The URBAN

The twelve central counties of Oklahoma feature beautiful rolling pastures filled with horses and cattle; while off in a distant sunset you can make out the skyscrapers of downtown Oklahoma City. The “Palace on the Prairie” (Gaylord Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium) can be seen for miles as it stands tall on the campus of the University of Oklahoma in Norman. Our fields of golden wheat waves to our visitors as they drive across our interstates in late spring! Nostalgic Route 66 beckons to us to cruise its longest stretch which runs through Oklahoma. The frontier spirit is alive and well as we broaden our horizon’s and welcome a more “urban” frontier. Arcadia’s small town “claim to fame” is Pop’s which features over 700 types of soda pop and an oldfashioned diner! Located on Route 66, look for the iconic giant bottle of soda pop and you will know you’ve arrived. Chandler sits at the half way point between Tulsa and Oklahoma City on Route 66. See and experience Route 66 in a unique way when you take a virtual car ride down the Mother Road at the Route 66 Interpretive Center. The Chief Drive-In in Chickasha was built in 1949 and is one of the last standing Drive-Ins in Oklahoma. Open year-round on weekends only, they show double features on their single screen. Be sure and visit their website at chiefdriveintheatre.com before heading out the door. Edmond is big enough to offer fine dining and upscale lodging yet quaint enough to provide wineries, spas, top golf courses and more! Shop historic downtown and view its’ beautiful statue collection sprinkled throughout this city. Ride an authentic rail trolley in historic downtown El Reno. Grab an onion burger at one of the diners around town and make sure to visit in May when this community comes together to cook the world’s largest. Check out the bed & breakfast capital of Oklahoma as well as our territorial capital, Guthrie! Home of the largest Historic Preservation District in the nation, catch the trolley tour around town or visit its many one of a kind shops and museums.

Midwest City is located just minutes from downtown OKC and is the proud neighbor to Tinker Air Force Base. Both entities celebrated their 75th anniversary this past year. Midwest City is known for festivals as they feature several each year. Be sure to check out the Made in Oklahoma Festival in June.

FRONTIER The state’s third-largest city, Norman is home to the University of Oklahoma. This high-energy college town offers urban eateries, world-class museums, casinos and a bustling night-life. It is also home to the National Weather Center, which offers tours and a weather festival in the fall. On the second Friday of each month, downtown Norman hosts Friday Night Art Walks. The state capitol sits in Oklahoma City where it has real, working oil pumpers on its lawn. Our travel guide cover photo features the Wheeler Ferris Wheel located in Wheeler District. The district is home to the historic Santa Monica Pier Ferris Wheel which now overlooks the skyline of Oklahoma City. Standing 100 feet tall on the south bank of the Oklahoma River, the Ferris Wheel was refurbished and installed in April 2016. For hours of operation visit wheelerdistrict.com/ferris-wheel/. Seminole is named for one of the Five Civilized Tribes that settled in the area and has a deep, rich history in the oil industry. It’s home to an Oklahoma treasure, the Grisso Mansion which is on the National Register of Historic Places. The “dream home” built by W.E. Grisso for his wife Maggie. Construction began in 1926 and concluded in 1928. Built for $750,000, the 26-room mansion has many rare features that includes a cascading stairway, a ballroom, eight fire places, a conservatory and vineyard. With Italian Renaissance charm, the Grisso Mansion also features gorgeous fountains, koi pond and a native stone reflecting pool. Located less than one hour east of Oklahoma City. America’s Friendliest College Town can be found in Stillwater, one hour north of Oklahoma City. Known for its hospitality, this community’s roots run deep! Home to Red Dirt music, Oklahoma State University and historic downtown, come together to make you feel right at home! Eskimo Joe’s is known nation wide for their t-shirts and cheese fries, both are fan favorites and can be found just off OSU’s campus. West of Oklahoma City is Yukon, the hometown of country music legend Garth Brooks! Each October, the city hosts one of our state’s largest ethnic festivals, the Oklahoma Czech Festival. It’s iconic “Yukon Flour Mill” can be seen for miles. The Chisholm Trail and Route 66 both come through this farm community that sprang to life in 1891.

At the eastern edge of Frontier Country are the towns of Shawnee, Seminole and Okemah to name a few. Just 45 minutes straight east of Oklahoma City, Shawnee offers casinos, unique shopping and dining options. Every July, Shawnee plays host to the annual International Finals Youth Rodeo. The Grand Resort and Casino features over 1,800 Vegas-style games, luxurious hotel accommodations, spa, big-name entertainers and fabulous restaurant choices. Jasmine Moran Children’s Museum in Seminole is a place of wonder and interactive play. This museum allows a child’s imagination to run wild in its indoor and outdoor play areas. They won’t want to leave! Okemah in far eastern Frontier Country and along I-40 plays host to the well-known Woody Guthrie Festival each summer. Visitors from around the world converge in Guthrie’s hometown.
