When Orange General Hospital opened its doors on November 5, 1918, Orlando and the nation were in the midst of historical events with great significance: World War I would end in just six days, the Spanish influenza pandemic already had killed more than a half million Americans and national elections brought sweeping congressional changes. But few who celebrated the opening of the new hospital, including the local physicians and business leaders who had joined together to make it a reality, could have foreseen the historical significance of their actions. Over the decades, this 50-bed hospital would evolve into a leading healthcare system with multiple facilities and more than 2,400 beds, transforming healthcare in Central Florida and providing a century of caring for its residents. Situated on the site of today’s Orlando Health Orlando Regional Medical Center (ORMC), the four-story structure was surrounded by orange trees, a cow pasture and a dairy. Only two floors were built out, with separate wards for men and women on the first floor and private rooms on the second floor. With no gas or electricity, the hospital used candles and kerosene oil lamps at night, and sterile water had to be brought in. There was no such thing as air conditioning. The hospital’s first patient gave birth to a baby boy, named Seaborn, by candlelight.

1935 Major improvements

1921

The first nursing class graduated. Within two years, the hospital had earned such a reputation that young women were eager to come to Orlando to train as nurses. The first students to enroll slept in vacant rooms in the hospital, with the first dormitory opening in 1922. Orlando Health’s nursing school continued until 1973. 8

with air conditioning for some areas, including the intensive care unit, and surgical and labor suites. This welcome addition was in sharp contrast to the hospital’s early days when windows were always open, even during surgeries, and rooms were cooled by blowing a fan over ice-filled washtubs.

1945 Orange General Hospital was

the first successful open-heart surgery in Central Florida, followed by the opening of the first coronary care unit in Central Florida — one of only a few in the country. The 1960s saw several more medical milestones, including the area’s first cardiac catheterization, pacemaker insertion and ultrasound, and the first mammography in Florida.

During the 1980s, golf legend Arnold Palmer toured the NICU and pledged his support for a new children’s hospital that would later bear his name.

73-year-old buildings were torn down to make way for a $66 million expansion of the Orlando Health downtown campus. Soon after, the Orlando Cancer Center opened, serving 3,000 patients with 40,000 outpatient visits in its first year. The campus expansion continued over the years, including the 2015 addition of the North Tower at Orlando Health ORMC.

2006 Orlando Health Winnie

Palmer Hospital for Women & Babies opened, continuing the legacy of the Palmer family. Today, Orlando Health Winnie Palmer delivers more than 13,000 babies each year and more than 1,400 receive care in the Alexander Center for Neonatology.

1983 Orlando Health became

home to the region’s only Level One Trauma Center, the highest level of trauma care, and only the second in the state at the time. In 1985, the Air Care Team helicopter rescue service was established, serving a 26-county area.

hen you’re planning a bridal shower for your bestie, you want the food you’re serving to be effortless for you and taste good to your guests. These delicious and creative party food ideas are quick to prepare, easy to serve and will keep your main focus on spoiling the bride. Snacks on a Stick Skewers are a quick, easy appetizer for any pre-wedding celebration, and the menu options are endless. A meatball skewer is a great place to start. Just melt some mozzarella cheese on a meatball and put it through a skewer. Add a basil leaf on top for extra flavor and pizzazz, and put different sauces on the side, such as marinara, alfredo and pesto, for guests to dip. You can make beef, chicken, turkey and even meatless

meatballs to give your guests more variety. Lighter options include Greek salad skewers with kalamata olives, cherry tomatoes, cucumbers and feta cheese or caprese salad skewers layered with tomato, basil and mozzarella balls then drizzled with balsamic glaze. These bitesized snacks look classy on a tray and are guaranteed to be a guest favorite. Pretty Platters Platters are an essential food staple at any event because they look appealing and offer a variety of food items for guests to choose from. Instead of buying pre-made platters, make your own so you can design it any way you like. Cheese and antipasto options are classic, but consider some other options as well. DIRECTIONS: In a large sauce pot, bring wine and sugar to a boil. Reduce heat to simmer and add berries. Allow mixture to bubble slowly for 10 minutes until the berries begin to absorb the liquid. Remove pan from heat and allow to cool. While berries cool make the cheese mixture. Slice vanilla bean lengthwise using a paring knife. Open the pod and use the knife to scrape out all of the seeds. Place seeds in a medium bowl and discard pod or set aside for later use. Add mascarpone, ricotta cheese, honey, and vanilla extract to the bowl and whip until well combined. Using 4 wine glasses or small glass dessert bowls, place 1/4 of the crushed shortbread cookies in the bottom of each. Next, layer approximately 1/4 of the cheese mixture and 1/4 of the berry mixture, ending with a sprinkling of the crushed cookies in each. makes your bridal shower stand out. If you don’t want to do pizza, there are so many other build-your-own options. For example, you could do an ice cream sundae bar, taco bar or even a macaroni and cheese bar.

Pizza and Flatbread Bar Add an interactive element to the party with a build-your-own pizza or flatbread bar. The best part is that guests are guaranteed to love their meal because they’re customizing it themselves. You can also cut each one into bite-sized pieces and try everyone’s unique creations. WEDDING TRENDS

Unveiled Your guide to wedding fashion and beauty for 2019. Compiled by Lyndsay Fogarty

Beauty Inspired by Royalty

T

he spring 2018 wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle at Windsor Castle continues to inspire brides around the world. Markle’s classic style made its mark on the wedding industry as a look that extends to every season, budget and bride. Incorporate these three trends into your big day to transform your wedding into a royal affair. 1. Effortless hair: A modern center part and face-framing, easy-totuck layers were the centerpiece of Markle’s simple updo. The rest of her hair was gathered in a loose chignon with minimal product holding it together — a look that her hair stylist described as a messy bun that was controlled. 2. Natural makeup: Markle’s makeup included varying shades of brown eye shadow to create a smoky eye and a pop of color with a coral blush and tinted lip balm. Neutral palettes are a simple way to pick up a trend that won’t look dated when you look back on your photos down the road. 3. Royal accessories: Keeping your veil in place with a tiara is one way for brides to go for the full princess look. At Gianni Vincent Jewelers in Windermere, the Hope Tiara features a 5-carat, heart-shaped diamond in addition to other jewels. Ninety percent of the proceeds from special occasion rental costs benefit Runway to Hope to fund research, treatment and care for children fighting cancer.

Designer: Allure Bridals Trends for 2019: “Emphasis on geometric appliques, delicate buttons, and soft, stretch lace and crepe fabrics.” Inspiration: “Fast fashion is universal, so designs are not only available more immediately but designs seem to be pulled from more previously inaccessible places. We could be inspired by classic bridal designs, Instagram and a 1960s vintage bridal look all at once.” The buttons that run down the back of this mermaid-shaped Allure Bridals dress add a trendy touch to a classic wedding dress design.

Designer: Winnie Couture Trends for 2019: “Illusion backlines and plunging necklines featured on figure-hugging silk and lace gowns make a bride feel beautiful on the inside, which radiates outward for everyone to see.” Inspiration: “We are and will always be influenced by the brides. Understanding that every bride is different, and being able to make every bride’s bridal vision a reality, is how this brand was born!” Making a statement with bold necklines and illusion backs has been a popular trend with brides that extends into Winnie Couture’s 2019 designs.

Designer: Katherine Tash Trends for 2019: “Colors such as soft blush, lavendar and light blue in dipdyed silks or custom embroideries; the naked dress (or the illusion dress); and tailored separates like tea-length skirts, jumpsuits, silk slip dresses and blazers” Inspiration: “I can’t speak for any other designers, but I think social media has such a big effect on the fashion industry in general right now. I think we’re at peak influencer, peak trend forecasting, and peak fast fashion.” This naked dress by Katherine Tash highlights the beading and embroidery in the design without adding bulky weight to the bride, allowing her to shine on her big day. www.CentralFloridaLifestyle.com

13

Designer: DAALARNA Trends for 2019: “Unique technology and styles, capes, interesting necklines and collars.” Inspiration: “I am highly influenced by new technological advancements and technical improvements. These are largely seen nowadays not only in the way we make our gowns but in the way fabrics are made.“ A combination of the collar and cape trends, this dress by DAALARNA makes a statement. It also covers a bride’s “something blue” requirement for her walk down the aisle.

What’s Trending in Shoes Designer: Jessica Bedard Shoes Trends for 2019: “Closed pump, matte satin and neutral colors.” Inspiration: “I usually look at old magazines. Trends usually come back every 20 years, so it’s a good reference for me.” The classic ELLE Ankle Tie Pump represents all of Jessica Bedard’s trend predictions for 2019 with its closed, pointed toe and satin finish in the perfect wedding neutral: silver.

Fashion Highlight! Whether you’re looking for a more low-key walk down the aisle or want something more comfortable to change into for your reception, a bridal jumpsuit like this one from Wilderly Brides is a trendy way to show your own unique style. 14

Do I Need Travel Insurance for My

Honeymoon?

Q:

How travel insurance can protect you and your loved ones any time you travel abroad.

My fiancé and I are getting married in July and plan to take a honeymoon abroad to Africa’s Congo. A friend of mine suggested that we should prepare a simple estate plan and obtain travel insurance before we depart. Our only assets are our incomes, cars and nominal bank accounts. We’re covered on our parents’ medical insurance policies. So, why would we spend extra money we don’t have saved or budgeted for estate planning and travel insurance?

By Kristen M. Jackson, Jackson Law P.A.

A:

Young newlyweds, intoxicated by romance, love and passion for each other, are often deaf to the advice of others, especially those closest to them. Advice given by parents and friends seems to be remembered most at times when it is too late, such as when a catastrophic accident occurs abroad during the honeymoon. Regarding estate planning, while you should have a will or trust to pass assets if you die, you should have, at minimum, a durable power of attorney that gives someone you trust access to your assets in the event of an emergency while traveling abroad. Regarding travel insurance, although Kristen M. Jackson is the founding partner of Jackson Law PA (407-363-9020). She is experienced in estate planning, real estate law, business and contract law. Her firm has earned an AV rating by MartindaleHubbell signifying the highest level of professional excellence as obtained through opinions from members of the bar and judiciary.

16

Central Florida Lifestyle | February 2019

some health insurance companies may pay customary and reasonable hospital costs abroad, few policies will pay for medical evacuation back to the United States. Consider an example article published by the U.S. Department of State warning travelers. While traveling through Laos, a young couple crashed into a water buffalo cart, killing the buffalo, smashing the car and leaving the woman driver with multiple fractures to her arm and leg. The couple had neither the means to pay for damages caused by the accident nor for the woman’s injuries and medical evacuation. Until arrangements for payment could be made, the Laotian authorities detained the couple. It took six weeks following the accident for the couple’s families in the U.S. to obtain and wire the funds required by Laotian authorities for the couple’s release. In similar stories, couples have rented motor scooters in countries throughout the world that have resulted in wrecks, damage to property and injury. It’s not uncommon for

authorities in countries abroad to require payments for damages, medical attention and evacuation home. I, personally, can corroborate such events as it happened to my husband and me during our own honeymoon in the Bahamas. Uninsured at the time, we rented a motor scooter and had a head-on collision with a car. Although I was unhurt, my husband suffered a severely crushed and dislocated shoulder injury. Although we were also warned by our parents to protect ourselves from such serious consequences during our honeymoon, like so many others intoxicated and captivated by the fanciful romantic busyness of newlyweds, we failed to heed our parents’ advice. Remember that many things can happen while traveling abroad, such as assault, robbery, accidents, illness or natural disasters. Before traveling outside the U.S. and experiencing a disaster while abroad, take the time to prepare estate planning documents and obtain travel insurance to protect you and those traveling with you.

Interior Design Trends for 2019 Revamp your space by incorporating some of the year’s biggest trends.

By Lauren Margolis

D

esigning a home can get overwhelming with so many details — both trendy and classic — that you can put into a room to make it your own. Here are some of 2019’s biggest interior design trends to help guide you on your next design project. 1. N atural Elements Having organic materials, natural stones and greenery in the home is a big trend. It makes the space feel fresh and allows you to bring some outdoor elements in. 2. Terrazzo This material is in and it’s bringing a throwback feel with it. Consisting of marble or granite chips set in polished concrete, terrazzo comes in different shades that can be used on more than just flooring, including on coffee tables, shower walls or countertops. 3. Floral patterns Florals are fun, fresh and girly. They’re a creative way to bring nature indoors. Expect to see this pattern on anything from wallpapers to bedding 18

and chairs. Floral patterns brighten up any room with a pop of color.

fun way to add an interesting element to a room while making it feel larger.

4. Geometric patterns Incorporating geometric patterns, whether it’s on a wall or on a throw pillow, is a great way to add a bold statement piece to any room. Like florals, geometric designs have the ability to brighten any space.

8. Shades of Green Green will be trending in 2019 because rich greens are associated with nature. This color has a calming effect and can make a room feel more relaxed, yet elegant, so don’t be afraid to include it in your design.

5. Curvy Designs Curvy furniture inspired by the 1970s is making a comeback. Everything from smaller chairs to big couches are becoming curved, making a space feel more intimate yet trendy and chic.

9. Mixing Vintage with New This year, it’s in with the old and the new. Incorporating vintage pieces in a new design adds character and personality. For example, hanging an antique light fixture over a modern dining room set provides a touch of charm while keeping the rest of the room fresh and new.

6. Art Deco Invite this design style into your home for a glamorous feel. Art Deco is all about varying shapes, textures and bright colors. Mixing metals can also add a touch of Art Deco to your home. 7. Statement Ceilings A room that’s all one color can be boring. Instead of painting an accent wall, consider a statement ceiling. It’s a

10. Velvet Furniture Designers believe velvet will be one of 2019’s biggest trends. It is a luxurious, fun fabric that will liven up a space. Consider a bright velvet for couches and headboards. If you want to include a nod to this trend in a smaller way, arrange some velvet throw pillows on your furniture.

or many sports fans, March is reserved for college basketball “madness.” This year, Florida sports fans will have a nearly month-long alternative. From Feb. 28 to March 24, the world’s best professional golfers will be on display for the PGA TOUR’s annual “Florida Swing.” It will be more robust than in recent years, as the TOUR’s revamped schedule now includes four consecutive Florida events for the first time since 2016. For those interested in attending one or more of these events, the time to start planning is now. Stop 1: The Honda Classic PGA National Palm Beach Gardens, FL February 28 – March 3 The opening leg of the Florida Swing is expected to be one of the deepest fields of the early 2018-2019 PGA TOUR season. World No. 2 and 3-time major champion, Brooks Koepka, recently committed to the event. The three-time All-American at Florida State University is one of only seven men to win back-to-back U.S. Open titles. Koepka is expected to be joined by defending Honda Classic Champion, Justin Thomas, and south Florida native, Rickie Fowler.

20

Central Florida Lifestyle | February 2019

Stop 2: Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard Bay Hill Club & Lodge Orlando, FL March 7 – March 10 Arnold Palmer’s legacy lives on at one of the premiere events on the PGA TOUR schedule. Players will not only play for one of the largest checks ($1.6 million) of any non-major championship or WGC event, but the winner will also don the famous red cardigan sweater, an Arnold Palmer staple. Though not official at this time, Tiger Woods, whose eight victories at Bay Hill ties only Sam Snead for the most at any one event in PGA TOUR history, is expected to play. Rory McIlroy, the 2018 champion, will try to defend his title. Stop 3: The Players Championship TPC Sawgrass Ponte Vedra Beach, FL March 14 – March 17 Often referred to as golf ’s fifth major, The Players Championship returns in March for the first time since 2007. One of golf ’s toughest tests will be taken on by one of golf ’s deepest fields. With an ambiance unlike any other, the famed island green at the 17th hole typically leads

to one of the most dramatic finishes in the sport. In the last 25 years, only Tiger Woods has won the event more than once. In doing so, Woods joined just five others as the only men to win more than once since the tournament’s inception in 1974. The defending champion is 2012 U.S. Open winner, Webb Simpson. Stop 4: Valspar Championship Innisbrook Resort (Copperhead) Palm Harbor, FL March 21 – March 24 Copperhead has always been one of the TOUR’s most respected courses; however, coming off the heels of The Players Championship will be a new challenge. A staple on the Florida Swing since 2007, another challenge for Valspar is that it now precedes the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play in Austin, Texas, which begins on March 27. With the Masters just weeks away, many top players may be looking for some much-needed time off. Last year, Paul Casey emerged victorious over a hard-charging Tiger Woods and Patrick Reed. Jordan Spieth, who has been struggling early in the 2018-2019 season, won in 2015.

How to Pair Wine and Chocolate

Master Sommelier George Miliotes provides tips and insight into what makes these two indulgences the perfect match.

ust as peanut butter goes with jelly and grilled cheese with tomato soup, wine is quite the match for chocolate. Master Sommelier George Miliotes of Wine Bar George believes the bitterness and richness of chocolate is what makes it complement wine so well. Pairing these two indulgences isn’t as cut and dry as you may think though. “There’s a wide range of feelings as to what goes best together,” Miliotes says. “So part of it should be guided by your own taste and what you think is great.” The Chocolate Experience A highlight of the Wine Bar George menu is The Chocolate Experience. This pairing demonstration invites guests to use all five of their senses as they explore how dark chocolate, milk chocolate and white chocolate taste with a selection of three wines. While opinions vary, Miliotes says guests typically gravitate to white chocolate with moscato, milk chocolate with a fruity and dry red wine and dark chocolate with a sweet red wine. “I think part of the fun for everybody, and the reason we have The 22

Chocolate Experience at the restaurant, is so you can mix and match and taste and see what you think is best as opposed to having to absolutely go by what the master sommelier or anybody else says,” Miliotes says. Do It Yourself The restaurant’s chocolate and wine pairing experience offers the chance to try higher-end wines, but Miliotes says that a pairing can also be done on a fun, drinkable level at home with friends. “You could be master sommeliers for the day and see which ones you think goes best together,” he says. Miliotes suggests preparing a buffet with good-quality white, milk and dark chocolate. Then have a sparkling sweet wine like Le Perlina Moscato, a sweet red wine like Jam Jar Sweet Shiraz and a dry red wine like Chateau St. Michelle Merlot ready to pour. You can even ask your friends to bring their favorite wine and see how well they pair. If you’re feeling really crazy, throw some good, old-fashioned candy bars into the mix. Miliotes notes that a five to 10-year old Madeira has rich notes

that offset the caramel, chocolate and nuts in a Snickers, and the saltiness of a Pay Day or dark chocolate with sea salt would pair nicely with a dessertstyle white wine. He adds, “I think salt in the proper amount makes just about any wine taste smoother and richer.”

CLASSIC PAIRINGS

White chocolate + a dessert-style white wine George’s favorite! Beerenauslese, a Selbach Oster style of Reisling, “is a finer pairing in the world with white chocolate.” Dark chocolate (65 to 70 percent cocoa) + a dessert-style red wine George’s favorite! Dr. Parce banyuls. “I like the play between the bitterness of really good dark chocolate and the sweetness of banyuls.” Milk chocolate (45 percent cocoa) + a dry red wine George’s favorite! Taylor Fladgate tawny port. “I think a 20-year old tawny port and milk chocolate goes spectacularly well together.”

Wedding Guide Wedding Bands: As Unique as Your Love Story

A

n engagement ring is a symbol of his love and commitment, while a wedding band is a symbol of a couple’s union. These bands can be as unique as their love story. Since weddings are expensive, you don’t want to make a hasty decision when it comes to your bands. Shopping earlier rather than later will keep you from feeling overwhelmed and will give you an opportunity to work with a jeweler who can help you explore your options. You may be surprised to find that building a custom ring to your exact specifications may be less expensive than you think. Before you commit to a jeweler, shop around and ask about the reputation of the business. A jeweler should feel proud of what you learn and you should feel they are grateful for giving him or her a chance to help you create something so special. About Victoria Jewelers Victoria Jewelers is a family-run business that has been serving Central Florida for 30 years. It has a large selection of alreadymade pieces as well as a staff with the experience, talent and technology to create your perfect band using high-quality diamonds from Forevermark, Gia and more. Additionally, the museum works to enrich the public through special exhibitions, publications and educational programs that celebrate a variety of other artists. The museum’s current rotating exhibit, which opened in late January and runs through May 12, 2019, is called The Unbridled Paintings of Lawrence Lebduska. One of the most popular modern folk-art painters of 1930s America, Lebduska’s work is characterized by dreamlands complete with animals and gardens that invoke feelings of optimism in those viewing each piece of art. “I am delighted to be sharing the wonderful world of Lawrence Lebduska with our audiences,” Shannon Fitzgerald, executive director for Mennello Museum, says. “Especially in a time

of conflict, Lebduska takes us away to magical spaces full of respite and folly, harmony and nature. This exhibition revisits Lebduska’s remarkable place in art history, at a time when ‘self-taught’ was not even considered a term in the art market, and in that way, the artist’s work was radical. How exciting is that?” The Menello Museum is owned and operated by the City of Orlando and provides visitors with diverse experiences through temporary exhibitions featuring various genres of American Art. How to Get Fit for Your Big Day These tips and easy exercises will help you look and feel your best on your wedding day. By Damien Priester, Certified Fitness Coach and Owner, House of Sweat

C

ongratulations! You’re engaged. So what’s next as you look toward your big day? What should be an exciting time can often be one of the most stressful times in your life with the planning, the financial commitments, the merging of two households and so much more. While you want to look your best on your wedding day, the stressors and hectic schedule leading up to it often cause the bride and the groom to ditch their diets and abandon their fitness routines - if they even had one. So I’ve created the “I Do” plan. The first and easiest adjustment to make is to INCORPORATE more water into your daily life. Drinking water keeps your cells nourished and aids in the overall appearance of your skin, hair and nails. In addition, staying super hydrated helps you feel fuller faster to avoid stress eating and superfluous snacking.

Damien Priester is a certified fitness coach and owner of House of Sweat. He works with people of all ages and fitness levels to help them achieve their goals. As a speaker, trainer, instructor and healthy living expert, he has been featured at hundreds of conventions, expos, classes and corporate events.

Step two is to DEDICATE one hour a day to yourself. As a fitness professional, I highly recommend doing something physical with that hour. Meditate, work out or take a walk to get away from the wedding prep stress. The physical activity will not only help keep extra pounds at bay, it may help you lose a few, too. The final step is to OPT for homemade. Meal prep is extremely popular and will keep your healthy eating on track. Since time is spread thin during the wedding preparation period, having a grab-and-go meal alleviates the stress of cooking dinner and frees up time for wedding-related activities. If you don’t love the idea of meal prep, embrace the idea of taking 15 minutes to plan one week’s worth of dinners and a shopping list. Streamlining the process will save valuable time. As a trainer, brides and grooms often ask me to help them lose weight, get toned or even bulk up for their upcoming nuptials. I love helping happy couples look and feel their best, but I encourage them to put in the work at least 30 days before their wedding. You don’t want to limp down the aisle or be too sore to enjoy dancing at your own reception. Start early — six months or more prior to your wedding — and be realistic in what you can accomplish.

Wedding Workout Exercises For All Fitness Levels Warm up with jumping jacks: How many can you do in 2 minutes? Squats to tone the tushy: Two sets of 25. Want to take it to the next level? Add a weight. Lunges: Two sets of 30. These are good for your rear and legs. Take your lunge down as far as you can to the floor. Plank Plus: Two sets of 20. These are great for abs and stomach. Start in standard plank position and touch your right knee to the floor then bring it back up. Tap your left knee to the floor, then bring it up. Repeat. Criss Cross Crunch: Two sets of 25. Instead of doing a standard crunch, touch your right elbow to your left knee. Then touch your left elbow to your right knee. Repeat. Cool down with a 10-minute walk.

5 Ways

to Reduce Dust Mites in Your Home This is one way to take control of your allergies. By Dr. Aishah Ali, MD, UCF Health

D

ust mites are microscopic insects that live in millions of homes across the country. Although they don’t bite or transmit diseases, they’re a major culprit for allergies and cause symptoms such as sneezing, itchy and watery eyes, cough and nasal congestion if you’re allergic to them. Dust mites are too small to see with the naked eye and feed on the microscopic flakes of human skin that we naturally shed. They thrive in warm, humid weather, so Florida is a prime breeding ground for these insects. They usually live in bedding, mattresses, upholstered furniture and carpets and are a major component of household dust. While getting rid of them is nearly impossible, there are ways to limit their prevalence in your home. ut dust mite-proof covers 1. times these are labeled as “hypoallergenic” covers. It’s important to get the kind that have a zipper and that completely encase the item. Covering your bedding will protect dust mites from establishing themselves in your bedding material and can limit your exposure. You can put your washable mattress pad and sheets on top of these covers. 2. Avoid bedding stuffed with foam rubber or kapok Dust mites love to burrow into fluffy materials, so avoid buying foam rubber mattress toppers or kapok pillows and mattress pads. The porous material makes it easy for the tiny critters to crawl into small crevices deep in the bedding. 3. Limit the number of stuffed toys and decorative pillows in your bedroom If you or your child has stuffed toys in or around your bed, it’s best to store them somewhere else while you sleep, like in plastic storage bins or in your closet. Dust mites can burrow in the soft material. If your child must sleep with a favorite stuffed toy, wash it weekly to avoid a buildup of dust mites. 4. Wash your sheets in hot water once a week Washing your sheets in hot water (130F or higher) can reduce exposure to dust mite allergens. Make sure to wash

your sheets weekly. Your sheets have one of the highest concentrations of shed skin particles, making it a big attraction to dust mites. Weekly washing of your sheets can decrease the dust mite residue. Do not hand wash in hot water, as this would be a burn risk. 5. Vacuum and dust regularly Dust mites are not a sign of a dirty home. However, regular vacuuming and dusting can remove the allergen particles that they leave behind. You should vacuum in areas that accumulate dust, like under beds and sofas. Also, use a vacuum that has a HEPA filter to reduce allergens that get airborne when vacuuming. If you think you may be allergic to dust mites or other allergens in your home, speak with an allergy specialist about getting tested.

Is Being a Bridesmaid Right for Me? When to say no to being part of a loved one’s bridal party and how you can show your support in other ways. By Olivia Sain, Staying Sain

W

e all come to that point in our life when our friends are getting married. It seems once one gets engaged, we find ourselves on a merry-go-round of wedding festivities that never end. You can start racking up the expenses and watch your savings account deplete before the wedding has even begun. Although it’s the happiest moment for the married couple to be, it’s not always the same for the circle of friends and family around them. Depending on your current situation - if you suffer from depression, anxiety or have experienced loss — participating in the wedding at its full extent may not be the best choice for your mental health. Are you concerned that being part of the bridal party may not be the

best thing for you to commit to at this time? Ask yourself these questions: Is it feasible financially and geo• graphically? • Have I started a new job? Will taking time off cause unnecessary stress? Have I outgrown this friendship? • Can I still relate to this person? Are we both in different places? Has the relationship changed? • Will this stir up emotions and memories of what could have been with a lost loved one? • Will I grieve over the father-daughter dance that I will never have? • Am I a caregiver and unable to leave my loved one? These are moments that are meant to be celebrated, but they can easily trigger someone who has experienced loss or someone who is going through an illness. You have to put your own health and mental wellbeing first. It’s OK to decline a bridal party invitation if you think participating will make you upset or anxious. Remember, you don’t have to give in to what you think people expect you to do, and you shouldn’t allow others to

guilt trip you into saying yes. A true friend will understand your reason for declining. Don’t feel selfish for saying no when, in your heart of hearts, you know you may not make it through the wedding. It wouldn’t be fair to the married couple to be, and it wouldn’t be fair to you. Instead, let your friend know that you want to support her in other ways, even if you are unable to attend, including: • Helping with RSVPs and making calls. • Offering to address invitations and make place cards or seating assignments. • Putting together a memory book for the bride and groom that features family members or the journey that brought the couple to this day. • Offering transportation for out of town guests, family or even gifts. Finally, loaning them something • meaningful on their wedding day: a family pin, piece of jewelry or something borrowed that has sentimental value. Get creative! There are plenty of ways for you to still be there in spirit.

Look as Radiant as You Feel on Your Wedding Day

EXPERT+ADVICE+BEAUTY<

These tips and easy exercises will help you look and feel your best on your wedding day. By Michael Steppie, MD, Associates in Dermatology

Y

our wedding day is as special as you are. Your inner beauty and radiant glow will shine through, but it’s understandable to feel as though you need a little boost to visibly improve your skin’s appearance for a picture-perfect look. And doesn’t your mom, who has been there for you every step of the way in life, deserve to look her very best, too? Based on your age and specific concerns, there are many procedures to help you reach your beauty goals, including Botox or Juvederm dermal fillers and laser skin resurfacing or even medicalstrength chemical peels. Dermal fillers such as Vollure are highly effective for softening marionette

lines and the thin lines around the lips that so quickly betray a woman’s age. Others like Voluma are designed to restore volume and plump the sagging skin that forms in the chin area. In other cases, medical-strength TCA chemical peels or laser treatments can help visibly minimize the appearance of pores and leave you with smoother, evenly-toned skin. Botox is also an effective solution for minimizing the appearance of the vertical lines that form between your eyebrows after years of frowning and squinting and that make you look older (and angrier) than you truly are. It’s also ideal for smoothing crow’s feet that form when you smile.

Although you have millions of other things to do during the planning stages, don’t wait until the last week or even month before your wedding to consider what options would be best for you to virtually erase years of your life. Remember that Botox and fillers can potentially lead to minor bruising in the injected areas, and medical-strength chemical peels and lasers require some downtime. So schedule a consultation for a customized treatment plan and at-home skincare regiment no later than two months prior to your wedding day so you can glow with a youthful spark that everyone will notice.

STROKE Gets the facts about stroke and how you can prevent one from happening to you.

By Lauren Margolis

A

stroke can happen out of nowhere. You could wake up one morning with sudden weakness, numbness or loss of sensation on one side of your body. You may experience loss of vision, slurred speech, an intense headache and loss of consciousness. These are the symptoms of a stroke, which is the No. 5 cause of death and a leading cause of disability in the U.S., according to the American Stroke Association. As we age, the risk for stroke increases. The chance of having a stroke just about doubles every 10 years after age 55, says Dr. Ankur Garg, a neurologist at Orlando Neurosurgery. However, they can occur in younger individuals as well. When a Stroke Strikes In 2004, at just 39 years old, Secily Wilson, a former News 6 WKMG anchor and double stroke survivor, had her first stroke. While on air for the 5:30 a.m. broadcast, Wilson began slurring her words. “It was lights, camera, but no action,” she remembers.

42

Central Florida Lifestyle | February 2019

Wilson left the news desk and pulled up a previous story she did on the early warning signs of a stroke. It was in that moment that she realized her symptoms matched. She was in such a panic that she got in her car and drove herself to the hospital, something that Dr. Garg does not recommend. He says if you’re experiencing any symptoms, the best action to take is to call 9-1-1 immediately. Recovering from a stroke takes patience and persistence. Wilson was determined to gain back her broadcasting voice following her stroke. “When something like this happens, you have two choices,” she says. “You can either let it consume you or you can fight back.” After about a month, Wilson finally regained her speech. The only after-effect of both strokes has been short-term memory loss, but not every stroke survivor is as lucky. “Stroke means death of brain cells, which is always permanent,” Dr. Garg says, noting that it can often lead to long-lasting or permanent disability. Stroke may cause permanent paralysis or weakness of the arms and legs. It can leave a person wheelchair bound

or in need of a cane. Difficulty swallowing is also common, often leading to the need for a special diet. What Can You Do? Changing your lifestyle can decrease your risk for stroke. People who recreationally use drugs, smoke, have poor dietary habits or are obese are at a much higher risk of stroke. “A healthy diet and regular exercise are the first line of defense against stroke as well as heart attack and multiple other medical problems,” Dr. Garg says. If you’re new to exercising, he recommends taking it easy at first. Brisk walking for 30 minutes at least three times a week is a good place to start then you can increase your exercising gradually with time. Dr. Garg also says the Mediterranean diet, which is heavy in fruits, vegetables, fish and nuts, has been specifically shown to decrease the risk of stroke. Wilson says she has always lived a healthy lifestyle, but she became more aware of the amount of exercise in her routine and the food she eats after her stroke. Even though she maintained healthy habits, her second stroke happened 10 years after the first one.

Stroke vs. Heart Attack Many people think that strokes and heart attacks are the same because they’re usually under the same category. They do have some similarities, such as having to do with a loss or a lack of blood flow. In a stroke, brain cells are dying because of loss of blood flow to a part of the brain, while heart attacks happen due to lack of blood flow to a part of the heart. Heart attacks and strokes happen most commonly because of artery blockages, but they have different symptoms. “While heart attack manifests commonly as sudden, intense chest pain or pain in the left shoulder and shortness of breath, stroke manifests as neurological symptoms,” Dr. Garg says. Having a heart attack or stroke can be a setback in your life, but Wilson says to not let it consume you. Her advice for stroke survivors

PHOTOS COURTESY OF SECILY WILSON

Wilson woke up one morning and noticed her face was slanted. Like the first time, she couldn’t speak. At the hospital, doctors determined she had another stroke. They later found that Wilson has a small hole in her heart. The blood was not able to pass through the hole, so it was clotting. Today, Wilson is on blood thinners and cholesterol medicine, and she has not had another stroke since. Therefore, it isn’t just lifestyle that can affect your chance of having a stroke. While lifestyle is a great place to start when assessing risk, Dr. Garg says there are multiple factors at play, including prior stroke, diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure and family history. One factor that you can’t control is genetics. According to ASA, African American and Hispanic individuals have a much higher risk for stroke, and more women than men have strokes each year. This can be related to pregnancy, history of preeclampsia/eclampsia, oral contraceptive use and postmenopausal hormone therapies.

How to Identify a Stroke F.A.S.T. Face Drooping: Does one side of the face droop or is it numb? Ask the person to smile. Secily Wilson is a former News 6 WKMG anchor and double stroke survivor.

or anyone struggling with a medical condition is to do whatever you can to get back up. Choosing to stay positive can make a big difference. “Do whatever you can to live as normal of a life as you can and not just accept what has happened to you,” Wilson says. She also says to listen to your instincts. If something doesn’t feel right, go to the hospital immediately. Don’t waste time because time loss is brain loss. It’s important to have regular doctor visits and to stay on top of your health. It could end up saving your life.

Arm Weakness: Is one arm weak or numb? Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward? Speech Difficulty: Is speech slurred, are they unable to speak, or are they hard to understand? Ask the person to repeat a simple sentence like, “Is the sky blue?” Is the sentence repeated correctly? Time to call 9-1-1: If the person shows any of these symptoms, even if the symptoms go away, call 9-1-1 and get them to the hospital immediately. Source: American Stroke Association

orget the formal wear. There's a new fundraiser in town. The Hope for More Foundation (H4MF) welcomes attendees to "come as they are" to its signature event, the Anti-Gala, to support the amazing work of local nonprofits in the community. Jessica Kendrick, Esq., and Sarah Geltz, Esq., of the Kendrick Law Group founded H4MF in 2017 to bridge the gap in support of Central Florida's homegrown nonprofit organizations. Along with board members, Audra Wilks of Kelly Price and Associates and Marisa Bryan and Suzanne Reams of Edward Jones Financial in Winter Park, the women strive to identify and fund local nonprofits to further their efforts in outreach, advocacy and fundraising. The founding members developed a specific focus for the H4MF outreach that leans toward helping some of our most vulnerable neighbors. They consciously look to work with organizations that improve health and quality of life for sick, ailing or disabled children; improve access to resources for advocates and survivors of domestic violence; benefit and support veterans and their families; and stabilize, support and provide opportunities for underprivileged children. So what exactly is an anti-gala? It's all of your favorite people — new friends and old — coming together in an inspiring venue to eat, dance and have a night of fun for a cause that means so much to so many people.

“An anti-gala is a ‘come as you are’ event," H4MF Treasurer Jessica Kendrick explains. "No tuxes. No gowns. Just a night of fun for a great cause. We chose to do an Anti-Gala to set ourselves apart from the already perfected formal gala scene.” All proceeds from the Anti-Gala event will be donated to Embrace Families (formerly Community Based Care of Central Florida), a nonprofit that provides adoption, fostering and diversion services to Central Florida youth. It serves more than 3,000 children each day through programs like a first-of-its kind Managed Medicaid program, Kinship Support programs, Youth Services programs and much more. Additionally, its Keys to Independence program has helped over 400 foster children obtain driver's licenses and, through a partnership with IberiaBank, establish funds to help them secure vehicle loans. “We chose Embrace Families as our beneficiary because we wanted to give to a local nonprofit that serves those most in need in our community and to support their incredible message of hope," H4MF President Sarah Geltz says. H4MF's Inaugural Anti-Gala event, presented by Kendrick Law Group, Lexus of Orlando and Lexus of Winter Park, will be held at the new Lexus of Orlando location on March 2, 2019. Tickets can be purchased in advance only and are expected to sell out. For more information, visit www.HopeForMoreFoundation.org.

CREATE YOUR OWN

DECOR When you’re planning a bridal shower, bachelorette party or a celebration of any kind, consider building this balloon arch as a fun decoration. By Catie Moore and Lyndsay Fogarty

46

Central Florida Lifestyle | February 2019

Step 1: Inflate the Balloons

Make sure to blow up the balloons in varying sizes. The sizing doesn’t need to be perfect or exact in any way, but having very large, large, medium, small and mini options on hand will add texture to the final product. Helium isn’t necessary for this step, but a balloon pump is recommended.

Step 2: Compose the Arch

Cut a balloon arch decorating strip to your desired length based on the area that you will be placing the arch. Pull the balloon knots through the holes on the strip, alternating sides and varying the different sizes of balloons as you go. There is no right or wrong way to place the balloons, so be creative! Reserve half of the mini balloons for step four.

Step 3: Find the Right Spot

The balloon arch will brighten any area of your party, whether it’s draped along a wall to highlight a gift table or buffet, hung from the ceiling to act as a backdrop for a photo station, or arranged across a gazebo or other walkway into the event. Secure the arch to your ideal location using heavyduty tape, nails or command hooks.

Step 4: Add the Final Touches

Once your arch is hung, use glue dots to secure the mini balloons to the larger balloons to make it look more full. These mini balloons can be placed as you see fit, wherever you see a hole to fill. Tip! This arch can be completed in about an hour from start to finish, making it easy to do on party day. However, the balloons will stay intact even if you make it 24 to 48 hours in advance.

One Heart on Fire raised funds support local individuals in need within the Central Florida community.

By Lauren Margolis

S

tephanie Bowman’s nonprofit organization, One Heart for Women and Children, has grown tremendously since its humble start, and so have its fundraising events. On Jan. 11, the organization hosted its biggest fundraiser yet: One Heart on Fire, a golf tournament held at Falcon’s Fire Golf Club. One Heart’s first-ever golf tournament exceeded the organization’s goal of $20,000, raising $27,000 to help fulfill its mission of providing vital resources to families within the community that are dealing with major hardships. The event had 88 golfers, 17 volunteers, 60 silent auction items and 14 raffle items, with some of the biggest prizes being a Mercedes and a trip to Mexico. “Everybody not only showed up, but they showed up big,” Bowman says. She went into the event with no expectations and came out of it realizing that it was a big hit. The tournament was so successful that Bowman is already planning another one for July. The money raised during January’s tournament will be used to purchase

food for local families in need. Bowman says that every dollar raised can equal six meals for families. She will also be putting proceeds toward purchasing the curriculum needed for parenting classes that she will be teaching. Twenty years ago, Bowman’s whole life turned around after she struggled with drugs, alcohol and homelessness. On Jan. 7, 1999, she entered drug and alcohol treatment ,and she was no longer homeless. This eye-opening experience gave her a new perspective on life, and it also opened the door, allowing her to help thousands of people. While things were looking up for Bowman, it made her think about others in the community who were struggling with similar issues. She began volunteering, and after 10 years of doing more than 10,000 hours of community service, she decided to start a nonprofit organization called it One Heart for Women and Children. “I didn’t know what it was going to look like, but I knew that I wanted to help other people,” Bowman says.

Little did she know just how big of a difference she was going to make in the community. When the organization was first starting out, Bowman made and delivered peanut butter and jelly sandwiches to homeless individuals. Today, she has developed partnerships with companies like Trader Joe’s and Lucky’s Market to provide fresh produce for families, helping more than 3,000 people each month. As One Heart continues to grow, Bowman will continue to host exciting events that raise funds and awareness in support of making the Central Florida community a better place.

Country Thunder Comes to Town New this year, Country Thunder will coincide with the rodeo on March 22-24, 2019. Here’s the lineup:

for a Rodeo Weekend What to expect at the RAM National Circuit Finals Rodeo and Country Thunder when they come to town next month. By Lyndsay Fogarty

C

owboys are as much a part of Osceola County’s rich history as theme parks and orange groves. The cowboys who herded cattle through the area’s open ranges in the 1800s led the way to the creation of the Silver Spurs Rodeo in the 1940s. Now, the Silver Spurs Rodeo is one of the county’s premier events, and cowboys and cowgirls continue to be drawn to the year after year. Next month, one of the largest rodeos in the United States is coming to town. From March 21 to March 24, the RAM National Circuit Finals Rodeo will be held at Osceola Heritage Park in conjunction with the Country Thunder music festival. The rodeo, which is sanctioned by the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association, will feature champion cowboys and cowgirls from all 12 U.S. circuits, as well as circuits in Canada and Mexico, competing for $1 million in cash and prizes.

50

Central Florida Lifestyle | February 2019

“Rodeo is a way of life in Osceola County,” Osceola Commission Chairman Fred Hawkins, who is a former cowboy himself, says of the event. “It’s our heritage. “To build on that and to bring the second largest rodeo in the PRCA — it’s just phenomenal to have it right here in our backyard.” This family-friendly event not only invites attendees to watch all of the rodeo action inside the arena, but there are also opportunities to meet the cowboys and cowgirls in the fan zone and to camp on property throughout the event. Additionally, since the fan base for rodeos and country music go hand in hand, organizers combined this year’s event with Country Thunder, a three-day music festival featuring the biggest names in country music. So attendees can expect nonstop entertainment all weekend long. “The pairing of Country Thunder Florida and the RAM National Circuit Rodeo maximizes the value for fans and promises a new level of entertainment

for everyone,” Hawkins says. “This is yet another step in making Osceola County a destination for a great country music and rodeo experience.” Individual tickets for the RAM National Circuit Rodeo are available or attendees can opt for the four-day, five-show series ticket that covers the entire weekend. For those interested in Country Thunder, single-day admission and weekend passes are available for purchase.

47 Years Strong

on Promoting West Orange County The West Orange Chamber of Commerce is an advocate for the local business community, facilitating opportunity for all members. By Stina D’Uva

B

ack in 2010, the West Orange Chamber developed a twoword purpose statement to best describe what we do and have been doing for decades: “facilitating opportunity.” What does that really mean? Turns out, it means something different for almost every member, yet we can categorize the opportunities into three groups, two of which have direct benefit for our members and the last provides benefit for the greater good of our community. The most basic is providing relationship building opportunities that connect our members to do business with one another. Another is making sure our members have the opportunities to learn ways to better themselves,

52

Central Florida Lifestyle | February 2019

their employees and their companies. The last, perhaps the most important, is the chamber as the voice of business. We understand that our members are spending their days running their businesses, taking care of their customers and they simply don’t have the time to keep an eye out for threats or even opportunities for their businesses. That’s what the chamber does best. We watch out for our business community while businesses are doing business. The chamber has worked for decades to make positive changes in our communities - changes for the better on transportation, environment, quality of life, workforce and more. Years ago, before SR 429 was even built, the chamber worked to locate a major interchange at the intersection with SR 50. This interchange now puts West Orange County in a perfect location on a main arterial road that is a bypass for I-4. The chamber also worked to speed up the widening of SR 50, making this eastwest corridor highly sought after as a place to locate a business.

In addition to these road projects in the center of our region, we have also been involved in the Sand Lake Road Study to better traffic flow and design in our southwest region. This will be a year focusing on connector roads from the 429 to SR 27 in Lake County — roads that are needed to enhance economic development in Horizon West. It’s not just about roads either. The chamber’s leadership helped form an organization called the Friends of Lake Apopka. Their efforts have revitalized the lake so that it is now an international attraction for bird enthusiasts. These enthusiasts bring dollars to our communities that inspire the creation of new businesses, which in turn create new jobs and revenue. This is economic development at its best. I haven’t even touched the surface of all this chamber is asked to be involved in by regional agencies like MetroPlan, CFX, East Central Florida Planning Agency, Orange County, OCPS and others. We are proud to give input, be a voice for our businesses and work together for the greater good of our community.

CFHLA Cares Each year, the CFHLA Cares Collection Drive supports homeless students in the Central Florida area (Orange and Osceola counties) with a holiday-themed collection drive. In 2018, this holiday sneaker drive, held in conjunction with the 2018 CFHLA Hospitality Gala at Omni Orlando Resort at ChampionsGate collected 940 NEW pairs of shoes.

This collection drive was initiated in 2013 when CFHLA was made aware, by the school districts, of the need for new shoes for the over 10,000 homeless students in Central Florida. CFHLA would like to thank the membership and gala attendees for their support of this collection drive.
