Don’t Rely On Legal Advice From Neighbors

Despite my mother’s clear intentions in her will to leave everything to me, I found myself entangled in a costly probate process to inherit her estate. How can I ensure my own estate is organized to spare my children from enduring such a burdensome ordeal?

A:

As per Caring.com, a primary hub for aging and caregiving resources, which also offers tools to find assisted living and home care services, only 32% of US adults prioritize drafting a will or trust. Additionally, a mere 15% manage any form of estate planning due to frequent loss or misplacement of documents. Even among those who keep their paperwork, many fall short of safeguarding their assets adequately, mistakenly assuming that the documents automatically transfer assets to heirs. Consequently, a majority of heirs find themselves entangled in probate proceedings, often unfamiliar with the process and facing costs beyond their means.

Florida, hiring an attorney for probate is mandatory unless the estate is valued under $75,000 and you have the ability to manage the complex probate process yourself.

How much does probate typically cost? It’s often in the thousands of dollars. Many uninformed individuals mistakenly believe that having a will alone is sufficient to avoid probate. However, this misconception often leads to unnecessary expenses lining attorneys’ pockets. Had the deceased sought advice from an attorney about probate when preparing their will, these costs could have been avoided. With the proper legal documents, probate can sometimes be entirely circumvented.

ment, which most banks and investment companies will set up at no extra cost. When it comes to real estate, including Florida homestead properties and timeshares, placing them into an enhanced Life Estate Deed, commonly known as a Lady Bird Deed, may be a wise choice. Both POD arrangements and Florida’s Enhanced Life Estate Deeds allow assets to pass directly to beneficiaries at once upon death, bypassing the need for probate.

What is Probate? Probate is a legal process often misunderstood until needed, such as when accessing a deceased relative’s assets like a home or jewelry. Despite what a will specifies, legal steps are usually necessary to claim these assets, requiring proving in court that one is the rightful heir as stated in the will. In simpler terms, probate involves confirming the will before the court. In

How can the 85% of adults who are uninformed about probate protect their heirs from the lengthy process, especially for significant assets like houses, bank accounts, and investment accounts? The solution is straightforward. For bank and investment accounts, you can appoint beneficiaries directly on the accounts using a Payable on Death (POD) arrange-

If you’re among the 85% who rely on advice from neighbors rather than consulting with an estate planning attorney, it’s essential to actively seek correct information to ensure your assets are properly passed to your beneficiaries upon your death. Without taking informed steps, you risk burdening your loved ones with costly legal fees and complicated probate processes potentially causing your assets to become unclaimed property in Florida. The most responsible approach is to consult with a qualified estate planning attorney. Do it today.

Meet Sharon Line Clary

Sharon Line Clary is a pioneering and award-winning marketer whose three-decade career has spanned healthcare, sports and hospitality. Currently, Sharon is Vice President of Strategic Marketing & Communications for AdventHealth where she leads marketing, communications, partnerships and corporate sales.

Born and raised in Central Florida, Sharon is very involved in the community, and focused on accelerating and improving health and wellbeing and driving economic business through sports, arts and culture. She serves as Board Chair of the Greater Orlando Sports Commission, President-Elect of Florida Citrus Sports, Co-Chair of The Circle at Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts, Founder and Executive Board Member of WISE Greater Orlando and Board Member of the Mennello Museum of Art, Orlando Museum of Art, YMCA and Member of the National Executive Health Summit. Sharon has lived in Winter Park with her husband for 27 years.

What is your WHY?

I think my “why” revolves around inspiring and engaging individuals, whether they are the people I work with, the people in the community, the people on the boards I’m a part of, or the people I work with at AdventHealth. I aim to inspire them to live their best possible lives.

Have you drawn inspiration from other women? Tell us about someone who has inspired you?

I’m a part of a group called WISE Greater Orlando. It’s a group of women in sports and events in Central Florida, founded about three years ago. Its mission is to

empower and inspire women in the business of sports and events. I have a degree in sports marketing, which was very male dominated, and I didn’t have those mentors back then or people to look up to. I find this group of women to be so inspiring and they’re doing it at home, they’re doing it at work, they’re helping women in the community. Women like Kay Stocz Miller who’s with Orlando Magic, Kay Rawlins with Orlando City, and Jennifer Lastik with Greater Orlando Sports; these are powerful women and good people making things happen in the community. I’m also inspired by Sara Blakey, the founder of Spanx. I love people, especially women, who have a unique idea, relentless in her pursuit because she knew what an impact it would have for women. And she does it all with grace and humor.

What are you most proud of?

There are so many things, but I think I’m most proud of the relationships that I’ve built over the years. I was born and raised in Central Florida, and I am a true Florida native. My relationships when I was very young, all the way into new relationships with people I just met today, are special to me. I value what people bring to the table. My passions are sports, the arts and sports tourism. The relationships and partnerships I’ve built through AdventHealth with the Orlando Magic, Walt Disney World, NASCAR, Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts give me a lot of pride. I love collaboration, creating and solving issues for the community and finding solutions where there’s a need and making things happen; that fills me. I am most proud of that work..

Meet Doreen Forsythe

As the Senior Manager of Women’s & Children’s Health Navigation at AdventHealth and a valued member of the AdventHealth team since 2001, Doreen Forsythe, BSN, RN oversees a team of Nurse Navigators that help coordinate women’s healthcare needs. A specially trained registered nurse, Doreen is available to help women access AdventHealth’s extensive networks of services across Central Florida. She not only provides expert clinical assistance but also helps to identify ways to best connect patients with resources and manage overall care. Doreen acts as a personal advocate, creating a seamless healthcare experience that focuses on health, wellness, hospitality, and convenience.

Doreen’s vast clinical experience has been an integral part of building the program for Women’s & Children’s Health Navigation at AdventHealth. Under her leadership, compassion and empathy have become pillars of the program. Having been a long-term resident of West Orange County, Doreen has formed lasting relationships with members of the community, committing herself to providing patients and their family the support they need throughout their healthcare journey. Besides her work, Doreen is a proud mom and stepmom to six children, caregiver for her husband, and is actively involved in youth sport and activities in the West Orange community.

What is your WHY?

It’s difficult to summarize, because I have so many

“whys.” I would say my “why” is my faith and family. There is not a choice or a decision I make without considering my children and my family first. I play so many roles as a woman, mom, wife, friend and daughter. I want to make my parents proud of me. They both recently passed within five years, and I think of them every day. Everything they instilled in me, my morals and my work ethic, is with me every day.

Have you drawn inspiration from other women?

Tell us about someone who has inspired you?

I would say all the women in our community are so inspirational to me. I meet so many women from all different backgrounds and demographics, and they’re all dealing with something major. When I see how these women pick up the pieces of their lives, even when they’re shattered, and the way they get back up on their feet and do their best each day, I find each of them incredibly inspiring.

What are you most proud of?

I am most proud of my family and of my children. We’ve had some major highs and some major lows, and we just keep going. God has a plan. I’m also proud of what we have accomplished with our Health Navigation Team. The work that we do is very personal to me. I’m proud of the work we do, proud of what it’s become and all the different ways that I can continue to grow in this role.

26 Central Florida Lifestyle | May-June 2024

Meet Lauren Fry Hamner

Lauren Frey Hamner, a Winter Park native, has nurtured her three daughters in the same community she calls home. Lauren grew up on Genius Drive amidst peacocks, steeping her childhood in the wonders of nature. From a young age, she dedicated herself to rescuing and caring for a myriad of injured or orphaned animals, instilling a deep compassion that runs in her family. Since its establishment in 2019, Lauren has been the driving force behind All Paws on Deck Animal Rescue of Winter Park, serving as its Founder and President. Her tireless advocacy in the animal community has been an inspiration to many as she gives voiceless creatures a voice and a safe haven. She actively leads the team of volunteers at All Paws who foster animals in their homes until a fur-ever family is found. Lauren also serves her community as a Speech-language Pathologist in the local public schools, where she provides therapy for students and special education.

What is your WHY?

My “why” is a lifelong love of animals, creatures big and small. My mom and dad were very tolerant, and when we were younger, we raised orphaned raccoons. We lived near a bunch of orange groves, so there were always possums, and we also have peacocks, which we still have to this day. I have three sisters and two of them help me run the rescue, so we’re like-minded with a deep love for animals. Providing animals with a home feeds my soul.

Have you drawn inspiration from other women?

Tell us about someone who has inspired you?

Before I started our own rescue, I was fostering in different groups. There’s a wonderful friend named Patti Boyle, and she runs Buddies for Life. She mentored me and taught me so much. I learned so much from Patti and she’s always supportive, helping us to connect with the resources like rescue vets. The prices of spaying a dog privately could be $300.00, which we can’t do, so Patti has been an invaluable mentor. She’s been active in this work for 15 to 20 years and could have stopped a long time ago but hasn’t.

What are you most proud of?

My daughters. They’re kind, compassionate, smart, wonderful girls. I’m so very fortunate. They’re doing good things in this world already and will continue to do so.

Meet Monica May

Monica May, a Gracie® award winning radio and television veteran has enchanted airwaves across the country in markets such as Washington, D.C., Atlanta, Houston, Montgomery, Al., and her beloved, Orlando, with her distinct voice.

A champion for developing a hyperlocal connection, Monica is a beacon in the community during times of crisis and triumph. Her journalistic approach has garnered notable interviews with leaders, including President Barack Obama, The Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan, Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer and nearly every City and County Commissioner or Orlando and orange County since 2006; and that’s the short list.

Throughout her career, Monica has earned numerous accolades and industry recognition from national and local entities, including Billboard’s Top Programmer Nominee & Urban Radio Programmer of the Year, Central Florida Association of Black Journalists Lifetime Achievement Award, and she was recently inducted into the National Black Radio Hall of Fame.

As principal consultant with Monica May Communications, she has evolved into a highly sought-after speaker and coach. Her non-profit program, “Let’s Spill the Tea,” came to life after a heart-to- heart with her daughter Monique, while navigating tough conversations as a teen.

Monica lives in Orlando with her husband George, and together they own CB Bistro, a live music venue, restaurant, and catering company.

In this next phase of her career, Monica has turned on the mic once again to host Point of View, a community focused talk show and Soul School Sunday, a reminiscent music set, which both air on STAR 94.5 (WCFB-FM). She also hosts an “edutainment” podcast, One Take Live, which is available on YouTube and Spotify.

What is your WHY?

My answer is simple; I am a servant. I’ve known this for a long, long time. Every impulsive or negative thing that has ever happened to me in life, I’ve turned into a teachable moment for myself and others, so I teach from my mistakes.

Have you drawn inspiration from other women? Tell us about someone who has inspired you?

My first inspiration came from my mom. She was a single mom raising two daughters on the Upper West Side in New York City. Her work ethic was impeccable. She put one foot in front of the other every day to raise my sister and me. Her goal was keeping the lights on and food on the table, so sometimes I felt she was a little disconnected from us. But as I got older, I certainly understood. Currently, I work with younger interns in my business, and I’m always trying to be the projector, like Beyoncé would say in her new country album. I want to be your projector, your protector. I try to project good work ethics and instill this quality. My mom showed me how to do that.

What are you most proud of?

My ability to leave a situation that no longer provides a challenge or has become a hindrance. If it doesn’t work for me, I don’t continue doing it. I just walk away. I’m not a diva, but I chose this field because it should be fun, and it should invigorate. When that stops, I have no problem walking away. I’m also proud of my nonprofit called Let’s Spill the Tea. It’s an organization dedicated to helping families break through communicate barriers during the teen and young adult years.

She then completed a fellowship in advanced gynecologic surgery with Las Vegas Institute of Minimally Invasive Surgery, and the institute awarded her the Boston Scientific Innovations in MIS Women’s Pelvic Health award. Dr. Stockwell’s passion is to develop safer and more effective surgical innovations. She currently holds patents on several diverse technology-based medical and surgical devices. She is also an entrepreneur who recently launched a nutraceutical company for women. She is also interested in international health and has participated in medical missions in Tanzania, Peru, and Colombia.

What is your WHY?

My “why” is to make a positive difference in the world. I’m passionate about Women’s Health. I’m passionate about surgery. I’m passionate about innovation and trying to bring it all together and make a positive difference in the world. That is my “why” and what drives me.

Have you drawn inspiration from other women?

Tell us about someone who has inspired you?

The biggest inspirations in my life have honestly been my colleagues and coworkers. Dr. McCarus, my boss, he’s a huge inspiration to me for Women’s Health. As far as female inspiration, one of my biggest mentors in my life is Dr. Jasmine Pedroso. We were co-directors for the fellowship program in Las Vegas and she’s gone on to do great things. She’s a huge inspiration to me for the work that she’s doing; medical mission trips to Africa, performing surgeries to fix gender mutilation. I actually delivered her two children. But I would say my colleagues probably inspire me more than anybody else. To see their passion and see that they love what they do and how they push the envelope every day to enhance surgical care for women inspires me.

What are you most proud of?

I’m most proud of being a mom and being a role model for my four children. I’m showing them how you can be career-driven and try to make a difference in this world. I also have a very supportive husband who is not in medicine, and that helps a lot.

Meet Micaela Stone

Micaela Stone is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with Orlando Psychology Associates who specializes in working with children and adolescents. She completed a Bachelor of Social Work degree in 2016, with a Children Services Certificate. Micaela then received her Master of Social Work degree in 2017; both degrees received from the University of Central Florida.

Micaela has experience working in a school setting and currently serves as a Mental Health Social Worker for Orange County Public Schools. She has also provided mental health services in an inpatient facility, as well as at a central Florida outpatient community mental health center.

Working as a mentor for Keeping It Classy Sisterhood, a local mentoring program for young women in Central Florida, Micaela teaches young women to serve, lead, and advocate. In her downtime, she enjoys taking fitness classes, being outdoors, trying new coffee shops, and spending time with her dog.

What is your WHY?

I would say that my “why” for doing what I do is I truly believe in the ethics behind social work. All people, regardless of their circumstances, deserve the opportunity to be heard and an opportunity to grow and change their lives.

Have you drawn inspiration from other women?

Tell us about someone who has inspired you?

I think that every healing professional that I come into contact with, from my old licensure supervisor and coworkers to my current coworkers, anybody that does this work knows how hard it is. Learning new things from all of them has been really impactful. If I were to think of one person right now, it would be my current coworker, Veronica Lewis. Just seeing her act as a true mentor and advocate for young woman has been really inspiring.

What are you most proud of?

I’m most proud of the little moments. I’m proud when a client says to me they remember what I said about a situation, or when they tell me about a skill that they’ve used that we’ve implemented in their treatment plan. Those moments stick out to me the most. It’s knowing that my work outside of a session made a difference in someone’s life..

Meet Deborah Wiggins

Deborah Wiggins has served at The Hope Church for 38 years and has had the honor for the past 21 years of serving under the leadership of her husband. Besides being the First Lady of The Hope Church, she is the Chief Administrative Officer, the Director of Hope Cares, and the leader of the Sister to Sister Women’s Fellowship. She is also the Leading Lady of the International Bishops’ Conference where she heads the fellowship for the Bishops’ Wives. She is an ordained minister, an author, an entrepreneur, a former TV Personality, widely known as a member of the Current Ladies on Good Life 45 and the Founder of the Washington Shores Christmas Parade and Celebration. Deborah is happily married to Archbishop Allen T.D. Wiggins and is a proud mother of five and grandmother of four. Her family is her pride and joy.

What is your WHY?

My “why” probably goes back to my very young years and has to do with me being a young single mother. I understand how difficult it can be to just navigate life and provide basic needs for your family. I was never homeless or anything of that nature, but I can only imagine that I was probably one paycheck away from being in the same boat, in the same position as some of the people that God has given me the honor of serving.

Have you drawn inspiration from other women?

Tell us about someone who has inspired you?

My mother was a teen mom and was unable to raise my brother and me. I was raised by my great-grandpar-

ents. It was the most amazing life where I learned about caring and a life of service. I was raised by a family that loved me and cared for me. We always had people in our home that didn’t have a place to go, and they had nothing to eat. It was not uncommon for us to have dinner and have a guest in our home. I learned we are one big community, one big family, and that we have to love and take care of one another. Love is action and not just an emotion. My great-grandmother’s name was Louise Martin, but everybody in the community called her Big Mama. She became Mama for everybody, for people that didn’t have family, that didn’t have a mother. She has always been that example and I credit who I am and how I am to have grown up with such an amazing example.

What are you most proud of?

I am most proud of my family, very proud of the work God allows us to do and the people that He allows us to minister to. I have four sons and a daughter, and I have three granddaughters and one grandson. And when I say I am really proud of my family, it’s not because they are doctors and lawyers; it’s because they are great human beings. They are great people who love each other, and love people who serve right alongside of us in ministry. It makes it a joy to do what we do because they are right there with us every step of the way, helping us to make things happen. The work can be stressful, but I love it and I get to do it with my family.

Men’s Health

Learn the common health issues men face and how to address them so you can live a long, healthy life.

According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), besides the top three health issues—heart disease, cancer, and stroke—there are a handful of other health concerns that are quietly doing damage to the American male population. Let’s take a look at what they are and what you can do to help protect yourself and/or someone you love.

The National Health Interview Survey (NHIS), conducted by NIH, reports:

■ 72% of men do not meet federal physical activity guidelines.

■ 50% of men have hypertension (high blood pressure).

■ 42% of men age 20 or older are obese.

■ 30% of men age 18 or older drink heavily at least once a year.

■ 18% of men have a mental illness.

■ 13% of men are currently smokers.

Let’s Get Physical

The federal physical activity guidelines for men ages 18-64 are the same as they are for women. They include getting at least 150 minutes (which can equal 30 minutes a day five days) of moderate intensity activity such as brisk walking a week and also getting at least two days of

muscle strengthening activity such as weightlifting or resistance training a week.

Taking up a sport, walking your dog, going to a fitness class at the gym or even enjoying a pick-up game of basketball are great ways to enjoy your weekly physical activity. Men may enjoy solitary workouts, experts suggest having a fitness buddy can help hold you accountable to reaching your weekly goals.

Up Your Fiber, Lower Your Blood Pressure

Studies show that highly processed, low-fiber foods increase the risk of hypertension (high blood pressure). Increasing whole foods, especially those high in fiber and low in sodium, are good ways to improve your health.

Try using salt-free or low-salt spices and condiments. Salt-substitutes may be another way to get the flavor you want without increasing your risk of high blood pressure. When using potassium chloride saltsubstitutes, keep in mind that too much potassium can be dangerous for those with kidney, heart, and liver disease or diabetes.

For an energizing snack, enjoy dried fruits and raw nuts (no salt added). Both add fiber and provide some protein which can help you feel full and support healthy blood pressure.

Watch Your Weight

Eating right and exercising are the no-brainers we all know we need to do to stay healthy and live longer. If your body mass index (BMI) is between 30 and 39.9 it may be time to take your health more seriously. The American Medical Association defines this range as obese for men. Any BMI over 40 is considered severely obese.

Being in the healthy BMI range (18.5 to 24.9), is not just about vanity, it’s about longevity. According to a study in the Lancet, men with a BMI of 30 or greater shaved 4-2 years off their life expectancy than men whose BMI was lower than 30.

Dr. Marc Bubbs, a naturopath and the nutrition lead for the Canadian Men’s Olympic Basketball team says, “We have to get back to the idea of what foods have the most nutrients in them and let’s start eating more of those.” He recommends a high-protein, low-carb diet with plenty of dark, green leafy vegetables to support weight loss and build lean muscle for men.

Curb Your Drinking

Long-term regular drinking damages the heart and heart disease is the leading cause of death in men. Routine drinking and overdrinking can also impact mental health. While men account for a lower percentage of Americans who are diagnosed

34 Central Florida Lifestyle | May-June 2024 + HEALTH & Wellness

with a mental illness, they are by far the largest group of people who die by suicide. Classified as a depressant, alcohol can exacerbate mental health issues and depression.

Because alcohol impacts blood flow, it may cause erectile dysfunction for some men. Over time, persistent heavy drinking can harm the liver, contribute to low levels of testosterone, and increase levels of estrogen, which may disrupt a man’s normal sex drive. Alcohol also reduces the quantity and quality of sperm. One 2017 study published in Reproductive Medicine Online, found that men who drank five alcoholic drinks per week had lower sperm counts and lower sperm quality than men who did not drink alcohol.

Cutting back on alcohol is extremely important for good health. It will support your liver function, may reduce your appetite, resulting in weight loss, and lowers your risk of the big three: heart disease, cancer, and stroke.

Mount Sinai Hospital gives these helpful suggestions on how to be more mindful of and/or reduce your drinking:

■ Track how many drinks you have a week

■ Know how much alcohol is in a standard drink

■ Pace yourself: Have no more than one drink per hour, sip on water

between drinks

■ Eat a healthy, filling meal before drinking

■ Stay away from people and places where drinking is the main or only activity

■ Keep alcohol out of your home

■ Have a polite, but firm way of turning down a drink when offered one

If you feel you may have a drinking problem, seek help from a professional mental health counselor or your primary healthcare provider.

Stay Mentally Healthy

The NHIS found that men suffer from mental illness less than women. However, men also don’t get the support they need as often as women when faced with mental health challenges. Part of the problem is that traditionally men have been told they must be strong and be able to handle things on their own. Thankfully, some societal shifts are starting to happen to encourage men to allow themselves to express emotions in healthy ways. But there’s still a lot of room for growth.

What can you do to support men’s mental health? An Australian suicide prevention campaign that’s gone global suggests a simple fourstep plan with the acronym ALEC.

Ask: Start by asking how he’s doing. Listen: Give his response your full attention. Encourage action:

Help him develop next steps that may improve how he feels. Check in: Follow up and continue to check in.

Stop Smoking

We all know that smoking is not good for anyone male or female. According to the American Lung Association, tobacco use (cigarettes, cigars, pipes and smokeless) has declined 64% among American men from 2002-2018. Use of any kind of tobacco, including e-cigarettes and vape gadgets also decreased by nearly 1% among high school boys in that same timeframe.

The Mayo Clinic states the most effective strategy to quit smoking for good is to combine a smoking cessation program, which may include medication or nicotine replacement products to step-down the amount of nicotine consumed, with help from professionals trained to treat tobacco dependence. There are pros and cons to many of the medications and products used to help you quit tobacco/nicotine. You should check with your healthcare provider to see which is right for you. If you are thinking of quitting, start with this famous quote from President Theodore Roosevelt as inspiration: “Believe you can and you’re halfway there.”

5 Habits

to Improve Your Domestic Environment

Your home environment is essential to lead a good quality of life and feel comfortable in the place you rest and spend time with your family. There are different ways you can not only improve and make your home better, but also contribute to your health. Here are five habits you can adopt:

Use the right lightning

Believe it or not, artificial light is also a very important part of our lives. Lights can shape our mood! When an environment is too dark, it can give a sense of darkness and being in this exposure for too long can even make people depressed. Lights can also create certain atmospheres depending on what you are looking for. Warm white lights can give a sense of a welcoming space, while bright white lights reflect the walls creating a more clinical atmosphere.

Furniture setup

Setting up furniture is an essential part of interior design. Depending on the space available we can design everything to our taste while also adding what we need. It is important to measure every space to fit everything, but also think about traffic flow, visual balance, and sav-

ing space. To keep things organized, you can get cabinets and storage. For setting up your home interior design, you can also adapt the concept of Feng Shui, a Chinese philosophy that seeks balance and harmony between the elements. Incorporating your personal style is what will make your home environment even better!

Consider adding plants

Although they require a little bit of work and care, adding and cultivating plants in your home can be very beneficial for the domestic environment. Pants can improve the quality of indoor air through photosynthesis. They absorb the pollution and release oxygen, vapor and increase humidity. Besides the air quality, having plants in your home can reduce stress. In a study, scientists found out that having plants can make you feel more comfortable, thus, reducing stress and making you feel more happy.

Temperature

The right temperature is important to maintain a comfortable and good environment in our home. The temperature can be a factor in productivity and how well you sleep at night. When you are sleeping, the

body’s temperature drops naturally, so sleeping in a cooler room can help you not fall asleep easier but also stay asleep without any interruption. And in a more warm environment, it can reduce respiratory and allergic conditions.

Maintaining a organized and clean home

Doing shores and clearing a house can be very boring and annoying. It takes part of the time you could be doing something, like watching a movie or working. However, maintaining a clean environment is necessary to have a better lifestyle. Regularly cleaning your house can keep you organized, reduce allergies, and avoid spreading germs. By being organized, it is easier to find things you need, which can also reduce stress. Although boring, you can always find a way to make it fun! Cleaning with your whole family can help you clean faster while also spending some time with your family.

These are just a few examples you can adapt to improve your home environment. Whether using the appropriate light or regularly cleaning your space, having a good environment can be very beneficial for your lifestyle and health!

Safe and Confident

Two Daniel Mills Apprentices share how their experience has helped them find their confidence and want to create a safe place on stage for others.

Recent University of Central Florida graduate Jonathan Gardon and Bishop Moore High School ascending senior Lilly Gonzalez both love the theater arts. However, they are on two different paths as they learn and earn their way through production after production as part of the Daniel Mills Apprenticeship program.

From Performer to Manager

Gonzalez started her theater journey performing in elementary school when she was Timon in the Lion King. But she soon found that she enjoyed doing behind the stage work better. “When I performed, I got very nervous. I felt like everyone else was so good,” Gonzalez says. “Once I got to do some tech work, I felt a lot less stressful and had way more enjoyable.”

But stage management and tech work isn’t all fun and games either. Gonzalez says the challenge is that now she’s made so many friends in tech it can be difficult to focus on the work when she’s having such a good time. That’s not to say she’s goofing off. More often it feels like there’s just not enough time in the day to get everything done.

She says another test for her was feeling confident enough to manage others, especially friends and adults. With help from the professionals she’s

apprenticed with, she’s feeling more assured in her abilities to stage manage when she’s called upon to do so. This year, Gonzalez recently assisted with stage managing the Daniel Mills Theatre Company’s production of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time at Fringe ArtSpace.

Give it a Try

Gonzalez advises other theater tech hopefuls to not be so self-conscious and try everything. “Don’t be worried about what other people think about you,” she says. “We all have to start somewhere. No one is going to think less of you when you first start out.”

Experience, Experience, Experience

For Gardon, who majored in acting, being on the performance track in the Daniel Mills Apprenticeship program allowed him to work with both local and national talent. Last year, he performed in Metamorphoses at UCF Black Box Theatre as Phaeton and other roles.

“The prose was so beautiful and getting to work with director Julia Listengarten was a special experience,” Gardon says.

Performing with young actors also inspired him to want to teach the next generation of theater artists. “It’s been so encouraging to see

the creative minds of children being unlocked through performing and storytelling,” Gardon says.

Supporting Safe Spaces

Gardon will continue acting whether in stage productions, in the theme parks or while teaching. He says he is also excited by the idea of making the performing arts accessible to more young people and keeping the stage a safe place for all. To ensure that, Gardon became certified by the Society of American Fight Directors (SAFD) in unarmed combat and stage fighting choreography. He also has experience as a theater arts intimacy coordinator.

According to Gardon, the entertainment industry is making a move toward, and may even mandate, intimacy support for actors. He says he wants to be a part of facilitating comfortable and artistic exchanges between performers. “Actors are often told you have to be OK with everything. It’s part of the ‘Yes, and..’ philosophy so many have come to expect. But as society and also the industry grows and evolves, we’ll see more and more actors requesting and maybe even demanding support in these areas, which I see as a good thing.”

Quest, Inc. –Raising Glasses to Change Lives

Quest, Inc. is hosting its 28th Annual Wine Quest event this May to raise funds for individuals with developmental disabilities. Nathan’s story is a testament to how Quest’s programs help adults and children with developmental disabilities experience a full life.

Nathan was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) as a young child. His peers bullied him, and he struggled academically while attending public school. Mendy, his mother, enrolled him at Quest Kids Academy (QKA) to find a more supportive environment that would give Nathan the best chance to succeed. QKA provides a supportive educational setting for children and teens with autism and other developmental disabilities with instruction guided by the principles and procedures of ABA therapy.

Through Quest’s programs, Nathan learned communication skills and coping techniques that helped him. His journey at Quest was difficult, but his positive attitude and willingness to challenge himself through the years allowed him to achieve unexpected milestones. During the latter part of his time at QKA,

Nathan joined Blossom Artisanal in the Work Study Program. Blossom is a social venture created by Quest to provide employment opportunities for young adults with developmental disabilities. Becoming one of the first graduates of QKA last year, Nathan worked his way up to become a wholesale representative for Blossom Artisanal.

“I can’t say enough about Blossom. It is one of the biggest blessings that has happened to him. I would’ve never dreamt that he would be writing emails to companies, that he would be calling companies and trying to do wholesale orders,” says Mendy.

Nathan is grateful for the life skills he learned at Quest and Blossom. He attended Wine Quest for the first time last year and was determined to give back to Quest for all they had done for him. Nathan made a basket for the silent auction using the money he earned and saved from Blossom.

“At first, I felt very nervous about giving the speech for Wine Quest, and then when I got up there, I felt confident, but I felt a little worried about the little misspoken parts, but

I persisted,” Nathan says. “Afterward, I was stunned by the two standing ovations, and then when my basket sold for $4,000, I almost fell over.”

Mendy says she has never been prouder of Nathan. Seeing him on stage, delivering his speech and describing his basket items was incredible. His courageous demeanor proved that he had truly blossomed.

“We light up every time we think about that night because it was probably one of the best nights we’ve ever had. It was an amazing night,” she says.

Nathan’s journey inspires many families who have received a developmental disability diagnosis for their children. It reminds them that a diagnosis does not mean their child’s future is over. Like Nathan, their children can overcome obstacles and achieve milestones.

Wine Quest will take place on May 17-18 at Caribe Royale Orlando. Register now at winequest.org to support a worthwhile cause.

Empowering Success: The Rise of Women in Business

When it comes to entrepreneurship and corporate leadership, women are steadily carving out their place, breaking barriers, and redefining norms. The narrative of women in business has evolved, shifting from a struggle for recognition to a celebration of achievement and empowerment. As we examine the dynamic landscape of business, it becomes increasingly evident that women are not just participants but pivotal contributors to economic growth and innovation.

Gone are the days when boardrooms were predominantly occupied by men in suits. Today, women are making significant strides, not just as employees but as founders, CEOs, and thought leaders. The rise of women-led businesses is a testament to their resilience, vision, and ability to thrive in diverse industries. From tech startups to fashion empires, women are leaving their mark on the business world.

One of the driving forces behind the success of women in business is their ability to embrace diversity and inclusivity. Research consistently shows that diverse teams lead to better decision-making and increased profitability. Women bring unique perspectives, insights, and problem-

solving skills to the table, enriching the business landscape and fostering a culture of innovation.

Women are adept at building strong networks and fostering collaborative relationships. In an interconnected world, networking has become a crucial aspect of business success. Women excel at cultivating meaningful connections, supporting each other, and creating opportunities for growth and advancement. Whether through mentorship programs, industry associations, or online communities, women leverage their networks to navigate challenges and unlock new possibilities.

The empowerment of women in business is also about economic empowerment and social progress. When women succeed in business, entire communities thrive. Studies have shown that investing in women-owned businesses leads to job creation, poverty reduction, and economic development. By supporting women entrepreneurs and business leaders, we can build more inclusive and prosperous societies.

Fostering a culture of inclusion and empowerment within organizations is crucial. Companies must prioritize diversity and create opportunities for everyone to excel and

advance in their careers. This includes implementing fair hiring practices, providing mentorship and leadership development programs, and ensuring equal pay for equal work.

As more women break barriers, shatter stereotypes, and rise to leadership positions, the business landscape will become more diverse, innovative, and resilient. By championing the success of women in business, we not only unlock their full potential but also create a more equitable and prosperous world for all.

CENTRAL FLORIDA LIFESTYLE’S®

You voted, and now the much-anticipated moment is here! It’s time to meet the winners of our 2024 Cutest Pet Contest.

48 Central Florida Lifestyle

Milo

Pet Parents: Frank & Michele Daleandro

What breed is Milo?: Shih Tzu

Tell us how Milo became part of your family: We got Milo after losing our 16 year old shih tzu named Max in January of this year. The house was so incredibly quiet and we needed to add a new furry friend. He also reminded us of our Max.

How has Milo changed your life for the better? Milo has brought so much smiles and joy to everyone after much sadness. He makes us laugh every single day. He loves to greet us at the door and is always so excited to see us. He loves to play and give so many kisses and tag wags.

Does Milo have any unique habits or quirks? Milo does have a few quirks and unique habits. He loves to run away with leaves in his mouth while we chase him to get them from him. He loves to sleep on his back which always looks so funny!! He also loves the blow dryer!!! If he hears one come on he comes running!! He wants you to point it at him so he can bite  and lick the air. He also doesn’t mind getting blow dried after a bath!!! He enjoys going in his playpen and dragging his snuggle puppy out of his crate and having a total wrestling match with him!!! He is also already really good at puzzle toys to find treats and also loves running through a long tunnel.

If Milo could talk, what do you think he would say? f Milo could talk he would ask why every Amazon package isn’t for him.

Is there anything Milo doesn’t like or is afraid of? Milo is afraid of other dogs barking. He also isn’t a fan of walking on his leash.

What advice would you give to others considering getting a pet like yours? If you were going to get a pet like Milo i would say make sure you have lots of time and patience. That puppy energy is crazy but he is so worth it! The amount of joy he gives everyone that meets him is immeasurable.

Rune

Pet Parents: Ryan and Shannon Langel

What breed is Rune?: Australian Shepherd and Smooth Coat Collie Mix

Tell us how Rune became part of your family: We didn’t plan on getting a 4th dog, but a friend called telling us about an Aussie she knew having an “oops” litter. She knew how much we loved aussies and that we preferred rescuing dogs. We told her to let the owner know if there was a blue merle female in the litter then we would take it. The very next day we received a call, Rune was born.

How has Rune changed your life for the better? Rune has made so many of my dreams come true. When I was a child, I dreamed of being a writer. We got Rune while I was attending Full Sail University for Creative Writing. Taking the children’s literature course that’s when I knew, this was Rune’s calling. She currently has four children’s books she stars in. Also, I’ve always wanted a companion I could do dog sports with.

Rune is a Grand Champion Trick Dog and Stunt Dog through Do More With Your Dog. She knows over 140 tricks. We also compete in Barn Hunt and Fast CAT.

Does Rune have any unique habits or quirks? Rune has a short nub tail. She randomly chases and growls at it. She eventually gives up and stares at it as if she hates it and wants a different one. This behavior was actually the inspiration for one of her books.

If Rune could talk, what do you think he would say? Let’s train or let’s play!!

Is there anything Rune doesn’t like or is afraid of? Rune hates when we go anywhere without her. She wants to be a part of everything we do. Especially when it comes to her 17 month old human baby brother. She always wants to be by his side or watching over him.

What advice would you give to others considering getting a pet like yours? My advice is for anyone wanting to get a dog in general. Please, research the breed or breeds in the dog you are considering. Make sure your household and lifestyle can meet the needs of that particular breed (exercise, grooming requirements, is the breed good with children/other animals, etc.) Don’t get a high energy breed if you prefer to just lounge around. Get your dog into training early! All this will prevent animals from ending up in shelters.

www.CentralFloridaLifestyle.com 49

Mia Valentina

What breed is Mia?: American short hair mixed with domestic short hair

Tell us how Mia became part of your family: For a while now my son Mateo has been wanting to have a pet. His preference has always been cats, so we started looking to adopt. My friend’s cat had kittens and she gave us Mia when she was four months old. Then, at six months old, last October, Mia participated in a Chick-fil-A Halloween pet event and won third place

How has Mia changed your life for the better? Mia Valentina has brought a lot of peace to our home. She is very sweet, an excellent companion, and very aware of everything we do. When any of us gets sick, she takes care of us and kneads with her paws on our body to relieve our discomfort. We include her in all family celebrations and even dress her in the same color outfit.

Does Mia have any unique habits or quirks? Yes, every day she wakes us up at dawn, licking our hands or feet and meowing. Then she loves to get on the window’s hammock to watch the neighbors in the building. She plays a lot during the mornings and loves to get under the comforter.

If Mia could talk, what do you think he would say? “Mom, don’t take so many pictures of me”.

Is there anything Mia doesn’t like or is afraid of? She hates the noisy hair dryer. She hides in her litter box every time she hears it.

What advice would you give to others considering getting a pet like yours? Cats are great companions at home. Studies show that people with cats tend to be healthier and happier than those who don’t have them, but having a cat is a big responsibility, a lifelong commitment, and when you love them, you treat them like a child.
