We all know we should eat well and exercise to stay healthy. Still, a new national survey commissioned by Orlando Health finds an alarming number of men skip another simple yet critical step in a healthy lifestyle: an annual checkup with their doctor.
A third of the men surveyed by The Harris Poll don’t think they need annual health screenings, and twothirds believe they are healthier than other men.
“It is statistically impossible for the majority of men to be healthier than most men,” says Dr. Thomas Kelley, family medicine specialist with Orlando Health Physician Associates.
The findings are concerning because many serious health issues often go unnoticed.
“Even if you think you’re healthy and not experiencing any symptoms, there can be developing issues that can be life-threatening if left unchecked,” Dr. Kelley says. “Some of those include rising blood pressure that can be a ticking time bomb for a heart attack or stroke, as well as colon cancer, one of the most deadly yet preventable cancers.”
As a primary care physician, Dr. Kelley has heard every excuse for men skipping their appointments for years at a time. Still, he says the underlying reason for avoiding the doctor’s office is often fear.
“Most men find the process easier than they thought,” Dr. Kelley says. “It takes about half an hour, and by the end of the appointment, you have the big picture about where you stand, what you’re at risk for, and what you need to do for your health in the future.”
Dexter Grant, 34, finally made an appointment with Dr. Kelley after 15 years without a checkup.
“In your 30s, you start to worry that every ache and pain could be the thing that takes you out,” Grant says. “But you can’t just avoid the issue out of fear of what your doctor will tell you.”
With a clean bill of health, Grant is relieved to know he’s as healthy as he feels.
“Just having the peace of mind that there aren’t any lingering issues that can cause serious problems in the next year makes me a lot more confident that I’m on the right path,” he says.
The survey also found that, rather than speaking with their doctor, 38 percent of men often get medical advice from social media, which can be dangerous if they are not referencing reputable medical sources. Nearly two in five men also admit that they put their pet’s health above their own, which is unsurprising to Dr. Kelley.
“To take care of others in your life, you first have to take care of yourself, including making that yearly appointment with your primary care doctor,” Dr. Kelley says.

Theologically
A revocable living family trust is a way to be a good steward of your resources. The Bible teaches us to responsibly manage what we have received and ensure our resources benefit future generations. By creating a trust, you can ensure that your assets are distributed according to your wishes and used in a way that aligns with your values and beliefs. For example, you may choose to set up a trust that provides for your grandchildren’s education or supports a charitable cause that is important to you.
Psychologically
A revocable living family trust can provide peace of mind and a sense of control. When creating a trust, you actively deliberate on your desires and make decisions on the distribution of your assets. It can be a cathartic process that allows you to reflect on your life and values and to ensure that your legacy reflects who you are and what you believe in. Additionally, knowing that your assets are protected, and someone will carry out your wishes can alleviate anxiety and provide a sense of security.
Sociologically
A revocable living family trust can help preserve family relationships. When you die without a clear plan for the distribution of your assets, it can lead to conflict and resentment among family members. By creating a trust, you can communicate your wishes and ensure that everyone is on the same page preventing misunderstandings and disagreements, and can help to maintain positive relationships among family members.
For example, consider a family where the parents have three children. Without a trust, the parents’ assets would be divided equally among the children. However, what if one of the children has special needs or requires more financial support than the others? By creating a trust for the special needs child, the parents can ensure that everyone is cared for fairly and equitably.
By considering the theological, psychological, and sociological implications of creating a trust, you can decide whether a trust is suitable for you and your family. Before doing nothing, seek the advice of an experienced estate planning attorney that practices wills, trusts and probate.
The theater is a place to tell stories about other people as well as stories about yourself. It’s also a place to try things on for size and see how they fit. Want to be a black woman trying to navigate the shifting culture of women in the ‘60s? Or a Latino gamer girl finding her way through her parents’ breakup?
For Evans High School sophomore Sincere Cunningham and University of Central Florida (UCF) senior Hailey Marquez, who are both Daniel Mills Apprentices, the theater has given them a way to tap into their most authentic selves and walk around in someone else’s shoes.
Cunningham, who is 16 and on the performance track, says her favorite part of performing is figuring out who her character is and seeing what works. If she had her choice of roles, she’d like to play Beneatha Younger from “Raisin in the Sun” because the character has so many levels and options that are at odds with each other. “Portraying that conflict would be fun to work on,” she says.
Recently, Cunningham played a member of the ensemble for “Carrie: The Musical” at Fringe ArtSpace, produced by Daniel Mills Theatre Company in association with Orlando Shakes. Instead of seeing her part as a minor role, Cunningham came up with a whole backstory for her character, whom she called T. “I see her as bougie and trying to act like she’s got money when she doesn’t. T has a sister named Kitty, who is her best friend. They balance each other out,” Cunningham says. Depending on who you ask, the play is either a dark comedy that exists to combat its subject matter or a tragedy with recognizable characters that speak to what it’s like growing up in a world of extremism.
Cunningham says besides Carrie’s supernatural powers, the play spoke to the authenticity of what it means to be a
teenager. Cunningham’s first introduction to performing began with being in the chorus in elementary school, eventually leading her to be in school talent shows and praise dancing at church. One of her roles was being all three ghosts in “A Christmas Carol” at Pine Wood Elementary. “It was a lot of lines to remember, but I kind of liked being spooky, sympathetic, and wise, too,” Cunningham says.
Marquez started in theatre as a performer but found her true calling was directing. “I love to see a play from the outside perspective, to see the bigger picture,” she says.
At 21 years old, Marquez says that wanting to be a director is not about trying to control everything but instead about choices. Marquez says she learned much about collaboration from Daniel Mills Apprenticeship leadership team Nick Bazo, Joe Walsh, and Roberta Emerson. “Sure, you can tell an actor how you want a scene done, but I find it so much more rewarding to let them do it their way, watch them play around with it, and then find out what works together. You never know what may come up and works,” Marquez says.
Marquez, also minoring in cinema and music studies, recently sang in the chorus for “Hunchback of Notre Dame in Concert” at the Dr. Phillips Performing Arts Center. She says it was exciting to get the opportunity to perform for such a large audience. Before that, her last production was codirecting the UCF Project Spotlight play “Race to Infinity.”
Marquez says the experience was scary and exciting because it was a developmental play with many moving parts. She also says she was grateful to co-direct it with Daniel Mills Apprentice alumni Hilary Pardey-Hernandez.
The play centers on a video-game-loving teenager named Sara navigating her parents’ divorce, which was especially meaningful for Marquez because the family is Latino. “Grow-
ing up in a Cuban-American household, I felt close to the idea of holding on to traditional Latino values while experiencing the differences between the generations,” Marquez says.
Preparing to graduate in the Fall, Marquez has her sights set on staying in Orlando and continuing to direct. Although her next project is “The Prom,” a Broadway-licensed work, she looks forward to working on more developmental plays. “Don’t get me wrong; I love Broadway musicals. But with well-known works, though, people expect things to be a certain way. With developmental work, it’s an unknown journey we all go on together,” Marquez says.
Both Cunningham and Marquez say they are eager to find out where their theater education will lead them and are grateful they’ve been taught the art of collaboration and learning from their mistakes. “We all make mistakes: actors, lighting techs, stage managers, directors… but sometimes you can use that. It’s kind of the cool thing about theater. It’s evolving, and it’s alive,” Marquez says.

Gone are the days when men walked into a barber shop and only asked for a trim. The modern man now desires a particular length and style and expects to leave the salon or barber shop looking and feeling his best. With the continual normalization of men’s grooming in our society, more and more men are investing in their appearance.
But for some, asking for a specific haircut, choosing who will perform the service, and what styling products to use can be overwhelming. According to Orlando hairstylist Mark Rodriguez, the best way to get what you want from a haircut experience is to speak up but be open to expert guidance.
Rodriguez started cutting hair in his family’s garage at 15 and has served as a professionally licensed cosmetologist for 15 years. Despite growing up in a barber shop, Rodriguez has found a home for his business in a full-service salon, where he creates custom looks for clients of all genders. He says he has noticed an increase in male clients in recent years and attributes that to the individual attention a stylist can provide.
“I get a lot of men that have gone to barber shops but feel like they just got whatever the barber wanted to give them,” Rodriguez says. “I feel
like stylists, compared to barbers, have more tools in the bag, so to speak.”
Additionally, Rodriguez says the salon setting has drawn more men’s favor lately.
“Yeah, it’s a different vibe. It’s not as intimate with the barber, you know?” he said. “Some people love being in the barbershop and talking about sports and cracking jokes across the room, but some people just like that one-on-one experience. They like getting shampooed, greeted personally, and offered wine or a beer, not someone just saying, ‘Who’s next?’ And the relationship – I follow up with my clients to see how their haircut’s working out, things like that.”
One blind spot for most men is the consultation stage of the haircut appointment. The best way to communicate what you’re looking for is to bring photo references and point out precisely what you like or dislike about them to your stylist. Along with keywords like texture and length, Rodriguez mentions another helpful term for getting a good short haircut.
“I always use the word ‘tapering’ because having the sideburns and the back of the hairline taper adds that special touch, making it look fresh.
And the grow-out is just so much nicer than having the sides heavy and one-length.”
Regarding products, Rodriguez says Bumble and Bumble’s Don’t Blow It Styling Cream is a one-sizefits-all option he recommends to his male clients. It can be used on damp or dry hair, straight or curly, to tame frizz and lightly hold shape without feeling sticky – just be sure to start small and add more product as needed.
Overall, the loosening of gender norms has allowed men to take pride in and genuinely enjoy their grooming experiences, partly because of the hairstylists on the ground educating the masses.
“Guys are more comfortable coming into a salon and not feeling like that’s a ‘woman’s place to go,’ they’re getting more comfortable using product and styling,” says Rodriguez. “And kudos to the hairstylists that are teaching them; that’s part of our job.”

Hurricane season returns on June 1 and continues until November 30, with peak activity occurring from August through October. Last year, Hurricanes Ian and Nicole swept through the state, causing widespread flooding and damage for millions of Floridians. Preparation for hurricane season is crucial and can differ depending on your location. You can find extensive hurricane preparation information on the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration website at https://www.noaa. gov/hurricane-prep. The following tips are beneficial for all Floridians.
Last year, the most extensive damage resulted from flooding when Hurricane Ian delivered nearly 20 inches of rain across the state. Evaluate your flood risk and plan accordingly. If your home is in a flood zone, consider evacuation. Sandbags and flood barriers are available from most major hardware stores— if the city isn’t already providing them for free. Address small roof or ceiling leaks before storm season, as these can quickly become huge problems once a storm begins. If you need to store your car, the City of Orlando offers free access to upper-level downtown parking garages during storms.
Areas of Central Florida experienced week-long power outages fol-
lowing Hurricane Ian due to underground flooded powerlines. Ensure that you have sufficient food stores and a non-electronic cooking method. Outdoor grills help cook almost anything, including canned foods –although, be sure to do this over hot coals and not open flames. Ensure all phones and devices are fully charged before storms so you don’t miss critical weather alerts. You should also consider a mobile charging unit if necessary.
Untrimmed tree branches broken off by strong winds can become flying projectiles or collapse onto power lines and property. Assess trees on your property and determine if they need trimming or removal. If the trees are hanging above power lines, contact your local power company, which will arrange for the trees to be trimmed free of charge. Reach out to them promptly, as tree-trimming companies often experience extended lead times once hurricane season commences.
Stock up on first-aid supplies, batteries, candles, medications, and non-perishable foods. The recommendation of one gallon of water per person daily can be daunting, especially when stores face shortages. Save yourself time and money by purchasing your resealable containers (such as large jars) and filling them with
filtered water immediately before a storm. This will not only keep you stocked and out of the stores but is also an economic and environmentally-conscious way to stay prepared for future hurricane seasons.

As the founder and Executive Director of One Heart for Women and Children, she has worked tirelessly to provide resources and support to struggling families in Orlando since 2007. Her organization offers assistance with food, clothing, hygiene items, educational support, and guidance to help families overcome homelessness and poverty.
Stephanie’s passion for helping others stems from her experiences with addiction, homelessness, and domestic violence. Having overcome these challenges, she understands many families’ struggles and has made it her mission to create positive change in her community.
Under Stephanie’s leadership, One Heart for Women and Children has expanded its efforts to include disaster relief and assistance during the COVID-19 pandemic. Vanessa Annabella Vincenti is a multi-media artist specializing in traditional dry-media illustrations. She grew up under the tutelage of her oil-painting father, Paul Vincenti, and gained experience working at outdoor art festivals, conventions, and gallery shows. In 2010, Vanessa’s group won the “Best Original Work” award at Disney’s Festival of the Masters.
Vanessa graduated from Valencia College with an associate degree in Fine/Studio Art and is currently pursuing her Illustration BFA at the Savannah College of Art and Design. She has showcased her artwork at the Orlando Museum of Art, City Arts Factory, Megacon Orlando, Orlando Fringe, and various local markets. About the Artist
I have always dabbled in art but never really stuck with anything other than sketching. During Covid Lockdown, though, I kept seeing trendy garden focaccia loaves and wanted to put my own spin on the concept since “experimenting in the kitchen” took the place of travel. I just kept practicing and figuring out what vegetables and herbs worked well and what didn’t. It was (and still is) a trial-anderror process, but I have enjoyed it.
What inspired your winning piece, and what message or emotions were you trying to convey?
I saw Van Gogh’s Vase with Twelve Sunflowers in Munich, and it brought me to tears. I couldn’t believe I was finally seeing one of my favorite pieces and was overwhelmed with joy. I couldn’t stop smiling. I decided to recreate it but in my own edible way. I wanted to push the boundaries of food art further to bring someone else that same kind of reaction. If looking at the bread made you smile or gave you even a tiny amount of happiness, I succeeded.
How does winning the Most Original Piece award in the 6th Annual Live Art Contest Showcase feel?
It’s unbelievable, considering I didn’t feel like I belonged in the same room with all the other artists. I looked around and thought, “Omg. I brought bread! I brought BREAD to an art show!” Winning gave me a new perspective on my abilities and silenced a good deal of self-doubt. I am incredibly grateful.

About The Artist
From a young age, I was captivated by the art of building pictures with stones. Growing up in northern New Jersey, surrounded by diverse mineral deposits, I would collect the most beautiful and colorful stones, dreaming of creating something remarkable one day.
It wasn’t until years later, after briefly exploring architecture with a degree from the University of Maryland in 1983, that I relocated to Santa Fe, New Mexico, a haven for artists. I finally realized my vision by combining my artistic eye with the cutting skills I honed during a 30-year career as a self-employed landscaper and stonemason.
What inspired your winning piece, and what message or emotions were you trying to convey?
After a move to Amelia Island, Florida, in 2017, my work - often described as playful and serene – spiritual even - transitioned from timeless Western images to fun coastal scenes such as the intricately cut and layered idyllic marsh piece. I make pretty pictures out of stone that make me smile inside and swell my heart with awe and emotion. Forever moments captured by forever materials. Because it’s those little moments, those peaceful, joyful, timeless moments passing all too quickly every day, that seems to be the very essence of life.
How does winning the Fan Favorite award in the 6th Annual Live Art Contest Showcase feel?
Fellow artists are great to talk to and learn from. I never see them as competitors – for we are all passionate about whatever form of artistic expression we choose, and we are our worst critics in the pursuit of producing our best work. Receiving the Fan Favorite award meant a lot to me – and getting votes from some of the other outstanding artists made it that much better.
Title of Artwork: The Watchmaker’s Daughter
Beginning his artistic journey in college, Dee DeLoy first honed his skills in the unconventional setting of Disney’s Contemporary Hotel, sketching caricatures in the mid-70s. Despite having to draw very quickly for low pay, he learned the art of caricature and eventually fabrication of sets for EPCOT during his tenure at Disney. He later used these skills to start his freelance art business, Newstart Art.
Complementing his real-world experience, DeLoy pursued a formal Graphic Design and Illustration education at Florida Technological University (now UCF). He spent the early years of his career in graphic design, but his passion for illustration and cartooning led him to seek opportunities that allowed him to make people laugh.
DeLoy explained how his big break came after a plastics company in New York asked him to draw caricatures at the Fountainbleu Hotel in Miami for the American Banking Association’s Bank Card convention. Following the job, he had a successful career in caricaturing for large companies. He also pursued another technique called paper sculpture which, in time, garnered many awards.
“For the next 10 years, I was blessed to win many awards for my paper sculptures, two of which I created for the Roy and Walt Disney rooms on Disney’s cruise boat, the Wonder,” DeLoy said. “I have been very grateful to use my talent in many different forms: murals, children’s books,
paper sculpture, Illustrating, graphic recording and caricaturing.”
Fast forward to August 2022, a best-selling author commissioned DeLoy to create artwork for his book, “The Watchmaker’s Daughter,” a narrative about Corrie Ten Boom, a WWII heroine who, along with her family, saved over 800 Jews from the Nazis by concealing them within the walls of their home. He was thrilled yet anxious to portray the courage, faith, sacrifice, love, and forgiveness exemplified by Corrie and her father, Casper, who taught Corrie watchmaking from the time she was 10 years old.
“In this artwork, I wanted to show the love between daughter and father and their closeness in the business. Of course, other aspects in the art point to Corrie and Casper’s courage to shelter and hide many Jews from the terror of the Nazis, “DeLoy said.
His inspiration came from an 1899 etching that hung in the Ten Boom’s watchmaker shop. The etching depicted a man fixing a watch with a young girl observing him. So, DeLoy researched Corrie, her father Casper, their watchmaking shop, and their house using various online resources to achieve authenticity. He shared that his biggest challenge was representing their eyes looking downward without them appearing asleep, so he used photos of his own eyes as a reference. He also photographed a local pastor and his wife modeling Casper and Corrie and enlisted an older
neighbor since the pastor’s hands were a bit too large. The art was created entirely by hand, without any digital input.
DeLoy shared how a poignant moment in the creative process occurred late one night when he, attempting to fill a shadowy space with watches under Casper’s workbench, felt an epiphany.
“I did not hear anything audibly but knew it was my Lord’s voice. And suddenly, I began to weep because He said, ‘These aren’t watches in the shadows, Dee… they are the faces of the many Jews hidden from the Nazis within the small, dark, cramped walls of Corrie’s room.’ So I drew the watches with that in mind hoping I could illustrate a real part of these precious people’s lives as they tried to survive this horrible time in world history.”
The creation of The Watchmaker’s Daughter required tenacity and constant motivation. DeLoy said frequent stepbacks were essential to assess the overall composition and tonal balance. In the end, careful inking techniques, consistent use of photo references, and meticulous touch-ups helped bring the final piece together.
His journey to winning the “Best of Show” award at the 6th annual art contest was unexpected, humbling, and deeply meaningful.
DeLoy was thrilled and humbled to be a finalist. He enjoyed discussing his artwork and its impactful story at the showcase event. Speaking with attendees, judges, and the COO of the company provided an enriching experience that went beyond any expectations of winning.
“When I had the opportunity to talk to people walking by looking at my art, I was in heaven. I love talking about things that have meaning, and Corrie’s story was one of the best. I had a great time talking to our judges, telling
them the stories of the Ten Booms and how I put various items in the illustration representing things that were part of their lives,” DeLoy said. “Stephanie teared up, which got me choked up too, and we were steadying each other as we both marveled over this woman’s courage. The talks with Vanessa and Juliana were just about as emotional. I was happy they were moved by what they saw, but I never thought I would be chosen.”
As DeLoy’s name resonated through the room, proclaiming him the winner, he experienced a profound mix of astonishment and heartfelt emotion. While he cherished recognition, he greatly appreciated his work’s impact on others. Thus, the judges’ choice humbled him amidst a talent-filled room.
“As much as exposure and promotion are important to every artist I know, this honor is much more than those
things to me. In a little over a month, without me doing anything but just showing up, this artwork was requested by the curator of the Corrie ten Boom Museum (her actual house) in Haarlem, Holland, and now is framed and hung in that same house. Then I was blessed with this great award,” DeLoy said. “I feel something much bigger than advertising “me” may be in God’s plan for the message in this art. I couldn’t be more excited about that! I want to thank everyone at the magazine, the judges, my supportive brother and friends who came, and especially my Heavenly Father, who, without His guidance and grace, I wouldn’t be talking to you today.”
DeLoy’s experience showed how art can evoke intense emotions and prompts deep introspection. He attributes his Best of Show award to his ability to explain his techniques and the deep, historical, and humanitarian story he conveyed about Corrie Ten Boom’s life.
“Art can pull people together for a common cause or divide others into camps of their own opinions. Art is a powerful tool to reach down inside the human heart and find joy, belief, persuasion, perseverance and to activate people into action,” he said.
DeLoy advises aspirants to “draw a lot, understand their gifts, and learn how to use them confidently.” He believes improvement comes with extensive practice. “A joyful heart and strong determination are crucial in the authentic and successful creation of a piece of art. Showcasing final art is good, but revealing the development stages of the work on social media, with brief explanations of techniques, also intrigues people.”

Our class aims to empower youth with the necessary knowledge and tools to navigate the world of personal finance successfully. By instilling financial literacy at an early age, we are investing in the long-term financial well-being of our young people and fostering a brighter future.
Habitat Orlando & Osceola’s first youth financial literacy class is June 10 at 1 p.m. at Amazing Church Florida in Kissimmee.
Attendees will learn the following:
■ The importance of budgeting — Budgeting lies at the heart of financial literacy. The class will emphasize the value of budgeting and provide practical tools and techniques for creating and maintaining effective budgets. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of income management, expense tracking, and the importance of allocating funds to reach different financial goals.
■ Navigating student loans — As high schoolers pursue higher education, it’s critical to understand the complexities of student loans. The class will provide valuable insights into different types of student loans, repayment options, and strategies for managing debt.

Afew short decades ago, a dad’s place in the home was to work and make the financial means to run the household. They only sometimes had to think about washing clothes, cleaning pots and pans, or taking the children back and forth to school and after-school activities. Present day, it is different, especially in a single-dad household.
Before daybreak, and sometimes before the alarm goes off, Jonathon Goff is already up and busily preparing for the day for himself and his three children. Preparing breakfast, giving homework a final glance, signing notes, and ensuring school books are safely put into backpacks before heading out for work and school is a typical routine for the Goff household.
Over the last six years, Jonathon has been a single dad of three happy and active children, Alleigh, Easton, and Mason. He manages a lawn and landscaping business, which demands much of his time, but only as much time as he gives his children.
When asked what the most timeconsuming part of being a “bachelor dad” is, with thoughtfulness, he explained, “Scheduling, I would say, is the hardest part of being a single dad. All three of my kids are involved with extracurricular activities. It takes a lot of planning to make sure everyone is where they need to be and that I will be able to be there with them.” He also hinted that laundry would “hit
the top of the list” as being another time-consuming task.
Jonathon is blessed to have a family support system. He counts on his parents, Wayne and Tracie Goff, and his brother and sister-in-law for support when he is unavailable. As a business owner, he can sometimes be flexible and adjust his schedule as needed.
Jonathon admits that it is hard being a single dad, and it is something that he never expected or wanted. “I didn’t want my family broken; sometimes, things get out of your control.”
Considering what is best for the children while ensuring he agrees with his former wife, the mother of his children is a delicate balance. It is something he takes very seriously. Jonathon continues, “I believe you should keep your children active in the community. Sometimes, keeping up with the schedule can be difficult, but it’s worth it.”
The single father contemplated how he chooses activities for their leisure time to create memorable moments together. Making fun and lasting memories plays a significant role in his decision-making process. Hunting is one of their favorite pastimes.
“We go hunting and enjoy outdoor activities,” he says. “We look forward to our Smoky Mountain summer vacation each year. That is a special time for us.”
Another favorite fun family time together is going to Mi Casa, a local eatery in Plant City. “We go every
week without fail,” Jonathon explains. Alleigh, Jonathon’s daughter, and his youngest son Mason enjoy showing cattle. Easton, the middle son, enjoys playing baseball with the traveling baseball team, the North Brandon Navigators. “We travel around the surrounding counties on weekends for him to play in tournaments.”

Vacation is a time to forget your troubles and let loose, but you should always pay attention to your surroundings to avoid human trafficking schemes.
Florida ranks third in human trafficking cases, according to Osceola County’s Sheriff’s Office. The three types of human trafficking to avoid are sex trafficking, forced labor, and domestic servitude. The most common places for trafficking in the state are tourist hubs like Orlando, Miami, and Tampa.
Human Trafficking Search put out a report in 2021 linking trafficking in the tourism sector and advises that big hubs for tourism should take steps and make institutional changes to protect tourists.
Florida mandates that hospitality staff receive education in anti-human trafficking awareness and intervention training. On May 16, Gov. Ron DeSantis signed legislation to combat human trafficking. One of the bills, SB 1690, goes against hotels that ignore state anti-trafficking laws and would fine hotels that neglect to train staff to recognize trafficking signs.
The report also states that bystanders and victims are more likely to report human trafficking when hotels hang up and display human trafficking awareness posters, hotlines, text lines, and apps. To ensure safety, stay vigilant and know what signs to look out for while on vacation.
A critical factor in avoiding trafficking is being aware of one’s surroundings. A potential trafficker may want to isolate or come on strongly to an intended victim, according to the United States Drug Enforcement Administration.
It would help to practice caution when driving a rental car or car with out-of-state plates. While not knowingly linked with trafficking, a trending TikTok had a young woman show a big van parked close to her car in a parking lot, only for it to drive off after she had an employee escort her to her vehicle.
Women make up 71% of trafficking victims, with men and boys at 29%, according to Human Trafficking Search. While women are more at risk, men and boys should watch out for sex and labor trafficking as well. Bandak Lul, a program specialist with the Office of Attorney General of Texas Human Trafficking and Transnational Organized Crime, discussed male victims with the Human Trafficking Capacity Building Center ‘Ask an Expert’ webinar.
Lul said trafficking services are female-centric, and there should be no difference in prevention, victimization, and support between male and female victims.
If you vacation with family or friends, stay close to them while exploring new areas. People are more vulnerable to trafficking if they are alone, according to Human Trafficking Search. If you need to separate from your party, charge your phone and establish a meet-up plan.
If you plan on drinking on vacation, make sure you have a plan. Try to have one designated sober person in the group. Do not try to walk to your hotel or Airbnb if intoxicated, and do not drink alone.
Airports are big hubs for human trafficking, according to Human Trafficking Awareness Resources. Be aware of where your gate is, have your ID on you, and watch for security. If traveling alone, keep family and friends updated. It is essential not to be too paranoid while still looking out for yourself. Stay safe, relax, and pay attention to your surroundings.

By Tarre BeachLast year the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) decided not to list the gopher tortoise as federally threatened or endangered in nearly all Southern states where they reside, upsetting many in the wildlife conservation community. Only a tiny area—26,740 acres west of the Mobile and Tombigbee Rivers in Alabama— federally lists the species as threatened. This action prompted the Center for Biological Diversity (CBD) and Nokuse Education to file a notice of intent to sue the USFWS in March of this year. According to CBD, the reptiles have lost 97% of the longleaf pine savannas in the Southern United States, where they have lived for millions of years.
The primary threat to the gopher tortoise is habitat loss due to land development. The urban sprawl of Central Florida, in particular, is seeing more houses built in the same high, dry habitats that the tortoise prefers. By some estimates, the gopher tortoise can lose nearly all of its Southern habitat in the next 80 years. And while the reptile is not listed federally as endangered or threatened, many southern states, including Florida, have listed it as such.
The ancient animal’s best chance for survival until the lawsuit’s resolution hinges on human assistance. Florida’s Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) offers excellent information on how essential go-
pher tortoises are to Florida’s land and its people and how you can help these gentle creatures.
The gopher tortoise is essential to Florida’s ecological community because of its feeding patterns and burrowing activity. Their burrows, extending 30 feet underground, also support roughly 360 other species. Animals such as burrowing owls, mice, indigo snakes, rabbits, gopher frogs, and other invertebrates use active or abandoned gopher tortoise burrows. In the wild, gopher tortoises live about 40 years. They spread seeds and spores for many native plants, trees, and fungi needed to maintain Florida’s natural ecosystems. Gopher tortoises are also considered critical to the calcium cycle of our soil. Fewer gopher tortoises could mean lower nutrients in the dirt, an increase in land erosion, and a decrease in water filtration.
Florida law prohibits anyone from killing or wounding a gopher tortoise. Violating the law is a thirddegree felony and is punishable by up to five years in prison, a $5,000 fine, or both. It is illegal to take tortoises, which includes harm, harassment, capture, possession, selling, transporting, or damaging a burrow (including both tortoises and their eggs).
If gopher tortoise burrows are on your property, you may need a burrow survey or permit to do extensive digging or development. While the FWC staff does not relocate tortoises for private citizens, developers, or governments, it licenses authorized gopher tortoise agents who specialize in safely capturing, marking, and relocating them.
For regular yard maintenance and landscaping, all landowners must do is avoid burrows and tortoises by at least 25 feet.
Here are some tips from FWC on how you can help Florida’s gopher tortoises:
■ If you see a tortoise on the road, feel free to help it continue its journey by moving it across in the direction it was heading. However, never compromise your safety for this task; remember not to take the tortoise with you.
■ Never put these terrestrial species in ditches or water, including canals, creeks, ponds, rivers, etc.
■ If you see a sick or injured tortoise, call the FWC regional office for the Central Florida area at (352) 732-1225.
■ Report wildlife law violations to the FWC’s Wildlife Alert 24-hour, state-wide hotline 888-404-3922.
