February 21, 2011— Students, faculty, staff, alumni, and guests gathered at Rose Memorial Auditorium for a memorial service to commemorate the life of Dr. Rex Drilon - the first Filipino President of Central Philippine University. Centralians were enlightened by the visionary life of the late President, through the inspirational message of Hon. Demy P. Sonza, Iloilo Provincial board member, and Prof. Lucy L. de la Fuente, former faculty member of the English Department. Both speakers are alumni and members of the CPU Corporation and noted Drilon not only as an educator,

administrator and humanitarian, but also as a man of integrity, character and faith. Indeed, it was a time for reflection as well as a thanksgiving for the life welllived of the late President. Prior to the convocation, a memorial service was held at the Evangelical Garden, Jaro, Iloilo City, where the officers of the administration, deans, principals, department heads, alumni, family and friends laid down their floral offerings for the late president. Drilon was CPU president from 1966-1971 when he died a sudden death on Feb. 21, 1971, but his life as an epitome of a true Centralian has been and will forever be a significant part of CPU history.

CPU Republic Week held

TAKING THE LEAD CPUR officials marching with pride during the parade.

By Reyshimar C. Arguelles

The theme for this year’s CPU Republic (CPUR) Week held on January 31 - February 4 was “CPUR: Centralians Pursuing a United Republic,” and indeed, the events that took place in the five-day affair displayed proofs of solidarity among students, faculty and staff alike.

The first day kicked off with a Fun Night Run where Philip John Otañes (BSCE-3) and Cristine Sebuan (BSHRM-1) became first placers after a hustle around the campus. Otañes outran the other participants in the male category and won Php 1,000 while Sebuan dominated the female category and bagged Php 1,500. CPUR President Edgar Biñas

said that the reason why the prizes for the female category were higher than that of the male category was that they (the CPUR) were not able to give prizes for the female competitors in the last Fun Run held at CPU Centennial Subdivision, Pavia. Close to 300 participants (including students, alumni and faculty members) were engaged in the Fun Night Run. The last day of the celebration was tuned up with a series of alternative classes. The 2009 Indian film “The 3 Idiots” was also shown on the fourth floor of the Uy Student Union Building. Rockapalooza 2011 ended the CPUR Week with a taste of the local rock scene, as a myriad of Ilonggo bands unleashed riffs and nifty drum and bass skills to the fancy of the audience that gathered on the Big Field.

This year’s International Day Celebration, held January 21, was aimed at reviving the enthusiasm of the University’s soccer community. Grounded on the theme “Expanding Horizons,” which reflected the Prayer of Jabez in I Chronicles 4:10, the celebration also recognized the foreign students of the University’s International Program. The celebration started at 7:00 AM with a foot parade composed of foreign and exchange students, Physical Education students and the University’s varsity football teams – from the elementary and high school departments, to the collegiate level as well as the alumni. The opening program was held at the Rose Memorial Auditorium and a collection of audio-visual presentations that emphasized the daily lives of international students, which most Filipino students do not know much of was shown.

Also highlighted in the videos was the football fevers which has spread throughout the University in the past years. After the opening ceremony, an exhibition game was held between the Negros Occidental Private Schools Sports, Cultural and Educational Association selected team composed of footballers from the University of Negros Occidental – Recolettos (UNO-R) and the University’s international football team composed mostly of Korean students. The University was able to beat its adversary on the field (3-0) in a match manifesting the World Cup-style performances of both teams. At 5:00 PM, the International Day Celebration Cultural Show was held at the Rose Memorial Auditorium and showcased Korean students performing Filipino folk dances with their Filipino counterparts. Students from Pyeongtaek University, Hoseo University and Chosun University and members from the Korean Campus Crusade for Christ and the Korean Symphony Orchestra performed dances like the Cariñosa, Sayaw sa Bangko and the Tinikling, side by side with the CPU Sarisaot Dance Troupe.

CPU Republic plants ‘Tree of Love’ for former janitor

To celebrate the season through its own little way, the CPU-Republic “planted” the Christmas Tree of Love on December 13, with students writing their thoughts on love, peace and hope on cartolina– made stars, which they hung on the tree’s branches. To hang a message on the tree, one should pay Php 10. This money went to a donation fund for Mr. Isidro Jacaban of Sambag, Jaro, who was a former janitor assigned at the CPU High School.

Jacaban cleaned the classrooms and halls of the CPUHS for 15 years until he became paralyzed in 2005. He has three children whom he needs to provide for. CPUR President Edgar Biñas said that the CPUR was able to collect approximately Php 4,000 from the Christmas Tree of Love and gave Php 1,500 in cash and Php 3,000 worth of groceries to Mr. Jacaban and his family on December 23, a night before Noche Buena. Through the efforts of the CPUR and the cooperation of the student body, a soul who once served the University celebrated Christmas with hope amidst great physical disability.

Rhoda Avila, secretarygeneral of the DSWP, who was the resource speaker of the symposium, said that they (the DSWP) grabbed the opportunity to share the reproductive health situation of the country and also to enlist the support of the students in favor of the bill. The RH Bill, known as House Bill No. 5043, aims for

a “comprehensive policy on responsible parenthood, reproductive health and population development and for other purposes.” It has also been a subject of debate between its adherents and its critics in the Roman Catholic Church. Avila elucidated that the latest Pulse Asia Survey has shown that (as of November 30 last year) 69% of Filipinos are in favor of the bill. Avila added that 154 congressmen support reproductive health bill.

Studio 23’s Barkada Buzz Ride invades CPU By Reyshimar C. Arguelles

Ending the last week on campus for the year 2010 with music and merriment, Studio 23’s Barkada Gimik Buzz Ride entered the University with performances by pop-rock band Imago which performed at the University Gymasium, December 15.

The event started at past four in the afternoon, with ABSCBN showbiz anchor Gretchen Fullido and actor-model Xian Lim as hosts. They warmed up the audience with games which

showed how talented CPU students were. The winners of the games were given special button pins to serve as their “tickets” for the Buzz Ride. After the pre-concert hype, especially with girls swooning over Xian, Imago emerged from the backstage and started the evening with their music. The band, composed of Aia de Leon (vocalist/guitarist), Myrene Academia (bassist), Tim Cacho (lead guitarist) and Zach Lucero (drummer), played

notable tracks like Akap, Taralets, and their rendition of the Eraserheads’ Spolarium. After the mini-concert, students who garnered the special button pins went on a “Buzz Ride” towards Smallville where they had free dinner with the band at JAQ’s Bar. Studio 23, through ABS-CBN Iloilo, made the Barkada Gimik Buzz Ride possible with the help of the CPU Cultural Affairs Office, Office of Student Affairs, Chaplains’ Office and the CPU Republic.
