A NOTE TO
PARENTS The Builders Association of Pennsylvania’s Professional Women in Building Council (PWB) is the voice of women (and men), who are actively involved in all aspects of the building industry – as builders, developers, remodelers, trade contractors, suppliers, educators, marketing experts, realtors, mortgage lenders, architects, interior designers, and more. Did you know that for every four people who leave the building trades, either by retirement or otherwise, only one new person enters the trades? Did you know that our building industry's hiring needs cannot be met by the number of new workers that come into the trades yearly? We have a tremendous shortage of skilled workers. One of the PWB's primary focuses is to encourage career development and education within the trades. When you ask young children what they want to be when they grow up, the scope of answers is enormous! They pick from the careers they’ve seen and thought were exciting and important: teacher, builder, doctor, excavator, firefighter, astronaut…the list is as endless as their potential! As children get older, though, they somehow lose sight of many of these important and rewarding careers. The goal of this book is to highlight the many important and rewarding careers available in the construction industry. The average house takes over 20 different subcontractors to complete, each with a different responsibility. While literally keeping roofs over people’s heads as builders, electricians, excavators, plumbers, carpenters, roofers, and more, these professions are ALL rewarding careers with bright futures.
