The Lowdown on Ductless Mini-Split Heat Pumps Mini splits are currently the hottest trend in appliances that warm and cool your home. They offer an electric, ductless, energy-efficient means of controlling the temperature in your living space. Mini-splits have two main physical components—an outdoor compressor/condenser and a small air-handling unit that is mounted to a discreet wall, drop-ceiling or ceiling inside your home (floor-standing models are also available if you prefer). The two units are connected to each other by small tubing which pumps refrigerant directly to the wall-mounted blowers. The tubing is hidden in your walls and generally only requires a 3-inch hole through a wall or ceiling (this means less air leakage and is also a great safety precaution—it’s pretty tricky for someone to get into your home through a 3-inch hole!). Most systems can have as much as 50 feet between the indoor and outdoor components, giving you the choice of hiding the larger outdoor system at the back or side of your home. My favourite part of this unit is that it covers both your heating and air conditioning requirements, by pulling in warm or cool air, making it cooler or hotter as required, then distributing it throughout your home. The ductless nature of mini-split systems make them much easier to install or retrofit into a home (they’re even great for additions where extending existing ductwork is not feasible). The small size
of the indoor unit allows it to be easily placed in any room, and they’re an excellent system for targeting warm and cool air to particular spaces. Systems are designed to have zones within your home, with each zone having its own thermostat, letting you control the temperature in spaces as required. By being able to adjust the temperature in occupied spaces, you’ll save money and electricity—talk about a win! Each zone requires its own individual air-handling unit, but they all connect to the same outdoor unit via hidden conduits, eliminating large ductwork, which can make your ceilings feel lower and your spaces, cluttered. Even better? A zone does not have to be determined by a room. Your installer will be able to assess where the indoor unit should be placed for maximum coverage. Apart from the space-saving and visual benefits of eliminating ductwork, this also plays a major role in energy consumption. When it comes to space conditioning, leakage and air loss in ductwork can account for upwards of 35% of your energy consumption, a number that increases if your ducts are hidden in an unconditioned space, such as an attic. That leakage is a substantial waste of energy, which is bad news for the environment and your wallet. You’ll also be impressed with how quiet the mini split system is. Because the motor and compressor are in the outside unit, the indoor components are discrete to both the eyes and ears. They are also very user-friendly. Most of them come with a remote control for temperature control and turning the system on and off. Another bonus - the versatility of the indoor air blowers means they will not interfere with the design of your indoor space.
When choosing your mini-split system, opt for an Energy Star rated unit. This means it’s a more environmentally friendly system (which will also be more economical on your energy bill) and, even better, both federal and provincial governments offer rebates and financial incentives for this type of unit to qualified purchasers. Though usually more expensive to purchase and have installed up-front; in the long run, mini-split systems are substantially less money to run and maintain than other commonly used heating and cooling systems.
There are some things you should be aware of when going forward with your mini-split system. The importance of having the system installed by a professional who is familiar with mini splits cannot be overstated. The installer needs to be knowledgeable when it comes to determining the right size of system, the best location for your indoor components to ensure maximum zoning, proper installation, and the right place for your outdoor unit. Want to know more about insulated concrete forms? Insulated concrete form (ICF) is a system of formwork for reinforced concrete usually made with a rigid thermal insulation that stays in place as a permanent interior and exterior substrate for walls, floors, and roofs. The forms are interlocking modular units that are dry-stacked (without mortar) and filled with concrete. The units lock together somewhat like Lego bricks and create a form for the structural walls or floors of a building. ICF construction has become commonplace for high performance residential construction as more stringent energy efficiency and natural disaster resistant building codes are adopted. The ICF construction technique was first developed in Europe following World War II as an inexpensive and durable way to rebuild damaged structures.
