+ LETTER From the Associate Publisher

Mental Health is Health I suffer from anxiety and depression. And I take medication to treat it. I have not told anyone this except my husband – and my therapist. Until now. Why? Because I’ve felt embarrassed and ashamed. But as a woman in this industry, I feel empowered to help end the stigma related to mental health by talking about it in this issue – our special women’s issue – dedicated to mothers, grandmothers, sisters and aunts; stay-at-home moms, working moms, single moms and foster moms; full-time caretakers, volunteers, doctors, first responders; and so many more of the women in our community making a difference and inspiring us all. In honor of Mental Health Awareness Month, in this issue you will find a feature on its importance, and where you can turn to for help, or for more information (page 6). In this issue, we’ve partnered with AdventHealth for Women to highlight the stories of eight amazing local women while sharing important facts about women’s health (page 18). They have a passion for helping others without asking for help for themselves. They work to make a difference in the lives of their neighbors and their families. They are the Women Next Door. This issue also spotlights Special Olympics Florida as it celebrates its 50th anniversary (page 38) and on page 50, get to know the Winter Park resident who just traveled to space, and how she created a nonprofit to inspire students, especially young girls, to excel in STEAM+ education. On page 26, we highlight One Heart for Women and Children, as this nonprofit focused on providing necessary resources for struggling families as they transition through and overcome their own hardships, as it celebrates 15 years of service to the Central Florida community. All month long we’ll be celebrating the amazing women of our community on www.CentralFloridaLifestyle.com and our social media channels. Share with us your stories about the women who have influenced your life!

Mental Health Matters

Learn what you can do to help yourself and others by looking for warning signs, making mental health care a priority, and finding help if you need it. By Tarre Beach

M

ay is Mental Health Awareness Month. It was first celebrated as Mental Health Week in 1949 and created by former mental health patient Clifford W. Beers, who many refer to as “the founder of the American mental health movement.” This month offers each of us an opportunity to increase the awareness of mental health and wellness for ourselves and others. It’s also a wonderful time to celebrate the successes on the road to mental health.

Ending the Stigma

While mental illness is not judged the same way it was in the early part of the 20th century, social exclusion and prejudices toward the mentally ill haven’t completely gone by the wayside, says Jamie Gunning, licensed marriage and family therapist and owner of SoulCare in Orlando. According to Gunning, the American spirit of independence and the “pull yourself up by your bootstraps” ideal continues to fuel many negative stereotypes associated with mental illness. “There’s a stigma that having a mental illness is a sign of weakness. Yet we don’t put that same kind of shame on someone who has type 1 diabetes

6

Central Florida Lifestyle | May 2022

or cancer,” Gunning says. “It’s getting better, but we still have some work to do to make mental illness a less emotionally charged issue and mental health care simply a part of our overall well being.” Joseph Noecker, licensed mental health counselor and founder of Center for Self Balance in Winter Park says that mental health should be important to everyone because anyone can experience a mental health issue, if not a mental illness. “We perceive everything in our lives through our minds. So even if everything is going right in your life, if your mental health is out of balance, you can interpret your experience as ‘negative.’ This can affect your relationships, your work, and your physical health. And it goes beyond that. Our individual mental health contributes to the collective mental health and wellbeing of our community and world as a whole,” Noecker says.

Talk About It

Gunning says she’s happy to see young people making mental health a priority. “Gen Zers like to have a therapist to check in with every once in a while. Maybe it’s because their role models—athletes, musicians, actors

and actresses, and social media influencers are more open about their own mental health.” Regardless of their age, many people find talking about how they’re feeling difficult. That may be because they aren’t sure how they are feeling. Mental Health America (MHA) suggests finding a trusting and sympathetic friend or family member to share how you’re feeling as a first step. It can reduce stress and help identify feelings. Making an appointment with a primary care physician is also a good place to start. He or she can provide appropriate mental health care resources. Neither Noecker nor Gunning are medication prescribing practitioners, but they both say many mental health treatment models, including those that employ medication, also incorporate talk therapy and/or behavioral therapy. Noecker is in favor of normalizing talking about mental health and mental illness. However, he doesn’t like the casual use of diagnostic language for complex feelings. He feels medical terms such as PTSD or bipolar for example can be overused. “I think society can use medical terminology as a kind of shorthand

PROMOTION OF EMOTIONS Check out these tips on promoting Mental Health Awareness Month.

FOR YOURSELF: n Focus on self-compassion over selfimprovement n Set and keep your boundaries

that doesn’t support a real understanding of these mental health issues. It may unknowingly trivialize these mental health issues instead,” Noecker says.

Triggers and Warning Signs

Just like with physical health, stress can trigger mental health issues. Both a depth psychology and rational emotive behavior therapy (REBT) psychoanalyst, Noecker suggests practicing a specific style of mindful breathing to temporarily relieve the emotional/mental effects of stress. “Try tickling the palm of your hand while you breathe in and out. Then switch back and forth to focus on the sensations of your hand and the sensations of breathing. Mindful breathing helps your body relax, slowing the body’s stress response. And the added simple external stimuli of tickling your palm can help you get out of your thoughts about the past or future and ground you in the present,” Noecker says. Gunning says she looks for subtle clues to tell her if a client is having a mental health issue. She watches out for clients saying they feel like they’re letting everyone down or that they don’t matter. “They may not have suicidal thoughts,” Gunning says “But they may have passive ideation. Thoughts like ‘It would be OK if I don’t wake up.’ or ‘I wish I wasn’t here anymore.’ They’re not actively trying to make those things happen, but it’s a warning sign to me that those ideas are floating around and may be comforting to them in some way.” The National Alliance for Mental Illness (NAMI) shares a few questions to help determine if there are any warning signs that your mental health needs attention:

n Are you avoiding responsibilities? n Are you no longer interested in doing the things you used to enjoy doing? n Are you isolating or turning down invitations to do things with others? n Are you getting enough quality sleep? n Are you sleeping too much? n Are you over-indulging in alcohol, food, and/or recreational drugs, shopping/spending or seeking out more sexual gratification than you normally do?

Celebrate Recovery

Too often the negative aspects of mental illness are the ones we take notice of. But recovery or remission of a serious mental illness (SMI) such as depression, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia is possible. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Administration for Community Living, 58% of 33 – 65-year-olds reported being in recovery from a SMI. NAMI reports that 65% of people living with a SMI experience a partial to full recovery over time. A common condition associated with mental illness is substance abuse disorder. The Recovery Research Institute says that one in ten Americans report having resolved a significant substance or alcohol problem. There is hope for mental illness. The first step is being aware. The next is getting help. If you or someone you know is struggling with mental health issues, use the free resources provided to find help.

How to Master the Art of the Charcuterie Board By Maya James

C

harcuterie boards, named after French charcuteries or butcher shops where cold cooked meats are prepared and sold, serve as an upscale appetizer or even a tasty hors d’oeuvre. While they may seem daunting due to the seemingly endless combinations of meats and cheeses, they’re incredibly simple to master.

Choose Your Toppings

Start with breaking down the process into steps — what do you want on your charcuterie board? Do you want to have a plethora of fruits, cheeses, and vegetables with a small portion of meat? Do you want to do a full Italian spread and do a charcuterie board in the form of an antipasto platter complete with pepperoni, salami, pick-

led peppers, and fresh tomato? Do you want to include honey, or maybe even jam? The possibilities are endless, but the best part of a charcuterie board is that they’re composed of all the yummy things you like, so feel free to add ingredients to your heart’s content.

Where to Find Good Charcuterie Board Ingredients

After deciding what to put on your charcuterie board comes the best part – sourcing your ingredients. Your local deli or butchery is sure to have an amazing selection of cold cuts that are perfect for your charcuterie board. Even grocery store chains have a great selection of cheeses and meats at the deli section for gathering all necessary ingredients without breaking the bank.

The Arrangement

The rule of thumb is to group each ingredient in pairs that are of similar type. Meats of all types go together in any arrangement you see fit – alternate colors or be as creative as you’d like. Bread such as pita or crostini goes with crackers. Honey and jam go together as well; you can even take it a step further and put them in decorative jars or containers on the board. Now, you’re a charcuterie master. Get out there and enjoy!

Reverse Mortgages:

All You Need to Know Learn how Reverse Mortgages work and how you can refinance the home to pay off the balance owed. By Kristen Jackson, Jackson Law P.A.

Q:

A:

How do Reverse Mortgages work and what must I do to force the company to provide me the balance owed? For 12 years my family and I lived in my parents’ home, caring for them until their deaths. My father, at 92 years old, was last to die. Eighteen months prior to his death I invited my younger sister to move in with us to help care for Dad because I was being assigned by my firm to its North Dakota branch which removed me from Florida for over a year. During my absence, my sister, without our knowing, took Dad to an attorney to prepare a last will naming me as executor and herself as sole beneficiary of all his assets other than Dad’s home and its contents. Subsequently, she assisted Dad in securing a Reverse Mortgage on his home whereby he received a lump sum of $250,000. She deposited the money in a joint account in both my Dad’s and her names. Following the funeral, the bank account was closed by my sister, and I have not seen her since. Meanwhile, I am left with a mortgage on the family home owing $250,000. This has been the family home for more than 45 years with a current value of $526,000. Regardless of my sister’s actions, I do not wish to give up on the family home, but the mortgage company will not allow me to continue payments. I have heard a lot of troubling things about Reverse Mortgages and am worried I can lose the home. No mortgage company is required to speak to anyone other than the person who signs the mortgage. Understanding probate, most Reverse Mortgage companies will continue a dialogue with family members following someone’s death. To guarantee dialog, you must file probate. Named as the executor in your father’s will, by filing probate, the court will grant you the authority to take over the obligations of your father. Once appointed legally by the court, the mortgage company will notify you of the amount owed on the loan. Unless you have the

cash to pay off the loan you will have to refinance the home with a Traditional loan. Reverse Mortgages are available to seniors 62 years of age or older. Responsibility of paying off the loan is no different than paying off any type of mortgage. The primary difference between a Traditional Mortgage and a Reverse Mortgage is that a Traditional Mortgage requires you to pay back the loan monthly whereas with a Reverse Mortgage, repayment generally occurs within one year after you move out of the property or when you die. In

other words, when your dad died, the entire mortgage amount became due and family members wishing to save the home must pay the entire amount of the outstanding mortgage. If they have insufficient funds, but wish to keep the property, after it is retitled into another’s name through probate, they will need to refinance the Reverse Mortgage to pay it off. Be aware, however, it is best to act quickly because interest accrues the entire time the loan remains outstanding so the balance keeps rising during this time.

The performing arts isn’t just a way to be creative, it’s a way to see another person’s point of view. It’s a way to gain self-confidence and change the world. By Tarre Beach

T

heater is more than just being entertained. For two W. Daniel Mills apprentices, being a part of performing arts has helped them in their lives beyond the stage. Alison Diaz is a 20-year-old Southeastern University student who lives in Davenport. She explains that she grew up very shy. Even though Diaz comes from a musical family and took dance classes, it wasn’t until she started participating in theater, that she began to feel her self-confidence grow. Part of what helped her overcome her shyness was acting in a local production of Rodger’s and Hammerstein’s “Cinderella.” “I love princesses,” she says. “Their stories are so comforting because they often show how a young girl learns something about herself and overcomes the odds. In the end things work out, too. There’s always a happy ending.” While her college doesn’t have a drama program, Diaz is a member of Southeastern’s Soul Food Creative Company, a performing arts group on campus. The group’s mission is to combine ministry and theater to give Christian students a way to share their faith and creativity. Currently, as part of the apprenticeship program, Diaz is following

the directing track and will be the apprentice director of “Beauty and the Beast” (April 22-May 22) under Roberta Emerson. She says being a director is teaching her how to be more decisive and a better leader. “I think having played different characters in plays has helped me step out of my own self-doubt and feel more sure of my choices. Also, having such great support from Garden Theatre Artistic Director Joe Walsh and the whole team at the Garden Theatre has been amazing,” Diaz says. Madison Poston says she’s been singing since she could open her mouth. Now a junior at Montverde Academy, Poston is excited to be adding more singing, acting, and dancing to her résumé. Raised by her dad, who is a percussionist and a part of a family full of singers, dancers and musicians, Poston says she’s always felt like performing was the place she could best express herself. According to Poston, being an actor has taught her to see things differently. Not too long ago, she played Mal Beineke in the Garden Theatre’s musical production of “The Addams Family.” “Mal is a male character so I was surprised I could even be considered for the part,” Poston says. “But that’s

Madison Poston

what I love about theater and the performing arts, it’s for everyone. You can be anything. You can be the opposite sex, or a monster, or a mermaid. It really is so rewarding to look beyond your own physical limits.” Recently, Poston participated in the Garden Theatre’s production of “Parade,” a musical dramatization of the 1913 trial, imprisonment, and eventual lynching of Leo Frank. She says it is startling to watch a play with such beautiful music about such a terrible moment in history. But that is part of what attracts Poston to the performing arts. “Theater is a mirror,” Poston says. “It reflects back the world around you—both the good and the bad. And hopefully once you see what’s going on you want to get involved.” Next up for Poston is completing the apprenticeship and applying to colleges. She says she hopes to continue her performing arts education at the University of Central Florida, University of North Carolina School of Arts, or Boston University. “I feel like art is the greatest way to express yourself,” Poston says. “I can’t imagine what I’d do if I wasn’t doing this. I know whatever it is, it wouldn’t be nearly as important. Making art is my purpose.”

Best Beaches an Hour or Less Away From Central Florida By Maya James

W

ith spring semester about to end for children and students alike, many will be flocking to the beach in true Floridian fashion. While Central Florida itself isn’t sitting next to the shore, several great beaches are within an hour’s drive. Take a peek at this list to see your options for your future beach day this summer.

1. Lake Sybelia Beach Park

Sitting right on the shore of Lake Sybelia, this beach park is located in Maitland and is only a few streets down from Art & History Museums of Maitland, a museum peppered with historical buildings and an outdoor garden. With mild waters and clean, quiet surroundings, this beach park makes it easy for those in Central Florida to enjoy a beach day right in their own backyards. As a public lake, watersports such as boating and jet skiing are encouraged.

2. New Smyrna Beach

New Smyrna Beach can be considered Daytona’s slightly underrated sister. Sitting just north of Daytona, New Smyrna contains many beaches all around the coast of the city such as Flagler Beach, Tybee Beach Pier or

16

Central Florida Lifestyle | May 2022

Edisto Beach State Park. Along with beaches, the city itself has a robust downtown area with an area called Canal Street where one can find cafés, restaurants, art galleries and shops.

3. Wilbur Beach

Those from St. Port Orange will already know about this beautiful beach complete with always-appreciated free parking and showers. With the soft, white sand and clean surroundings thanks to the many trash cans and recycling bins on the beach, Wilbur Beach will always make for a great beach day experience. The wooden boardwalk will take you right down to the shimmering shoreline.

4. Cocoa Beach

Just like New Smyrna Beach, Cocoa Beach is a city containing a number of beaches and surf attractions. Westgate Cocoa Beach Pier and Cocoa Beach Pier provide a look over the vast, blue ocean with plenty of lunchtime options in the form of restaurants and vendors. As a city with close relations to the nearby space centers – Cocoa Beach is only 14 miles away from the Kennedy

Space Center Visitor Complex – you can hop on a bus or drive to the center and switch from fun in the sun to a tour that’s simply out of this world.

5. Lakefront Beach

While called a “beach,” Lakefront Beach is actually the site of a Lakefront Park sitting right on the shores of East Lake Tohopekaliga. Central Floridians will be happy to learn that visiting this beach requires only a 45 minute drive to St. Cloud and is complete with a pier for boats and pavilions for picnics or even catching some shade from the sun. As a matter of fact, you can do whatever your heart desires here: go swimming, go surfing, sail a boat, walk a dog, hold a picnic or even just have a relaxing stroll. Seafood restaurants are sprinkled throughout the park for an easy and accessible lunch, and there’s a small splash zone for children.

Have you drawn inspiration from other women? Tell us about someone who has inspired you. My mom and my grandmother have always been my biggest inspirations (and my dad!). My boss, Courtney Holt has had the biggest influence on my professional life. I saw the amount of respect everyone had for her at my first event and realized she was from whom I wanted to learn. I’ve worked with her since 2010 and we have an amazing relationship. I’m thankful for her mentorship and I couldn’t find a better person to learn from.

Have you drawn inspiration from other women? Tell us about someone who has inspired you. One of the very first women who inspired me was my Grandmother, Madelaine. As a child I was surrounded by strong women. I emulated everything she was. I thought as a child all women are strong, outspoken, smart and brave. That’s why it is so important to be surrounded by positive role models like I was. I know if it was not for her and my mother, I would not know without a doubt that women stand up for what they believe in, women are to be respected, women should be confident in who they are and women can change this world. What are you most proud of? I am most proud of my family. Successes of today may fade, but the love and kindness you pour into your family and your children will resonate for generations. Raising three boys and watching them make good choices and be a positive impact to those around them makes me incredibly proud. Also working with my brothers and my father for the past 15 years and growing Grafton Wealth Management to what it is today makes me incredibly proud.

What is the biggest challenge you have faced and what did you learn from it? Time! As women, many of us try to do it all. I would love to say yes to every charity. I would love to say yes to every prospective client. I would love to say yes to every field trip, birthday party, etc. We simply cannot. It took me a long time to learn how to say no and embrace yes all at the same time. You have to balance your calendar to reflect your personal priorities. If your health is number one then it should take up the most time on your calendar. If relationships or faith are number one then those should be reflected that way in your schedule!

Would you change anything about how you have handled challenges or successes thus far in your life? Absolutely! I believe there are lessons to be learned in everything we do, in the areas that did not go as planned, and also in places that were executed well. I can be my worst critic, but I believe it makes me a more compassionate and resilient leader.

TAMARA KNIGHT PHOTOGRAPHY

What are you most proud of? I have had mentors guiding and coaching me throughout my career, and it has always been important to me to pay it forward. I believe that one of my roles as a leader is to also encourage, coach, guide and listen to young people, especially young women. I have felt it was important to dedicate time to mentoring. I find that often young people just need a little encouragement and someone that believes in their abilities. I feel that if I can touch just one person and make a difference in their life – it brings me joy.

What is your WHY? Ever since I was in kindergarten and answered the question “What do you want to be when you grow up? “I always wanted to have a career in healthcare – it started as a pediatrician. In high school, I participated in a program through Orange County Public Schools that intends for students to get an early start on career paths, where I was able to spend time shadowing a local pediatrician and that solidified for me that I was headed in the right direction. Throughout college I worked in a primary care physician’s office and after college, while I was working on my MBA my passion continued as I interned at AdventHealth (formerly known as Florida Hospital). I have a passion to help people, especially those struggling with health issues, and I have spent the last 22 years serving the Central Florida Community.

You’ve Got This: The quick guide to women’s health topics

Regular screenings and open communication with your provider are essential for maintaining your overall health. Working with your doctor on a customized care plan can help you stay well and create personalized treatment options. Annual Well-Woman Exam

It’s important for women to come in every year for their well-woman check-up because it creates the opportunity for you to have an open dialogue with your doctor about overall health. During the well-woman exam, your provider may perform a clinical breast exam, a pelvic examination and a Pap smear. Additional testing may be suggested. If you’ve had a hysterectomy, it's still recommended that you have a pelvic exam every 3 to 5 years, even if you’ve never had an abnormal result. 22

Central Florida Lifestyle | May 2022

Colorectal Screening

Colorectal screening is used to determine the presence of any cancerous or precancerous cells in your lower digestive tract. It generally involves a colonoscopy of one type or another and the use of sedatives to make you comfortable during the process. Colorectal screening should begin at age 45.

Incontinence

BRADY GIN PHOTOGRAPHY

From childbirth to aging, incontinence can affect women at any age. If you leak when you laugh, sneeze or cough, or find yourself running to the restroom to make it in time, please discuss these symptoms with your doctor. The AdventHealth Pelvic Health Program offers a variety of treatment options, including pelvic floor therapy that may be able to help.

Infertility

If you’re trying to conceive, when should you be worried about infertility? Healthy women with no underlying conditions have a 20% chance of conceiving every month with an 85 to 90% chance of conceiving within a year. If, after 12 months, a woman is still having difficulty conceiving, talk with your provider.

Mammogram

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) recommends beginning mammograms between 40 and 49. Women with an average risk for developing breast cancer should follow up with screening mammograms every one to two years after that. Risk factors that could influence your mammogram recommendations include family history, a BRCA gene mutation, early or late menopause, dense breasts, and more.

Menstrual Cycles

Periods that last longer than seven days or cycles that are more frequent than every 21 days should be discussed with your provider. In addition to heavy bleeding, some women have painful periods. If you have painful periods that are not relieved by ibuprofen or similar medications, your gynecologist is trained to evaluate this and offer treatment options.

Pap Testing and HPV

Pap testing starts at age 21 and occurs every 3 years until age 30, then it changes to every 5 years. Pap testing involves looking under a microscope and checking for HPV (human papillomavirus). Certain HPV strains have been linked to an increased risk of cervical cancer.

What is the biggest challenge you have faced and what did you learn from it? Our biggest challenge was 2020 and the pandemic. Being an in-person event company, we were so scared. Scared about the future of our brand, scared about how we could continue and not have to let go of any of our employees. Both of us cried like babies but we picked ourselves up and knew we had to do anything and everything in our power to thrive. We learned so much, we learned that you could still host an amazing event, even if it was on a virtual level. We were the first of our kind to successfully host virtual events for moms and families to tune in from all over the world. On your toughest of days, what motivates you to put one foot in front of the other? Some days are long, some are long and tough. Our motivation has always been to show our kids that you can do anything. Even when you think you have nothing to offer the world, you

produce an idea over spaghetti dinner that in the end turns into a powerful brand that brings people together. Our kids have always motivated us both to be our best and continue to be our driving force. They were there from the inception of Prego Expo and continue to be our biggest cheerleaders. What is the one word that perfectly explains who you are? Since there are two of us, we would say we are Perfectly Imperfect. These two words also describe the journey most parents feel and they need to know that it’s OK! No journey is ever going to be perfect as soon as we realize this, we can really start enjoying our lives.

Susan is also very active in the community. She has served on the Board of Governors at The Helen Keller National Center; Chairman of the Board at Lighthouse Central Florida and Board Member of The Florida Hospital CHIC Board and more. For her efforts, Susan received the Walt Disney Community Service Award (two years) and Sertoman of the Year Award which recognizes exceptional contributions in the spirit of service to mankind. What is the biggest challenge you have faced and what did you learn from it? My first child was born both deaf and blind. Jake taught me everything. How to appreciate music, speech, the ability to see a sunset. I could go on for hours on this.

Would you change anything about how you have handled challenges or successes thus far in your life? Ohh gosh yes,I would have slowed down as a parent. I would have spent more time in the present and not looking ahead to the next big thing. On your toughest of days, what motivates you to put one foot in front of the other? I know that my life is the hand of the God who created the universe, so I can look to Him and keep going. Often I have to stop and write down all the things that have been given to me. The list is always so long that then..how can I be discouraged? My work motivation is to see the Scholars we support succeed at the highest level. Seeing them develop into amazing, thankful young women. What could be more fulfilling in life?

As a momma you pour your very being into your babies. To see them soar in life, help them with their battles and live their life to the fullest. The effort that a mother must place into her children is SELFLESS. I love them more than life itself. However, as all women know they grow up and we become their advocate. As I get older, it is even more important to me to be that example of love–caring and living with a compassionate spirit toward others that they will think about as they grow older. I pray more than anything they too will live with a spirit that impacts those around them, becoming difference makers in this world just like my own mother taught me.

On your toughest of days, what motivates you to put one foot in front of the other? These days are tough. This world is a hard place but what I have found is that serving & blessing others brings me so much joy. The recipe for curing any bad day for me is to go be a blessing to someone else. What can I do to help them win in life? How can I put a smile on their face? The recipe for dealing with your toughest day is to find the reward that comes in not what you receive but what impact comes from seeing someone smile. In my office, I have a sign that is a daily reminder of this very thing. It says ‘Always pray to have the eyes to see the best in people, a heart that forgives the worst, a mind that forgets the bad and a soul that NEVER loses faith in God’.

Demetria is also the author of Pearls for the Journey: A Guide to a More Fulfilling Life which offers ten pearls of wisdom to fuel your growth and development. She resides in Lake Nona with her family. On your toughest of days, what motivates you to put one foot in front of the other? On my toughest days, I am motivated to put one foot in front of the other by remembering to put things in perspective. No matter how difficult the challenge, obstacle, or pain, if I wake up and put my feet on the ground, I have an opportunity to make a difference and be better than I was the day before. That perspective keeps me motivated every day. What is the biggest challenge you have faced and what did you learn from it? The biggest challenge that I face has not fully manifested. I have ADPKD (Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease) which is the most common genetic kidney disorder. With ADPKD, your kidneys form cysts that ultimately take over the organ and cause it to fail. It is something I’ve known would become an issue for me at some point for thirty-plus years. I have now reached an age where problems will start. What I have learned from this experience and watching others in my family become transplant recipients is to FOCUS ON WHAT YOU CAN CONTROL. There is absolutely nothing I can do at this point to alter my DNA sequence. What I can control is how healthy I am in every other aspect of my life. I can control my mindset. I can control how I love those most important to me. When I focus on those things, I can face any challenges that may come in my future from this disease process.

Would you change anything about how you have handled challenges or successes thus far in your life? Hindsight is always 20/20. I don’t know if I would change anything because I may not learn the lessons I needed to learn. BUT, if I would change anything about how I approach all challenges or successes is to approach them with more empathy and grace. Empathy, so I am not too harsh or hard on myself or others. Grace, as a reminder that we all can be redeemed regardless of how big the blunder is.

for the Roses Kendall-Jackson serves up the perfect pairing for wine lovers on Derby Day. By Nicole Paskowsky

F

or all the Kentucky Derby and wine enthusiasts out there searching for the perfect beverage for this year’s race, don’t reach for the bourbon just yet. Whether you have a taste for white or red, KendallJackson recently unveiled a limitededition chardonnay and cabernet sauvignon to celebrate the annual Run of the Roses and a new multiyear partnership as the Derby’s preferred wine. These releases are just the first of many leading up to the Kentucky Derby’s milestone 150th-anniversary race in 2024. Balancing notes of warm vanilla with tropical fruit and citrus, the 2020 Mendocino County Chardonnay is bright, smooth, and complex with a velvety finish. This wine complements Derby menus filled with all-American staples, like fried chicken, hamburgers, and barbecue, as well as French cheeses, asparagus, and cream sauces. For Derby fans who love a robust red, the 2019 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon’s rich, seamless tannins taste of cedar, toast, and vanilla, finishing with a hint of mocha and scents of dark fruit, cocoa, and cas-

sis. It serves well with hearty menu items, like a juicy steak, grilled lamb, portobello mushrooms and cheesy polenta. Known for its top-rated Vintner’s Reserve Chardonnay, KendallJackson has been in the quality wine game since 1982. Yet although this winemaker hails from the rolling hills of California’s Sonoma County wine region, it isn’t new to the thrills of high-speed horse racing. The family-owned winery also operates Stonestreet Farm, a Thoroughbred horse breeding and training operation in the Bluegrass region of Lexington, Kentucky. “Our family’s legacy in winemaking runs deep, and while many wine enthusiasts across the nation recognize Kendall-Jackson as the maker of America's favorite chardonnay, our family's endeavors in the horse-racing world are lesser-known,” says Barbara Banke, chairman and proprietor of Jackson Family Wines and wife of the winery’s visionary founder, Jess Jackson. In 1938, Jackson sat on his uncle’s shoulders and watched Seabiscuit win the Bay Meadows Handicap.

That momentous event ignited a passion for horse racing that eventually led to the opening of Stonestreet Farm in 2005. The family winery continued to work its magic in a new arena, becoming one of the top breeders of Thoroughbred yearlings in the country—including the aptly named Good Magic, a Derby champion that finished second in the 2018 race. It’s only fitting that this year’s commemorative bottles will feature an artistic rendering of Kendall-Jackson’s homebred hero. “It feels like a natural connection to bring our two great passions together on the global stage at the Kentucky Derby. Although Good Magic is now retired, we wanted to highlight his remarkable accomplishments,” Banke says. Kendall-Jackson’s commemorative wines are now available online and in select retailers. So, step aside mint julep. For years to come, wineloving Kentucky Derby fans can raise a glass to their favorite American tradition with the same wines being poured at Churchill Downs.

Celebrating 15 Years of Hope Learn about local nonprofit One Heart for Women and Children history and get involved in your community. By Tarre Beach

I

n late 1998, Stephanie Bowman of Orlando was a homeless addict, foraging for food in dumpsters with her two young daughters. Not too long afterwards, Bowman found herself in a state-funded treatment facility and her girls in foster care. This turning point, though painful, was the beginning of a journey that did more than just get Bowman clean, sober, and reunited with her children. It eventually inspired her to help other Central Florida residents, who are experiencing food insecurity, homelessness, and may be battling alcoholism or drug addiction.

One Woman’s Story, A Community’s Success

Bowman, who was featured in People magazine’s first-ever Kindness Issue and was on The Kelly Clarkson Show before the pandemic, tries mightily to keep the focus on the nonprofit she founded, One Heart for Women and Children (often shortened just to One Heart), not her own personal story. For Bowman, it’s the nonprofits’ donors, partners, volunteers, and the community’s successes that really matter. However, she acknowledges that if someone finds inspiration or relatability to her own

30

Central Florida Lifestyle | May 2022

story, she’s OK with it. Just like One Heart, her goal is to bring people help and hope.

ing a drug and/or alcohol treatment program, mental health services and other support.

15 Years of Service

We Are One

This year, One Heart celebrates 15 years of supporting community members. (Officially, One Heart for Women and Children received its IRS tax-exempt 501(3)c status in 2011.) In the beginning the group held a Christmas party for children of women in alcohol and drug treatment. That first Christmas party included 54 children, last year 1,612 children celebrated Christmas together at the annual party. From those humble beginnings, One Heart has grown to include a food pantry, a thrift shop, and a monthly hot meal (which was suspended during the pandemic but will be coming back in June, check OneHeartOrlando.org for more information). According to Bowman, One Heart’s mission is not just to be a supplier of food and clothes, but rather a valuable resource for those needing transitional support. That includes among other things educational help, access to life skills and parenting courses, as well as assistance with find-

Although One Heart first focused on helping women and children, it has assisted many men as well. One Heart’s transparency promise states that it will never discriminate based on race, color, religion, gender, gender expression, age, national origin, disability, marital status, sexual orientation, or military status. Melvin Pierson, a recent resident of Orlando, was not turned away when he came to One Heart in need of some help. He says he feels blessed and respected by everyone at One Heart. Bowman stresses that One Heart is a place for everyone to feel welcome no matter their circumstances. “When people walk in, we want them to feel just like anyone else: whether they had a shower that day or haven’t had a shower in a month; whether they walked there or drove a fancy car. We want every single person who walks through the doors to feel the same, which is to feel hope and to feel loved,” she says.

Providing During the Pandemic

During the pandemic One Heart didn’t shut down. Not even for one day. “We could see that there was a need. Of course, we had no idea how enormous it would be, but we just knew we couldn’t let our friends down,” Bowman says. Friend is what Bowman and many of the staff and volunteers at One Heart call the community they serve. “We aim to make our support relational, not transactional. It’s just part of how we operate,” Bowman says. According to Bowman, during the pandemic people would come to the nonprofit’s parking lot in College Park and be surprised to see One Heart was still operating. “I’d say the hardest part was that we couldn’t give hugs anymore. But I’m glad to say we could still provide many of the resources people needed. And we sure got and gave a lot of air fist bumps,” Bowman says. From resume help and mock interviews to referrals for family counselors and medication management with psychiatrists when needed or requested, One Heart has been supporting a lot more friends since the pandemic. The nonprofit’s food expenses went from $300 to $1,000 a day in 2020 due to the increased community need, and it hasn’t stopped. Through strategic planning, One Heart was and is still able to meet those increases. Bowman says she wasn’t surprised by One Heart’s ability to adjust. She credits

community partners as well as One Heart’s quick and creative responses for making all this possible. “We always plan ahead,” Bowman says. “But who could have planned for what we went through with the pandemic? I think it shows how strategic and streamlined we are. Whatever we need, God always provides. I don’t want that to come off as cocky. It’s just been our experience that we get exactly what we need when we need it.”

Helping Hand

One Heart has calculated that it will need to raise $100,000 to meet its commitments for 2022. The development team is happy to announce a few creative ways the community can support One Heart and its mission. For example, American Express recently had a meeting in Orlando and partnered with One Heart to purchase supplies and provide volunteers to make care packages of food, hygiene, and other items. In one hour, the group made enough care packages for about 200-250 people, which were then delivered to shelters and individuals within 24 hours. “That’s the kind of direct impact One Heart can have with the support of our community,” Bowman says. Shopping or donating to One Heart’s thrift store is another great way to help. The thrift store sells to the public, gives to those in need, and helps community members earn

vouchers for non-food items by working in the thrift shop, which also helps them learn valuable work skills. Bowman reports that One Heart can transform each dollar it makes in sales at the thrift store into approximately 12 meals for the community through its partnerships with Second Harvest Food Bank and other organizations and businesses. Bowman encourages everyone to keep One Heart in mind the next time they go thrifting. Your donations as well as your purchases directly impact the community. Other ways to help One Heart include sponsoring a mobile food drop, hiring One Heart volunteers to work for your organization and putting that payment into the nonprofit’s programs, and by promoting microfundraising online. These types of donations are usually made in lieu of gifts for your birthday or wedding anniversary on your social media profile. One Heart accepts donations via these methods: Website: OneHeartOrlando.org, Facebook: facebook.com/OneHeart Matters Venmo: @Oneheart-2040 Paypal: HelpOneHeart@gmail.com

+ EXPERT ADVICE Law |

Hit-and-Run: Q& A with Michael Brehne By Michael B. Brehne, Law Offices of Michael B. Brehne, P.A

H

ere’s everything you need to know about what to do if you are involved in or are a witness of a hit-and-run accident.

What is the first thing you do if you are not severely injured and are involved in a hit-andrun accident?

Whenever an accident occurs, you are legally obligated to do one of two things: one is to exchange information with the other driver including your driver’s license, registration, and insurance information and the second is to call the police and await their arrival to complete an accident report. With a hit-and-run, there is no one to exchange information with so you’ll have to wait for the police to arrive. The police will give you a case number as you will need that to make your claim to your insurance company. It is imperative that you purchase uninsured motorist protection to protect you in a situation such as this. Normally if you only have the state minimum insurance of personal injury protection (PIP) and property damage, you will have no coverage for a hit-andrun accident. This means your car damage will not be covered

and you will have to repair or replace it yourself. As well, you’ll be responsible for your own medical bills beyond the $10,000 provided by PIP coverage. If you have purchased uninsured motorist coverage, be sure that it matches your liability insurance limits and that you did not select a lower amount.

If you witness a hit-and-run, what is the best way to ensure you are a help not a hindrance to the victim and the crime scene?

If you witness a hit-and-run accident and can provide a tag number or strong vehicle description, you are invaluable to the police investigation and to the injured driver who did not leave the scene. Write down or send a text to yourself all the details that you can remember as soon as you realize one of the vehicles is going to drive off or has driven off. Remain at the scene and provide this information to the police when they arrive to complete the accident report. If you cannot stay, make sure that you give that information to the driver that did not leave the scene so that they can give your name and number as well as the information you

obtained to the police. It would be best however for you to stay and complete a written statement to assist in the prosecution of the hit-and-run driver.

If there are no witnesses, do you have any legal recourse?

Even if there are no witnesses to your hit-and-run accident, you may still make a claim and receive uninsured motorist benefits from your own insurance company. Although your story will be subject to great scrutiny, if you have the representation of a skilled lawyer, you will be able to make and process this claim successfully.

When should you call an attorney?

If you were injured in a hit-and-run accident, I would recommend contacting an attorney as soon as you can after you have attended to your injuries. Hit-and-run accidents are heavily scrutinized and require the skills of an experienced attorney to help you avoid the hidden traps insurance companies have set for you when making such a claim.

Joe Dzaluk, President and CEO of the Special Olympics

Central Florida Lifestyle | May 2022

urning 50 is considered a milestone, and for the Special Olympics that couldn’t be truer. Not only is the organization celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2022, but it will also be hosting the Special Olympics USA games. Can someone say big deal?! What makes it even more special is that the games will take place right here in Central Florida June 5-12! President and CEO of the Special Olympics, Joe Dzaluk, has spent years preparing for this moment. “I started volunteering and I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to be a member of the Board of Directors for Special Olympics Florida and so I’ve been involved in

this great movement for a while now,” Dzaluk says. “When we had the opportunity to bid on the games, I was able to take that knowledge and my passion for our athletes and was excited when I was given the opportunity to become president of the games.” Special Olympics’ mission is to provide “year-round sports training and competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities.” This is accomplished through giving willing participants the opportunity to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and much more! According to their website, the ultimate objective of Special Olym-

pics Florida is to “help people with intellectual disabilities participate as productive and respected members of society at large, by offering them a fair opportunity to develop and demonstrate their skills and talents through sports training and competition, and by increasing the public’s awareness of their capabilities and needs.” Eunice Kennedy Shriver, the founder of Special Olympics, was a pioneer in the worldwide struggle for rights and acceptance for people with intellectual disabilities. Back in the late 1950s and early 1960s, she noticed that people with intellectual disabilities were often mistreated, ignored, and excluded. This was true for her sister Rosemary who had an intellectual disability and therefore did not have much access to sports programs at the time. Eunice believed that if people with intellectual disabilities were given the same opportunities and experiences as everyone else, they could accomplish more than anyone could imagine. So, following her belief, in 1962 she invited young people with intellectual disabilities to a summer day camp called Camp Shriver. She continued to host the camp in her back-

yard until 1968 when the first International Special Olympics Games were held in Chicago, Illinois. It was there that Eunice pledged that the Special Olympics would offer people with intellectual disabilities everywhere “the chance to play, the chance to compete and the chance to grow.” 50 years later, Dzaluk and countless others have worked to honor Eunice’s pledge. “My dad taught me at an early age about service and about giving back and so for me this was an opportunity to give,” Dzaluk says. “Special Olympics is just a great organization. It allows us to really open our hearts and our minds to people with intellectual differences. It helps create a more inclusive culture.” To-date, the organization serves over 60,000 athletes and offers training and competition in a variety of team and individual sports, with the help of over 38,000 dedicated coaches and volunteers statewide. Special Olympics Florida also provides more than $2 million in free medical screenings for thousands of Floridians with intellectual disabilities through its health programs, including much needed access to free prescription glasses and hearing aids.

Year round, Special Olympics Florida offers multiple programs including sports, health and fitness, unified champion schools, youth and adaptive sports, athlete leadership, Camp Shriver, and home fitness. Anyone can participate in Special Olympics if they meet the eligibility criteria of having intellectual disabilities or a similar developmental disability. The program is also free of cost to all athletes and parents. Special Olympics Florida will continue to announce all-new events and experiences that will take place in 2022 to honor its 50 years of serving those with intellectual disabilities. “I would encourage all the people here in Central Florida to do two things: volunteer and come to the games—that’s the message we would love to get out to everyone here in Central Florida,” Dzaluk says. The Special Olympics USA games will be televised on ABC and ESPN. “Orlando’s got a great reputation and foundation for being an inclusive place to visit and live and we're just going to be able to showcase that on a national stage,” Dzaluk says. May the Fourth Be With You By Erica Rudnick Macalintal

A

h, Star Wars Day. For fans of the beloved Lucasfilm franchise, May 4th has become a day to celebrate collective adoration of the fantastical space adventure loved by kids and adults alike. The play on words gives the date a fun nod to the Jedi catch phrase, “may the force (forth) be with you”. What more do we need to mark our calendars and call it a holiday?! And with the opening of Disney’s Galaxy’s Edge in 2019, it’s an even bigger chance for enthusiasts to celebrate. Surprisingly, the date’s origins have less to do with Star Wars and more to do with politics. The phrase was initially coined on May 4, 1979, to celebrate the victorious election of everyone’s favorite first female British Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher. Her party peers bestowed their felicitations in local publications, stating “May the Fourth Be with You, Maggie. Congratulations,” making clear that the namesake film was so impactful even Parliament couldn’t resist the wordplay. Quite unintentional, but it stuck! The phrase was reused sporadically throughout the years until the epic space opera came back into

popularity in the 1990’s, showcasing new films that revived the saga and turned it into an even bigger pop culture phenomenon. This new content, combined with the rise of the internet, enabled devotees to connect over shared fandom, further solidifying the “holiday.” As a new fan base grew, so too did the celebrations, stretching globally and beyond. The term popped up in chat rooms, blog comments and Facebook groups, eventually being used as a pretext to host an official Star Wars themed Toronto event in May of 2011. Festivities even made their way to the International Space Station, where astronauts celebrated the day by watching the classic original film (Emperor Palpatine would be proud)! Finally in 2013, having purchased Lucasfilm, the Walt Disney Company began observing the holiday in earnest, making the unofficial holiday as official as it gets. There are endless ways to celebrate your fandom, especially here in Orlando. Galaxy’s Edge, the quintessential pilgrimage for any Star Wars fan, has everything you could want in a near-completely immersive experience. If you’re looking for local fun, Orlando has no shortage of Star

Wars fans looking for ways to come together. While these events generally aren’t “official,” since the IP is held by Disney, some rebels are willing to risk it all in the name of love. From neighborhood theaters playing the favorites to bars with themed happy hour specials, the opportunities to celebrate are endless. So, check local calendars to see what pops up. You’ll find yourself in the company of other Jedi’s, Sith Lords, or even the Empire, depending on your inclination.

Revamp your Closet and Limit Textile Waste by Learning How to Upcycle By Maya James

R

educe, reuse and recycle’ has been a mantra used to describe the process of disposing of garbage in an environmentally conscious way, but what if you were told that the same process applies to clothing? According to the Environmental Protection Agency, textile waste accounts for 5% of landfill space. Upcycling, or the process of transforming an old item that would otherwise end up in a landfill into something new is the perfect way to revamp outdated clothing into a brand new, fashionable piece all while keeping textile waste out of our communities. Here’s how to do it.

Source the Clothing

Old clothing that is already in your closet is the best way to go due to not having to buy anything, but with the modern thrifting craze, upcycling vintage pieces is the next best move. With a few dollars in your pocket, you can go to your local secondhand shop and pick out some.

42

Central Florida Lifestyle | May 2022

How to Upcycle

Upcycling can be done however you like, as long as the end result differs from the initial product. Painting, cutting, sewing, and dyeing are all ways to transform a drab piece of clothing with a bit of creativity.

Easy Upcycling Ideas for the Summertime

Depending on the item you’re working with, you can create something truly special. Take an old skirt with a wild print and cut it into the shape of a pocket. Then hem the freshly cut fabric and sew it to a t-shirt to turn a plain, solid-colored shirt into something so much cooler. To prepare for summer, crop tops are in and so is DIY. Take an oversized top and a trusty pair of fabric scissors and cut the top clean in half – or, cut higher or lower depending on your personal comfort level. If you like the look of a raw hem that’s been freshly cut, then go for it! However, if you’d prefer a more polished look, then feel free to head to the sewing machine and hem the bottom of the shirt.

Distressing jeans is a great way to de-stress – I mean, who doesn’t like cutting up fabric? Lay out an old pair of jeans flat on a sturdy surface. With a box cutter, rotary cutter or even just a pair of fabric scissors, cut diagonal lines in them evenly starting with the knee area and go higher or lower depending on the desired look. Once finished, put the jeans in the washing machine and then the dryer. Once you pull them out, they’ll look amazing.

Empowering Women Together By Stina D’Uva

B

ack in 2015, a couple of female leaders asked me a very simple question, “why don’t you have an event just for women?” My first reaction was, “why would the West Orange Chamber, made up of businesses of all types, sizes, and of men and women, devote an event to just women?” My second reaction was “why not!” No offense to men, I did marry one and birthed three, yet women have our own set of experiences in life and the business world. Those experiences, when shared, can be of tremendous help to others. So rather than looking at it as a women’s only event, I thought of it as an opportunity to build relationships through shared experiences of women. Men are welcome to attend, even encouraged, if they want to understand women in business even better. The first “women’s event” was held the very next year and it was called, “Kicks & Conversation.” The name was perfect considering our featured speakers were Kay Rawlins of Orlando City Soccer and Pride and a player from the Pride. That event received rave reviews and supported our understanding that women share some commonalities that bond us to one another. That knowledge forged the way to continue these events and evolve into a series which lives on today, “Celebrating Extraordinary Women.”

44

Central Florida Lifestyle | May 2022

Over the years, we have been able to listen and learn from women in a wide range of careers. Our list of extraordinary women includes Dr. Antonia Novello US Surgeon General, US House Member Val Demings, Orange County Mayor Teresa Jacobs, Judge Gisela Laurent, Florida House Member Kamia Brown, small business owners Pam Thomas of Pammie’s Sammies, Royetta Ginther of Twistee Treat, and Rilla Tomyn of Betty J’s Florist. Big business too has been represented by Marva Johnson of Charter Communications, Sandy Hosteter of Truist Bank and Julie Kleffel of Seacoast Bank. In addition, we have had representatives from our educational institutions including Maritz Martinez of UCF, Dr. Falecia Williams of Valencia College and OCPS Superintendent Dr. Barbara Jenkins. Each of their stories, although

different, still had similar tones of challenges having to do with the simple fact that they are women in the business world. However, the resounding message delivered at each event has been one of mutual support rather than of division. They remind us that together, we can create better workplaces for women with opportunities for one another. This year’s event held on Thursday, June 9th from 4-6 pm at the meeting space of the Foundation for a Healthier West Orange will be no different. The extraordinary panel will include the city of Ocoee’s Chief of Police, Saima Plasencia, small business owner of Trophies Unlimited, Ann Whittle, Leticia Adams of Walt Disney World and Shelly Wilkes of the Orlando Magic. To be inspired by these extraordinary women, to laugh and to cry, join me by visiting wochamber.com.

Chamber Advocacy and Florida Legislative Actions That Affect Your Business By Don Long, Lake Nona Regional Chamber of Commerce

O

ne of the most important mission components for chambers of commerce is advocacy. To support this component, most chambers organize advocacy or governmental affairs committees composed of business leaders from numerous segments of the local markets. These committees usually work under the direction of the boards of directors with assistance from the chamber staff. From the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, advocacy is, “the act or process of supporting a cause or proposal”. Therefore, chamber advocacy programs act on behalf of the community’s interests by thorough research of local trends along with advice gained from affiliation with statewide or nationwide advocacy programs. During the 2022 Florida Legislative session, the Lake Nona Regional Chamber of Commerce (LNRCC) monitored and participated in programs established by the Florida Chamber of Commerce and the Florida Association of Chamber Professionals that strive to advocate for Florida and local businesses. The Florida Chamber offered several opportunities for local chambers to support or oppose bills during the legislative session that ended in March 2022. Whether a business owner or resident, many of these issues are worth knowing about. Here, readers can read a brief review of three of the most important legislative issues affecting Florida businesses. More detailed reviews are available by visiting the Florida Chamber of Commerce website, https://www.flchamber. com/advocacy/legislative-updates/ . ■

Visit Florida Extension was approved for funding through 2028. Visit Florida funding was scheduled

to expire October 2023. Most chambers believe Visit Florida is a primary part of supporting our tourism industry. Fix to Homeowners Insurance passed the Senate but not the House. The bill would address insurance companies’ inability to reissue policies, pricing of renewals at unaffordable levels, or ceasing Florida operations in entirety. It will also address several issues with the State provided Citizens Insurance program. Several Senate lawmakers requested inclusion of this issue during the April 2022 Legislation Special Session scheduled by Governor DeSantis. The Consumer Data Privacy Bill is stalled indefinitely. The bill faced heavy opposition from most chambers and the business community. If approved, the bill would require significant and costly changes to how businesses collect and share customer information.

Your local chamber may also advocate support or opposition to local government matters. Before officially supporting or opposing local government matters, chambers usually consult with the local business community. Within LNRCC, the board of directors considers whether to advocate for support or opposition. The chamber may then respond by requesting letters of support or opposition from their members. Citizens should take these advocacy opportunities seriously so that government elected, and departmental officials hear the voice of the community. When receiving an opportunity to provide your opinion LNRCC encourages your comment.

LNRCC is a membership not-for-profit organization with offices located in Lake Nona at 6555 Sanger Rd, Orlando, FL 32827. It is not affiliated with, or sponsored by, Lake Nona Property Holdings, LLC, or its affiliated entities. Comments or requests for information are encouraged at Administration@LakeNonaCC.org.

A Winter Park resident completes her first trip with Blue Origin, an experience that can provide more opportunities for SpaceKids Global.

By Alexis George

I

n March 2022, Sharon Hagle and her husband Marc Hagle completed their first trip to space on the Blue Origin New Shepard. Blue Origin was founded by Jeff Bezos with the vision of enabling a future where millions of people are living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. Today, Blue Origin’s efforts to “fly astronauts to space on New Shepard, produce reusable liquid rocket engines, create a highly reusable orbital launch vehicle with New Glenn, and return Americans to the surface of the Moon will add new chapters to the history of spaceflight.” This mission was the fourth human flight for the New Shepard program and the 20th in its history. The flight took off at 8:57 a.m. CDT and arrived safely back to earth at 9:07 a.m. CDT. The 10-minute journey to space traveled 62 miles above earth, where the six-person crew experienced several minutes of weightlessness and a rare glimpse of Planet Earth from above. Prior to lift off, all crew members underwent space training, including zero-g etiquette and mission rehearsals. The crew also included: Party America CEO Marty Allen; entrepreneur and University of North Carolina professor Jim Kitchen; New Shepard Chief Architect Gary Lai; and President of Commercial Space Technologies Dr. George C. Nield. Hagle described her experience as “out-of-this-world”. She hopes that her first-hand pre-flight training will play a key role in the opportunities and education SpaceKids Global creates for kids.

Central Florida Lifestyle | May 2022

“Having just experienced the journey of a lifetime with my husband, Marc, I am further inspired and dedicated to ensure that the next generation is ready for space,” says Sharon. Founded by Sharon in 2015, SpaceKids Global is a nonprofit whose mission is to “inspire students to excel in STEAM+ education with a focus on empowering young girls.” To date, Sharon has reached nearly 100,000 students globally. This is made possible through the hosting of several annual challenges designed to inspire kids to pursue careers in the space industry, which includes national essay competitions. SpaceKids also has a partnership with the Girl Scouts of Citrus County and participates in Club for the Future’s Postcards to Space program. As the only female crew member on Blue Origin New Shepard and the first ever married couple to fly to space on a commercial vehicle, Hagle hopes her unique experience in space will be the “First Step” in making space travel and STEAM+ education accessible for kids everywhere one day. The Hagles’ will have more upcoming trips to space and will also be announcing the winners of their National Essay Competition on National Space Day (May 6) which will give two kids the chance for a ZERO-G Experience.
