Realtors view bathrooms as one of the most important rooms to upgrade, in order to maximize the value of your home. Over the past few years, bathroom design trends have been getting greener and greener. Focus on the organic is revealed through the fixed background like flooring or cabinetry, and the blend of the new with the organic is of great appeal to most consumers. The appeal of low-water usage products, and products that have been or can be reclaimed or repurposed. Anything ecofriendly is on trend. With that said, though people want to be environmentally conscious, they don’t want to sacrifice style or functionality. Says Judd Lord, director of industrial design for Delta Faucets, “More than ever, consumers want to make

smarter water choices in order to maintain high environmental standards and save money. However, they are looking to do this without compromising their experience in the bath space.” “To address this need, Delta developed H2O Kinetic technology, which when incorporated into our popular shower lines, provides a consumer-proven feeling of using more water, while actually using up the 40% less than their standard showerhead counterparts.” Continued Lord, “We’re seeing clean, minimalist design dressed in warmer, traditional finishes such as shades of bronze. TILE TRENDS

Copper, stainless, hardwood and glass represent some of the hottest tile trends currently popping up in bathroom renovations. Many designer are working with glass, used for backsplashes, shower walls, and as accents on floors. Glass is an organic, recycled and recyclable material - helping consumers feel good about their choices. The broad colour palette and finishes ranging from glossy to flat makes it relatively easy to find the perfect glass tile to complement any bathroom. Glass adds depth, sparkle and luminescence not found in ceramic or natural stone. When used sparingly, vivid glass tiles can provide exciting visual highlights. Alternatively, covering an entire bathroom wall with cool, serene shades of glass can create a luxurious, spa-like atmosphere.

CHOOSING DOOR HARDWARE Consider the door's operation. Swinging doors will almost always be hung on butt hinges, though doors that are taller or heavier than average may work better on pivots. Sliding doors are hung on tracks, while pocket doors are installed using a pocket door kit. All of these can be found in a variety of finishes to match the look of your home.

When choosing interior door hardware, it's important to balance function with the aesthetic appeal of these devices. Choose a finish. Interior door hardware often comes with a standard brass or chrome finish, although more exciting options are also generally available. Once you've chosen a colour, decide whether you want a polished or brushed finish. Keep in mind that polished finishes tend to scratch and show fingerprints more easily than brushed finishes. Consider using simple door pulls in place of knobs or locks. A door pull is a handle used to open a door. L.E.D. LEDs (or Light-Emitting Diodes) are semiconductor devices that produce visible light when an electrical current is passed through them. LEDs are a type of Solid State Lighting (SSL), as are Organic Light-Emitting Diodes (OLEDs) and Light-Emitting Polymers (LEPs). LED lighting differs from incandescent and compact fluorescent lighting in several ways. When designed well, LED lighting can be more efficient, durable, versatile and longer lasting. LED lighting products use light emitting diodes to produce light very efficiently. An electrical current passed through semi-conductor material illuminates the tiny light sources we call LEDs. The heat produced is absorbed into a heat sink. Common LED colours include amber, red, green and blue. There is actually no such thing as a "white" LED. To get white light, the kind we use for lighting our homes and offices, different colour LEDs are mixed or covered with a phosphor material that converts the colour of the light. The phosphor is the yellow material you can see on some LED products. Coloured LEDs are widely used as signal lights and indicator lights (such as the power button on a computer).

LEDs are now being incorporated into bulbs and fixtures for general lighting applications. LEDs are small and provide unique design opportunities. Some Led bulb solutions my look like familiar light bulbs and some may not but can better match the performance of traditional light bulbs. Some LED light fixtures may have LEDs built-in as a permanent light source. LEDs are "directional" light sources which means they emit light in a specific direction, and it is for this reason that LED lighting is able to use light and energy more efficiently in many applications. Instead, they experience lumen depreciation, where the amount of light produced decreases and light colour appearance can shift over time. Taming Closet Clutter Messy closets are a source of frustration and stress, and they don't contribute to anyone's happiness. Conversely, an organized closet can bring peace of mind, and a sense of relief in knowing that when you need something (and you definitely will!), it'll be easy to find. "A place for everything, and everything in its place." An old proverb which perfectly sums up what we all wish for in our closets. Achieving this takes quite a bit more than wishful thinking, but it doesn't have to cost an arm and a leg. With a little help from the organization experts, here are six steps towards turning your closet from a cluttered mess to an organized space.

STEP ONE

Inventory your closet. This is one of the most time-consuming steps, but it's well worth it. Unload the entire contents of your closet to gain a true understanding of what's in it. You'll probably be surprised at how much you want to donate or toss. Once you've pared down the contents to those you want to keep, group like items together and place them in rough piles on the bed or floor.

STEP TWO

Now that you know what you're keeping, you can adjust any closet shelves as required to fit your things. While you're adjusting, take a look at unused closet wall space, and space

on the back of doors. Adding some hooks, or rails, can greatly increase storage in your room. Baskets are another good way to organize like items in your closet - they're practical, and inexpensive to purchase.

STEP THREE

Add lighting. Lighting is essential if you want to be able to find things in your closet. Most newer homes have closet lighting, most older homes don't. This can be expensive if you bring in an electrician to wire everything - but there are also good, affordable solutions available like battery powered LED puck lights .

Group like items together in the way that works best for you (by colour, by use, by style, etc.).

STEP FIVE

Invest in good-quality hangers. Hanger uniformity makes it easier to find clothing, because everything is at the same level. Quality hangers can be wood, metal or plastic; but whatever you choose, make sure they're durable to withstand the weight of clothes.

STEP SIX

Invest in a good footstool or step-stool so you can reach your closet's top shelves easily and safely. This will allow you to use all the available space in your closet. â&#x153;ż

chop, store and haul! EPA stoves also produce less smoke, and emit only 2 to 7.5 grams of air-borne particles per hour - as compared to the 40 to 85 grams produced by older wood stoves. They also produce less creosote, a by-product of burning wood that can build up in your chimney and cause a fire. Firewood or pellets? Pellets come in easy-to-store bags, and because they are very clean burning, don't require a conventional chimney which allows pellet stoves to be installed in homes that may not be suitable for a wood stove. Pellet stoves do require more maintenance than wood stoves, and they also need electricity to operate, something to keep in mind if you want a stove to provide backup heat during power outages. Choose the right size stove for the space you need to heat. Undersized stoves can't produce enough heat to keep your space comfortable, but oversize stoves can overheat your living space and can also create hazards in your home caused by turning down the stove's airflow causing slower burning which increases creosote buildup in your chimney. The best way to calculate the stove size you need is to take the full square footage of the level the stove is installed on, and add half the square footage of any levels ABOVE the stove. Do not count any levels below the stove. Since you don't want to run your stove at full blast, add another 25% to the total square footage to be heated. Then select a stove that can heat that square footage at its maximum heating capacity. Simple Tips for Stacking & Storing Firewood Freshly chopped firewood has up to 50% water content and won't burn in your fireplace. First, you must let the firewood season (dry), which allows the moisture to escapeâ&#x20AC;&#x201C;â&#x20AC;&#x201C;the drier the wood, the cleaner the burn. When the wood gets down below 20% water content, it's ready to burn. Burning unseasoned (green) or even partially seasoned wood in your stove or fireplace will cause creosote build-up in your chimney, which can lead to a chimney fire at the worst, and a lack of fire or a roomful of smoke at best. Every homeowner reliant on wood should know how to season wood.

Gather and stack wood at the right time of year.

With the exception of wanting to gather deciduous trees when their sap is lowest during winter, gathering and seasoning wood during the summer season makes good sense because you can take advantage of the warm weather to start drying out the wood. In areas with little rainfall during summer, open air storage is also a viable option; any rain that does fall will usually replace sap and as the water evaporates faster in the heat, the fuel will dry faster.

Before drying, know the properties of your wood.

The duration of seasoning depends on the wood and for deciduous trees, when the tree was felled. The sap of deciduous trees moves to the roots in the winter, so such trees felled in winter have a much lower moisture content to begin with, and so will be seasoned more quickly. In general, pine and other softwoods require around 6 to 12 months to season, while hardwoods such as oak require a year to 2 years. However, this rule of thumb has exceptions, so knowing the tree type and its water content is important. There isn't any point seasoning wood longer than it needs to be. Over-dried wood will have less energy as volatile esters in the wood evaporate. These waxy substances contain a great deal of heat energy, so it is a mistake to think that longer is necessarily better.

Chop the wood in readiness for storage.

It's best to get the pieces down to no more than 6-8 inches in diameter. Eighteen inches long is a common size, though 16 inches is the correct length for a face cord and will fit better in smaller stoves.

Stack wood so it isn't sitting directly on the ground or right up against a wall.

If you don't have a woodshed, cut two saplings to use as a base to keep the firewood from contact with the ground. Pallets are also a great alternative.

Allow space between the stack and a wall to allow air to move.

Air circulation is an essential part of the seasoning process, to ensure that the wood dries. Ideally, you would have a moisture barrier such as a tarp below the wood, and/or have it spaced up off the ground to allow air flow.

Ensure that the top of the wood is covered.

Covering the top of the wood allows rain and snow to run off without soaking the wood. However, the ends of the stack should be kept uncovered to allow air to (cont'd. pg. 78) circulate and moisture to escape.

Bark acts like a lid on firewood, offering natural protection. On split wood, stack the wood with the bark at the bottom to allow the wood to dry faster. If you are storing the wood without cover, stacking with the bark on top wil prevent some of the rain from soaking into the wood. There are two theories on the covering of wood during the seasoning process - the first is to cover the wood to prevent the rain and snow from entering the center of the stack and gathering there. The second is that you do not have to cover your wood at all, ever. Just leave it out there in the weather and it will season just as well as if you covered it.

Check for wood dryness.

Here are three simple ways to test wood dryness. 1. Pick two pieces of wood that you think is dry. Knock the two pieces together. If you here more of a "ring" than a "thud", the wood is probably dry. 2. Check for radial cracks at the ends of the wood, which indicate dryness. 3. Burn a piece on a roaring fire. FIRE SAFETY PLAN? The best way to avoid injury from a fire is to know what to do if one happens! Staying calm and following the family Fire Safety Plan is the best way to prevent injury. Stress to children that panicking or trying to hide from the fire is not the right way to escape safely. Creating your family’s Fire Safety Plan should be a family affair, with everyone pitching in, contributing ideas and asking questions. In this way, children especially feel a sense of control. Your family’s Fire Safety Plan should include a full understanding of the fire safety equipment in your home, including smoke and CO alarms, your fire escape route including two ways out of every room if possible, meeting place, and the local emergency and Fire Department contact information.
