ALL THEY WANT TO DO IS

Corydon Community Centre hopes to be recognized as a community leader in sports and recreation. Our mission is to provide accessible recreational opportunities to promote well-being and a sense of community in the neighborhood. There are many children in our area who are restricted from participating in sport because of cost. So, we have started a fund to provide financial assistance for sports and programs that are not covered under our normal program subsidy, such as summer camps and ice draft. Please contact 204.488.7000 to donate or if you would like to learn more about this important initiative.

8 DONATIONS The Corydon Community Centre has been part of the community for over 60 years. The Centre is partially funded by the City of Winnipeg. However, each year the Centre must rely on fundraising and donations in order to continue to meet the needs of our community.

2016-17 PRESIDENT’S REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY Corydon Community Centre is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors and managed and operated by full and part time staff members. Your 2017 – 2018 Board of Directors was nominated at our Annual General Meeting in June. We welcome two new board members, Jason Harvey and Tom Ormiston, to our Board and thank the individuals who agreed to have their name stand as a Board member for another year; Lynne McCarthy, Naomi Patey, Dana Ray, Lance Barber, Janet McMahon, Mike Hamm, Frank Ferguson, and Paul Krestanowich. I would like to extend our sincere gratitude to two of our longtime volunteers who will be leaving the Board this year. Pat O’Connor lead the amalgamation process as the first President of CCC and has been involved with community centre volunteering for close to 20 years. We thank him for his dedication and commitment to bettering community through the world of recreation and sport. Garry Dunne provided direction and support as the Chair of Human Resources along with volunteering with our bingo program. We thank him for 30+ years of community centre volunteering through his generosity of time and dedication to CCC. Pat will remain involved as a member of the Grant Park Recreation Campus CCC Steering Committee and Garry will continue to support our bingo program.

As well, we celebrated the life and volunteering of Dean Danforth by naming the social hall at our Crescentwood site in honor of him. We held a reception after our AGM with speeches and festivities. We thank Dean from the bottom of our hearts for all his does for our community. We have a talented and dedicated group of full-time staff members who work hard to fulfill our mission, maintain our values and reach our vision. They will continue their efforts in program and facility management over the next year. The Board extends our gratitude and appreciation to each of them and value them as employees of our organization. We look forward to an exciting year ahead.

12 Future Direction GRANT PARK RECREATION CAMPUS MASTER PLAN AND FEASIBILITY STUDY • In 2011, the City of Winnipeg announced that it was getting out of the arena business. • Charles A. Barbour Arena, was one of the 17 arenas identified. • In the fall of 2015, the City began a process to hire a consultant to assist with developing an overall strategy for the Grant Park Recreation Campus. • In May 2016, the City awarded the feasibility study to HTFC Planning and Design. • A number of meetings were held in fall 2016 and winter 2017 with Stakeholders (CCC is a key stakeholder) to discuss the campus concept. • The Grant Park recreation site is home to recreation facilities including the Pan Am Pool, the Charles A. Barbour Indoor Arena, and outdoor soccer fields. The City of Winnipeg is seeking to develop a coordinated campus plan that addresses the challenges and opportunities presented by these well-used recreational and institutional facilities. The plan explores the potential twinning of the Charles A. Barbour Arena and the addition of a new library to replace the existing River Heights Library. • Over the past few months, stakeholder representatives from the various facilities and user groups have been providing valuable input to help guide the campus concept plan development.

• HTFC report is planned to be submitted to City of Winnipeg at the end of September. • CCC will be meeting to establish our own planning process regarding the feasibility of further facility development. This will include public consultation with our stakeholders.

FUNDRAISING CAMPAIGN • We require a professional approach to fundraising to make sure that we are well positioned to take on a twin rink and all of the added programmable areas that could come with it. • In addition to raising funds for Grant Park Recreation Campus we also must raise funds to build up a large reserve that will allow us to operate our current facilities and meet our programing demands. • The Board hired Strategic Philanthropy to develop our Case for Support document. This document allows us to tell our story to our community and establish a foundation for our fundraising campaign. • CCC will be researching companies to complete a Fundraising Feasibility Study. • One of our key priority areas is the establishment of a fundraising “cabinet” within the next year. If you have expertise in fundraising and are interested in volunteering please let me know.

CORYDON COMMUNITY CENTRE CORYDONCC.COM

COMMUNITY CENTRES RELY ON VOLUNTEERS TO OPERATE • Volunteering can be fun and rewarding. It is a great way to meet people, develop new skills, and become part of a group that provides programs to so many people, most of which are the children of our neighborhood. • There are multiple volunteer needs and your commitment can be as big or as small as you feel comfortable with. You don’t have to run a program, or you may. It is all up to you. Your ideas are important to us as well. • We understand that everyone is busy. We know that we are all asked to volunteer in many capacities, but we hope you can find some time for your Community Centre. This is your Community Centre and it is run by volunteers with minimal staff who follow the direction of the volunteer board in order to achieve the important role we play in building a healthy, safe active, and vibrant community. One of the best in the city!

REFUNDS

Registration can be done online with Visa or MasterCard or in person with Debit or Cash.

Full refunds will be issued when a program is cancelled.

Registration is not complete until fees are paid and necessary forms are completed and submitted. Every child that wants to be in sport deserves to be in a sport. Subsidies are available. Anyone who requires financial support, please call office for assistance.

FEES ACTIVITY FEES Each program or sport has a fee based on the actual costs of providing the program (. ie: league registration fees, equipment, uniforms, instruction, etc.) and has its own budget w . hich is predicated on a break-even formula. Fee details are listed in each programs description. PARTICIPATION FEES This fee is levied for each activity per participant to contribute towards facility enhancements.

* Yearly fee must be paid in full at the Fall Registration and is valid from September 1st to August 31st of the following year, as it includes public skating (Friday and Sunday) for the season at the River Heights Site.

A $20.00 administration fee applies to all refund requests other than program cancellation. For sessions of eight weeks or more, no refund will be given after the third week of classes. To qualify for a refund, the office must be notified of the withdrawal prior to the end of the third week. Refunds will be prorated from the date the office receives and confirms notice of withdrawal.

LATE REGISTRATIONS A late fee of $30.00 per family will be charged effective September 10th. This is necessary due to the additional administration which occurs when registration is late. In some instances, teams have been formed, league fees paid and uniforms ordered. Our philosophy is such that anyone who wants to participate should be accommodated, but it must be recognized that there are extra costs incurred with late registrations and is not always possible. PLEASE REGISTER BEFORE THE DEADLINE TO AVOID LATE FEES!!!! Anyone living outside the official Corydon service area must register at their own community centre when sport league rules so dictate. When the sport or sport age group is not available at the home centre, written permission to transfer is required. This includes house league sports. This year there are some significant changes to the way the APHA will be administering the hockey program. These are exciting changes and designed to promote a consistency and continuity for the Novice A1 to Midget (8-17 yrs) program – all to benefit our catchment area. INTRODUCING THE WINTERHAWKS! This past spring the APHA directors moved to make all teams in the APHA fall under one name and brand- that is the WinterHawks. The APHA was the last association in Winnipeg to use community-based names and as other changes come from Hockey Canada and Hockey Manitoba this was the right time to align with the rest of the associations in Winnipeg. The process for team formation will stay the same as in previous years and every effort is made by representatives from Corydon and the APHA to follow a fair and equitable process for all players at all levels. You must be registered via the Hockey Canada link https://registration.hockeycanada.ca/Registration/?ID=944 One parent from each family must have completed the Respect in Sport Parent Program https://hmbparent.respectgroupinc.com If you choose to play in another program after the number of teams in each category has been formed, you will only have half your money refunded. Once the number of teams has been formed we are committed to those numbers so any drop in players is problematic and often leaves a team playing shorthanded or scrambling for players at the last minute.

If your child is 8 years old or older they may not ‘play out’ of Corydon CC. Every year numbers fluctuate and it is impossible to keep all kids from one community on the same team at each level. The APHA has adopted a model to build balanced teams at all levels of hockey so players have the best chance of developing their skills while playing with equal peers. This model means that various community centres within the APHA ‘host’ teams and your child will not necessarily play out of Corydon. This is one reason why the APHA has adopted the WinterHawks as a name for all teams. Another change is the elimination of body contract in all levels except Bantam A1 and Midget A1. The final change is the elimination of the Minor Bantam and Minor Midget divisions. Bantam is now both 13 and 14 year olds and Midget will be ages 15, 16 and 17. The Midget category now aligns with high school hockey and Bantam has changed to match the needs of the rest of Hockey Winnipeg.

As always it’s important to remember that all of the hockey programs through Corydon CC and the APHA are ‘grassroots’ and managed by volunteers. We ask that parents remember many people are giving up a lot of time to help make hockey fun, safe and rewarding for everyone who plays it and is involved. Please be respectful to coaches, managers, officials and staff as this is not an easy task and they have chosen to take it on for the benefit of our greater community. If you have not volunteered or are interested this is the time to start! You can ask Kathy Turner at the Corydon CC office about opportunities and when you register you can offer your services.

if you are thinking of getting involved this season.

Finally the reminder we have to make every year is about respecting officials and that includes the time keepers. Without our returning referees/timekeepers we would not be able to play any games. Please give them the respect and consideration they deserve and that you would want for your own child. Let’s play some hockey and have a great season!

We recognize that not everyone has the skills or experience to volunteer for on-ice roles, but there are many other ways that you can contribute. Your hockey convenors and managers will post volunteer opportunities as they arise throughout the season.

TRYOUTS If your child does not want to try out for A1 hockey, you have the option to declare at the time of registration and you will automatically be placed on the A3 team (or A2 if there is no A3 in that division)

COACHING If you are interested in becoming a coach there are a few things you need to know. You must have the appropriate certifications which are found on the Hockey Manitoba website www.hockeymanitoba.ca/coaches/requirements All coaches listed on each team’s final roster must have the correct certification by Dec 1, 2017 or the team will be fined and those coaches will not be allowed to be on the bench. There are no exceptions. Email hockey@corydoncc.com or houseleaguehockey@corydoncc.com CORYDON COMMUNITY CENTRE CORYDONCC.COM

JERSEYS WinterHawk jerseys are for game use only. Coaches will not allow game jerseys to be worn at practice. It is the only way to curb costs.

VOLUNTEER BOND Corydon Community Centre encourages all families to become actively involved in the success of our hockey program.

All families who have a hockey registrant between the ages of 5-8 years will be required to submit a $200.00 volunteer bond (one per family). We will be collecting these post dated cheques (March 31, 2018) at the Mandatory Parent Meeting on September 11th, 7:00 pm. For players age 9 – 12 years, a Volunteer Bond cheque is required if you are placed on a team being ‘hosted’ by Corydon. When your 3 hours of volunteer time have been completed, your bond cheque will be shredded. If your volunteer commitment is not met by the end of the season, your cheque will be cashed. If necessary, you can opt out of volunteering by simply dating your cheque for September 11, 2017. It will be cashed immediately and your bond will be considered fulfilled.

REFEREES Referees are essential to the game of hockey. If you are interested, please contact Spencer at ric.apha@gmail.com or go to the Hockey Manitoba website for further information www.hockeymanitoba.ca/officials/welcome

and to ensure that each house league team has a fair and balanced compliment of players. In order to achieve this goal we do NOT accept friend requests for any reason. The Initiation Program will run every weekend from October 7th - 22nd at the River Heights Site. Please note that players may not use support bars during the on-ice sessions.

APHA FEMALE HOCKEY The APHA provides girls of all ages a place to experience and develop their hockey skills in a fun and competitive environment. Known as the Polar Bears, we have a tiered program for all ages from Novice to Midget. The tryout evaluation process is similar to the male program to ensure consistency. Please note that once you step on the ice for the tryouts, you must remain in that program (you cannot switch from male to female or female to male).

CORYDON HOUSE LEAGUE (AGE 5-8) Corydon CC runs an in-house 5/6 league, exclusively out of the River Heights site and a 7/8 league that plays other house league teams within our APHA catchment area. For both age divisions, the season consists of 18-20 indoor games, starting in November and players can expect to practice both indoors and outdoors 1-2 times per week. Teams may also opt to participate in exhibition games and tournaments outside of the club We strongly encourage every house league player to participate in the pre-season “Initiation Program, which includes 4 x 1 hour on-ice sessions, focused on hockey skill development and the 2 x 1hour evaluation skate sessions. The evaluation skates are designed to assist us in the team formation process

Hockey Canada has mandated some major changes in the 7/8 division. Most significantly is the change in the game format for the first half of the season. Until December 31st, all games and practices will be half ice with the remaining portion of the ice being used as a Development Zone. These games will include referees, but there will be no off-sides. After January 1st, games will open to full ice with the season ending in playoffs for all teams. This format will provide improved development and more overall ice time for players. The full details of all the changes are outlined on both the Hockey Manitoba website www.hockeymanitoba.ca/players/novice as well as the APHA website www.aphahockey.ca

Mandatory House League Parent Meeting Each player is required to have a parent or guardian attend a mandatory parent meeting to review the 2017-18 House League Hockey program on

RINGETTE REGISTRATION ONLINE ONLY

26 Ringette The Ringette Program offers an opportunity for participants to have fun whilst growing both socially and physically by playing a team sport. The Ringette youth program accommodates ages 3 to 18. All Corydon registrants become members of the Southwest Winnipeg Ringette Association www.swra.ca (formerly APFG Ringette Association). This association is run by volunteers and is responsible for organizing amongst other things, registration, assessments, team formation, practice ice, coach support, on ice officials, time keepers, shot clock operators. Please visit the new website for more information. www.swra.ca

RINGETTE FAQ’S WHAT IS RINGETTE? Ringette is a really fast (some say faster than hockey!!) girls team sport played on ice with a ring, stick and full protective equipment. Each game consists of two 20-minute periods and takes an hour to complete. ARE THERE ANY OPPORTUNITIES TO TRY IT BEFORE COMMITTING? Yes, visit www.cometryringette.com for more information and upcoming dates. Ringette Manitoba is hosting an event on August 20, 2017 at East End Arena and on September 10 at Corydon CC. WHAT IS R4U? This is a 3-stage program for our younger players (ages 3-7). Professional instructors teach Ringette fundamentals and skating skills. All players at this level attend an assessment skate and then are placed at an appropriate level. For more information see www.ringette4U.ca MY DAUGHTER SKATED IN THE R4U PROGRAM LAST YEAR AND WE THINK SHE IS READY TO MOVE UP, HOW DOES THIS WORK? Any players born in 2010 that are looking to graduate from the R4U program should register at www.ringette4U.ca for the Early Assessment Sessions hosted by the Manitoba Ringette Association. These begin on Sunday, August 16, 2017.

CORYDON COMMUNITY CENTRE CORYDONCC.COM

Complete on the SWRA website at swra.ca only and NOT at Corydon CC. Online registration will begin in early August. Please register early as we start the team planning process in the first week of September.

MY DAUGHTER ISN’T A VERY STRONG SKATER, CAN SHE PLAY? Beginners, with the exception of the R4U age group (3-7), should ideally possess basic skating skills before registering for the sport. This means they can concentrate on improving their skating and learning the game not just trying to stay upright! HOW ARE TEAMS FORMED AT THE U10 AND U12 LEVELS? In these age groups, assessments are mandatory and will consist of 3 skates on September 17-24, 2017. The assessment information is then used to assist in team formation. WHAT ABOUT FOR THE OLDER AGE GROUPS (U14/U16/U18)? NEW THIS YEAR: Assessment in these age groups is now mandatory. A-team aspirants will have 3 skates, those not trying out for the A-team will have 1 assessment session. Assessments and team formation are otherwise the same as for the U10 / U12 age groups. HOW MUCH DOES IT COST? THE ACTIVITY FEE FOR RINGETTE HAS TWO COMPONENTS: 1) Actual cost will be posted on league website 2) Ice fees, payable to the team manager. This is approximately $200 per season, more if your daughter plays on an A team.

The more effort you put in the better your daughters experience will be!

IS THERE ANYTHING I CAN DO TO HELP GET MY DAUGHTER READY FOR ASSESSMENTS / THE NEW SEASON? ZUMBA BASIC

This is a low-intensity dance work-out combination of chair exercise where participants will learn the basic and easy to follow dance workout routines. With this workout, seniors or active older adults will stay healthy, active and feel young again with the oldies but goodies music that enhances memory, strength, endurance, balance and flexibility. Participants will be required to execute constant movement at their own pace. The best kind of workout is the kind that people enjoy doing and see the positive benefits of it.

Zumba is a popular fitness program inspired by Latin dance. The word “Zumba” comes from a Colombian word that means to move fast and have fun, which is just how people describe the routine. Using upbeat Latin music together with cardiovascular exercise, Zumba is aerobic dancing that is lots of fun and easy to learn. From high to low-intensity workout for all levels of fitness.
