Champagne
Cocktails 101 Your guide to making the bubbly, boozy beverage that we’re all into right now. By Lyndsay Fogarty
W
hat’s more refreshing than an ice-cold cocktail when you’re sitting poolside on a hot day? One with some bubbly in it. Lucky for all of us, Champagne cocktails are in. I’m not talking about mimosas here, although the brunch staple is the OG Champagne cocktail. I’m referring more to the French 75s and the Aperol Spritzes of the world. Yes, I know an Aperol Spritz is made with sparkling wine, not Champagne, but it’s still part of this cocktail category. The beauty of these bubbly cocktails is they can be as low key or as high maintenance as you want them to be. And if you don’t have Champagne on hand, any sparkling wine will do. It’s all about preference. “Simplicity is the key,” says Matt Hadley, general manager for The Vineyard Wine Bar & Healthy Bistro in Windermere. “Just like food, with any drink it’s important to find ingredients that complement each other.” That means fresh juices, herbs and fragrant garnishes that will enhance both the taste and the presentation of the drink. Consider the notes of the sparkling wine or what type of additional liquor you’re in-

cluding when deciding on the other ingredients. Consider basil or rosemary if you’re adding gin to your cocktail or a wedge of lemon or lime for a garnish (add in the juice if you wish) when you want to balance out a sweeter wine. “The perfect garnish will not only enhance the overall look of the cocktail, but it also creates complexity in a drink through the senses,” Hadley says. Of course, your bubbly cocktail doesn’t have to include an additional liquor, but if you choose to go for it, Hadley says vodka is the most common addition. This could be because it’s essentially a blank canvas when not flavored. Grand Marnier is also a popular enhancement. When it comes to the bubbly, Prosecco and non-vintage Champagnes work well with the majority of these cocktails because they’re light, mild and refreshing, according to Hadley. Finally, whether you’re using a wine glass or a Champagne flute, go big with the glassware to dress up your cocktail. Hadley says, “Have fun with the glassware, as it is the canvas to your drink art.” Cheers to a bubbly beach season!

ARE YOU READY FOR
HURRICANE SEASON? Consider these tips to ensure that your home and your loved ones are prepared for the 2019 hurricane season.
4 WAYS TO PREPARE FOR A STORM NOW
A
s of last month, researchers at Colorado State University are predicting that the 2019 hurricane season will have slightly below-normal activity. They are anticipating 13 named storms, five hurricanes and two major hurricanes. No matter how much activity is predicted by weather experts, it’s important to prepare the same way for every hurricane season. You know that you need to stock your emergency kits with food, water, flashlights, batteries and all other storm essentials. But what else should you do now to ensure you’re fully prepared from the beginning of June through the end of November?
• Write or Review Your Family’s Emergency Plan: Jot down information about how to get in touch with each other in an emergency, where you will go and your best evacuation route. Designate a safe room to use if you’re not required to evacuate and will be riding out the storm at home. It should be a small interior room, closet or hallway on your home’s lowest level. Try to keep as many walls between you and the outside as possible. • Check Your Insurance Policies: It’s important to ensure that you will be covered for anything related to a natural disaster, including flooding. Be sure to prepare your home and vehicles in accordance with your insurance policies so any damages will be covered. Also, walk around your entire home now and take photos of everything, from expensive items like televisions and computers to clothing items and dishes. Open drawers and cabinets to document all items.
10
Central Florida Lifestyle | May 2019
Doing this ahead of a storm allows you to prove ownership of these items to your insurance company should you need to file a claim, something that could be nearly impossible to do when the damage has already been done. • Gather and Store Important Documents: Birth certificates, social security cards and insurance policies should be kept in a safe place year-round, but move them to a plastic bag or other waterproof storage container when a storm is heading your way. Many hotels will ask for health documents for your pet if you need a room during an evacuation, so keep a copy of their shot records with your important paperwork. • Prepare the Outside of Your Home: Trim your trees well in advance of a storm, removing any trees or limbs that are damaged. Additionally, clean and secure all gutters to avoid flooding.
WATCH OUT FOR YOUR ROOF Courtesy of EagleHawk
A
home’s roof is one of the main concerns for individuals living in hurricane-prone areas. If wind is able to penetrate any weak areas on a roof during a storm then homeowners are at risk of severe damage. EagleHawk One Inc., also known as “EagleHawk,” is a company that leverages mechanical engineering, data analytics, infrared technologies and the efficiencies gained from unmanned aerial systems, or drones, to serve clients across the nation with their building envelope inspections and preventative maintenance efforts. In a space once ruled by costly helicopters, as well as dangerous and often inaccurate hand-held surveillance, EagleHawk has been acclaimed as a formidable industry disrupter, as well as the preeminent provider of drone-powered analytics. Here in the southeast, where tropical cyclones rule the property management world, EagleHawk is using its technologies to help clients get ready for hurricane season. EagleHawk flies infrared scanning drones above client rooftops prior to storm season to establish a baseline, prestorm condition and report. Then after the first storm of the season, or after the end of the season itself (whichever
comes first), EagleHawk scans the same roofs with its infrared sensors to establish the “delta” condition. This shows irrefutably what damage is related to weather as opposed to owner negligence or neglect. These technologies, and the reports that EagleHawk authors, have allowed clients to fend off insurance scrutiny when the worstcase scenarios come to unfortunate fruition. Now is the time to think about scheduling this service to achieve peace of mind with your roof during this hurricane season.

HOW TO EAT HEALTHY DURING THE STORM
W
hen you’re in the direct path of a hurricane, it’s understandable that you might be tempted to stress eat. Most hurricane kits are full of heavily processed guilty pleasure items, so it’s easy to indulge. But even though you’re stuck at home monitoring weather reports, that doesn’t mean you need to get off track with your diet. Skip the junk food when preparing your hurricane supply kit, especially if you know you don’t have the willpower to avoid demolishing a whole sleeve of Oreos or can of Pringles, and stock up with healthy choices. Here are some ideas for healthier items that you can include. High-protein items: • Canned tuna or salmon • Canned beans • Unsalted nuts Supplemental items: • Apples and oranges • Dried fruit with no added sugars • Low-sodium canned vegetables in a variety of colors • Whole grain bread (make sure you can see the grains) • Whole grain cereal • Low sodium, natural peanut butter You can get creative with many of these items when it’s time to prepare a meal. Make a bean salad by mixing
together chickpeas, black beans, kidney beans, green beans, corn and canned tuna. Toss it with olive oil, salt, pepper, garlic powder and chili flakes if you like a little bit of heat. Consider substituting grilled chicken if you have a way to properly store the leftovers. Snacks can include sliced apples sprinkled with cinnamon or dipped in peanut butter. If you have cheese on hand that you need to get rid of because of a power outage risk, make a cheese plate with unsalted nuts, dried fruit and whole-grain crackers like Triscuits. When you plan ahead, you can avoid the last-minute run to the store for Pop-Tarts and hot dogs and instead stock up with items that you don’t have to feel guilty about when the storm has passed.
DEALING WITH PET ANXIETY DURING A STORM
H
ave you ever found your dog hiding under your bed or in the back of your closet during a thunderstorm? That’s because the drop in barometric pressure, as well as loud thunder claps and bright flashes of lightning, can be frightening for them. There are some things you can do to keep your dog comfortable during a storm. Consider dressing them in a Thundershirt when the weather gets bad. It applies gentle, constant pressure that is comforting to your pet. You might also try wrapping them in their favorite blanket and keeping them close if you don’t have one on hand. Stock your hurricane kit with puppy pads so you don’t need to take your dog outside during a storm. Sometimes their anxiety is heightened when they have to go out in bad weather and they can’t fully empty their bladder. Ask your vet about CBD oil and other anxiety remedies. Do not give your dog any medications or supplements that you haven’t approved with your vet first.

Revocable vs. Irrevocable
Trusts
Learn how to protect your family’s assets when a parent has remarried.
Q:
When my biological father and stepmother first set up their revocable living trust last year, my father said, as his trust, it gifts the family vacation lakefront home from his first marriage to me, his biological daughter of that marriage. Recently, my father passed and my stepmother advised me that she is no longer in agreement with gifting me the lake home. She is now planning to sell it for her own individual financial gain and benefit. Can my stepmother simply ignore my father’s wishes and sell the lakefront home, thereby depriving me from receiving it?
By Kristen M. Jackson, Jackson Law P.A.
A:
A revocable trust is a method of protecting assets from probate after the death of the grantors of the trust. If a married couple establishes a revocable living trust in which both spouses are the grantors of the trust, its specific language will dictate whether it becomes irrevocable upon the death of one of the spouses or upon the death of the second spouse. If both spouses must die before the trust becomes irrevocable then control of a joint revoKristen M. Jackson is the founding partner of Jackson Law PA (407-363-9020). cable trust automatically rolls over to the surviving spouse. A couple may choose to make a trust irrevocable at the passing of one of the grantors if they’re concerned that the surviving spouse may make changes for his or her own individual gain or change the beneficiaries, particularly with the intention to disinherit a particular beneficiary. Another concern would be that a spouse might be convinced to make changes to the trust under the influence of another individual, such as a new spouse or a beneficiary of the trust. So, to answer your question, unless your father set up an individual irrevocable trust in his name only that owned the lake house or included language within the joint revocable trust giving you the lakefront home at his death even if your stepmother survived him, then your stepmother
would not be entitled to sell it. Because the revocable trust is designed to protect assets from probate and to reduce the taxes paid by the estate, the trust should be set up by an attorney with experience in revocable trusts. A couple’s attorney should be able to draft language within the trust to prepare for every possible contingency regarding how the trust assets will be managed upon the death of the first spouse and after the death of both spouses. If children of a previous marriage are concerned about protecting assets acquired by their parent prior to remarrying, they should consult with their parent or collectively meet with an estate planning attorney. This will help them understand the potential consequences of a parent remarrying and how family assets may be lost without proper planning.

WHAT TO KNOW WHEN TRAVELING WHILE PREGNANT By Christine C. Greves, MD, Orlando Health Winnie Palmer Hospital for Women & Babies
T
he average pregnancy lasts about 40 weeks— that’s approximately 10 months. It’s not unusual that you might need to travel within that time. One of the best strategies is to make your plans in advance so you and your baby stay comfortable and safe. CAN I TRAVEL DURING PREGNANCY? If you have a low-risk pregnancy, being away from your doctor or being subjected to the stress of traveling may not cause concern. However, your doctor may advise you to stay home if you have preterm labor, bleeding, complications or an illness that makes you high-risk, in case you need medical attention or need to deliver early. WHEN CAN I TRAVEL? Most women with low-risk pregnancies can travel until early in the third trimester. Since morning sickness usually eases by the second trimester, these mid-pregnancy months may be the most comfortable. During the third trimester, complications and preterm labor are more likely, increasing your risk while you’re away. If you’re flying after your 24th week, make sure your travel destination is one

you wouldn’t mind staying in if you need medical attention, bed rest or if your baby comes early. TRAVEL TIPS • Move your legs frequently to avoid blood clots. If it’s safe to get up and move about, take short walks to keep blood flowing. • Pack drinks and healthy snacks. Take an empty refillable bottle to stay hydrated. Pack portable foods made of proteins or complex carbohydrates. • Keep medications nearby. Pack them in your carry-on bag instead of in your checked luggage. • Avoid travel to areas with health dangers that may put you and your baby at risk. • When traveling internationally, ensure food and water are safe. Eat cooked meals and drink bottled water. • Remember to rest. Although it may be tempting to pack your schedule, it’s important to listen to your body so you don’t become overly tired. HOW TO SPOT SKIN CANCER By Lyndsay Fogarty
T
his time of year, the beach or the pool is likely calling your name. Make sure you're protecting your skin from the sun any time you're outdoors. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, one in five Americans will be diagnosed with skin cancer in their lifetime. There are two types: nonmelanoma, such as basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. Melanoma is the deadliest form of skin cancer but is treatable when caught early. Skin cancer can develop anywhere on the body and is one of the few cancers you can see on the skin. A skin care self-examination can help you find any worrisome spots early. Here are some tips: 1. E xamine your front and back in the mirror, then the right and left sides, with arms raised 2. Examine the back of your neck and scalp with a hand mirror. Part hair for a closer look at your scalp. 3. Bend elbows, look carefully at forearms, back of upper arms and palms. 4. C heck your back and buttocks with a hand mirror. 5. F inally, look backs of legs and feet, spaces between toes and soles.
During your selfexamination, you're looking for specific identifying signs in a spot. This includes asymmetry; an irregular, scalloped or poorly defined border; varied colors from one area to another that could include tan, brown, black and sometimes white, red or blue; a diameter of greater than 6 mm (think: a pencil eraser) although they could be smaller; and changes in size, shape or color. PAIN THAT POINTS TO ENDOMETRIOSIS By John Tramont, MD, UCF Health
M
any women experience pain in and around the uterus, especially during menstruation. However, pain that isn’t relieved with overthe-counter pain medication, pain that increases over time, or pain with intercourse or when using the bathroom can indicate endometriosis, a condition in which tissue that is similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside of the uterus. According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, up to 75% of women with abdominal pain may have the disorder. Additionally, 10% of women have endometriosis and many go undiagnosed and untreated for years. Endometriosis shouldn’t be ignored. The pain can be debilitating and often interrupts daily activities. There are also other health impacts, such as higher infertility risks or bowel dysfunction. Knowing and understanding the symptoms and risk factors is important to your overall health. Here are some things to look out for: ABNORMAL MENSTRUATION This is a common sign of endometriosis and can include periods that are notably heavy, irregular or painful. Spotting between periods can also be an indication of the disorder. In some cases, pain during menstruation will worsen over time, often leading to diagnosis in a woman’s 30s and 40s. If you notice more painful periods than you have had in the past, let your doctor know. PAIN DURING OR AFTER INTERCOURSE Another symptom associated with endometriosis is pain in the uterus or abdomen during or after sex. The pain is sometimes so severe that patients avoid sexual contact. Don’t assume the pain is normal. Tell your doctor.

GI ISSUES Pain in the abdomen and lower back as well as pain during urination and bowel movements, especially when on your period, are also common symptoms. Diarrhea, constipation, bloating, painful cramping and nausea during menses can be associated with endometriosis. A possible but less common GI issue associated with the disorder is rectal bleeding while menstruating.

RISK FACTORS Any woman can develop the disorder, but several risk factors can increase your chances. Awareness of the risk factors and symptoms can help you distinguish between normal menstrual pain and endometriosis. Risk factors to keep in mind include having a family history of endometriosis, starting your period at a young age or menopause at an older age, and infertility. While the cause of endometriosis isn’t fully understood, addressing risk factors may help limit the disease’s impact. If you believe you may be at risk for endometriosis, talk to your doctor about taking preventative measures and monitoring any symptoms you may develop. You don’t have to live with the pain and discomfort. Although endometriosis can’t be cured, it can be managed. If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, visit your gynecologist, who can diagnose the condition and help you get back to your daily life. Learn more at ucfhealth.com

4 Rules to Follow While
Ride Sharing Familiarize yourself with these safety tips before jumping your next Uber or Lyft. By John Tramont, MD, into UCF Health
T
hese days, calling an Uber during a night out is as natural as brushing your teeth or putting on your makeup. Since it’s such a common experience, it’s easy to let your guard down when you request a ride because you’re comfortable. The death of 21-year-old Samantha Josephson on March 29 is a sad reminder to always be aware of your surroundings when using ride-sharing services. Many women worry that they will come off as rude or judgmental if they take extra precautions to ensure their safety while ride sharing. However, safety should always come first. There are several simple things you can do to stay safe from the time you call your ride to the time you reach your destination. Request your ride inside: Plan ahead and submit your Uber or Lyft request when you’re ready to leave your location but before you walk out the door to limit your time alone outside. Only leave the building when you’re notified of your ride’s arrival. Also, make sure to arrange
24
Central Florida Lifestyle | May 2019
for pickup in an area that allows you enough time to confirm that you are getting into the right vehicle. Verify your driver: Before you get into the vehicle, ask the driver what their name is and double check his or her photo and the car’s make, model and license plate against the information in the app to make sure it matches up. Then ask them to confirm your name. It’s as simple as asking, “Who are you here to pick up?” Share your trip: Both the Uber and Lyft apps include a feature that allows you to share your trip with a friend or family member once you’re en route so they can track you on GPS until you arrive at your destination. They will be able to see your driver’s name, photo, license plate and your exact location throughout the ride. Following these tips can help to keep you safe while using a ridesharing service, but it’s also important to travel in groups when possible and look out for each other.
Don’t Forget to Check the Child Locks One of the scariest details of Josephson’s case is that she couldn’t escape from the vehicle because the suspect had the child locks on. This is something that is very easy to check when you open the door to an Uber or Lyft vehicle. Even better, if you see that they’re on, you can easily turn them off without the driver knowing. A vehicle’s child locks can be found on the outer edge of the back passenger doors and their look will differ slightly depending on the car. Just make sure the lever, switch or twist lock is turned to the off position before you enter the vehicle.

4 Ways to Achieve the
Farmhouse Feel How to style your home with a farmhouse design that integrates both classic and modern elements. By Lyndsay Fogarty and Lauren Margolis
H
omeowners looking to design a space to feel comfortable and cozy tend to lean toward the farmhouse look with its rustic features and homey accents. Through the years, farmhouse designs have changed to include more modern elements and updated color palettes, making it a timeless look that won’t go out of style. Here are some classic elements of the farmhouse design that are easy to include in any space of your home.
Neutral Colors
When you think of the farmhouse trend, you probably think of white, which is typically the dominant shade in this type of design. Modern farmhouse designs also include accent colors in neutral shades. Think gray, navy blue or any light pastel. Gray is a popular color in homes because it represents peace and balance, and blue is considered a color that makes individuals feel relaxed. Either one makes for a beautiful neutral for a farmhouse kitchen or bedroom.
Shiplap Walls
While shiplap originally defined coastal-inspired decor, this design element has become popular in the farmhouse look as well. In a shiplap design, wooden boards are fit together to add texture to a space in an informal way. It’s most often applied horizontally in modern designs, but it can also be
26
Central Florida Lifestyle | May 2019
installed vertically to elongate a space. The beauty of shiplap is that it can go anywhere — on one wall or four, on the ceiling and in any room of a home.
Barn Doors
Besides shiplap, nothing screams farmhouse more than adding a barn door to a space. This door choice works in any room of a home, but don’t overdo it. Make it a statement piece in one room. For example, install a sliding barn door in your living room to separate the space from the dining area or in your master bedroom to lead into the bathroom. You can really make a statement by choosing a barn door for your closet door.
Metallic Accents
Metal accents are one of the defining elements of a farmhouse design. Choosing copper light fixtures or cabinet hardware is an easy way to provide a warm touch to any space. In the kitchen, copper range hoods above the stove, and especially copper sinks, are trendy farmhouse elements. When you’re decorating a bedroom or bathroom, find a beautiful copper mirror to hang as an accent piece. You don’t have to include all of these elements when you’re designing your space. Do your research, decide what you like and roll with it.

How to Finally Get
Better Sleep During Better Sleep Month, use these tips and tricks to get a more restful night’s sleep. By Lauren Margolis
M
ay is Better Sleep Month, so there’s no better time to get a full night’s sleep than now. According to the Better Sleep Council, which educates the public about the relationship between sleep, good health and quality of life, getting seven to eight hours of sleep a night can make you feel more energized, help you concentrate more easily and maintain a healthy weight. These tips may help you catch some extra Zzz’s without having to count sheep.
Choose the Right Mattress
Your mattress is the single biggest factor in how well you sleep every night. If you have been sleeping on your mattress for more than seven years then it’s time for a replacement. Waking up with aches and pains is a sign that your mattress has worn down and lost the support it should be providing. Lumps and dents in the mattress are also an indication that it’s time for a new one. BSC also recommends that you replace your pillows every year to be certain they are providing the proper neck and spine support.
Make an Appointment with Sleep
Make sleep a priority by deciding when you’re going to bed and sticking
28

to it. Consistency is key so your body can get used to a schedule. Your bedroom should also be an oasis that is free of distractions, so consider setting a curfew for electronic use. The National Sleep Foundation says that watching TV or using a smartphone or laptop before bed can delay your body’s internal clock. Staring at the screen’s blue light suppresses the release of melatonin, making it harder to fall asleep. NSF recommends cutting out the electronics as early as two hours before bed.
You might think that hitting the snooze button is giving you more sleep, but it’s doing the opposite. Stop Hitting Snooze
You might think that hitting the snooze button is giving you more sleep, but it’s doing the opposite. If you’re a constant snoozer, you’re breaking up your restful sleep, which is making you feel more tired during the day. Set a rule to wake up and stay up. Conditioning yourself to get up
at the first alarm will give you more time to get ready and start your day. You might also find that you feel more rested.
The Power of Scent
Try using essential oils to help you sleep better. BSC notes that fragrances like lavender, vanilla and jasmine have proven calming effects. Lavender has also been shown to reduce anxiety and lower blood pressure, heart rate and skin temperature. Just place your essential oils in a diffuser in your bedroom and soak up the effects of a better night’s sleep. You can even sprinkle a few drops of the oil on your pillow before bed. It’s the perfect recipe for a good night’s sleep!

Laser & Light Therapy
WDMS medical providers will scan, evaluate and track your progress through a VISIA Complexion Analysis System. This system will read and reveal wrinkles, texture, pores, UV damage, red areas and brown spots to help determine which laser treatments are best for you. Some of the treatment options include: Halo: The first hybrid fractional laser that shrinks pores, stimulates collagen, tightens skin and improves wrinkles, texture, tone, dark spots and UV damage. Forever Young BBL: Broadband light technology rejuvenates the skin,
gets rid of redness or broken blood vessels and unwanted pigmentation from sun damage without downtime. This is often combined with Halo to slow down and reverse the aging process. SkinTyte: Delivers light-based energy to the face and body in a sequence of rapid yet gentle pulses to make the skin tighter and more youthful, providing a healthier appearance. Forever Bare BBL: Hair removal via a cooled sapphire plate that delivers light and cools the skin. Forever Clear BBL: A revolutionary acne treatment that uses light to remove acne without creams or internal medicines. After a series of treatments you’re left with healthier, clearer skin. NanoLaser Peel: Also known as the “Weekend Peel,” this treatment uses precise depths to create wonderfully luminous skin.
These procedures are extremely safe and most require very little recovery time compared to older technology. “Achieving youthful and healthylooking skin doesn’t have to be a painful and time-consuming experience,” PA Kennedy says. “Clients say they look about 10 years younger after having just one Halo/BBL treatment.”

Signature Filler Injection Technique
PA Kennedy has traveled the world collaborating with and educating healthcare providers. She is well-known for her blunt-tip cannula injection techniques. Since a cannula cannot pierce the skin, a very small needle is required to make an entry point for the cannula, which allows it to pass through the skin. The smoothtipped cannula can re-enter the same entry point without causing discomfort to clients. WDMS offers medical-grade nitrous oxide through the ProNox delivery system. It is self-administered for controlled comfort. “When we combine cannulas and ProNox during filler treatments, clients rave about how happy and relaxed they feel. They even look forward to their next visit,” PA Kennedy says.

3 Basic Brunch Party Ideas
These ideas will help you host a memorable brunch for your girlfriends at home. By Lyndsay Fogarty
W
ho doesn’t love brunch? The time sipping mimosas with girlfriends energizes you for the week ahead. So when you have something to celebrate, whether it’s a holiday or a milestone event, consider hosting a brunch party at home.
1. Set up a build-your-own bar for the beverages. Whether you go for a mimosa station with a variety of juices or a Bloody Mary bar with a selection of liquors and accompaniments, you can set up a beverage station and forget about it. A coffee bar is also a nice option because it can be arranged for guests who want alcohol (just add Baileys or Kahlua) and for guests who don’t (make several cream and sugar choices available).
32
Central Florida Lifestyle | May 2019
2. Don’t be afraid to serve premade goodies. Simply arrange a selection of croissants and pastries on a serving dish so guests can snack before the main event. Added carbs are always welcome at brunch. 3. Serve family style. Many hostesses do a buffet brunch, but serving the meal family style at the table creates a more intimate setting. Plan for one main dish, such as a French toast casserole or quiche, then include several sides, like a fruit and cheese plate and a potato hash with veggies, to give your guests variety. No matter what you decide to serve or how you decide to serve it, a brunch party is the perfect way to celebrate any occasion.
• 1 loaf brioche bread, preferably a few days old • 2 bananas, sliced • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon • 2 tablespoon brown sugar • 3 large eggs • 3/4 cup milk • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla • Kosher salt •2 tablespoon salted or unsalted butter •T he Fresh Market Dark Chocolate Sauce • Whipped cream Directions: Cut six, 1-inch slices of brioche bread (not using the ends), and carefully slice a pocket down the center, 3/4 of the way through the bread. Toss sliced bananas with cinnamon and brown sugar and stuff equal amounts inside each pocket. In a small bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, vanilla and a generous pinch of salt. Heat butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Dip each French toast piece in egg mixture, making sure both sides are moist. Place French toast in pan and cook until lightly browned on both sides. Remove from skillet and repeat with remaining pieces. (If you’re cooking the French toast one at a time, place finished pieces in a preheated 200°F oven to keep warm.) Drizzle each piece with warmed chocolate sauce and a dollop of whipped cream. Serve immediately.

What You Need to Know about Pelvic Pain How you can work with your doctor to deal with the symptoms and pain associated with endometriosis. By Steven McCarus, MD, FACOG, AdventHealth Medical Group
W
hile one in every 10 women between the ages of 15 and 44 experience endometriosis, most don’t realize that severe pain during their periods isn’t normal. For many women, the path to finding effective relief is met with great challenges, but, there is hope.
Endometriosis Explained
Endometriosis is a condition that occurs when the lining of the uterus (called the endometrium) grows outside of the uterus. Endometrial tissues may grow in the fallopian tubes, around the ovaries or in other areas of the abdomen. Even though the endometrial tissue grows outside the uterus, it acts just like it would while in the uterus. During your menstrual cycle, the tissue gets thick, then sheds and bleeds. Since there is nowhere for the blood and lining to go, it stays in your body, irritating the cells around it. The irritated cells can form scar tissue and adhesions that cause your pelvic organs to stick together.
You’re Not Alone
Endometriosis is a very common, yet completely misunderstood, disease. It affects women in the prime of their life in reproductive years, interfering with attempts to live an active and healthy lifestyle, fertility and interpersonal relationships. Steven McCarus, MD, FACOG, is a boardcertified and internationally recognized OB/GYN surgeon and the Chief of Gynecological Surgery at AdventHealth Celebration and Winter Park. He is known for his development of the McCarus Hysterectomy Technique, which physicians routinely travel from across the country to learn from him. To schedule an appointment, call our Women’s Health Navigator at 407-720-5191.

Symptoms
Endometriosis can be very painful and worsen during your menstrual cycle. The pain may even get worse over time, with every period you have. You may also experience other symptoms, such as: • Bloating • Constipation or diarrhea • Fatigue • Heavy bleeding during periods • Infertility • Pain when you use the bathroom If you have heavy, painful periods, talk with your doctor about the possibility of endometriosis since early detection may help you achieve better outcomes. It’s important for women and providers to realize that diagnosing and aggressively treating endometriosis early can help women prevent surgery. Endometriosis needs to be found and treated in the earliest stages, not ignored to the point at which surgery is mandatory.
Diagnosis and Treatment
If you have symptoms of endometriosis, your doctor may order a diagnos-
tic test like an ultrasound or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to look for signs of endometriosis in your pelvis, or recommend laparoscopy, a minimally invasive surgical procedure, to detect it. Recently, medical therapy with a gonadotrophin-releasing hormone (GnRH) agonist has been approved by the FDA to reduce moderate to severe pain associated with endometriosis. I’m seeing great success in many women that are being treated with this therapy. As we understand the inflammatory association with endometriosis and known cellular differences between uterus and endometriosis, it is incumbent on us to treat the disease more aggressively with medical therapies that decrease estrogen production. Endometriosis is a known estrogen-dependent disease. While surgery is an option for many patients, it should be a last-resort treatment, with medical therapies being tried initially. With state-of-the-art surgical suites and technology, doctors can use minimally invasive techniques while offering better outcomes for the patient in reducing long-term pain.

Support for Superwoman These simple tips can take the pressure off of Mom so she feels her best all year-round. By Olivia Sain, Staying Sain
T
his May is the 70th anniversary of Mental Health Month, an observance led by Mental Health America to start a conversation within communities across the country. Did you know that one in five adults in the United States will experience a mental illness? It doesn’t discriminate by age, race or gender. Students, successful career men and women, parents, nonparents — mental health issues can arise for anyone. I’m not a mother myself, but I truly believe being a mother is the hardest job in the world. There are no set hours or days off. You are on call 24/7. Nothing prepares you for this role, so you have to hit the ground running. The minute your child enters the world, you are their protector, teacher and a fulltime caregiver. Then add the responsibilities of a full-time job, household chores and finding the time to nurture your relationships. You have now become Superwoman! However, this schedule cannot keep up for long before your physical and mental well-being declines. Moms are sleep deprived, stressed and some are even caretakers for a family member. Between our electronic devices and social media, there is an added pressure to be perfect, although life should never be a competition.
Olivia Sain is a published author, speaker and writer at Staying Sain. A philanthropist and a University of Central Florida graduate, she is the founder of Sain’s Stuffed Giving and the Butterfly Talks.

Moms tend to put their own health and needs on the back burner, instead focusing on the needs of their family. Eventually, they feel burnt out with effects that include sleep deprivation, chronic sickness, low patience levels and anxiety. So, how do we make a change for the better? Most importantly, start putting yourself first. This can be difficult when others rely on you, but making your needs a priority allows you to be the best person you can be for them. Sleep, nutrition and exercise are usually the first three things that people don’t maintain in their everyday life. Shifting to this new mindset could be as simple as making sure you get enough sleep every night and using that gym membership you’ve been paying for or it could be as indulgent as scheduling a monthly facial or nail appointment. Additionally, ask for help when you need it. Recruit friends or family members who can take the kids for an afternoon or an evening so you can recharge. Utilize services that make your life easier such as grocery delivery services or dogwalking apps, even if it’s a splurge for your family. Get the kids involved with small tasks around the house to help you out as well. It’s the little things that can help relieve the pressure and anxiety you may feel. Your child’s presence may be the best present you could have as a mom, but consider giving yourself the gift of metime on a regular basis to boost your overall mental health and wellness.

The Clear Way to a Confident Smile Find out if a clear aligner treatment plan is right for you.
A
beautiful smile can help you feel more confident, and there's nothing that Dr. Jason Battle of Premiere Orthodontics loves more than helping boost the confidence of his patients through every stage of their lives. From school photos to graduation day, he has it covered. Dr. Battle partners with his patients to create their perfect smile. At his cosmetically driven practice, he customizes each treatment plan based on the patient’s individual needs to straighten their teeth quickly and affordably without anyone noticing. After learning about their treatment goals, Dr. Battle develops a plan using clear aligners like Invisalign, 3M and ClearCorrect with minimal assistance from traditional braces. With a simple, one-minute scan using the world’s fastest scanner, Dr. Battle creates digital models of a patient’s teeth. He then alters the models on a computer to design their new smile. The final digital production allows the patient to see the outcome before the treatment plan even begins. After the digital models are approved, they are sent to a lab so the clear aligners can be fabricated. “It’s a better fit for all of the retainers and appliances,” Dr. Battle says of the scanner. “It also has a faster turnaround time, which means the patient can start the treatment sooner.” 38
Central Florida Lifestyle | May 2019
With the traditional method for the clear aligner treatment plan, the aligners are changed out every two to three weeks. Using the accelerated method, the total treatment time is cut in half. Even complex surgical cases involving major under bites and over bites can be handled with the same treatment plan as more simple orthodontics cases. “In the past, patients would often need around two years of traditional ‘metal’ braces. We’ve cut that down to about three months, and that’s if they are even necessary,” Dr. Battle explains. Even better, patients don’t need to visit the office as much for maintenance. However, they still need to schedule regular in-office appointments or virtual consultations so Dr. Battle can check their progress and transition them through each stage of the treatment. This should occur every four to six months compared to every six to 10 weeks with traditional braces. “My patients can reach their smile goals faster with the accelerated treatment plan, and I’m there for them every step of the way,” Dr. Battle says. “I’ll do whatever it takes to get them to happiness.” One thing is clear: Dr. Battle is committed to creating beautiful smiles for his patients quickly, boosting their confidence for the milestones that matter most.
What's New at Premiere Orthodontics Dr. Battle understands that life can get busy and office visits aren't always easy to schedule. That's why he now offers HIPPA-compliant virtual consultations instead. It's simple. 1. Use your cell phone to text six photos of your teeth. Sample photos are available on the Premiere Orthodontics website. 2. Include your name, email address, concerns for your teeth and a photo of your dental insurance card if you need to verify information. 3. Dr. Battle will review and follow up with you.

Beauty GUIDE Discover the makeup and beauty trends that will keep you looking your best.
HOW TO APPLY THE NATURAL SKIN TREND By Tommy Berry
W
ith natural skin being very prevalent this spring, it can be hard to appear natural when using fullcoverage products. One way to go about this is by using faux freckles. By lightly drawing on some freckles, it gives the impression that your natural skin is peeking through. This is a super easy trick that most people already have the tools to achieve. All you need is an eyebrow pencil, a brush or beauty sponge and about 30 seconds. STEP ONE: Lay down a base of foundation and/or concealer and set it with a powder as normal.
40
Central Florida Lifestyle | May 2019
STEP TWO: Take a brow pencil (whichever color you use on your brows) and press down very lightly across the nose bridge and under eye region. The freckles may look a little too dark at this point but the next step will take care of that. STEP THREE: Blend in the freckles using a powder brush (brushing swiftly across the dots) or beauty sponge (dabbing across the dots) to help them blend in with the skin to form a more natural appearance.
BEST PRODUCTS FOR YOUR SPRINGTIME ROUTINE By Tommy Berry
A
fter scrolling through Instagram or flipping through a magazine, it quickly becomes clear that glowy and sun-kissed skin is a big trend this spring. People are using less powders and layers to reveal a more “your skin but better” type of look. Here are some products that will help you achieve that spring glow without having to spend hours to get it. • Beauty Oil: Beauty oil is a staple for anyone who wants their makeup to have a natural radiance to it. You can add a drop to your foundation for some extra glow, lightly prime your face with it before beginning to apply your makeup, or even use it to make the makeup removal process easier. Ranging from $15-$200, there are tons of products on the market, so there is bound to be one that will work for you. Tip! Make sure that the oil is labeled as face safe. Many body and face oils are packaged similar, but body oil on the face can cause breakouts. • Cream Blush: Blush is something that a lot of people skip out on, and I used to be like that as well. Once you find a blush
shade that is perfect for your complexion, the chances of you ever skipping it again are slim to none. It helps by adding back some of the flushed color that foundation wipes away and making the skin look healthier. This spring, cream blushes have blown up because of their natural and buttery finish. Unlike powder blushes, creams melt into the skin to give the most perfectly natural tint. Because they are cream, they are to be applied before any powders to avoid any issues. • Clear Brow Gel: This may seem like something that is used year-round, and while that is true, it plays an especially big part in this spring’s “I just got back from my facial” look that everyone is after. We have watched the “ideal brow” evolve from the over-tweezed 2000s shape into the more recent “Instagram brow.” Right now, the more bold and defined brow is on its way out the door as people are swaying in the opposite direction. As of late, people have begun to minimize the time spent on brows. Adding little to no product at all and running some brow gel through them to help feather the hairs out has become increasingly popular. It’s easier, takes less time and shifts most of the focus onto your radiant skin.

BEAUTY TREATMENTS YOU HAVE TO TRY
By Lyndsay Fogarty
T
rendy beauty treatments come and go year in and year out. Some even stick around for a while. The following are in right now and can help keep your skin looking its best. When you think of hot stones in a beauty treatment, you probably think of a hot stone massage. However, a Hot Stone Facial brings the same soothing technique to the face and décolletage area. Not only does the warmth feel good on these sensitive areas but the heat stimulates circulation in the body and eases tension. IV Vitamin Therapy provides a boost of energy along with other health-related benefits. Individuals typically try this treatment for three reasons: wellness, beauty and sports performance. The uniting factor is hydration. Sending vitamins like B Complex and Vitamin C straight to the bloodstream ensures you get the most out of these nutrients, as gut issues that plague many Americans can affect the way vitamins are absorbed when taken in pill form. Using Fish Oil Supplements provides many benefits to the human body. It keeps the brain functioning the way it should, but it also benefits the skin. The omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oil supplements regulate oil production,

which, in turn, boosts the hydration of the skin, delays aging and prevents breakouts. If you’re not getting enough fish in your diet then you definitely want to start including fish oil supplements in your daily vitamin intake. With LED Light Therapy, the low-level energy in the light is able to penetrate the skin and be absorbed by it, resulting in skin rejuvenation, tissue repair and the stimulation of collagen. This unique therapy works for breakouts and can ease inflammation. The best part is that because the energy level is so low, the skin isn’t heated during a treatment, so it doesn’t cause thermal damage. Even more, different colors have different effects: blue works for breakouts, red reduces inflammation and stimulates collagen, and amber builds collagen and elastin.

hen construction began on Baldwin Park ER, a department of Oviedo Medical Center, in June 2018, the idea was to create a freestanding emergency department to provide around-the-clock, comprehensive care for adult and pediatric patients. Almost a year later, the facility is celebrating its opening this month. Located at the southeast corner of Hanging Moss Road and N. Semoran Boulevard, Baldwin Park ER, a department of Oviedo Medical Center, is a 10,358-square-foot, one-story facility that was designed to provide high-quality, convenient emergency healthcare services to the growing number of residents in Baldwin Park and surrounding communities in northeast Orange County. It will operate as a full-service emergency room, providing 24/7 emergency care as well as diagnostic imaging services, and is expected to serve more than 10,000 residents in Baldwin Park and the surrounding areas each year. “Oviedo Medical Center is thrilled to expand its high-quality care and services in our community,” says KC Donahey, CEO of Oviedo Medical Center. “This facility will help provide faster and

The facility is ideal for patients who have
acute emergency health issues that are too severe to wait for a regular doctor’s office hours. “When you’re experiencing a medical emergency in the middle of the night or when a health issue arises after your regular doctor’s office has closed, we will be here for you,” says Dr. Garrick Collins, lead physician at Baldwin Park ER. “Our staff is highly trained to handle any situation and we are dedicated to helping patients get back to living healthy lives.” Melissa Begg, manager of Baldwin Park ER, adds, “We’re looking forward to serving our neighbors in this community. Celebrating
Extraordinary Women COURTESY OF STINA D’UVA
The West Orange Chamber of Commerce’s president reflects on how her career opportunities blossomed into friendships and vice versa. By Stina D’Uva
S
everal years ago, after women business leaders in the West Orange Chamber of Commerce (WOCC) asked me to consider an event just for women, “Celebrating Extraordinary Women” was created. The concept was simple, bring accomplished women to an event to share their stories with other women, and the connecting will happen naturally. Three years into this program, we have showcased several extraordinary women, yet we have years to go and many more connections to make. Women connect differently than men and, because of that, it can be viewed as less professional. It’s rare that a man will approach another and comment on his shoes

or suit, yet a woman has no issue complimenting another on a fabulous outfit. It’s our way of making an instant connection. From that point, our conversations flow fast and naturally with commonalities found and fostered. When that happens, the true relationship building begins — professional or personal. Many have often said, “People do business with people they know, like and trust.” Friendships develop as well.

With that in mind, I went down memory lane and recalled how some of my closest friends and business colleagues became my friends. I call them extraordinary women, a phrase they would never
use to describe themselves. As I recollected, common traits became apparent. Their traits are compassion, tenacity, fearlessness and assertiveness. Most of all, they have determination and a commitment to make our community, piece by piece, a better place. These women didn’t embark on community issues with any aspiration for themselves to be recognized or seek prestigious titles. These women all said yes to solving problems rather than assuming someone else would handle them. I am pleased to surround myself with women leaders, my friends. Women like Karen Ardaman, a former Orange County Public Schools board member, who led the Rails to Trail initiative, which was an impetus for the West Orange Trail, prior to her

political career. Another friend, Teresa Jacobs, started on her path of community involvement because a road was slated to go through her backyard and split her subdivision in half. Even though she lost that fight, we all benefitted because it set her on her esteemed political path. Even though we met at different times, the three of us became friends because of our children and issues with our overcrowded schools. The commonalities forged a lasting friendship, though not by intention, yet circumstances start-

It turns out that our new roles brought new opportunities and women into our lives. Pam Gould is one whom I was fortunate to meet through the chamber’s Leadership West Orange program in 2000. I and many others saw her talent, experience and leadership, and we knew that she was the perfect candidate to run and be elected to the OCPS board. Just last month, Pam was hired to manage and lead Shepherd’s Hope, the perfect role for a woman with experience in the health care and philanthropic world. Another woman who has given service to our community for years, and has helped me over the years on many issues, is Betsy VanderLey. She now serves as county commissioner, chairwoman of MetroPlan, and board member on the Central Florida Expressway Authority. She is truly a champion of West Orange County. I could go on and on naming extraordinary women, yet I would

do a disservice to those I omit. Eileen Neumayer, owner of Classic Care of America and volunteer extraordinaire, who I also met because of our children and their schools, is one I must single out. Our interaction led my husband and I into joining the WOCC. That sole decision changed my world. That world, running the WOCC, allows me to meet wonderful people and work with a team of fabulous women. Again, I hate to single out, yet our Vice President, Krista Carter, has been at my side for 18 years. She is a woman I call extraordinary as well. She is the Florida Association of Chamber Professional’s 2015 Professional of the Year, former President of the Rotary Club of Winter Garden, two- time Paul Harris fellow and board member of the Oakland Nature Preserve. I named just a few of the women that have impacted my life and guided me on my path. Take the time to go down your memory lane and recall the women who have helped you on your journey. We should always consider ways to connect with one another and foster each other’s goals. Join me in September for the next Celebrating Extraordinary Women event.

very summer, the Center for Independent Living invites the community to celebrate the organization’s mission of creating fully inclusive and accessible communities where everyone can meaningfully contribute regardless of disability. This is done through its annual fundraiser, the Celebrating Independence Gala. Now in its fourth year, the gala will be held at The Alfond Inn, a boutique hotel in Winter Park that is known for its accessibility and partnership with CIL in hiring individuals with disabilities. The event is completely accessible for those with and without disabilities. “Our goal is to raise $40,000 with this event, which will go directly back to the programs and services CIL provides those with disabilities through-

out Central Florida,” Event Chair Amanda Watson says. “Programs like providing increased accessibility and independence through home modifications and durable medical equipment, assisting young adults living with disabilities in transitioning from school to adult life, helping those with disabilities find jobs.” This year’s gala will kick off with a cocktail hour and a silent auction before the ballroom doors open at 7:30 p.m. for a sit-down dinner and live entertainment. During a very special program, guests will have the opportunity to learn about the work that CIL does within the community to break down barriers for individuals with disabilities and to hear from someone who has been directly impacted by these efforts. The program will also include an awards ceremony that recognizes individuals and businesses who honor the legacy of CIL’s founder, Beverly Chapman. The Beverly Chapman Legacy Award will be presented to Sylvia Longmire, a service-disabled U.S. Air Force veteran, former Miss Wheelchair U.S.A. 2016, an accessible travel writer and author, and a disability rights advocate. Additionally, for the first time, the Champion Award will be presented to KMI International for their conscious effort to create opportunities for those with disabilities, setting them up for success and empowering them to live independently.
Throughout the evening, guests will receive a lanyard with a key for a $20 donation. At the conclusion of the gala, they will have the chance to unlock the treasure box for a chance to win a special prize. “Each year this event gets bigger,” Watson says. “It is great to see the corporate and community partners come together to celebrate disability inclusion and the increasing efforts to make Central Florida a more accessible place to live and work.”

for Caregivers The Alzheimer’s & Dementia Resource Center provides caregivers with the tools they need to successfully communicate and care for a loved one living with the illness. By Lyndsay Fogarty
A
s the chief of operations for the Alzheimer’s & Dementia Resource Center, Edith Gendron spins many plates. While she provides services for the center’s primary clientele, which is the at-home caregiver, she also works to develop programs with the State of Florida Brain Bank Research Study and collaborate with other community entities. ADRC’s mission is to be a resource for caregivers as they face one of the toughest jobs they will ever have. This includes offering support groups, single-topic workshops and six-week, evidence-based training to give caregivers the tools they need to help them control what’s going on in their world. “We view it as being out of control, and it is, but there are a lot of things in our environment that are within our control,” Gendron says. “We give them the tools they need to be more confident, peaceful and to seek joy in this journey. There is joy here, it’s just a different perspective to seek it out.” ADRC not only teaches caregivers to be more confident in their skills but it also provides a greater understanding of the illness. Showing a caregiver how to mitigate the severity 52

of symptoms through music, awareness of nutrition and the way that they communicate with their loved one can change their whole situation for the better. Gendron guides them through learning each piece of the puzzle, and when she sees them have a breakthrough, it makes it all worthwhile. “You shed tears almost every day,” she says. “Even me, who truly thinks that there’s somehow a greater message that we’re still not getting with these diseases. I can just be reduced to a sobbing mess watching what happens to someone.” Gendron says she counter balances that with the fact that she’s working with a magnificent person who has contributed so much to the community. It’s important for her and for the caregivers she works with to look for new meaning and a new perspective as the illness progresses. She shares the story of a man living with the illness who helped to boost her confidence when she was feeling uncomfortable. As Gendron prepared for someone to take her photo, she expressed how horrible she thought she looked. The man stopped her, put up his hand and told her she looked just fine.
“That’s the beauty,” she says. “In my distress, someone with an illness that’s supposed to take them away saw my distress and did something about it. He gave me a gift. That’s what I try hard to give our caregivers.”

child’s only worries should be what time recess is and what games they should play, but what happens when they have bigger worries on their shoulders? According to the American Cancer Society, almost 11,000 children in the United States who are under age 15 will be diagnosed with cancer this year. Runway to Hope, a Central Florida based nonprofit, makes sure families dealing with pediatric cancer aren’t fighting alone. Mark and Josie Nejame founded Runway to Hope in 2010. Through partnerships with children’s hospitals, the organization brings together corporations, local businesses and philanthropists to raise funds and awareness while bringing new programs and initiatives to the pediatric cancer community and providing direct support to families impacted by pediatric cancer. Hope has raised approximately $6 million and has provided funding for programs at each of Central Florida’s three children’s hospitals as well as financial assistance for local families impacted by pediatric cancer through its Family Assistance Program. Runway to Hope’s signature fundraising event, now called The Adam Michael Rosen Foundation presents Runway to Hope’s Spring Soiree, is a major contributor to the organization’s efforts. This year, it will be held on May 18 at the Rosen Shingle Creek Resort with hosts Daymond John of “Shark Tank,” Lindsay Arnold from “Dancing with the Stars” and *NSYNC’s Joey Fatone. The highlight of the evening will be a fashion show featuring more than 150 children who are currently battling or have overcome pediatric cancer. They will be escorted down the runway by local and national celebrities. Last month, local philanthropist and hotelier Harris Rosen announced a partnership between Runway to Hope’s pediatric cancer event and The Adam Michael Rosen Foundation. The foundation was created to honor the life and legacy of his son, Adam Michael Rosen, who passed away at age 26 from brain cancer in November 2018. “The hope and strength Adam displayed during his battle with can-
