2016 Colour(s) of the Year In a surprising move, Pantone® has named not just one, but two Colours of the Year for 2016. Rose Quartz and Serenity play off the age-old gender equality discussion with a soft warm rose and a cooler lilac-tinged blue. Within a day of release critics are asking, “Following on the heels of the 2015 Marsala disaster, has Pantone® made another mistake in 2016?”

In 2015, Pantone® named “Marsala”, a rich, reddy-brown tone, as the Colour of the Year, and within hours a nearly universal outcry from interior designers, architects, fashion houses, jewelers, and yes, home improvers too, raised the roof in common dismay. Comments included the difficulty of working with this unique, and some said passé, shade; the impossibility of working it into existing colour schemes; and on and on. In short, Marsala did not catch on. Perhaps in a move to bolster its reputation Pantone® has announced not just one, but two Colours of the Year for 2016. They are Rose Quartz and Serenity - a warm, very soft and subtle pinkish/rose shade and a cooler lilac-based blue. And already, verbal swords are raised again. The gender equality lobby is outraged by the play on traditional “pink is for girls, blue is for boys” inference. Interior designers are asking, “Are you kidding? How do we work with these colours and retain any kind of credibility?” Says Leatrice Eiseman, Pantone Colour Institute® Executive Director, “Joined together Rose Quartz and Serenity demonstrate an inherent balance Pg. 4, Interiors Winter 2016

between a warmer embracing rose tone and the cooler tranquil blue, reflecting connection and wellness as well as a soothing sense of order and peace.” Critics disagree. But it is too early yet to say how these two colours will make their presence felt in spring and summer fashions, home furnishings and décor, paint palettes and more. Continues Eiseman, “In many parts of the world we are experiencing a gender blur as it relates to fashion, which has in turn impacted colour trends throughout all other areas of design. This more unilateral approach to colour is coinciding with societal movements toward gender equality and fluidity, the consumer’s increased comfort with using colour as a form of expression, a generation that has less concern about being typecast or judged and an open exchange of digital information that has opened our eyes to different approaches to colour usage.” For those not familiar, the Pantone® Colour of the Year is a symbolic colour selection; a colour snapshot of what we see taking place in our culture that serves as an expression of a (Cont’d. Barn Doors - Not Just for the Barn! Noted home improvement and renovation expert, Bob Vila, is of the opinion that barn doors provide an ultra-stylish solution not only for tight(ish) spaces, but also for every room from trendy bathrooms to hidden home offices. We fully agree! In the past, ban doors were used almost exclusively in small spaces that could not comfortably accommodate a swinging door - but that is no longer the case. “Barn doors are definitely trending right now, and there are so many ways to introduce them into a space. The finish of the doors can easily take them from the farm to an urban loft (or any other style of home) - and the actual doors are just half the allure,” says Popsugar.

4. White, Gray & Neutral Colours In keeping with the trend towards clean lines in kitchen cabinetry, white kitchens are still very popular. However, shades of gray and other neutral colours are creeping into the popular palette for cabinet colours. Refined neutrals, along with earthy tones that work well with a variety of design elements are being seen more and more frequently. The versatility of these neutrals allow homeowners more design freedom to use a bolder palette for accents or in other areas of the home, while adding a sense of warmth and welcome to kitchen spaces. If you like everything about your kitchen cabinets except the colour, consider painting them. 7. High-Tech Cabinet Options Kitchen designers have taken our need for connectivity to heart, allowing homeowners to add a tech perspective to their cabinets such as builtin charging stations, hands-free functionality and tablet holders.

Conclusion: Trends are trends because more and more people agree it is the right way to go. The most important thing; however, is that you feel comfortable in your kitchen.

LVT Flooring - What is it? And why it’s great for kitchens. LVT - Luxury Vinyl Tile; and LVP - Luxury Vinyl Plank. If you follow flooring trends, these are the two flooring styles currently making a big splash in the world of interior design. The reasons why are simple. Incredibly realistic good looks, simple installation and easy care and maintenance - all at a realistic price point.

Homeowners who have not yet seen LVT and LVP flooring should do themselves a favor and go have a look. We’re betting they’ll be impressed with everything about these floors. Luxury vinyl tile and plank floors are made up of three layers – the top urethane layer, designed for hard wear and durability, the middle layer featuring incredibly realistic wood, stone and ceramic designs and the bottom waterproof substrate layer. The plank flooring comes in various widths ranging from about 4-1/2 inches up to 6-1/2 inches and lengths of 36 or 48 inches, while the tile flooring comes in an enormous array of sizes depending upon the type of stone or ceramic design you’ve selected. Options like textured embossing and beveled edges and ends further enhance the realism of the plank flooring look. Installing these floors is truly simple. The tools needed are a utility knife, a tapping mallet and a straight edge. That’s it. DIYers with no experience can install these floors in an afternoon. They go right over just about any surface: concrete, wood, existing vinyl or tile – it doesn’t matter, because the planks stick to each other and float over the top of the existing floor. need to reposition planks to make minor adjustments during the installation process. Another enormous advantage of these floors is that they are waterproof, and can be installed anywhere in your home where moisture can be a problem: kitchens, bathrooms, basements and laundry rooms. They’re also exceptionally durable, resisting scratches and wear. Spills clean up quickly without concern over warping, stains or water damage over time. And cleaning is a breeze. Big Impressions on a

Small Budget

1. Update lampshades with new ones in more contemporary shapes or simply fresh white shades. 2. Paint is the classic makeover potion. Instead of repainting a whole room, just paint one wall in a focal colour or paint a contrasting rectangle over a sofa to use as a “gallery” space. You can also paint the insides of bookshelves in an unexpected colour or paint your ceiling a lighter version of the wall colour. 3. Update your window dressings. Home stores have reams of ready-made draperies you can hem to the right size (or leave to puddle on the floor), or you can make your own from sheets or lengths of designer outlet fabric.
