2 President’s Message February 2017 Corydon Community Centre Inc. has a rich history going back to 1922 when Sir John Franklin C.C was established. We will be celebrating that facilities 100 anniversary in the very near future! The Crescentwood site (1945) and River Heights site (1946) also have long standing histories in our wonderful community. We amalgamated this history in April 2011 to become one Centre with three sites (Sir John Franklin, Crescentwood and River Heights). We have a Board of Directors, 10 full time staff and numerous part-time staff and volunteers who manage and operate CCC. Community Centres have been unique to the Winnipeg landscape since the 70’s. Our purpose is to provide facilities for accessible recreational opportunities to enhance quality of life and promote well-being and a sense of community in our neighbourhood. Our sense of community is very strong and we are recognized as community leaders in delivering quality programs within well maintained facilities. Our challenge moving forward is dealing with our current recreation infrastructure crisis that exists within all three of our sites. The City of Winnipeg owns the land and facilities at all three sites but only provides a minimal amount of annual funding for operating costs. We are presently researching the feasibility of launching a Fundraising Campaign to assist with ongoing and future facility operations and development. Our Annual General Meeting takes place on May 24th, 2017. CCC is always looking for individuals interested in becoming Board Members. We are in need of individuals with Human Resources, Volunteer Development, Recreation and Sport Programming and Fundraising experience and skill set to either sit on our board or become a committee member. If you are interested in finding out more about these opportunities please contact me at Colleen.Plumton@umanitoba.ca prior to March 31st, 2017. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our dedicated staff and volunteers for all they do to ensure CCC is managed, operated and programmed to the best of our abilities now and into the future. Our community deserves the very best from us.

Sincerely, Colleen G. Plumton President Corydon Community Centre

ALL THEY WANT TO DO IS

Corydon Community Centre hopes to be recognized as a community leader in sports and recreation. Our mission is to provide accessible recreational opportunities to promote well-being and a sense of community in the neighborhood. There are many children in our area who are restricted from participating in sport because of cost. So, we have started a fund to provide financial assistance for sports and programs that are not covered under our normal program subsidy, such as summer camps and ice draft. Please contact 204.488.7000 to donate or if you would like to learn more about this important initiative.

8 DONATIONS The Corydon Community Centre has been part of the community for over 60 years. The Centre is partially funded by the City of Winnipeg. However, each year the Centre must rely on fundraising and donations in order to continue to meet the needs of our community.

FEES ACTIVITY FEES Each program or sport has a fee based on the actual costs of providing the program (. ie: league registration fees, equipment, uniforms, instruction, etc.) and has its own budget w . hich is predicated on a break-even formula. Fee details are listed in each programs description. PARTICIPATION FEES This fee is levied for each activity per participant to contribute towards facility enhancements.

SPORT TEAM FORMATIONS

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

All teams are formed based on the number of registered players-if numbers warrant, 2 or 3 teams may be formed in one age group in certain sports. If teams are playing in the same division they will be as equally balanced as possible. If numbers are such that there are too many to be placed on one team but not enough for an additional team to be formed, then players will have to be transferred to the next community centre needing players. The method used to decide which players are to be transferred is:

We are always looking for parent and community involvement. Please note that there are many ways to get involved in our sports and we welcome all those interested in any of the below to contact kturner@corydoncc.com.

1. Late registrations 2. Volunteers to transfer 3. Players from outside Corydon catchment 4. Lottery

* Any player registering late has no guarantee of a position on a Corydon CC Team.

• Coaches • Assistant Coaches • Team Managers • Team Safety/First Aid Person • Parent Communication Liaison • Sport Committee Representatives (Basketball, Baseball, Football, Soccer, Softball)

Thanks again for your continued involvement and commitment to sport and activity for youth. Here’s to a safe, successful 2017 season!

UNIFORM DEPOSITS Basketball Baseball Football Softball

Baseball

TEAM SELECTION

Baseball (hardball) is for boys and girls ages 5-18. The baseball season runs from the beginning of May through June with games usually scheduled during weekday evenings. We offer developmental teams for children and youth who have not played before as well as more competitive teams for those who have. Baseball teams are travelling teams. Usually a team plays the same number of home and away games. Because of player numbers, some players may be asked to play for teams from other community centres. The playoff format has not yet been determined, but other than playoff teams, everyone finishes by the end of June.

Tryouts will once again be held with Charleswood Minor Baseball and Tuxedo Community Centre to form one AA team at each age division from our combined 3 neighbourhoods. At this time independent evaluators will assess players’ ability and willingness to participate in AA. Players/Families who have demonstrated AA ability must commit to the time demands. *There WILL BE one AA team this year at each age division – 11U, 13U, 15U and 18U. We create as many A teams as needed according to the registration numbers.

TRYOUTS Tryouts are only for those who want to play AA. Players who want to be considered for our AA teams MUST ATTEND BOTH SESSIONS OF THESE TRYOUTS. Sunday, April 9 UWinnipeg Field House Saturday, April 15 Home Run Sports Training Centre There will be an additional fee of $30.00 per player to participate in tryouts, payable at registration. This year ONLY players who want to play on the AA team need to attend tryouts, though anyone wanting to participate in traditional tryouts are welcome.A handout showing the exact time slots for each age group will be available at registration. 7U - tons of fun for the kids with emphasis on fun,

basic skills and learning the game in a non-competitive environment. Rally Cap is a parent-run program so several volunteers are required. 9U - play a more organized game of ball using a pitching machine. Games are 2-3 times per week against other community centres with an emphasis on team play, sportsmanship and continued skill mastery. 11U - is the first year when players start pitching and AA is introduced.

Players are required to provide their own gloves, batting helmets and baseball pants. Bats will be provided for all age groups except Midget. Midget players are encouraged to purchase their own wooden bats this year.

LATE REGISTRATIONS

13U - A/AA remains at the community centre but at this age AAA is introduced (the highest level of ball at this age group is a regional team, comprised of the best players in all of Winnipeg South)

We try to have 12 -14 players per team and registration will be cut off at that point. Late registrations will not be accepted if there are not enough coaches. Late registrations, if accepted, will be subject to a $30 late fee over and above the registration fee.

15U/18U - A/AA remain at the community centre with the Chiefs as the AAA regional team

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

UMPIRES Older players (13+) may want to consider umpiring. It’s fun and the pay is great! $25.00 - $40.00 per game Please contact the office for details of upcoming clinics.

As coaches and volunteers are needed for all teams, there will be a sign-up sheet at registration. Most teams will need a scorekeeper, pitch counter, manager, first aid person, equipment manager, someone to install the bases before each game, coaches, and if possible, someone who can umpire if the scheduled umpire cannot make it.

Any player wishing to try out for AA must attend tryouts. If your child is selected for the AA team, please note that the time commitment and expectations are greater than in A-level baseball.

All of these positions are volunteer positions. If we do not have volunteers to help out, the kids don’t play. Please keep in mind that we need volunteers when you register. Knowledge of baseball is not a pre-requisite to volunteering. All coaches are required to complete the Respect in Sport training from Sport Manitoba. It is free and on-line.

STORY BY KAREN PAULS PHOTO BY DAVE CHAMPION-TAYLOR

If you’ve ever been to a social at the Crescentwood Community Centre, chances are you’ve been served a drink by Mr. D. For more than four decades, Dean Danforth and his family have been volunteering at the club (now part of the Central Corydon Community Centre). From running the Bingo to coaching, managing, and playing on sports teams, the club has been an important part of their lives. “I really like to be with the people. Different people come along and interesting people you met over the years have become good friends of mine. Years later, we remember the good times,” Danforth says. At a time when schedules are increasingly busy, he encourages other families to get involved – as a way of creating community.

DANFORTH AND HIS WIFE HAVE BOTH HAD MONEY DONATED TO

VOLUNTEER RECOGNITION

THE CORYDON COMMUNITY CENTRE SINCE 2011.

WHEN DID YOU FIRST GET INVOLVED WITH THE COMMUNITY CENTRE? “It was 1974-75 but my wife had been involved before that with my daughter doing baton lessons. We moved to Crescentwood area in 72.”

WHAT SPORTS WERE YOU INVOLVED IN? Danforth’s son, Christopher, played football for the Crescentwood Grizzlies. His team won the city championships in 1982. His daughter, Kerri, played baseball.

First, Danforth was asked to sit on the board of directors, but within a year, he and his wife Stephanie were running the Bingo program, along with Bill and Bertha Kumka. They were fundraising to build a new gymnasium. “It was only supposed to be until the end of June because Bingos always close for the summer. But it was a great success.”

Danforth was a manager or convenor for the baseball program for many years. In 1993, he was manager of the Winnipeg South Peewee team that went to the Nationals in Maple Ridge, BC. They came in 5th in Canada that year. “It was quite an exciting time to go to the Nationals.”

The board let them run it all summer, then they formally took over from the Ladies’ Auxiliary in the fall. After Kumka retired and moved away, Danforth became the Bingo Convenor - from 1976-1996. He and his wife have also been responsible for hall rentals since 1979 and they’ve been bartending 25-30 events/year for the last 15 years.

Danforth also managed or coached many of the teams Christopher played for. During the 1980s, the Crescentwood football program was dominant in the city, often having as many as 12 teams. He and Gary Dunne set up a BBQ program on the weekends and would serve 25-30 dozen hamburger and hotdogs a day. WHY DO YOU LIKE VOLUNTEERING? I really like to be with the people. It’s been interesting, being with a lot of the young kids, these young people have

all grown up and have families of their own. They come back to the community club for socials. They say - Mr. D, would you give me a social at the community club? Some are bringing their children, some even have grandchildren already. It’s always nice – a child you saw at 12 or 14 years, later comes back and he’s married, he comes to a social and tells you who he is. Or he says, “You’re Chris Danforth’s dad.” I get that a lot in the mall or shopping centre. WHY IS COMMUNITY CLUB SPORTS SO IMPORTANT? You gotta have an outlet for the kids. The majority of kids should get into some kind of sports. You have to keep the kids busy. You can’t let them sit on the computer or iPhone, you gotta get them out and get them active. They need a space for them to run and play. Something in the neighborhood, close to home, that they can do with their buddies. My son has a network that goes all over the city of kids he knew and played with. Community clubs are also less competitive. Some kids just want to play with their

friends. They don’t wanna be stars or go to practice 3-4 times and play a game every week. That’s the role of the community club. WHY DO YOU THINK PEOPLE SHOULD VOLUNTEER AT THE COMMUNITY CENTRE? It’s become quite organized, quite structured over the last 10-15 years. Everybody has to step up or these kids fall through the cracks and there’s nothing for them to do. As a parent, you have to step up and help. For example, we haven’t had a soccer convenor at the community club for several years now. It means somebody is doing two jobs. It limits the opportunities for the kids. We have a website for volunteers. People should check it out and see what they could do. http:// www.corydoncc.com/volunteer -opportunities.html WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE CANTEEN SNACK? When we were BBQ-ing, a smokie straight out of the BBQ was the best. When the Winter Carnival is on, there’s always perogies, that’s always popular. Pancake breakfasts are always a treat.

All camps offer a chance to make new friends, enjoy the outdoors and have fun being a kid. Each week is packed with fun activities, field trips and special events to make unforgettable memories. DAY CAMP Our extraordinary camp runs for 9 week long sessions over the summer, beginning on July 4th and running until September 1st. While your child is enrolled at our camp, he or she will enjoy a variety of games, crafts, sports, swimming, as well as field trips.
