LEAP YEAR! This is a perfect name for 2020 as we leap forward in the personal and professional goals we set forth almost two months ago. I chuckle at the thought of years that don’t have 29 days in the month of February being called “common years.” We at Central Florida Lifestyle embrace the fact that this is not a “common year” and will strive to continue to bring you the most interesting content directly to your mailbox and online, day in and day out. In this issue, we once again highlight places to stay in your own backyard, how to keep that BIG HEART healthy and the people and organizations that make a difference for our neighbors in need. Thank you, Shepherd’s Hope, for keeping your heart and hands open to those in our community. We hope you enjoy all that this issue has to offer. There’s so much to cover when you’re planning for your big day. Don’t forget to make your beauty treatments part of your plan! Aneta K. Filardo, owner of Winter Park Laser & Anti-Aging Center, shares her recommendations for an effective treatment timeline.

Make Your Big Day

Beautiful

How Winter Park Laser & Anti-Aging Center is helping women and men put their best face forward for their milestone moments.

F

ifteen years ago, Aneta Filardo visited a laser hair removal center in Florida and saw what amazing results could be achieved. She then realized there weren’t many medical spas in the Orlando area offering advanced treatments for hair removal, so she inquired about whether there were other laser technologies that existed. After a decade of fighting with her own acne-prone skin with no results from medication and over-thecounter products, Filardo was now on a mission to find the most effective ways to treat skin in the shortest amount of time. She took a leap of faith: sold her investment property, renovated an old building and opened Winter Park Laser & Anti-Aging Center. Now, her facility offers the best noninvasive treatments with the help of advanced technology, providers and education. A variety of treatments are available for brides to be as they prepare for their big day. BBL can help remove brown and red pigmentation to enhance the natural skin tone. If wrinkles are a con-

cern, a sprinkle of Botox is a quick fix. Sculpsure and Velashape III can help you slim down faster. And the whole bridal party can benefit from the Diamond Glow Facial, which exfoliates and hydrates the skin with no downtime. A provider works with you to customize a plan for your specific goals, timeline and budget. As experts in the field, they will guide you through the process, sharing which treatments need to be completed before others and how much down time you need to allow for between treatments. “I can’t stress enough how vital it is to integrate your beauty routine into your wedding plans,” Filardo says. “It’s important for us to get familiar with your skin so there are no surprises leading up to the wedding.” Winter Park Laser & Anti-Aging Center has been recognized by Talk of the Town with the title of “Best Customer Service” for the past 10 years, and the practice is part of the top 500 as a Diamond Member with Allergan. They provide only the best to help you look your best.

1 year before: Consider getting a head start on laser hair removal or getting conditions such as acne, melasma and hyperpigmentation under control. 6 months before: Consider starting chemical peels, facials and laser treatments such as BBL and microneedling treatments. 3 months before: If you’re considering injectables, such as Botox and fillers, this is the time to start! This is especially true if you’re new to injectables. 1 month before: Make sure you’re consistently using your holy grail, which consists of: Growth Factor, Brightening, Hydration and SPF. 1 week before: Consider the ultimate facial, such as Diamond Glow Facial, and an added light peel for that extra glow on your big day.

UNVEILED

By Lyndsay Fogarty

All About That Lace

This trend has been around for years, but in 2020, lace becomes more than just a wedding day accent. You will see it on corsets, along flowing trains, highlighting sleeves and necklines, and so much more. Prominent placement for lace is one of the top wedding dress trends of the year. 10

Central Florida Lifestyle | February 2020

Make a Statement with Sleeves FLK 817 dress with butterfly sleeves that accent a V neckline and low-V design on the back. Daalarna Folk Collection F/W 2020

Sleeves take on a whole new look this year. While long, lacy sleeves are still in, designers are channeling the ‘80s by modernizing the puffy sleeve. Both long and short sleeves will be the focal point of many dresses this year, so you can take part in this trend even if you’re getting married in a warmer climate.

Strut Your Suit

All eyes will be on you in this sleek suit, with its flattering silhouette and a jacket that doubles as a train. Berta MILANO Collection S/S 2020

Many modern brides are opting for suits on their big day, whether it’s to walk down the aisle or is part of an outfit change for the reception. Suits are also a smart option for rehearsal dinner attire because they can be dressed up or more casual, depending on the venue. The options are endless.

Wardrobe Trends

for Men

8 Trends to Know for Your Wedding Reception From choosing wedding colors to designing the look of the ceremony and space, bridal trends are ever-evolving. Here’s what you can expect from 2020 weddings.

Navy-colored suits are

becoming just as classic for men’s wedding attire as the traditional black tux. This neutral shade is not only flattering but it’s complementary to a variety of wedding color themes.

1. Color Blocking: This bold use of contrasting or complementary colors will be big for reception decor such as tablescapes, centerpiece florals or even the wedding cake design. To execute this trend, you want to pick colors on the opposite ends of the color wheel or colors that sit directly next to each other. Examples include yellow and blue (opposites) or red and pink (neighbors).

This year, expect to see many grooms making major wedding day statements in patterned suits. Anything goes, from bold checks to subtle florals, for men who aren’t afraid to step outside the box on their big day.

2. Terrariums: Greenery has been popular for the past couple of years, but terrariums offer a new take on this trend. They make beautiful centerpieces that can be customized for each table, and they’re fun for the whole bridal party to make together.

3. Dried Flowers: Integrating dried flowers into a floral arrangement are a great way to add texture. While this is the most popular option, brides who decide to go for fully dried florals don’t have to worry about drying their flowers for keepsakes post-wedding. The work will already be done.

Loyola Veil Grace Loves Lace

A Tale of

Two Veils Modern brides are taking one of two approaches when it comes to the tradition of wearing a veil. They’re either going all out with a bold, head-to-toe look or ditching it completely for other accessories. This includes barrettes and combs studded with jewels, scarves or hair buns, and tiaras or headbands. Any of these accessories can be integrated into the trend of wearing your hair in an effortless fashion, such as in a messy ponytail or a loose, textured updo. Silk Hair Bun Grace Loves Lace

12

Central Florida Lifestyle | February 2020

4. Rattan: Go for a vintage look with textured rattan accents, such as lanterns, baskets or furniture scattered throughout your reception venue. It’s a perfectly pretty option for outdoor weddings or themes that call for a throwback feel.

5: Neo-mint: The color of the year for weddings is looking to be a pretty pastel shade of green called neomint. From bridesmaid dresses to floral arrangements, you will be seeing this soft, romantic hue particularly in spring weddings, though it is appropriate year-round.

6. Grazing Tables: The grazing table has become a staple at gatherings that call for snacking. You may have even seen one at a bridal shower or welcome brunch throughout the wedding process. Reception grazing tables can hold anything from a cheese and charcuterie spread to desserts that accent the cake.

7. Self-Serve Bars: While you may not want to get rid of bartenders completely, having a separate setup with beer and/or wine taps provide an interactive element and free up the bartenders for more complicated drink requests. Guests can serve themselves without any fuss.

8. Sustainable Weddings: Brides and grooms have become more mindful of the environment and strive to integrate eco-friendly elements into their wedding day. It can be as simple as choosing a caterer who thoughtfully sources ingredients or as out there as growing your own flowers for bouquets and decor.

4 Decades

of the Arnold Palmer Invitational “Your hometown is not where you’re from, it’s who you are.” – Arnold Palmer By Shannon Hampton

O

ne of the most historic stops on the National PGA Tour is right here in Central Florida – a place that legendary golfer Arnold Palmer called home. The Arnold Palmer Invitational is loved by the nation and is played yearly in our own backyard at the Bay Hill Club & Lodge. Since 1979, golfers from all over the country have come to play in this famous contest organized by the Professional Golfers’ Association of America. Originally called the Bay Hill Invitational, the tournament name was changed to honor Palmer in 2007. With the Arnold Palmer Invitational coming to town next month, we take a look back though the history of this treasured Central Florida event.

The ‘80s

The first decade of the tournament produced many prestigious names in golf. The first victor was Bob Byman, and it was his first and only win at the Arnold Palmer Invitational. Winners like Lakeland’s Andy Bean, Fuzzy Zoeller and Paul Azinger followed and continued to

14

Central Florida Lifestyle | February 2020

raise the tournament’s prestige to what it is today. The course design was revamped, which modified the par from 71 to 72.

The ‘90s

The 1990 PGA Tour rookie of the year, Robert Gamez, gained the title with an eagle at the 18th hole in the last round of that year’s playoff. After many unrecognized attempts in the invitational, Loren Roberts became one of the most memorable players of the 1990s. He set a tournament record with two back-to-back wins in 1994 and 1995.

2000s

The early 2000s has one overall theme: Tiger Woods. The young newcomer made a name for himself when he won for the fourth straight year in 2003. He then claimed backto-back first place titles in 2008 and 2009. Woods has the second most PGA Tour wins with 79, trailing the late Sam Snead (82), and holds the title for most career earnings of any golfer in PGA Tour history.

The 2010s

Tiger Woods’ records continued to spill into this era with two more wins in 2012 and 2013, giving him a historic eight wins at the Arnold Palmer Invitational. This decade also gave way to some international winners, including South African native Ernie Elis in 2010 and Australian victor Marc Leishman in 2017. What will this new decade bring for the Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard? We’ll have to see when the first tournament of the 2020s takes place from Monday, March 2, to Sunday, March 8. The 2020 competition will kick off with Arnie’s March Against Children’s Cancer on March 3, and the week will include a variety of special events in addition to worldrenowned golf.

Shepherd’s Hope relies on strong partnerships within the local community to ensure its services reach those most in need.

Shepherd’s Hope: Caring People, Caring For People It Started With a Walk on the Beach.

In the summer of 1996, Dr. William S. Barnes, pastor of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church in Windermere, had a calling. That calling led him to create Shepherd’s Hope, a facility operated primarily by volunteers, that provides uninsured individuals and families access to healthcare. Patients who are eligible for services through Shepherd’s Hope have income at or below 200% of the poverty level, are uninsured and are not eligible for governmentassisted health care programs. Today, Shepherd’s Hope operates five medical health centers in Orange and Seminole counties.

“None of us knows how to do all of it, but all of us know how to do some of it.” - Dr. William S. Barnes, Founder of Shepherd’s Hope

16

Central Florida Lifestyle | February 2020

Through the Support of a Caring Community.

Shepherd’s Hope relies on strong partnerships within the local community to ensure its services reach those most in need. Each Health Center is the result of a partnership between a faith community, school or facility partner, specialty providers and hospitals. Volunteer physicians, nurses, other licensed health care professionals and general volunteers provide quality healthcare to men, women and children who would otherwise go without the care they need.

Expanding Its Reach with New Initiatives.

In celebration of its 23rd anniversary this month, Shepherd’s Hope launched three new initiatives that will expand access to healthcare services in our community. The new Shepherd’s Hope Health Center in Winter Garden now features an on-site radiology suite with a full range of services, including a diagnostic lab and x-ray services, for uninsured patients. Additionally, a $600,000 grant from the West Orange Health

Alliance will support the assimilation of the acute care dental services of the West Orange Dental Alliance into Shepherd’s Hope operations. The funds from WOHA will help to establish this new line of services and support access to care. Finally, to promote positive lifestyle changes for residents, a program called HEAL - Healthy Eating Active Lifestyle was launched in the community. It provides residents with access to food as a prescription; heart, diabetes and obesity interventions; and educational cooking, nutrition and lifestyle classes and programs.

Join Shepherd’s Hope in their Mission.

Whether you’re a medical professional interested in donating your services, a community member wishing to volunteer at a facility or an event, or a resident who would like to support this amazing mission with a monetary gift, Shepherd’s Hope needs your help. New volunteers are always welcome, specifically prescribers and specialists that receive Sovereign immunity, as well as general volunteers. In-kind donation

needs include everything from tri-fold paper towels, non-latex gloves and wrist splints to water and snacks for patients who wait hours in line before the doors even open. Monetary support of patient care ($100 per patient) is also a huge need. For more information about opportunities to get involved and a full in-kind wish list, visit the Shepherd’s Hope website.

How Do I Convince My Parents to Create an

Estate Plan?

How to start a dialogue with elderly family members about the importance of estate planning for their family’s future.

Q:

Although my husband and I understand the need of having our own estate plan, I can’t convince my parents, who are in their 70s, of its importance. I offered to pay for their estate planning, but they just don’t want to discuss it. Is it common for the elderly to avoid estate planning? What can I do to encourage their interest?

By Kristen M. Jackson, Jackson Law P.A.

A:

It’s common for people to use all type of excuses to avoid planning their estate with a last will, trust or living documents. Some reasons they give are:

• I’ve been healthy all my life and will think about estate planning when my spouse dies. • I just want to live and not think about the end of my life. • It seems to be an unnecessary financial burden and I don’t want to talk about it. • Our estate is too small. It seems a bit frivolous to toss away our hardearned money on attorneys to prepare a pile of paper to store for our children to read when we die. • It’s enough to have each other for managing our lives. Kristen M. Jackson is the founding partner of Jackson Law PA (407-363-9020). She is experienced in estate planning, real estate law, business and contract law. Her firm has earned an AV rating by MartindaleHubbell signifying the highest level of professional excellence as obtained through opinions from members of the bar and judiciary.

18

Central Florida Lifestyle | February 2020

Estate planning attorneys hear these excuses every day. Unfortunately, it often takes a tragedy to make people aware that they should have acted sooner and now must face greater cost than they imagined to protect themselves, their estate and beneficiaries. You might begin by taking small steps with your parents by discussing the need for living documents. These are some of the most misunderstood estate planning documents and often become relevant only when tragedy strikes. Consider the following: Simply being married doesn’t • mean that one spouse can make health care decisions for the other who was admitted to the hospital unconscious. • A spouse cannot make financial decisions for another who becomes incapacitated if they own assets such as business, bank or investment accounts individually and fail to include the other jointly on accounts so the spouse can manage those assets. • If one spouse becomes mentally incapacitated due to injury or

dementia and lacks adequate living documents that name someone to manage their affairs and health, the spouse may need to apply for guardianship, which is usually costly. Such instances can even end up with a state agency becoming guardian and taking over the incapacitated spouse’s assets and health care. Living documents are essential for everyone and cost much less than a sophisticated estate plan. Living documents include a durable power of attorney, designation of health care surrogate, nomination of preneed guardian, and living will. Introducing your parents to these documents will open a dialogue about their entire estate. Rather than exchanging cards, candy, flowers or stuffed animals, encourage a sit-down with your parents on Valentine’s Day to discuss estate documents that are necessary for their daily living. Encourage them to consult with an estate planning attorney, which will inevitably lead to further discussion about your parent’s estate after death.

Spring

Fashion & Beauty Preview From hair and makeup to the hottest styles to wear, this is your guide to all of the top trends of the spring fashion season. By Kelly Gilmore

C

olorful patterns, unique fabrics and throwback styles are walking right off the runway and into your wardrobe this spring. Here are some of the season’s top trends for women and men.

1. Oversized Bags

Big bags are always a win-win because they’re both cute and convenient. An oversized tote or large purse is a staple piece that not only looks good but can hold all your items in a fashionably practical way. While it’s typically suggested to rock a bag in neutral colors such as white, black or tan so it can be worn with any outfit, try stepping outside the box this season. Trade those safe neutral tones for a fun, unexpected shade, such as a celebratory citrus or a purple pastel to add a springtime twist.

2. Rose Prints

Springtime naturally brings floral patterns to the forefront of fashion, representing the blooming flowers of the season. This year, one flower in particular is taking center stage: the rose. We’re not talking tiny prints either. Chunky rose patterns will dress up everything from work blouses to evening wear so this trend can be worn day or night.

22

Central Florida Lifestyle | February 2020

3. White Suits

Crisp and clean, a white tailored suit is a classic outfit choice that portrays confidence and class. Add a bit of glamour to your suit silhouette with a sleek, all-white ensemble or pair it with a colorful shoe or blouse. Either take on this spring trend allows for a balance of professionalism and style.

4. Polka Dot Patterns

Polka dots have been spotted across the fashion landscape this spring, from dresses to blouses and on a variety of fabrics such as satin, wool and cotton. Including patterns in your wardrobe can bring a simple outfit to life, and large polka dots in various color combinations will be a very popular pattern throughout the spring fashion season.

5. Crochet Fabric

This knitted fabric has endless possibilities for style, ranging in color, shape and pattern for nearly any article of clothing. As a texturized statement piece, crochet gives a Bohemian feel to tops, skirts, pants, shorts and dresses, and it’s something you will be seeing a lot of this spring.

6. Colored Leather

Leather is usually considered a winter look (think black leather jackets). However, in 2020, it’s making the transition to spring with vibrant citrus colors like tangerine and lime green in statement pieces. From leather pants and skirts to jackets, this trend adds a fresh pop of color to any outfit.

Spring Trends for Men 1. Pastel Dress Shirts: Spring colors and preppy patterns brighten up this classic piece of men’s attire for the season. This is a trend that will never go out of style. 2. H igh-Waisted Dress Pants: Slacks with a higher waist line are trending for men this season. It’s a flattering fit that gives the illusion of being taller. 3. Seeing Stripes: Whether it’s incorporated into blazers, dress shirts or entire suit sets, stripes are a simple statement pattern that adds style to any business look. 4. P atterned Swim Trunks: Fun fabrics are making a splash this season as men’s swimwear takes on bright pops of color and dynamic patterns.

6 Wedding Traditions that Take the Cake Weddings are full of traditions though some have become modernized or totally reinvented. Let’s see which traditions have brides and grooms saying “I do” or “I don’t.” By Kelly Gilmore

A

s wedding bells ring, rice isn’t the only thing being tossed. Sometimes wedding traditions are written out of the etiquette books, too, while others stand the test of time or become modernized for today’s bride and groom. We’ve outlined some of the top traditions that may or may not be on the guest list for the next wedding you attend.

Throwing Rice - I Don’t!

Tossing a Bouquet - I Do!

Matching Bridesmaid Dresses - I Don’t!

This lucky tradition seems to be here to stay. Proudly carrying a bouquet of flowers down the aisle is symbolic of a traditional bride. During the reception’s bouquet toss, it’s said that the woman who catches it will be the next to be married. This may just be a superstition, but it’s a highlight for most female guests.

White Wedding Dresses - I Do!

White gowns have been worn by brides for centuries. While modernday brides may opt for a variation of cream or blush, or even opt for a more unique color to match their theme, the majority of women still say “yes” to a white wedding dress.

26

Central Florida Lifestyle | February 2020

The age-old tradition of throwing rice as the bride and groom exit hasn’t been completely tossed aside, but it has been reinvented. Rice is banned at most venues because it can harm hungry birds following the wedding. Modern alternatives include bubbles and sparklers.

This is an old tradition that has gotten a new design, much to the delight of bridesmaids. These days, many brides share their wedding color and let their bridesmaids choose a style of dress in that shade that fits their body shape best. This allows the bride to keep unity with the color scheme of her big day while making sure her girls have their own flattering cut.

First Looks - I Do!

The old superstition of not seeing your significant other before the ceremony has made its way out of many modern weddings, as couples are now incorporating first look photo shoots into their wedding day itinerary.

While not everyone wants to give up that first look on the aisle, many have chosen to share this intimate moment together while capturing beautiful photos of each other’s reactions.

Matching Metal Rings - I Don’t!

Wedding bands symbolize the commitment that brides and grooms are making to each other. Many couples go with traditional matching metal bands, but others don’t. Modern bands for women often include diamonds to match their engagement ring, and men’s bands now come in dark metal or even black. Finding a pair of rings that makes both the bride and groom happy can be done with variation while still representing unity.

5 Tips for Motorcyclists During Bike Week Keep this information in mind when you head to Daytona next month to ensure a fun, memorable and safe Bike Week event. By Michael Brehne, Law Offices of Michael B. Brehne, P.A

T

he world’s largest motorcycle event will be taking over Daytona Beach on March 6-15, 2020. Over 500,000 local and out-of-town enthusiasts will enjoy activities such as motorcycle racing, concerts, parties, manufacturer showcases and street festivals. Multiple Central Florida venues will host events and many local Harley-Davidson dealerships put on quite a show. Here are some tips for having a fun and safe Bike Week. Don’t get a ticket. There will be abundant law enforcement officers present in the Daytona Beach area during Bike Week. The city often recruits officers from other jurisdictions to patrol the most congested areas, such as Main Street, Beach Street and U.S. 1. Of course, the I-4 corridor between Kissimmee and St. Augustine will also have police presence. Bikers and motorists must be cognizant of the dramatic increase in motorcycle traffic that will occur and take extra care to avoid accidents. Further, bikers will be subject to higher scrutiny than motorists by the police while driving on the interstate and local roads. Complete preventive maintenance. Before you head out on your motorcycle, program your GPS and flag any stops you want to make. Also, make sure the bike has undergone a thorough safety check and that all maintenance is up to date. Check your tire tread and tire pressure. Make sure your brakes are crisp and responsive. Check the fluid levels and address any fluids that require replacement. Check your lights and make sure your battery is fully charged or replaced.

Check the weather. No matter how good a condition your bike is in, having a plan in place for bad weather is important. Keep raingear on your bike or in your backpack. Have a plan for shelter in the event there is rain that’s too difficult to navigate through. Check traffic reports and consider that rush hour may be extended by a few hours in the morning and evening for bikers coming and going to Daytona. Bring your bike home. Motorcycle thefts are a common occurrence at Bike Week. Task force police officers work undercover to apprehend bike thieves, but preventing the theft is your best defense. Keep your keys with you at all times. If your bike has a front fork lock, use it. Place your helmet, jacket and valuables in your locked saddlebag or locked under the seat. Safety first. Most deadly motorcycle accidents are alcohol-related. Although it’s easy to get swept up into riding to the next venue without a care, leave enough time between drinking and riding so that you don’t feel the effects of alcohol. While it’s not the law for those over 21, consider wearing your helmet whenever you ride. Most accidents during Bike Week occur in high traffic areas and at slower speeds. A helmet can prevent injury or significantly reduce the severity of injury. As my mother would remind me, this is Florida. Use sunscreen when enjoying the scenic rides and festivities.

Mr. Brehne has dedicated his 20-year career to representing injured people in motorcycle and car accidents, and represents people when their insurance claims have been denied. He has earned a reputation as a tenacious and skilled trial lawyer when representing his clients against large corporate defendants and insurance companies. He is also the author of “Watching Out for Florida Motorcyclists: Legal Rights of Injured Bikers.” 34

How to Stay Heart Healthy This American Heart Month, learn about the risks of heart disease and find out how to lead a healthy lifestyle. By Kelly Gilmore

A

ccording to the American Heart Association, almost half of all U.S. citizens ages 18 and older have some form of heart disease due to various factors. That percentage adds up to about 121.5 million adults in the U.S. alone. Though this may seem inevitable by numbers, staying informed on risk factors and taking preventive measures to protect your heart health can decrease your risk for developing cardiovascular disease. Common examples of cardiovascular diseases include coronary artery disease, which contributes highly to heart attack; atrial fibrillation, a heart rhythm that causes blood clots; and mitral valve prolapse, a backflow in the heart that can increase infection risk. Since these diseases are diagnosed every day in the United States, it’s likely that you or someone you know may be affected. However, preventive measures such as daily exercise and maintaining a healthy diet have proven beneficial in decreasing your risk.

36

Central Florida Lifestyle | February 2020

Risk factors include, but are not limited to, high blood pressure, abnormally high or low cholesterol, obesity, excessive blood sugar levels, excessive consumption of alcohol and smoking of tobacco products. It’s important to stay informed about where you stand on these risk factors year-round, but the American Heart Association’s educational initiatives during American Heart Month are a great place to start with improving your heart health. If you think you may be at risk, consider lifestyle changes to get on track. This includes exercise, maintaining a proper diet, refraining from smoking, limiting alcohol consumption and monitoring your blood pressure numbers inside and outside of the doctor’s office. It’s also imperative to schedule routine annual physicals and inform your doctor of any family history relating to heart disease. Working with your doctor and staying informed on not just heart disease statistics, but of your own health numbers, will help you with leading a healthy heart lifestyle.

Five Things You May Not Know About Heart Disease Heart disease is the No. 1 cause of death for both men and women in the United States. Staying educated about the illness and your risk factors could save your life. 1. O ne in every four deaths in the United States are due to heart disease. 2. Nearly half of Americans have at least one of the three main risk factors for heart disease, which includes high blood pressure, high cholesterol and use of tobacco. 3. Avoiding foods high in sodium, saturated fat and trans fat can decrease your chances of developing heart disease. 4. Coronary heart disease is the most common form of heart disease. It affects one in 16 women over the age of 20. 5. Alcohol can contribute to your risk for heart disease. It’s suggested that women only consume one alcoholic beverage per day and that men should limit themselves to two alcoholic beverages per day. Source: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

5 Reasons to Celebrate Your

+ STAYCATION

Special Occasion at a Local Resort

By Kristi Gomen

O

rlando residents tend to shy away from tourist areas. But when you’re planning an event like a bachelor or bachelorette party or a birthday getaway, there’s no better place to celebrate the special occasion. The Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Resort is no exception. We compiled a list of the top five reasons this resort is ideal for your next celebration.

1. Make Yourself at Home

From traditional rooms to a selection of suites, a stay at the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Resort offers a relaxing getaway right in your own backyard. There are even a variety of amenity gifts that can be arranged for the guest of honor, such as welcome

38

champagne and turn-down sweets, to make the occasion extra special.

2. Kick Back and Relax

Treat the guest of honor like a VIP with a half day or full day poolside cabana rental at the Grotto Cabanas or the Swan Cabanas. Rentals include an HDTV, two large floats, a couch, lounge chairs, a lemon-infused water tower and a fruit bowl. Your personal pool server will ensure the mini fridge is stocked with soda and bottled water and will bring you food and beverages from the hotel restaurant at your leisure.

3. T ake Advantage of the Amazing Amenities

Leave the real world behind for a little while with a visit to the Mandara Spa. From rejuvenating facials and body wraps to relaxing massages and mani/ pedis, your party will feel truly pampered. While you’re there, spend time in the Meru Temple or the Tea Garden. As a guest of the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Resort, you will also have access to advanced tee times at three championship Walt Disney World courses: the Magnolia Golf Course, the Palm Golf Course or Lake Buena Vista Golf Course.

4. Play at the Parks

A stay here comes with theme park perks as well. In addition to a water taxi to nearby Epcot and Hollywood Studios, the resort offers complimentary transportation to all Disney parks as well as advance 60-day fast pass reservations. Your proximity to the parks also means that you can do one of the famous monorail crawls (or the brand-new Skyliner crawl) during your celebration weekend.

5. Indulge in a Decadent Dinner

The resort is known for its many splurge-worthy restaurants, including Todd English’s bluezoo, a coastal cuisine concept; Kimonos sushi bar; Trattoria Il Mulino, a contemporary Italian restaurant; and the newly rebranded Shula’s Steak House. With these four signature restaurants, there’s no shortage of fine wine, succulent steaks, fresh seafood and everything in between. As you plan for celebrations throughout the year, keep the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Resort top of mind for a getaway that’s not too far from home.

The Marriage of

Paul and Kristen D’Uva

How the West Orange Chamber of Commerce can help you with planning your big day. By Stina D’Uva, West Orange Chamber of Commerce

E

ach month, as I write these articles, I endeavor to relate it to the theme of the Lifestyle magazine issue. At first, I struggled with tying weddings into an article focused on our chamber. Then it hit me, as our chamber is known for connecting our members with one another for the use of one another’s products and services, I realized that this issue is a wonderful opportunity to extend the same to the readers of Lifestyle. I invite you to utilize our members for your business and personal use, especially for wedding planning, including the rehearsal dinner, honeymoon and more. I even have a personal story to tell about wedding planning. Back in 2015, my son Paul and his girlfriend, Kristen, got engaged while living in Ohio. I was so excited to have my oldest son get married. Then, I found out I was to be the wedding planner and it would be a destination wedding in Orlando. At first, I was overwhelmed. Then as I began making my list with the happy couple, I pulled out my chamber directory and got to work.

A Festive Room, Big Orange Awards 2019

The first thing I was tasked with was finding them a wedding venue. That wasn’t hard at all since our membership includes wonderful venues, ranging from those owned and operated by our West Orange municipalities to privately owned venues to those located at our theme park member hotels. The range of size, locations, types and price ranges are all within our membership. After finding the venue for the wedding, the caterer came next. Once again, not a difficult thing to do since I have lots of experience eating and meeting caterers at chamber events. Then came the task of reserving hotel rooms for the out-of-town guests that would be somewhere in between my house and the wedding venue. Again, the directory helped with selecting two price range hotels. Even the bus transportation for the guests was simply a phone call to a chamber member. Almost every single aspect of the wedding was provided by a chamber member. Even the food for the rehearsal dinner was catered by a chamber member restaurant and the after party was at a local brewery. Photographers, videographers, jewelers, limousines, flowers, gifts for the bridal party, cakes, favors, travel plans and more are all available through chamber businesses. WOCC members will help you make your special day perfect, too. And as they say, here we go again. My son Steven proposed to Samantha. They will get married in New Jersey later this year. We’re all thrilled, but I am out of a job as wedding planner!

Create a POP of Fun! Who wouldn’t love a dressed up bottle of bubbly? There are countless ways to make these pretty party favors match the theme of any occasion. Here’s how to do it. Step 2: Empty the tissue paper strips into a large bowl. If you have regular tissue paper on hand, you can use that, too. Just shred it with a paper shredder.

Step 4: Place the bottle into the bowl of tissue paper strips and apply them by hand where needed, pressing them gently into the bottle so they fully stick.

Step 1: Work with the guest of honor to determine her favorite champagne or sparkling wine, as well as the color scheme of her wedding or her preferred colors for the party you’re hosting, then gather your supplies accordingly. Here, we used mini bottles of bubbly, but this project can be done with full-sized bottles, too.

Create Your Signature

Wedding Cocktail Serving a cocktail that represents your love and relationship is an easy and fun way to put a personalized twist on your big day. By Kelly Gilmore

G

etting started on creating a signature cocktail can be daunting, but the experience can be delightful when you keep the basics in mind. While brainstorming your perfect drink, think about what you and your significant other like to sip on then incorporate your favorites into your cocktail hour. Whether you’re bubbly with champagne or wishing for whiskey, narrowing down the type of liquor you wish to serve is the first step. also offering your guests more options to choose from. Drinks can differ in flavor profile, liquor type or even just color and garnish. The creation or creations you make will be memorable no matter what. Keeping the drink sentimental can make for a cocktail you will always remember — and one that you will enjoy for many years to come. Consider going with the drink you had on your first date or coming up with a new, memorable drink together. Turn the wedding planning task of crafting your cocktail into a fun date night by having a tasting at home, or turn it into a double or triple date by inviting your wedding party, too. Whether your drink is something new or something old, it’s sure to be a craft cocktail you will never forget.

3 TIPS FOR CRAFTING YOUR PERFECT COCKTAIL 1. T he Name Game: Keep the name of your drink short and sweet. Use wedding-themed words like “The Blushing Bride” for pink cocktails or “Tai-ing the Knot ‘’ for a Mai Tai. 2. T hink in Theme: Consider the month, the location or the color scheme of your wedding to develop distinct flavor profiles and elements that can tie in beautifully. Examples of such combinations include bright and fruity champagne cocktails for a summer beach wedding or Whiskey Lemonades for a southern-inspired event. 3. M ake it Easy: The drink you choose could make or break your bar. Prevent long lines by choosing a drink that can be made quickly or prepped ahead of time in batches. Sangria is easy to make in large batches while champagne cocktails are quick to pour.

he Heart of Florida United Way not only raises millions of charitable dollars, but oversees programs that help those who are in need of assistance in the Central Florida community. The focus is on four main areas: education, income, health and basic needs. According to the organization’s website, for every dollar spent on prevention, a minimum of $7 is saved on intervention. That’s why the United Way’s work addresses the root cause of the issues that are affecting our neighbors. Through partnerships and collaborations with other businesses entities and organizations, the United Way oversees various programs that directly benefit those who need them. The following are just some of them. 2-1-1 Information and Referral Helpline: The 2-1-1 service provides information and support in many areas, including financial assistance, health programs, crisis support and more. This service can be accessed by phone (dial 2-1-1), email, chat (on the United Way website) or text (send zip code to 898-211).
