FRONTIER CITY & THE FRONTIER COUNTRY CALENDAR OF EVENTS

Who are we, you ask? The 12 central counties of Oklahoma are known as Frontier Country. In 1968, the-Lt. Governor of Oklahoma George Nigh realized the potential economic impact that tourism could bring to Oklahoma so he carved Oklahoma into six different regions/countries based on the heritage and environmental elements of the area. The other five are Green Country (northeastern Oklahoma), Red Carpet Country (northwestern Oklahoma), Great Plains Country (southwestern Oklahoma), Choctaw Country (southeastern Oklahoma) and Chickasaw Country (south central Oklahoma). Frontier Country got its name from the pioneering spirit of its settlers and the enduring resilience of its natives. Central Oklahoma Frontier Country is located at the crossroads of I-35, I-40, I-44 and historic Route 66, which makes it easily accessible from anywhere in the nation. Get ready for excitement and adventure while you tour the Fontier.

Join Frontier Country as we celebrate the 150th Anniversary of the Chisholm Trail this year! Communities and attractions have come together and created a list of activities to take in! The Chisholm Trail ran directly through the western side of Frontier Country, including the towns of El Reno, Yukon and Chickasha. Historical markers can be found throughout the area commemorating the historic cattle trail. Cattle were first driven approximately 800 miles from San Antonio, Texas to Abilene, Kansas in 1867. Established in 1865 by Jesse Chisholm, a half-Cherokee Indian, between 8 to 12 million cattle were moved over the trail during a twenty-year period. Once cattle arrived in Kansas, they boarded trains headed for the beefstarved northwest where they sold for up to thirteen times as much per head. Cowboy tales continue to be told today that happened along the Chisholm Trail. Touch, smell and feel the scarred land traveled by millions of cattle in the largest man-made migration in history!

See the Chisholm Trail Scheduled Activities, Exhibits and Historical Marker locations on pages 14, 15, 23 & 34.

Chisholm Trail | Near El Reno, OK A pioneer merchant, trader, and explorer, Jesse Chisholm, a mixed-blood Cherokee, established a trail through western Indian Territory before the Civil War. Texas cattlemen used the trail until the late 1880s to move millions of cattle to northern markets. The trail ran from Montague County, Texas, to Abilene, Kansas. Source - www.blogOklahoma.us Cowboy Camp Springs | Yukon, OK This pond is the site of an important watering hole used by drovers as they passed through this area on the way to the railheads in Kansas. Created by the confluence of two natural springs, it has been used for hundreds of years by Indians, buffalo, and other wildlife. The pure, clean water made a perfect location for cowboy campsites. The cattle themselves were watered nearby on the North Canadian River just to the north. The present pond was built in the 1930’s T WO GRE AT MUSE UMS by the Work Program Administration and the Civilian Conservation Corps.
