTIVATING YOUNG TALENT. After being mesmerized by the opera at age nine in her hometown of St. Louis, Alison knew that the performing arts were where she belonged, but it wasn’t until her 20s that she felt the pull to direct. Since that discovery, she has fully immersed herself in the world of opera: studying the art of direction, teaching the craft, learning from experienced directors and traveling over 40 weeks a year to cities around the country to put her imaginative touch on contemporary and classic pieces, including this year’s main stage production of Madama Butterfly. “As a young director, you want people to be invested in your development as an artist,” says Alison. “Central City Opera recognizes that I want to contribute, and they’ve continued to offer opportunities for which I’m so grateful.” In 2017, Alison assisted in the direction of Central City Opera’s main stage production Così fan tutte and directed the one-act performances of Gallantry and Cabildo with trainees from the Bonfils-Stanton Foundation Artists Training Program, which has developed some of opera’s most exciting new talent. Alison appreciates the correlation between her own career trajectory and that of the trainees.

“To see female directors, composers and conductors getting more opportunities, that excites me. I think that our art is better for having more inclusive voices.”

34

C e n t r a l

C i t y

“It’s very gratifying to watch young artists progress from a studio level and return to sing in main stage roles,” she says. “There’s training and growth happening in every corner here, whether it’s through internships, the training programs or in my own particular case.” As Alison continues to expand her innovative repertoire, the 2018-2019 season sees her company debuts at Opera Colorado (La traviata), Lyric Opera of Kansas City (Sarah Kirkland Snider’s Penelope), Ravinia and Experiments in Opera. She returned to Washington National Opera for the world premiere of Taking Up Serpents (composed by Kamala Sankaram, libretto by Jerre Dye) and to New Orleans Opera for a new production of Abduction from the Seraglio. Becoming a featured guest director at so many renowned companies is no small feat in a world where the number of female directors is sparse. “To see female directors, composers and conductors getting more opportunities, that excites me. I think that our art is better for having more inclusive voices.” Alison Moritz is a shining example of how the best and brightest in the business have proven themselves through the artistic license provided at Central City Opera and how they’re paving the way for the next generation.

MADAMA BUTTERFLY

Director's Note ALISON MORITZ

“Just like us, they struggled, caught against the cusp of modernity and uncertain in the face of social and cultural change.”

IN 1853, JAPAN’S DOORS WERE OPENED TO THE WEST for the first time in over two centuries, and Western audiences were captivated by their first glimpses of Japanese culture. This booming trend of “orientalism” coincided with another major cultural phenomenon — the invention of the photograph. Within a decade, Western photographers had arrived to document and stage visions of Japan for their growing audiences back home. Italian photographer Felice Beato was one of the most famous of these enterprising artists. He and his workshop produced hundreds of hand-tinted landscapes and genre scenes, beginning with Nagasaki. In fact, the photographs themselves represent a blending of Eastern and Western culture and technology. The delicate process that Beato and his assistants used for coloring their photos was directly inspired by the handpainting of Japanese watercolor and woodblock artists. In many ways, I see Puccini’s beautiful opera Madama Butterfly as the theatrical equivalent of Beato’s staged Japanese photos. Here we have two Italian gentlemen interpreting Eastern culture through the lens of Western art. In many ways, verismo opera and the nascent artform of photography share similar qualities — both forms were promoted as more immediate, more “true to life” than their antecedents.

While we cannot ignore the romanticizing intervention of the Western gaze, there remains something true and essential about today’s subject and her story. People like Butterfly and Pinkerton really existed. Just like us, they struggled, caught against the cusp of modernity and uncertain in the face of social and cultural change.

“It’s great theater, the kind that reaches out and grabs you.”

Gloriana, First North American Production 2001

THE 2019 FESTIVAL IS AN IMPORTANT LANDMARK along Central City Opera’s journey to produce the entire canon of Benjamin Britten’s operas. “It’s great theater, the kind that reaches out and grabs you,” says General/ Artistic Director Pelham G. Pearce, Jr. Since Pearce joined Central City Opera 23 years ago, the works of Britten have been an artistic compass in the company’s repertoire. In an intimate theatre like the historic 550-seat Opera House, every detail is visible to the last row. “That’s the magic, and also the challenge, of a small house. It HAS to be real,” says Pearce. Central City Opera showcases extraordinary stories such as the works of Benjamin Britten like no other venue.

SETTING THE STAGE FOR BILLY BUDD BY MARGARET SIEGRIST

riveting and visceral BASED ON HERMAN MELVILLE’S NOVELLA, Billy Budd is a play in contrasts. Britten’s opera explores the duality of morals and law while pitting the expanse of the sea against the claustrophobia of the small society onboard a 1797 British warship. With the Napoleonic Wars raging at port and starboard, the H.M.S. Indomitable and its dutiful leader, “a sailor of distinction,” Captain Vere, serve as a symbolic beacon of stability and strength. However, when the young and idealistic Billy Budd is forcibly enlisted, balance within the small maritime society pitches sharply. Billy’s magnetic personality and “beauty” draws nearly the entire crew to

love him, with one imposing exception — Master at Arms John Claggart. It is up to interpretation whether Claggart’s hatred for Billy is a personified struggle between evil and good, the tumult of a romantic attraction to Billy that Claggart cannot abide or simply a regimented set-up to Captain Vere’s moral dilemma. Whatever the cause, the Master at Arms makes a point of cruelly targeting Billy Budd. Meanwhile, on the heels of mutinous outbreaks elsewhere in the British Royal Navy, whispers of rebellion trickle amid dark corners of the ship, and Billy’s charisma and agreeable disposition mark him an intriguing asset to the cause.

BILLY BUDD

...at its core, Billy Budd is a taut chronicle of moral struggle. The dramatic potency of Britten’s opera weaves riveting theatre with visceral music, forcing audiences to calibrate our own moral compasses. When tensions crest and Billy is brought to trial over crimes committed in self-defense, the fair and intellectual Captain Vere faces a decision that haunts him to his epilogue. Despite the vast scale of this opera at sea, at its core, Billy Budd is a taut chronicle of moral struggle. The dramatic potency of Britten’s opera weaves riveting theatre with visceral music, forcing audiences to calibrate our own moral compasses.

DIRECTOR: KEN CAZAN BY ERIN OSOVETS

“My goal is to bring humanity to everything I do theatrically..." KEN CAZAN HAS BEEN AN INTEGRAL FORCE in Central City Opera’s project to mount every work by 20th century composer Benjamin Britten. After this summer’s production of Billy Budd, there will be only two works by the prolific British composer that Ken has not yet directed throughout his career. It’s an impressive accomplishment for the Los Angeles-based director who is in his 18th season with Central City Opera and one that he connects to on a visceral level. “I have an emotional relationship to Britten and have since I started to direct,” says Ken. “There’s something about his music that I find so theatrical and challenging in its complexity, simplicity and honesty. I can’t think of any other composer who destroys me emotionally like Britten.” Growing up in Ohio, Ken got his start in musical theater as a child and was the first in his family to attend college. At Syracuse University, he absorbed acting and directing methods and took his craft to New York City, where he coached actors and singers. The thrill of hearing opera for the first time remains as fresh to him today as it did then, even after an award-winning career spanning

several continents, over 160 productions, a professorship at University of Southern California Thornton School of Music and countless world premieres. In 2017, Ken was inducted into the Grove Dictionary of Music — the first time in 25 years that the esteemed musical dictionary had been edited. The dictionary cited Ken Cazan as an expert in the works of Benjamin Britten and praised his skill in working with singer-actors on characters and relationships. “My goal is to bring humanity to everything I do theatrically and to make it identifiable and accessible. All good theater is cathartic — we reach people and open up something inside of them, to make them think and feel and talk and maybe heal.” Even with his abundance of accolades and experiences, Ken still considers Central City Opera essential in cultivating his future endeavours. “This is a place to ply your craft. At 8,500 feet, it’s idyllic: physically, spiritually and artistically. That’s why I keep coming back summer after summer.”

BILLY BUDD

Director's Note

“The ropes play a prominent role in both the physical production and the drama through the surrealistic quality of the projections.”

I HAVE CONCEIVED BILLY BUDD AS A FLASHBACK DREAMSCAPE, told entirely from the perspective of a very old and very frail Captain Vere. Being a memory piece, it is never quite realistic. Billy’s death has clearly eaten away at Captain Vere for years. Even though the captain states in the final moments of the opera that he is “content,” quoting Billy’s words from before he was hanged, we feel Vere’s tremendous guilt swell the closer he moves toward death — a stark comparison with Billy’s true acceptance and calm at the moment of his execution.

upstage. Through research, the design team discovered that ropes and rigging on board a man o’ war were as important as the wood used to build the ships. The ropes play a prominent role in both the physical production and the drama through the surrealistic quality of the projections.

KEN CAZAN

Being a dreamscape, the set is not an actual man o’ war main deck and quarterdeck. It consists of several large, wood-planked platforms, the boards of which have been bleached by both the sun and by the sandstone that would have been used to clean the teak decking. The upstage, smaller platform is higher and represents officers’ quarterdeck. Several layers of sails, doubling as projection surfaces, make the upstage platform disappear for select scenes, and a large sail-like surface across the entire upstage area provides another projection surface. Attached to the platforms are a series of ropes and rigging, some of which can be climbed to the grid area

The costumes are period. Costume Designer Jonathan Knipscher has the advantage of having designed Billy Budd before and comes with a well-researched portfolio. We have been fairly meticulous with detail on the costumes, but we have designed and tweaked them to fit the characters. For instance, John Claggart appears in a longer highwaymantype coat. At the end of the show, all of the men on stage are looking at Captain Vere as they were when the opera began. The dreamscape and memory give way to Vere’s reality, a man left alone in the morass of his memories.

SETTING THE STAGE FOR THE DOUBLE BILL BY MARGARET SIEGRIST

The unique pairing examines personal spirituality and endeavours into the depths of grief and loss. NEITHER THE BLESSED DAMOZEL NOR LITANIES TO THE BLACK VIRGIN are commonly experienced in performance, much less heard together. The unique pairing examines personal spirituality and endeavours into the depths of grief and loss. Together, they present interesting, contrasting interpretations of heaven that audiences must ponder. Is heaven a paradise, festooned with lilies, roses and stars as in the world of Debussy’s The Blessed Damozel or a limbo of confusion and dissonance in line with Poulenc’s Litanies to the Black Virgin?

Both works demonstrate pivotal moments in Debussy and Poulenc’s lives and composition. In this striking double bill, audiences experience the fresh curiosity of Debussy’s early career posed against grief-provoked evolution of Poulenc’s late style. The Blessed Damozel and Litanies to the Black Virgin relish in staggering emotion, rendering moments that seem unbearable a thing of beauty in the scope of human experience for artist and audience, alike.

The Blessed Damozel leaned out From the gold bar of Heaven... DEBUSSY’S INSPIRATION

POULENC’S CONVERSION

The Blessed Damozel provides a snapshot of Debussy as a young composer, exploring wide-ranging inspiration and defining what would become an influential compositional style to the music world.

Emblematic of change, Litanies to the Black Virgin signifies the turning point between the irreverence of Francis Poulenc’s early compositions and the gravitas of his later sacred works.

Though he lacked formal education outside the area of music, Debussy read voraciously throughout his life. His early compositions are marked by the impact of the Symbolist movement, which aimed to communicate through feeling and suggestion rather than the realism that dominated the previous decade. Debussy befriended and set the work of many Parisian Symbolists; through his effectual relationship with these local literaries, Debussy encountered the source material of The Blessed Damozel.

Searching for solace after the death of his friend and fellow composer, Pierre-Octave Ferroud, Poulenc travelled to the Rocamadour Shrine in the south of France on pilgrimage. Though he grew up in a devout Catholic family, Poulenc had distanced himself from the church. “As I meditated on the fragility of our human frame, I was drawn once more to the life of the spirit,” Poulenc reflected. Inspired by the famous icon of Notre Dame de Rocamadour and the prayers sung in the sanctuary, Poulenc began Litanies to the Black Virgin and returned to the religion of his youth.

One of Pre-Raphaelite founder Dante Gabriel Rossetti’s most famous poems, The Blessed Damozel depicts a woman in heaven yearning for her lover below. The work shows clear connection to The Raven by Edgar Allan Poe, who also came to influence the young Claude Debussy. He later planned operas based on Poe, including The Fall of the House of Usher. Inspired by the themes of love, loss and mysticism, he began writing a cantata based on Rossetti’s poem. Paving the way for his later orchestral works and opera, The Blessed Damozel is an early example of Debussy’s unique style which sought to evoke a mood and emotional landscape through creative harmony and color.

Seigneur, ayez pitié de nous "Lord, have mercy on us" This first venture into sacred composition initiated a new era for Poulenc as an artist. In contrast with the sharp wit and everyday themes of his earlier music, Poulenc confronted Litanies with a somber hand. Often a tool of his cheeky wit, dissonance was already a common element of Poulenc’s style, but here he employs it with a more serious touch to communicate raw, inconsolable emotion. The work calls for three-part chorus of either women or children’s voices and organ, an entirely new palate of sound for the composer, and explores Gregorian chant, diverging from the composer’s characteristic melodic flair. Though exploring new techniques and themes for composition, Poulenc maintained an approach all his own.

DIRECTOR: ALESSANDRO TALEVI BY ERIN OSOVETS

Alessandro’s future in the arts was evident at a young age as he built toy theaters and excelled at the piano. BACK FOR HIS FIFTH PRODUCTION AT CENTRAL CITY OPERA, Alessandro Talevi brings his distinct visual style to the double bill of The Blessed Damozel and Litanies to the Black Virgin. The Johannesburg native has had an eventful year since directing The Magic Flute for Central City Opera

last summer, keeping audiences from Rome to Tel Aviv and Philadelphia rapt with his creative expressions on the stage. “With Central City, I love the surreal quality to the town. You can focus a lot of detail on the acting, which doesn’t necessarily come across in a big theater, and [General/Artistic Director] Pat Pearce has a good sense of knowing where my imagination gets the best results,” says Alessandro. Alessandro’s future in the arts was evident at a young age as he built toy theaters and excelled at the piano. His hobbies manifested into a love of stage design as he studied music and art history at the University of the Witwatersrand, but it was at the Royal Academy of Music in London where he discovered his love for opera. As he accompanied singers on the piano, Alessandro realized that he belonged behind the scenes at the theater, thriving from the inspiration and impact that comes with being a director. That kicked off a fruitful career that has seen the execution of successful opera productions around the globe, including Amadigi di Gaula (2011), The Turn of the Screw (2012), The Marriage of Figaro (2014) and The Magic Flute (2018) at Central City Opera. The Blessed Damozel and Litanies to the Black Virgin provide the director with the freedom to experiment with his artistry in Central City — a place where Alessandro feels empowered to place emphasis on detail, nuance and explore dramatic subtleties.

“This is a festival atmosphere,” says Alessandro. “In a sense, every show that’s done here is a little bit of a miracle.”

DOUBLE BILL

Director's Note ALESSANDRO TALEVI

“The essential challenge for a stage director of this pairing of works for female voices is the fact that neither work was originally intended to be staged.” WHILE BOTH WORKS (particularly the Debussy) conjure up some strong visual imagery in the mind’s eye, they can be done as concert pieces without the need for staging. Neither work has an essential narrative quality that requires visual storytelling. So why turn them into staged performances, with costume, lighting and props? The two pieces are highly suggestive and evocative in their sentiments and emotions, and when juxtaposed, they spawn some interesting and unsettling ideas. The Blessed Damozel is essentially a reflection on the nature of bereavement and loss when it happens to a loving couple. What makes it unusual is that it's told from the point of view of the person who has died (the

‘damozel’), who is in heaven and pining for her lover. The work has an uplifting and airy tone because, for the most part, it tells of the fond reminiscence of their love and her joy at one day being able to see him again when he joins her in heaven. It is only in the final tragic bars when the reality of her current separation hits home, and she breaks down in tears. This is often the painful daily reality of anyone who has experienced the loss of their life-partner, especially when the memories of the shared time together are so sweet. Memories sustain us in times of grief; they are also a painful reminder that those happy moments are gone, at least for the present. Poulenc’s Litanies to the Black Virgin is a haunting work which was written while the young composer was experiencing a profound emotional trauma following the sudden death of his best friend in a car crash. It marks the first major break with the cheerful, witty and sometimes flippant music of his early period and is an interesting precedent to later serious works such as the Dialogues of the Carmelites, which dwell on notions of mortality and the anguish of dying. It is an evocative reflection on the fragility and brevity of life and youth. As both these works suggest various important spiritual moments in the life of any human being, it is fitting that they are presented in a church setting. I have therefore drawn on the ‘theater’ of religious ceremony as the aesthetic basis for this production. The iconology of our religious ceremonies is something which transcends cultures and creeds, and which has a communicative immediacy which will be heightened by the presentation in a context where those ceremonies are traditionally performed.

ENCORE: A MUSICAL REVUE

Director's Note CURT OLDS

I AM DELIGHTED TO JOIN CENTRAL CITY OPERA ONCE AGAIN for Encore: A Musical Revue — a new tradition which brings the magic of “Broadway in concert” to the Central City Opera stage, in celebration of another remarkable season of cutting-edge opera. This year is a very special one for me at Central City Opera as it marks the 25th Anniversary of my first season with the company. CCO has been part of my life from the very beginning of my career, giving me the benefits of a world-class apprentice program and engaging me in subsequent seasons as a principal artist. Some of my most treasured productions have been with Central City Opera, especially musicals like Show Boat and Oklahoma. Our friendship now includes this new series of concerts, which I am thrilled to curate and direct. I hope to give you – the opera patron and music lover – a concert highlighting operatic voices singing some of the best music from Broadway in a mix that includes operetta, classic Broadway showtunes and new contemporary standards of musical theatre.

“...to sing and present the glorious music of Broadway in one of the most charming opera houses ever built!” Last year’s inaugural concert was a huge success, and this year we continue with another big dose of guilty pleasure music from treasured works of musical theater! We will again be joined by Maestro John Baril and the amazing Central City Opera Festival Orchestra bringing you the thrill of full Broadway orchestrations to the event. I am also very excited to welcome back mezzosoprano Jennifer DeDominici to join me on stage, along with some outstanding artists from the 2019 BonfilsStanton Foundation Artists Training Program, which as I mentioned, helped me begin an operatic career which has happily included the wonderful world of Broadway. Currently, I am performing in the new World Tour of Phantom of the Opera, but I will be taking a break to come visit you in Colorado for Encore. I look forward to seeing you again at Central City Opera and I am already counting the days until I get back to one of my favorite places on earth — Central City, Colorado — to sing and present the glorious music of Broadway in one of the most charming opera houses ever built!

The 2019 Theatre of Dreams Gala soared to new heights with a glamorous evening of music, cocktails and a delectable four-course gourmet dinner in the modern atmosphere of The Hangar at Stanley Marketplace. Star of stage and screen, Tony Award-nominee Megan Hilty, along with Matt Cusson on piano, impressed the crowd with a set of show stopping hits from the seminal roles of her career. The Gala raised critical funds for the Central City Opera Festival productions, year-round programs and ongoing operations.

The Central City Opera Flower Girl Presentation is the oldest debutante ceremony in Colorado. This special Central City Opera tradition began in 1932 at the grand re-opening of the Opera House in the midst of the Great Depression. Two strong-willed women with powerful pioneer roots — Anne Evans and Ida Kruse McFarlane — engaged key members of the community and founded the Central City Opera House Association. With great vision, they created a summer music festival, bringing world-class theatrical and opera artists to the stage — a tradition that continues to this day. Two young ladies, Nancy Kountze and Elaine Oakes, were presented as the first Flower Girls. They often watched the rehearsals of the inaugural production of the play Camille and were asked to pass out nosegays to

members of the audience at intermission. Those bouquets were tossed across the footlights at the end of the production, much as the miners had tossed gold coins onto the stage during curtain calls in the 1880s. Prior to each Opera Festival, young women from prominent Colorado families are invited to be Central City Opera Flower Girls. A dynamite blast celebrating the rich mining history of Central City heralds their presentation and the church bells ring while the Flower Girls and their fathers dance the traditional “Yellow Rose Waltz” on Eureka Street in front of the Opera House. Patrons still receive flower nosegays to toss on stage, celebrating the beginning of another Opera Festival.
