Strengthening Families One Home at a Time Learn how West Orange Habitat for Humanity partners with families in need of safe, decent, affordable homes.
W
est Orange Habitat for Humanity dreams of a world where everyone has a safe, decent, affordable place to live and that begins right here in Central Florida. Since its founding in 1990, the nonprofit housing organization has made it a mission to put “God’s love into action by building homes, communities, and hope.” This is achieved as Habitat partners with families in need of safe, decent, affordable homes in West Orange County, Florida, which includes Oakland, Ocoee, Winter Garden, and Windermere. The most recent affordable housing community, Criswell Court, is in East Winter Garden and will soon be home to four hard-working families who have journeyed through the process of becoming homeowners together. By the time they become homeowners, these four incredible women will each have put in over 200 hours of sweat equity, taken financial literacy classes, and saved for an affordable

down payment on their homes. “I’ve never really been able to have anything that was just mine, something that I earned, something that I owned - and that will be the best feeling for me,” says Habitat Homebuyer Partner Tiffany. “This is a chance for me to have somewhere that is more than just a house where I stay, or a place where I sleep…but is really my home! To be able to say, ‘those are MY keys in the door’ that moment will be life-changing for us.” And with 1 in 6 Florida homeowners paying over half of their monthly income on housing, owning a home is a far cry from reality for many families. Through unique partnerships, Habitat can provide affordable mortgages at 0% interest to qualifying families, making the dream of homeownership possible. “Because Habitat is the mortgage holder, we are able to ensure that our homeowner’s mortgages remain at nointerest and are never more than 30% of their monthly income,” says Nicole
Campbell, Communications Manager, West Orange Habitat. We prepare and equip our homeowners through Homeowner Education Courses and set them up for long-term homeownership success.” So, how can the Central Florida community assist with these efforts? Habitat could use your financial support, your voice, and your time to help more families build strength, stability and self-reliance. Boat Safely This Summer Don’t leave the dock without reviewing these boating safety tips.
By Nicole Paskowsky
A
re you getting the boat ready for a day on the water? If you love fishing, you won’t forget your rods and bait. Water sport enthusiasts will have the wakeboards, tubes and towrope ready. And everyone prioritizes snacks, cold drinks and sunscreen. But the most important thing to remember is boat safety. It’s easy to forget that boating — a carefree and liberating activity — is also inherently dangerous. Before you set off from the dock to crest the ocean waves or motor along a tranquil lake, keep these essential boating safety tips in mind. Don’t Drink and Drive
Sorry to ruin the party but drinking and operating a boat is illegal in all 50 states. Judgment, reaction times and coordination are crucial, and the sun, waves, spray, engine noise and vibrations in marine environments make alcohol even more hazardous on the water than on land. It is the main factor in fatal boating accidents. Passengers are allowed to drink alcohol, but drivers will face hefty fines, license suspension or jail time if caught boating under the influence. You wouldn’t drink and drive a car, so don’t drink and drive a boat.
File a Float Plan
A float plan is a document you leave behind with a friend, family
8
Central Florida Lifestyle | July 2022
member or local marina. It describes your vessel, including the length, make, engine type and horsepower, and lists the number of passengers, their names and contact information, and an emergency contact. It says where you are going with a detailed route and when you plan to depart and return. If you don’t return when expected, time is of the essence to get accurate details about your trip to rescue personnel, so they have the best chance to locate you. Wear a Life Jacket
Life jackets save lives, end of story. A boating accident might leave you unconscious, and even strong swimmers can exhaust quickly. But the puffy, orange life preservers of yesteryear, while guaranteed to keep you afloat, were more likely to make you feel cumbersome and uncomfortable — and ready for any excuse to tear
them off. Luckily, today’s life jackets are sleek, comfortable and stylish, from suspender styles, belt packs and foam vests to kids’ jackets decorated with their favorite characters. But having a life jacket on board isn’t enough. You must wear it. Take a VHF Marine Radio
It’s unlikely that 5G service is available miles from shore. While useful for selfies, your cellphone can lose signal and battery life, making it unreliable in an emergency. Boaters can reach the Coast Guard using a VHF radio tuned to channel 16 anytime, day or night. A VHF radio is also best for keeping up to date on storm and small-craft advisories. The National Weather Service broadcasts marine weather forecasts regularly on channels 1 through 5.

+ YOUASKED We Answered
Pet Trust
Do what’s best for your pet by including Pet Trust provisions in your trust for them once you depart this world.
By Kristen Jackson, Jackson Law P.A.
Q: A:
Aren’t animals just property and can’t I simply discard them? As sole beneficiary and successor trustee, executor, to my mother’s revocable living trust, there are provisions within her revocable trust, Pet Trust, that requires that I care for her dog, Gunner and her cat, Otis. I know nothing about caring for animals nor do I have any interest in doing so. These two animals could live for another 10 years each and I have no intention of being their Zookeeper. An estate worth over $6 million, as sole beneficiary, I must now become a Zookeeper when I should be looking out for myself and my future. Isn’t there a way I can have this trust provision ignored or waived and send these two animals to the County dog pound for adoption? I don’t like animals yet alone do I know how to care for them. And I don’t like the idea of throwing money away on something that provides no benefit to me.
Fortunately, for Gunner and Otis, animals are protected in Florida and every state in the US including the District of Columbia. Approximately 70% of all households in America, like your mother, own one or more pets. She and people like her think of pets as little people with hair or fur. Most likely, your mother loved Gunner and Otis every bit as much as she loved you. But there are provisions within the law whereby you can have the animals transferred to a different guardian, although you and the guardian must comply with the designated care set forth within your mother’s trust. If you are a pet owner, no doubt you want the best for your
pet. But what will happen if you are no longer able to care for your pets due to your incapacity or death? Who will take custody of these beloved pets and provide them the same level of care that you provided? How can you make your wishes known to those who will care for your pets? How can you provide funds and directions to assist in day-to-day care issues or death decisions for your pets? As of 2016, all 50 states including the District of Columbia/Washington DC enacted Pet Trust Laws. Florida Statutes provides that a trust may be created to provide for the care of an animal alive during the settlor’s lifetime. The trust terminates on the death
of the animal or, if the trust was created to provide for the care of more than one animal alive during the settlor’s lifetime, on the death of the last surviving animal. The executor of an estate may request the court to appoint a person to enforce the trust or to remove a person appointed. Ask any wounded warrior or a friend who has a hairy companion and they will all tell you that they have the best dog in the world. “None of them are wrong.” If you have a pet, be sure you include Pet Trust provisions in your trust for them once you depart this world.

Learning to Love Theater Again PHOTO COURTESY OF AARON SINCLAIR
A Bishop Moore High School student renews his love for theater through the Daniel Mills Apprenticeship at Garden Theatre.
Aaron Sinclair
By Tarre Beach
A
aron Sinclair, a rising senior at Bishop Moore High School, has loved performing on stage since he was in fourth grade. In sixth grade he got the role of Scrooge in “A Christmas Carol,” which he says was challenging but enjoyable. Then in high school his love for acting started to wane a little. Luckily in the spring of last year he saw the Garden Theatre’s productions of “A Raisin in the Sun’’ and “Godspell” which renewed his interest in theatre and inspired him to apply for the Daniel Mills Apprenticeship. “I was completely terrified. I’d never done community theater before. I’d only been in school plays,” Sinclair says. “I was both scared of being rejected and scared I’d get the apprenticeship.” When he received the news that he was one of the 30 students to receive the apprenticeship—his younger sister Sydney Francis was also given an apprenticeship—he was a bit surprised but ready to dive back into acting. Now that the 2021-22 season apprenticeship is ending, Sinclair reflects on how grateful he is to have been an apprentice.
12
Central Florida Lifestyle | July 2022
One of Sinclair’s favorite parts of the program was participating in a devised plays project. In this project all the apprentices collaborate to create, write, produce, and perform monologues from scratch. According to the Garden Theatre educational team, the theme of the 2021-22 devised project was “the search for personal identity and how community can support the discovery and definition of who we are.” Sinclair wrote a monologue about labels. “I wanted to express how people label each other, and how you can let go of labels, find acceptance and learn to love yourself,” Sinclair says. Sinclair highlights the Garden Theatre’s strong emphasis on creating a positive environment for performers and stage technicians as one of the key benefits of the apprenticeship As Sinclair explains it, being a part of the apprenticeship was different than being in a school theater class or drama club. It felt like a positive environment that encouraged creative expression. “I’m not saying school theater is bad or wrong, just that it’s different. In the apprenticeship we were asked
how we were feeling and to talk about our own experiences. It felt validating to have the focus on us, not just our performances,” Sinclair says. Sinclair wants to continue his acting education and has hopes it may extend into college and maybe even a career. As captain of his speech and debate club at school, Sinclair uses what he’s learned in theater by writing speeches and doing performances before competitions. He also looks forward to writing plays and monologues in the future. Sinclair advises younger performers to not hold themselves back but bring a part of themselves to their characters. He says doing so is a great way to improve your performance and have fun. “Don’t think about what others think about you. Think about what the audience is going to experience through your storytelling.”
Note: The Daniel Mills Apprenticeship, which is generously provided to young theater students by the Mills family will continue at the Garden Theatre for the 2022-23 season and will also be offered at Orlando Shakes this season. As of press time, application deadlines have already passed and students have been chosen for both programs but not officially announced yet.

Summer Patio Love Beat the heat by turning your outdoor patio into a refreshing summer oasis. By Nicole Paskowsky
S
ummertime means spending sunny afternoons in the backyard grilling, playing games or relaxing with a good book and a cold beverage. Whether entertaining friends and family or flying solo, why not step up your patio with some special features this season to make it even more amazing? Try any of these patio ideas to transform your outdoor space into a true summer oasis. Create a Hanging Garden
Abundant sunshine and rain showers are the ideal combo to beautify your patio with a vertical hanging garden. A leaning ladder packs a lot of greenery into a compact, easyto-move design. Trailing plants like geraniums, ivy, and even strawberries look especially lovely draped over the steps. Stacking crates into a customized, multilevel design allows you to mix and match shade- and sun-loving plants. You can also build a wall-style hanging garden using cedar posts, hex wire and terra cotta pots that allows airflow for enjoying the summer breeze.
16
Central Florida Lifestyle | July 2022
Install a Misting System
When the heat index skyrockets, maximizing your patio time means finding ways to stay cool. There’s nothing like a refreshing mist on your skin for an instant reprieve from the summer heat and humidity. Installing a mister can reduce your patio temperature by about 20 degrees, which makes a huge impact. Many prepackaged misting kits can outfit patios of any size and come with simple instructions that are easy to follow for the average DIYer. As a bonus, your misting system can help water your plants, keeping your patio lush and green.
Get It Covered
Successful summertime entertaining is all about shade. Patio covers also make your outdoor space usable rain or shine. Free-standing patio umbrellas can move around and come in many sizes, colors and patterns for a fun design pop. A retractable awning is another flexible option that you can extend to cool down or fold away to catch some rays. For a permanent
statement with function and style, give your patio some much-needed shade with a pergola. Decorate it with creeping vines or hanging plants, or string twinkling lights for summer nights. You can even equip it with a fan or hang curtains for instant privacy and a bug blocker. Add an Outdoor Bar
Hot days are best with a cold beverage in hand. Many outdoor bars are free-standing structures made with repurposed materials, such as pallets, barrels, antique doors and vintage dressers. Larger options include a modified shed, kids playhouse or pre-constructed tiki hut. The basic elements you’ll need are a high countertop, shelves or drawers to stock spirits and barware, and accompanying seating. You can expand the concept into a makeshift outdoor kitchen by incorporating a grill or outdoor pizza oven into the design. Or keep it simple and versatile by rolling a stocked bar cart onto the patio for cocktail hour.
+ HOMESTYLE She Shed
Rise of the She Shed Women need a space of their own too.
By Nicole Paskowsky
M
ove over man cave — the she shed has arrived. That’s right, the ladies are turning the garage or backyard shed into their own mixed-use escape. Most women could use more space, whether for a hobby, as a home office, or to seek much-needed solitude. But what is the best way to capitalize on this extra square footage and transform these otherwise dusty, drab areas into livable lady havens? From how to set it up to what to use it for, these she shed ideas will have you ready to spark your unique joy. First, don’t leave your she shed looking basic. Sprucing it up with exterior design touches like a fresh color palette, a fountain, a stone path leading to the entrance, or a privacy hedge or bushes will make it feel like an enchanting oasis. Sheds are often dark and enclosed, so swapping in a windowed door or French doors, or installing a skylight or window will brighten the space with natural light. Next, run new electrical wiring or get the current system up to par. Get this done before adding furniture and decorations. You’ll need power for electronics, appliances, exercise equipment, and the all-important lighting scheme. Lights aren’t just functional; they are an essential element of your she shed decor. Consider hanging a chandelier as a focal piece, installing dimmers for mood lighting, or running string lights to make every day feel festive.
18
Central Florida Lifestyle | July 2022
Most sheds are limited in size, so storage is key. Fill your she shed with multipurpose furniture to maximize every square inch. Smaller-scale pieces such as a daybed instead of a sofa or a floating ledge rather than a table will make it feel more spacious. Utilize coffee tables and benches with builtin drawers or floor-to-ceiling shelving to house and organize books, movies, and arts-and-crafts supplies. Now your she shed is ready to tailor to your specific needs. If you require a calm and cozy sanctuary, outfit a comfy nook with pillows and throws for reading and uninterrupted naps, perhaps alongside a candle-filled faux fireplace. Include a desk or work table — maybe installed on hinged latches to fold away — so the space can double as a distraction-free home office or place to spread out your art and scrapbooking projects. A she shed can also be where you indulge in your favorite activities without impacting other family members, like playing guitar, listening to music as loud as you like, or screening movies in surround sound. You can carve out room for home gym equipment or yoga mats, complete with an essential oil diffuser and space for stretching. Or stock your she shed with a minifridge, bar cart and your favorite cocktail spirits for unwinding after a long day or hosting a ladies’ night in the perfect party lounge.

Cool for the Summer Here are a few delicious frozen cocktail options to give your blender a workout.
By Erica Rudnick Macalintal
C
ocktails are always a treat, and the summer heat presents a great opportunity to have fun cooling them down. Frozen cocktails are especially yummy, so here are a few delicious options to give your blender a workout.
Pina Colada: This go-to poolside cocktail is easily recreated at home with just a few ingredients, most of which you can pick up from your liquor store. Some people prefer to add the rum on top of the frozen concoction as a floater, but adding it into the mixture prior to blending itself gives it better distribution. However, if you have some non-imbibers in your company, keeping it as a separate, optional topper is considerate. You can also add an extra floater in addition to blending it to give the beverage extra kick. Traditional Pina Colada 6 oz cream of coconut (Coco Lopez is great and found in the mixer section of your liquor store) ■ 6 oz pineapple chunks and juice (fresh or canned) ■ 6 oz gold rum ■
Combine all ingredients with ice in a blender, garnish with pineapple wedge and serve. 20
Central Florida Lifestyle | July 2022
Pro-tip: If your refrigerator has a crushed ice function, use that rather than cubed ice – it will cut down on the heavy lifting for your blender. Wine Slushie: Wine slushies are a newer trend that are great for when you’re looking for a lighter-octane beverage. You can use any kind of wine you like, but it’s a good idea to stick with wine that isn’t terribly expensive – color, bouquet, and other aspects that aficionados appreciate are generally lost once thrown into a blender. A refreshing white wine (sparkling or otherwise) is a good start, then add fruit of choice and sweetener. Strawberry Bubbly Slushie 1-2 cups sparkling wine (you can sub sparkling wine with plain white and carbonated water – whatever is readily available) ■ 1 cup strawberries ■ Simple syrup / sweetener to taste ■
Combine all ingredients with ice in a blender, garnish with fruit and serve. Pro-tip: Use frozen fruit rather than fresh fruit and ice. It will eliminate the extra water that can make your drink flat rather than fun.
Frozen Gin and Tonic: This is a high-octane option for those who want to chill out their usual favored cocktail. Feel free to snazz up your recipe with cucumbers, lime garnishes or sugar rims for a refreshing twist. Gin and Tonic Teaser 6 oz gin ■ 4 oz tonic water ■ 3 oz lime juice ■ Simple syrup (optional) ■ 3 ounces chopped cucumber (optional) ■
Combine all ingredients with ice in a blender, garnish with lime or cucumber and serve. These are just a few options. Try strawberry daiquiris, rum runners, frozen mudslides or anything else that might be boozy and delicious. Have fun and enjoy!

Protect Your Skin From the Sun Summertime isn’t the only time that skin cancer can develop. Learn more about the different types of skin cancers and how you can prevent them from forming.
I
t is common knowledge that the skin is the body’s largest organ. But do you know everything the skin does for the body? It protects internal organs from injury, acts as a barrier to germs, helps to retain fluids and control body temperature, and assists with making vitamin D. It also protects the rest of the body from ultraviolet (UV) rays. Since the skin constantly comes into contact with UV rays, it can become damaged and skin cancer can potentially form. Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer and there are several forms: basal and squamous cell skin cancers and melanoma. Basal and squamous cell skin cancers begin in the outer layer of your skin and develop on sun-exposed areas like the face, ears, neck, lips and backs of the hands. Basal cell cancers grow slowly and rarely spread to other parts of the body while squamous cell cancers are more likely to grow into deeper layers of the skin and spread, although the spreading of this type
22
Central Florida Lifestyle | July 2022
of skin cancer is not common. Some people develop more than one of these skin cancers, which are easily treatable if they are found early, when they are small and have not spread. Melanoma accounts for only a small percentage of skin cancers. It starts in the melanocytes, or the cells that make the brown pigment known as melanin, which gives the skin its color. Melanoma can start on almost any part of the skin, even in places that aren’t usually exposed to the sun. It is almost always curable when it is found early, but it is more likely to grow and spread into other parts of the body where it can be much harder to treat. Because of this, melanoma causes most skin cancer deaths. There are many risk factors for developing skin cancer including having too much exposure to UV rays from the sun or tanning beds, having pale skin that easily burns and having severe sunburns in the past. You could also be at risk if you have multiple or unusual moles, a weakened immune
system or are older in age. It is crucial to protect your skin when you’re in the sun. Seek shade, especially between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. when the sun is strongest, and keep the shadow rule in mind: if your shadow is shorter than you then the sun’s rays are at their strongest. Use protective clothing in the sun as well as broad-spectrum sunscreen and lip balm with an SPF 30 or higher. Wear a wide-brimmed hat to shade your face, neck and ears and wear wrap-around sunglasses with 100 percent UVA and UVB absorption. See a trusted health care provider if you notice any changes in your skin including changes in a mole or a new growth, scaliness or roughness, a sore that doesn’t heal, the spread of pigment beyond its border or a change in the sensation of your skin. Know Your Sunscreen Courtesy of The Skin Cancer Foundation
Sunscreens come in many formulations and delivery methods, and it can take trial and error to find the one you like best. Whether it’s a sport spray, an easy-to-use stick or a rich moisturizer with antiaging ingredients, the best sunscreen is the one you will use every day. SPF stands for sun protection factor. The number tells you how long the sun’s UVB rays would take to redden your skin when using a particular sunscreen compared with the amount of time without sunscreen. So if you use an SPF 15 product exactly as directed (applied generously and evenly, and reapplied after two hours or after sweating or swimming), it would take you 15 times longer to burn than if you weren’t wearing sunscreen.
Broad spectrum
The words “broad spectrum” on a label indicate that the sunscreen contains ingredients that effectively protect against UVA rays as well as UVB.
Water resistance
While sunscreens can’t claim to be waterproof, they can be labeled water resistant for either 40 or 80 minutes. Yes, you can burn even when you’re in the water, so reapplying is key!
Sensitive skin
Products containing zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, sometimes referred to as mineral or physical formulas, may be less likely to cause skin irritation in people who have sensitive skin. The pitfall: Most people don’t apply sunscreen exactly as directed. They may not apply it liberally enough, might miss spots and may forget to reapply regularly. Slather it on! The Skin Cancer Foundation advises everyone to use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher every day. For extended outdoor activity, use a water-resistant, broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. Reapply every two hours or after swimming or sweating.

P
icnics are the perfect summer activity. Sitting under the sun, listening to music and eating snacks with friends is the perfect way to make memories. This July, grab some friends (or that special someone) and roll out a picnic blanket. It’s time to take your picnic game up a notch with these easy, customizable and delicious picnic recipes.
Pinwheel Sandwiches For this recipe, there are many different variations of ingredients you can include to make it fit your own personal taste. Feel free to switch out meats and cheeses as you wish, but for now, I’ll show you the recipe for Italian pinwheel sandwiches.

This will be what holds together the pinwheels. 3. Take your meats, cheeses, and lettuce or spinach and place them evenly across the pinwheels, focusing them towards the center. 4. Roll the tortillas into tight rolls and slice them, making even sized pinwheels.

Juice 3 or 4 lemons into a cup and add the lemon juice and the simple syrup to a pitcher. Add the cold water and taste. Adjust to your own desire. 3. When serving, add muddled or sliced strawberries and sliced lemons to a glass or a mason jar. Add in your desired amount of strawberry liquor and pour your fresh lemonade over. To simplify this recipe, mix premade lemonade with strawberry liquor, cut strawberries and sliced lemons!

Topping Options ■ ■ ■ ■ ■
Berry jam Strawberry topping Chocolate Ganache Whipped cream Berry garnishes
Directions
1. Mix cream cheese, powdered sugar and vanilla until smooth. Mix in a tablespoon of lemon juice to brighten the flavor. 2. In the bottom of the mason jar, add a layer of crumbled graham crackers which will act as the cheesecake crust. Fill the rest of the jar with the cheesecake filling and leave room for your topping. Feel free to make your own jam or top it with any of your favorite toppings. You can also layer the toppings and the filling throughout the jar to make a picture-perfect pattern. Garnish with berries, graham cracker crumbles or whipped cream and enjoy!
While picnics are fun, it’s also important to keep your picnic food safe in the Florida heat. For all these recipes, make sure to keep perishable items cold. Bring enough ice and gel packs to keep your food fresh. Do not keep perishable food out for more than two hours and have plenty of water on hand to stay hydrated. 24

Elite Pain Management and Physical Medical Treatment at Masson Spine Institute By Alexis George
L
ocated in West Orange Orlando, Masson Spine Institute (MSI) is a passionate advocate for prevention, wellness, fitness and extreme recovery in the face of spinal injury. Founded by Dr. Robert Masson, internationally recognized neurosurgeon specializing in minimally invasive spine surgery and sports spine medicine, MSI continuously strives for optimization strategies to improve patient outcome and functionality. Regardless of the treatment strategy employed, the surgeons and staff at MSI emphasize the value of preventative health by providing a comprehensive multimodality approach that ensures patients can return to an active, pain-free life following spinal treatment. And as the practice continues to expand its treatment options, MSI welcomes Dr. Jay Wright, M.D., to its team. Meet Dr. Jay Wright
Dr. Jay Wright, M.D., didn’t always dream of becoming a doctor. In fact, his background is in mechanical engineering. But after having the opportunity to work as an engineer, he quickly realized he didn’t enjoy it as much as he thought he would. So, he shifted focus. “I felt that medicine would combine my love of analysis and figuring out problems while at the same time doing something that would make a positive difference in people’s lives,” Dr. Wright says. He is a graduate of the University of Texas Medical School at Houston, and he completed his residency at the University of Texas Southwestern with a specialty in physical medicine and rehabilitation. Dr. Wright was board

certified by the American Board of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation and received additional board certification in pain management. Shortly thereafter, Dr. Wright began his first job at Florida Center for Orthopedics, where he has served for the past 21 years. Now, he will bring his expertise in elite pain management and physical medicine treatment to MSI. Over the years, Dr. Wright and Dr. Masson would often refer patients to one another, so when the opportunity came to join the MSI team, it was a natural fit. “I’m most excited about joining the team and working alongside providers that share the same philosophy as I do regarding striving for optimal functional recovery and allowing patients to pursue their passions because of that,” says Dr. Wright.
While participating in sports can contribute to spinal injury, Dr. Wright says just living life puts pressure on your back and can lead to injuries. So, in his role as a physiatrist he has undergone extensive training to improve the function of patients and as a pain management physician he is able to treat spine related conditions using interventional techniques. “When a patient comes to see me with chronic pain and has lost their hope, and then tells me that I’ve saved their life by reducing their pain and increasing their function, that’s just an amazing feeling to me.”
there’s some degree of physical therapy, aquatic therapy or a home exercise program that is needed but the timing of that can vary depending on whether their condition is acute or chronic. Sometimes interventional procedures are needed prior to the rehabilitation to enhance the healing process or reduce the pain for optimal rehabilitation and functional recovery.”
He says there are three things that are critical to maximize functional recovery.
“We have a well-known culture of extreme recovery and spine health crises and management and we’re excited to be bringing Dr. Wright to the team to add the holistic and conservative care component to the surgical care,” says Dr. Masson.
1. Establishing an Accurate Diagnosis
“I really take my time reviewing the diagnostic studies and doing a focused physical exam and asking the right questions and really listening to my patients. Being diligent in that can lead to diagnoses that may have been overlooked or really help me to pinpoint where the dysfunction is coming from.”
2. Identifying the Patient’s Goals
“I feel that goal setting is important, so I ask the patients what types of activities they want to resume to help establish the goals for functional recovery. To accomplish great things, you must have something to aim for so that’s where the goal setting comes in. The goals also help motivate the patient to be compliant with their treatment plan and they also can alert me to activities that might have to be limited temporarily to avoid worsening of their conditions.”
3. Formulating a Good Treatment Plan
“As far as that goes, I use my experience as both a specialist in rehabilitation and pain management. To increase the function and get the patients back to what they enjoy, usually
So having someone who concentrates on functional recovery and assists with getting patients back to doing what they love will be another added benefit for MSI patients. Fun Facts About Dr. Wright: ■ ■ ■ ■

Created by Employer Direct Healthcare, SurgeryPlus is a “supplemental benefit offered by your employer for non-emergency surgeries, which provides high-quality care and concierge-level member service at a lower cost.” As MSI is a Center of Excellence, Dr. Masson recommends checking your employee benefits package to see if it includes the SurgeryPlus program. “It will expedite their entry into our practice and is a zero out of pocket employee benefit,” says Dr. Masson. 4 Rivers Smokehouse Smoked Brisket
Margaritaville Resort Orlando Burger
Serves 20 or more
Servings: 8
Who doesn't love brisket? Once smoked, this versatile cut of beef can be stacked inside a sandwich, placed on pizza or simply savored on its own. Now, you can make this recipe from a local BBQ staple from the comfort of home.
When you transform your backyard into your own, personal paradise, you can eat a Cheeseburger in Paradise any day of the week. Prepare it just as Jimmy Buffett likes it with the help of this recipe.
Courtesy of John Rivers, 4 Rivers Smokehouse
4 RIVERS BRISKET RUB: • 2 tablespoons freshly ground black pepper • 1 teaspoon garlic powder • 1 teaspoon dried parsley • 1 teaspoon oregano • 1 teaspoon coarse salt • 1 teaspoon onion powder • 1 teaspoon chili powder • 1 teaspoon sugar
INGREDIENTS • 2 pieces white sandwich bread, crusts removed and cut into 1/4-inch pieces. • 1/3 cup milk • 2 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt • 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper • 3 garlic cloves, minced • 1 1/2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce • 2 tablespoons tomato paste • 3 pounds 85% lean ground beef • 3 scallions, very finely sliced (optional) • 8 hamburger buns
BURGER PHOTOGRAPH: COURTESY OF MARGARITAVILLE RESORT ORLANDO
INGREDIENTS BRISKET • 1 whole brisket, from 10 to 15 pounds, untrimmed with full fat cap • 1 cup 4 Rivers Brisket Rub • All-Purpose BBQ Sauce • Sliced dill pickles • Onions, sliced thin • White bread
Courtesy of Margaritaville Resort Orlando
DIRECTIONS Mix all brisket rub ingredients in a small bowl. Apply it liberally on brisket, making sure to cover all sides and crevices. Refrigerate uncovered at least 4 hours, preferably overnight. Remove brisket from the refrigerator at least 1 hour before smoking, letting it come to room temperature. Soak hickory chips or chunks for 1 hour before smoking. Light charcoal and allow it to burn to a white ash. Place soaked wood on top of hot coals and adjust smoker vents to settle the temperature between 200˚ and 225˚F. Place brisket, fat side up, indirectly over the smoking wood and close the lid. Depending on the size of your brisket, smoking will take from 12 to 18 hours. A general rule of thumb is 75 minutes for every pound of brisket. Replenish coals and wood as needed, opening the smoker lid as little as possible. After 8 to 10 hours, check the brisket's internal temperature using a meat thermometer. Continue checking every 30 to 60 minutes until it reaches 190˚ to 192˚F. Remove brisket from the smoker and allow it to rest for 1 to 2 hours before carving. Serve with white bread, pickles, onions and sauce.
DIRECTIONS Preheat the grill to high heat. In a large bowl, mash the bread and milk together with a fork until it forms a chunky paste. Add the salt, pepper, garlic, Worcestershire sauce and paste and mix well. Add the ground beef and scallions and break the meat up with your hands. Mix everything together until just combined. Divide the mixture into 8 equal portions and form balls. Flatten the balls into 3/4-inch patties about 4-1/2 inches across. Form a slight depression in the center of each patty to prevent the burgers from puffing up on the grill. Oil the grilling grates. Grill the burgers, covered, until nicely browned on the first side, 2 to 4 minutes. Flip burgers and continue cooking for a few minutes more until desired doneness is reached. Before serving, toast the buns on the cooler side of the grill if desired.

+ EXPERT ADVICE | Banking
Homebuyers Look to New Home Construction
to Bypass Crowded Housing Market
By Carlos Cedeno, Trustco Bank East Colonial Branch Manager
W
ith more than 1,500 people moving to the Orlando area each week, it’s no surprise that it is one of the fastest-growing metro areas in the United States. That is reflected in the scorching hot, record-breaking housing market, according to a report from the Orlando Regional Realtors Association. The group’s May 2022 report showed the median home price in the Orlando area was $379,950, a $10,000 increase from April and a record high for the fourth month in a row. While the inventory of available homes is beginning to loosen up, experts warn there still isn’t enough housing available to meet the demand for the projected 5.2 million residents who are expected to call the area home by 2030. Instead of competing with hundreds of other interested buyers for an existing home, many buyers are looking to Trustco Bank for new construction and home building loans to meet their needs. The demand for new homes in Florida isn’t waning – this year will see more new homes built than in 2021, according to the University of
Central Florida Institute for Economic Forecasting. Last month, Trustco processed 300 new home construction loan applications for the Sunshine State – a 200 percent increase over the same time last year. Building a new home is an attractive option for prospective buyers because it is a solution to finding their dream home in a tight housing market and can customize the home to their needs for a comparable cost to an existing home. Prospective home buyers are concerned about a looming market crash, but if you’re waiting for the bubble to burst and for prices to drop – experts say that isn’t likely to happen in Central Florida because of the strong demand for housing and the rapidly growing population. Trustco’s home construction loan interest rate is locked in for 330 days, so buyers can rest assured that the rate they receive at the beginning of the process will be honored at closing time, even if the Federal Reserve increases rates during that time. Trustco clients who locked into last year’s low-interest rates are enjoying below 3 percent interest rates as they move into their new homes
this summer, despite recent rate hikes from the Federal Reserve. There are a lot of benefits to building your dream home, whether you have a piece of land and want to build a home on it, or you’re working with a developer in a planned community. Consider that Trustco Bank offers one single closing date – there are no surprises or rate hikes throughout the duration of the building process. Our clients appreciate that we don’t require Private Mortgage Insurance for borrowers with a down payment that is less than 20 percent of the loan amount. We’re proud to be a portfolio lender, which means we loan money against customer deposits, keeping money in the communities we serve. We’re different from other banks in that we keep your loan on our books and will never sell it to another lender. It’s exciting to see so many who want to call Central Florida home. Whether you’re new to the Sunshine State, a lifelong resident, or somewhere in between – Trustco is excited about the opportunity to be Your Hometown lender.
Carlos Cedeno serves as the Branch Manager of Trustco Bank’s East Colonial branch in Orlando, Florida. He came to Trustco in 2017 as an Assistant Manager before becoming Branch Manager the following year. Carlos has an MBA with a focus in management and with over 10 years of experience in the banking industry, sales and customer service, Carlos can match his clients to the mortgage, loan or product that best fits their finances. Trustco Bank operates 144 branches in total, 53 located within the state of Florida, 39 of which are in Central Florida. Trustco is known for offering a wide variety of great deposit and loan products and the bank specializes in residential mortgage lending. To learn more about the bank visit www.TrustcoBank.com.

Perseverance
Would you change anything about how you have handled challenges or successes thus far in your life?
YES! I would first try to pause to have a quick dialogue with God to show me how loving-kindness can be expressed towards myself in situations, so that my cup of love and kindness is filled and ready to be poured out to others. I usually find that forgiveness is a key part in this – myself and others even though they may not ask or deserve it. Then sending blessings of love.

Dr. Audrey Drummonds
What are you most proud of?
My three children. I can often look back and see where I could have been a better mom, yet despite my shortcomings I am blessed with two sons and a daughter that are simply amazing adults.
What is the biggest challenge you have faced and what did you learn from it?
Battling cancer. When I was diagnosed in 2012 with two different breast cancers, I had a double mastectomy chemo and reconstruction. It’s a journey that changed everything about who I was before the cancer. The fear of “what if” was hard to battle after I was in remission. Each year got a little easier to move on with life until 6 years later it came back for the second time. I asked people to pray specifically to “keep fear off me”, and to keep the thoughts of “what if” away. I was also going through a marriage crisis at this time which made the stress issues challenging for healing. After another year of a cancer battle journey, I did well to move forward until two years later, when the cancer had spread for the third time. This past year I’ve gone through four surgeries, radiation, and now two chemo pills for life. I have learned going through each battle that the joy of the Lord is my strength and Life. During each trial and tribulation, I have found another realm of His love and presence with me. I hear His voice tell me, “Audrey, I know the plans I have for you, and they are good plans with abundant life. I will heal you Audrey of all your wounds and afflictions. I am always with you. I will never leave you. You are mine, beautiful and perfect in My heart.” (Jeremiah 29:11, 30:17, Psalm 139, Matthew 28:20)

Inspector Gadget Keep these few gadgets on your radar for a safe, fun and manageable summer! By Erica Rudnick Macalintal
F
lorida summer is in full swing, and there are loads of nifty gadgets which can make it more fun and manageable. Preparing for storm season as well as spending time outdoors can be taken to the next level with the use of some advanced technology, so keep these gadgets on your radar. Storm prep: Hurricane season in Florida is nothing to sneeze at– every week it seems like there’s a new tropical system. While it’s important to watch local news for updated coverage, power outages are frequent and can make it difficult to keep track of what’s happening in real time. A wireless weather monitor such as the Newentor Weather Station Wireless Indoor / Outdoor Thermometer is great to keep around. Not only can you watch the changing stats when a storm is brewing, it’s a great way to keep an eye on everyday stats when storms aren’t a threat, giving you a better gauge for when numbers vary outside of their normal ranges.

And while tropical summer storms are all but inevitable, so too are the power outages that accompany them. Having a storm radio available for when things go dark is critical to being prepared. The Eton American Red Cross FRX3+ Emergency NOAA Weather Radio should be a staple in all Florida households, given that it is battery-powered or, in a pinch, powered by a manual hand crank. It also acts as a flashlight, signal beacon, and a charge station for your smart devices, which is invaluable when the time comes for keeping an eye on storm situations. Savor (and beat) the heat: Preparation is important, but luckily summer isn’t all about storms and blackouts. The (very) warm weather and sunshine allows for plenty of opportunity to enjoy the outdoors. Beach days are almost mandatory and made better by incorporating tunes via portable speaker. The Willen speaker by Marshall offers great sound, water resistance, and is super cute given that it’s styled to look like
a traditional guitar amplifier. For those of us who don’t want to share our tunes with the world, some Bose QuietComfort 45 Bluetooth Wireless Noise Canceling Headphones pair to any smart device and can drown out the sounds of noisy neighbors while relaxing by the seashore. Though, let’s face it – be it the beach, theme park or even your driveway, on bad days, Florida heat can be nothing short of stifling. Having a portable fan ready can make the difference between sweltering in despair and easily refreshing yourself. This cute O2COOL Deluxe Handheld Battery Powered Water Misting Fan is light, inexpensive, and comes in a variety of colors. Fill it with icycold water to keep yourself even more refreshed on hot summer days.

WE ARE HIRING
Summer’s here and that means it’s time to find something for your kids to do. From outdoor hikes to making some money, don’t just let them have all the fun, make it a family affair. By Tarre Beach
T
here are a few things you can usually count on every summer. It’s going to be hot, your utility bill is going to increase from running the air conditioning non-stop, and if you’ve got kids, you’ll usually get a complaint or two about how they don’t have anything to do. No matter what their age your kids are probably going to utter the traditional children’s summer anthem, “I’m so bored.” Whether they’re in a summer program for part of the school break or you’re a stay-at-home or work-from-home parent, why not consider taking a little time to reconnect with your kids and possibly even your own inner child with these fun activities you can do together.
Just Like Riding a Bike
If you weren’t aware, the bike trails in and around Central Florida are fantastic. No matter what part of the area you live in, there’s likely a paved, bike trail near you. In Seminole County there is Little Econ Greenway and Seminole-Wekiva Trail. In Orange County there’s the West Orange Trail and Cady Way Trail. You’ll find parks to stop at to refresh yourself, bike air pump stations and even some horses along the way. Don’t have a bike or have kids too small to bike? Don’t worry. You can rent a bike (and helmet) or a toddler bike trailer so your little ones can still enjoy the ride.

Take ‘em Out to a Ball Game
Several Major League Baseball teams do their spring training in sunny Florida, but did you know that many also get their rookies from the Florida Complex League (FCL)? This rookie-level circuit has operated in Florida since 1964. Previously known as the Gulf Coast League, most games are played throughout the summer at Major League Spring Training Complexes and are free to the public. Opening day was June 6 and closing day will be August 23. Games are played at FCL fields all over Florida including Bradenton, Sarasota, Clearwater, Lakeland, and Fort Myers. Go out and enjoy America’s pastime. You might just see the next Derek Jeter or Barry Bonds out there. Games and Field Info:

Saturday of each month. However, the group does not meet in July or August. If you can’t find a genealogy group to meet up with, just get on the internet. There are plenty of free sites you can use to access the national archives, census records, immigration records, and military service records. Don’t forget the journey you take together—physically or figuratively-- is part of the fun.
Volunteer Together
Helping others is a great learning experience that can teach kids empathy, grow their communication skills, and better understand the diversity of their community. Hands on Orlando is a volunteer organization that helps families find volunteer opportunities across Central Florida. A great go-to volunteer organization in the area to consider giving your time to is Second Harvest Food Bank. They need volunteers to sort food every week. Kids as young as 10 years old can volunteer with an adult and teens 16 years old or older can volunteer without one. Spending time with your child giving to others will have a positive impact not just on your family, but the community too.

While working might not sound like summer fun to you, your kids might find it entertaining and lucrative. Gen Z may not be ready for babysitting to earn money, but there’s still plenty of ways to make a buck. Think about something your child is good at and see if there’s a market for it. Selling handmade items such as slime, playdough, hair accessories, book markers, Christmas ornaments, key chains or fridge magnets could prove financially fruitful. Check out your local craft store for ideas on things to make and sell. If service seems more up your child’s alley think dog walking, lawn mowing or plant watering. Of course, your child’s abilities and age should be considered before setting up shop. Supervise as needed but try to let your child be the boss.

Camping and Glamping
Roughing it outdoors may be a lot of fun to some families while it might sound like torture to others. Pick your level of camping comfort and make memories with your kiddos. If you want flush toilets and electricity, look into renting a modern cabin in a state park (take note: reservations should be made a season in advance). You can ditch the creature’s comforts, sleep under the stars or set up a tent to get a little more primitive. A visit to Lake Kissimmee State Park’s Cow Camp is like taking a trip back in time. For more civilized fun, check out Lake Louisa State Park’s cabin rentals. Cabins accommodate up to six people, have two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a full kitchen with appliances and a dining/living room.
Plan Your Visit/Make Reservations:
enger hunt with the great outdoors by adding geocaching. ORGT has a special geocaching tour for kids that includes a special geocoin prize. From Pensacola to Key West, all 71 of Florida’s state parks and trails are in on the fun (don’t worry, you don’t have to visit all the parks to complete the geotour). You can get your Operation Recreation Kids GeoTour or the general ORGT tracking sheet online and start looking. Florida Parks Geocaching Tour:

Success is Sweet for Orlando International Airport By Stina D’Uva
J
ust a few weeks ago, the Chamber had the pleasure of hosting trustees to a luncheon at Universal Orlando’s CityWalk, featuring guest speaker Kevin Thibault, CEO of Greater Orlando Aviation Authority (owner of Orlando International Airport) and former Florida Secretary of Transportation. Coincidentally, as I write this article, I am sitting at the Delta Lounge in Terminal B at Orlando International Airport; MCO to my fellow travelers. While listening to Kevin, I picked up a little detail that explains the initials MCO. I learned that our original airport was the McCoy Air Force Base and as plans developed to expand and relocate the airport, MCO was chosen as the name to honor Colonel Michael McCoy; MCO. Today, it is hard to imagine its past in comparison to what we have today, as the 7th busiest airport in the world. Yet, visionaries ignored the detractors, including a writer for the Wall Street Journal, who back in September 1981 predicted, we would never make it as an international destination. Victory is sweet success and it is important not just because tourists love our attractions and fly into MCO, but as residents, many like me transplants to Central Florida, we need a world-class airport. We are fortunate to have MCO in our backyard to make our travel, nationally and

abroad, easy and convenient. In fact, MCO is located within two hours for 50% of the population of Florida. The added beauty of this economic engine is that no local tax dollars fund the airport. Airlines, concessions, parking, car rentals and commercial enterprises fund it all. The visionaries that understood the importance of our region back in the late 70s, also knew that over 12,000 acres would allow for the growth of air travel for decades into the future. Granted, we are not back to pre-pandemic levels, yet are well on our way to that and MCO will be prepared with its soon to open, South Terminal C on September 19th. This new terminal, in Phase1, will allow for 15 gates and up to 20 aircrafts. It will be more customer friendly with shops and restaurants featured on the “air side” to allow for people to go through security and then relax, eat
and shop before boarding. Passengers will soon learn about the TSA 100% automated screening lanes, facial recognition for international arrivals and departures, and a state-of-the-art baggage handling system. Another feature of the terminal is its connectivity to Brightline. This train hub will connect South Florida to Orlando in 2023 and ultimately to Tampa. As Central Floridians, we will be even more centrally located to everything within our state and with choices on how to get there. I, for one, am thrilled to have MCO growing and in my backyard. Ever since I became a grandmother of an Ohio born grandson, and with my youngest son now calling himself a Bostonian, my travel out of our fantastic region has increased. Thank goodness for frequent flyer miles. Enjoy your travels this summer and be safe.

Independence Day Celebrates Freedom By Don Long, Lake Nona Regional Chamber of Commerce
J
uly 4, 2022, brings opportunities to celebrate freedoms we enjoy because of our democratic system of government. Independence Day celebrates the unanimous adoption of the Declaration of Independence by the Second Continental Congress in Philadelphia on July 4, 1776. Written mostly by Thomas Jefferson, the Declaration states according to Encyclopedia Britannica, “three basic ideas: (1) God made all men equal and gave them the rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness; (2) the main business of government is to protect these rights; (3) if a government tries to withhold these rights, the people are free to revolt and to set up a new government.” Though Congress has enjoyed fewer and fewer unanimous decisions as this nation ages, our daily freedoms of movement, religious choice, financial pursuits, press, to gather, and of free speech continue because Congress later approved our constitution using these three ideas. Therefore, as July 4, 2022, approaches, let us think about ways to enjoy and appreciate these freedoms. Interesting ways can include: ■

Support one of your local recreational facilities whether it is a local business or public park type facility exercising the right to gather. Talk with a friend about local or national government issues and see if there may be ways to collaborate for improvement using freedom of speech. Read a newspaper or the online application from a reputable news outlet to review how freedom of the press works. Pray or make an earnest wish for the well-being of your community and government to observe freedom of religion. Gather to enjoy a spectacular celebration that may include an afternoon of local attractions capped off by an exciting fireworks display.
Central Florida Lifestyle | July 2022
As you move from point to point, reflect that there are numerous locations around the Earth where the local populace cannot enjoy these freedoms. One only needs to watch the war in Ukraine or follow the events in the several authoritarian-based global governments where freedoms are either restricted or non-existent. Join me in celebrating Independence Day 2022 with friends and family and be thankful that the fathers of our nation drafted the Declaration of Independence. Former president Franklin D. Roosevelt understood, “in the truest sense, freedom cannot be bestowed; it must be achieved”. Achieve your freedoms on July 4 by enjoying them with thanks. in the (Beach) Bag By Alexandra Sullivan

f you’re looking for a creative project to do this summer that is also functional, you’ll love this DIY! Everyone has one of those T-shirts. You know the one, too big, kind of cute but not quite wearable anymore. So, grab that shirt and repurpose it as a beach bag! All you need are some scissors. Supplies: ■ ■ ■
T-shirt or tank top Fabric scissors Creativity
Optional: ■ ■ ■
Needle and thread/ sewing machine Embellishments Fabric glue
Step One:
If you’re using a tank top, skip this step! Cut the sleeves off your Tshirt. Make sure to make it a clean and even cut, these will serve as the straps of your bag.
Step Two:
Next, cut the collar off your Tshirt in a deep scoop. Now you have the top of your bag.
Step Three:
If you don’t want a fringe on the bottom of the bag, turn the shirt inside out. If you do want fringe for that extra flair, keep it as is. Cut several vertical strips through both layers of

the shirt across the bottom. Make sure that these strips are long enough that you’ll be able to tie them twice. Step Four:
Knot the strips on the front of the shirt with the strips on the back of the shirt until the bottom of the “bag” is completely closed. You’ll notice that there are holes in between each knotted pair. The next step will close those holes.
Step Five:
Tie the back strands of each pairing to the top strands of the pairing next to it. Feel free to add more knots if necessary to add sturdiness.
Step Six:
Turn the bag right side out and voila! You have a new beach bag. If you’re feeling extra creative, cut one of the sleeves as a pocket and glue or sew it on the front of your bag! You can also use embellishments such as patches, rhinestones or buttons to spice up the look of your beach bag. This project is a great way to repurpose old shirts and make a project that’s sure to be a topic of conversation. It also serves as a great gift idea, especially if you utilize a meaningful T-shirt in the process. Using recycled materials to create new things is sure to not only better our planet but will better your beach day!

+ DID YOU Know?
The Endangered Amur Leopards By Alexandra Sullivan
A
mur leopards are critically endangered. These leopards, which notably run up to 37 miles per hour and are native to Russia and Northern China, might be the rarest of big cats. Amur leopards have been endangered since 1996 due to poaching, habitat loss and the trade of their unique fur. “Unfortunately [their endangerment] is due to habitat loss— people encroaching on their native habitat to build farms, cities, towns. But also, a big thing is poaching for their skins,” says Christopher Torge, Director of Animal Operations at the Central Florida Zoo. “There’s a large black market for Amur leopard pelts so that’s the main cause of their decline in numbers in the wild.” While the population of these spotted beauties seems to be steadily increasing with the help of animal conservatories and institutions, only about 100 are left in the wild. Two Amur leopards call Central Florida their home, just like you and me. Temur and Jilin live at the Central Florida Zoo. Known for his laidback nature and his love for sitting in front of his fan, 5-year-old Temur has called the zoo his home for around two years. Jilin is new to the zoo family and has only been there for around one year. Jilin is 4-years-old and feisty. She loves to pounce and hunt, and she is expected to be a great mother to Amur leopard cubs. While the two have yet to meet, they’ve shared enrichment toys to become familiar with each other’s scents. The Central Florida Zoo participates in over 30 species survival

programs through the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, according to Elena Lamar, Director of Animal Care at Central Florida Zoo in a video about Amur leopards. The zoo is working with zoos across the world to maintain genetic diversity and keep the species alive. It is the goal of the Central Florida Zoo to help restore the population to a healthy, stable level. The zoo’s habitat expansion plan laid out its hopes for the future. The zoo wants to formally introduce the male Amur leopard, Temur, to the female Amur leopard, Jilin. This opens the potential for breeding Amur leopard cubs. This means a few more leopards are expected to be brought into the world to help the population of these wild cats grow. “For an animal here in the United States in other accredited institutions there’s only about 70 Amur leopards, so any leopards we can add to the population here in North America would be fantastic,” Torge says. The expansion program would create a bigger space for Temur and Jilin and some cubs to live, play and exercise. The Amur leopard habitat has been expanded vertically before by adding a second story, but it’s still not quite roomy enough for both Jilin and Temur yet.
The bigger space will also allow for more area for guests to see these rare cats in action. Guests of the zoo will get a one-of-a-kind opportunity to view the rarest cats in the world from a bigger perspective after the expansion. By the end of summer 2022, the Central Florida Zoo hopes to have raised $300,000 to make these dreams a reality. The expansion of the exhibit itself will most likely take 6-8 months so the zoo can ensure the safety of these carnivores and the guests that come to see them. “We are right now consulting with other professionals who have done this before and that way we have done all of our homework and know what to look for,” Torge says. “We hope they’re reproductively healthy and that after we do our introductions, 90 days later we should get 2-3 cubs.” Amur Leopard day, Aug. 27, 2022, will celebrate how important conservation efforts are for the beautiful and critically endangered Amur leopard. The Central Florida Zoo calls for guests to join on this day to raise awareness and protect these amazing animals from extinction.
