The Latino Connection - In Onorato Campaign: Angel Figueroa “Connected to the Neighborhoods” J. Smith/El Hispano Philadelphia – “I just believe in the man,” Angel Figueroa said, explaining why he had taken on the position as the chief of Latino Outreach for the Gubernatorial Campaign of Democrat Dan Onorato. The former City Councilman from Reading, Pa., and Vice President of the ILEAD Resource Development organization elaborated in a recent interview with El Hispano, that “I believe we have an opportunity to end this legend and myth, that every two terms in Pennsylvania we have a change” (from Democrat to Republican or the reverse). “I’m proud to say that this year we’re going to have another Democrat in office to finish the work we need to, and to continue the vision that Dan Onorato has to offer. I believe in that.” “A part of my job is to develop an outlet for news and information from Dan Onorato’s (campaign) and to start a conversation around the issues” and raise questions about “what I call Latino apathy.” Since being introduced to Mr. Onorato at a Congreso de Latinos Gala last year, Mr. Figueroa said that he had studied “intensely” Onorato’s record of achievements as an Allegheny Executive and City Councilman. “He is a City Councilman, like myself. And as a Councilman you’re much more connected to the neighborhood people,” explained Mr. Figueroa. “ It’s those neighborhood people who remind you every day why you were elected. When Dan Onorato becomes our next Governor he won’t forget where he came from. I find that extremely exciting and moving.” Noting that during his tenure as County Executive, the Pittsburgh region has had a lower unemployment rate than the “rest of the state and the nation,” and that he has “attracted many Fortune 500 companies to Allegheny county,” Mr. Figueroa asserted that “his qualifications speak for themselves.” While refraining from offering any statements regarding the Democratic candidate’s views on some of the more contentious social issues likely to confront the next Governor, Mr. Figueroa said simply that “Dan Onorato is a family man and recognized that family comes first. We share a lot of the same values.” However, on the issue of Immigration, Mr. Figueroa observed that their Republican opponent, “Tom Corbett has made it very clear, that if he becomes Governor he will sign an Arizona-type law.” “That’s the role of the federal government,” he added, referring to the immigration legislation. “The Governor’s role, as the executive of the state, is to take care of the state issues that we have to deal with: such as taxes, schools, and economic development.” The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania is not a border state, so obviously the fact that Tom Corbett is suggesting this (Arizona-type) bill is to speak to his constituency. It’s all rhetoric, because it’s not a concern of the Commonwealth.” Launching his effort to court Latino leaders around the state - from Councilman Julio Guiridy in Allentown and Negron in Bethlehem to former Councilman Angel Ortiz in Philadelphia- Mr. Figueroa was enthused by the early reaction, “they are very excited to be part of this.” Additional evidence for Mr. Onorato’s successful stewardship of the economy of Allegheny County, both as City Controller and Executive, was provided by a 2008 Time Magazine article which lauded the area as the “one economic bright spot.” While acknowledging that Mr. Onorato will bring his “own style” of leadership to the office of Governor, Mr. Figueroa predicted that he would build upon the work of Governor Rendell by creating an “environment” that allows for the transformation of a “declining manufacturing” sector, into one creating jobs in renewable energy, technology and health care. As a Chief Executive in Allegheny County, his campaign literature referred to his efforts to “redevelop old industrial sites in an environmentally friendly way, promoting green building practices and establishing a Green-Action Team.” Having admired some of the educational ideas offered by Democrat State Senator Anthony Williams during the primary, Mr. Onorato recently announced his support for school choice and allowing parents options in regard to where their educational funds are being spent; which could be a boon to charter, private schools such as Aspira’s DeHostos and Pantoja Charters and the Pan-American Academy.

Luv Coach Q&A: Wasting Time!
I am a 39 year old woman who has never been married. I have been in a relationship with a man for the last three years. He had baggage from a previous marriage. Since the woman cheated and used him, he said that he could never love again. He is in this relationship but does not seem committed. I am starved for his attention and affection. I tell him I love him to get nothing in return. I have truly been hurt in the past. Should I move on and pray that one day someone will love me?
Pamela When someone tells you that they can never love again, it's not a challenge for you to see if you can make them love you, it's a disclaimer that they are damaged goods and are unwilling to do the work to heal themselves. It's like banging your head against a wall and wondering why it hurts. He isn't committed because he told you he doesn't want to commit. He couldn't be more clear about his intentions. My question to you is, why haven't you received the message? If you go to the shoe store to buy toilet paper and the salesperson tells you they don't sell toilet paper, are just going to hang around in the hopes that one day they might decide to stock it? You are wasting your time and putting yourself through unnecessary emotional strife. It seems that your fear of ever finding love, is keeping you imprisoned in a loveless relationship. Until you recognize that embracing the harsh reality over the unknown is an unhealthy way to live, you will be stuck in a rut. Take a risk, love yourself, and move on. There are billions of people in the world who are searching for a love just like you, and they will appreciate and reciprocate your giving heart.
I have been in touch with an old friend from college who was recently divorced. I always liked him in school, but we never got a chance to date. Now he is pursuing me and I think if we get together we would have a cute story to tell, but I'm not sure if we are on the same page. I want a serious relationship, and when I mention it, he just nods his head and smiles. He has never told me what his intentions are or what he wants at this point. Am I wasting my time with him?
Hanna Everyone moves at their own pace, but knowing someone's intentions allows you both to decide if you're looking for the same things. If he is recently divorced, then he may need to take some time to work through his emotions before he will be ready to commit again. His reaction to your desire for a serious relationship sends the message that he hears you, but he hasn't decided what he wants at this point. If you like him and you want to see where it might go, then continue dating and getting to know him, but do not have sex. Sexual interaction will only complicate your feelings at this point, and you want to make sure that he wants what you want before you take the step to be sexually intimate. This approach gives you the chance to see if you have a real heart and head connection and if you are really compatible with him. You want to make sure that you like him for who he is today, and not for who you knew him to be in college, so let go of the desire to have a cute story and focus on getting to know him again. I want to have all the fun my friends have, but she is standing in the way. Please help me find a solution to this problem. Thankfully, Going Down The Aisle Eddie, wanted desperately to have sex with this really cute, really hot girl in his office...but she was dating someone and wouldn't give him the time of day. Finally Eddie got so frustrated that he went to her and said, "I know you're not interested in a relationship with me, but I'll give you $100 if you just let me have sex with you." The girl responded with an immediate and offended, "NO!" Eddie said, "I'll be real fast. I'll throw the money on the floor, you bend down and I'll finish by the time you've picked it up. I promise!" She thought for a moment and said that she would consult with her boyfriend. So she called him and explained the situation. Her boyfriend said, "He must be crazy! Ask him for $200, and pick up the money really fast. He won't even be able to get his pants down and we'll be 200 bucks richer." She agreed and accepts the proposal. 20 minutes goes by and the boyfriend is still waiting for his girlfriend's call. Finally, after a half hour the boyfriend calls and asks, "Well...what happened???" Still breathing hard, she managed to reply, "The bastard had all quarters!"
As a painless way to save money, a young couple arranged that every time they have sex the husband puts his pocket change into a china piggy bank on the bedside table. One night while being unusually athletic, he accidentally knocked the piggy bank onto the floor where it smashes.
Unemployment rate drops in Reading,Rises in Berks County The unemployment rate rose in Berks County from June to July but dropped in Reading, according to state statistics. The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for Berks rose from 9.6 percent in June to 9.8 percent in July. The non-adjusted rate for the city decreased from 14.6 percent in June to 14.2 in July. That drop might merely reflect that people have stopped looking for work, said Edward J. McCann Jr., chief operating officer of the Berks County Workforce Investment Board. The number of employed Reading workers dropped from 29,300 in June to 29,100 in July. In any case, McCann said, the numbers for Berks over the past few months show no particular trend. Unemployment is high and shows no sign of getting better or worse, he said. The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for Pennsylvania increased from 9.2 percent in June to 9.3 percent in July. The U.S. rate was unchanged at 9.5 percent. The state estimates that 19,900 people were unemployed in Berks in July, compared to 19,500 in June. Over the year, Berks County's unemployment rose by 0.8 percentage point. The seasonally adjusted number of nonfarm jobs in Berks rose by 100 from June to July. This was the fifth over-the-month increase in the last six months. Over the year, total nonfarm jobs in Berks dropped 0.6 percent. The state showed a 0.3 percent increase. Manufacturing jobs in Berks dropped by 1,000 since July 2009 and showed their first over-the-month decrease since February. Trade, transportation and utilities jobs were down by 300, mostly because school bus drivers stopped working for the summer. Government jobs fell by 2,200, mainly because of the start of summer vacation at public schools. Federal government jobs decreased by 100 as the 2010 Census continued to wind down. FROM BCTV.ORD

Jillian’s BLOCK! The 411YOU want Fat Joe Interview: Selling over 2.5 million albums, New York’s own Joseph Cartagena aka Fat Joe continues to prove he is unstoppable. With his new album ‘The Dark Side’ Vol. 1, features artists such as Lil’ Wayne, Trey Songz, Young Jeezy, and R. Kelly. Many are sure that Mister Don Cartagena will take Hip Hop to a different level. Performing for the audience at the Silo Nightclub on Saturday, August 21, 2010, Reading embraced the blast of the New York Vibe Joe and his crew brought to the stage. After showing Reading what New York is made of, I met with Fat Joe to talk about education, youth, hip hop, and the late Christopher Lee Rios aka Big Pun. JILLIAN : How was it coming out to Reading? FAT JOE : I love Reading man, they always got love. They always support Fat Joe, Terror Squad. You know, I got love for Reading. I’m sure they could have promoted the show a little better, but we had fun. JILLIAN : Being in the game for sixteen years, do you feel that music needs something, Hip Hop today needs something or is missing something? FAT JOE : Well, I don’t know if its missing something, its just um, its too big of a question, too broad of a question. Of course its missing stuff, you know I think the real hip hop is coming back to where good music is starting to be played a lot more. For a minute it was like really messed up, it was really like ringtone songs, and that was it. It was like you couldn’t get no albums, and the albums were really dope. Now its coming back to good music. Couple of good albums dropped, just dropped my album "The Dark Side", if you don’t got it, go get it . But you know, I think its getting to where it has to be. JILLIAN: What was your greatest life changing experience while in the music industry? FAT JOE: Life changing experience... I don’t know. I could tell you my greatest contribution to the game was bringing Big Pun into the game, that’s how I feel...You know he’s a legend. You see how people get so proud when we play his music. You know I’m happy that I was able to make the bridge. I miss him, he’s one of the greatest ever. Other than that, I’m happy I’m just able to do what I love to do, what I dreamed to do and STILL be doing it. JILLIAN: Speaking of Big Pun, when he first passed away, how did you deal with his death? FAT JOE:That’s hard because when you deal with a death of a family member its one thing you dealing with it, and you mourning it, but you know you can go to a quiet place most of the time, turn off your phone and not have to deal with it. With me, it was like everywhere I went, I was in a car and every car next to me was like "Oh, I’m sorry for your brother...". Everywhere, it was just so overwhelming. Although he was big, we never expected him to pass. It was shocking. I went into a big depression for like two years. Gained a lot of weight, just doing reckless shit. Two years later, I snapped out of it. I knew I had to step up. JILLIAN: With the artists that are coming out now, such as Nicki Minaj and Drake... do you feel that their careers will be successful? FAT JOE: I think they’re dope..Yes. Its successful right now. I think they’re really, really, really talented. I think Nicki Minaj is dope, they’re both dope. I like them. JILLIAN: One last question. I’m from a non-violence youth organization titled RIZE. We focus on media arts for the youth. As a message to them, what would you say? FAT JOE: Well the things I always tell the kids and they think I’m corny is that you can get a chain, and get it robbed. You can get a car and you can crash it, but the only thing they cant take away from you is an education. You’ve never seen anyone get a diploma and have it taken back. In this day & age, with the economy being so messed up, with there not being that many jobs, you have to go extra hard. You have to go to college. You have to compete with other people. I seen this crazy thing where only 25% of black kids in NYC graduate. That means 1 out of 4 graduate. That also means that a lot of people should be getting fired. People are still getting paid, they're still giving out the budgets. But no one is doing the right thing, trying to make it interesting enough for these kids to stay off the streets and do good in school. When you have 25% of the kids graduating, that means they’re going to be in jail, that means that they’re not going to have jobs. There aren’t any jobs to begin with, how are they going to compete? They’re either going to go to jail or hustle. That’s the only thing you DON’T need a diploma for. You’ll either end up locked up, or in jail. I mean, it’s real alarming for me to see that statistic. It’s crazy... JILLIAN: I wanted to thank you on behalf of Afro-Latino Magazine and the RIZE Program, so thank you! Afro/Latino

BREST CANCER What Is Breast Cancer?
Symptoms & Diagnosis
Breast cancer is an uncontrolled growth of breast cells. To better understand breast cancer, it helps to understand how any cancer can develop. Cancer occurs as a result of mutations, or abnormal changes, in the genes responsible for regulating the growth of cells and keeping them healthy. The genes are in each cell’s nucleus, which acts as the “control room” of each cell. Normally, the cells in our bodies replace themselves through an orderly process of cell growth: healthy new cells take over as old ones die out. But over time, mutations can “turn on” certain genes and “turn off” others in a cell. That changed cell gains the ability to keep dividing without control or order, producing more cells just like it and forming a tumor.
Breast cancer symptoms vary widely — from lumps to swelling to skin changes — and many breast cancers have no obvious symptoms at all. Symptoms that are similar to those of breast cancer may be the result of noncancerous conditions like infection or a cyst. BREAST SELF EXAM should be part of your monthly health care routine, and you should visit your doctor if you experience breast changes. If you're over 40 or at a high risk for the disease, you should also have an annual mammaogram and physical exam by a doctor. The earlier breast cancer is found and diagnosed, the better your chances of beating it.
A tumor can be benign (not dangerous to health) or malignant (has the potential to be dangerous). Benign tumors are not considered cancerous: their cells are close to normal in appearance, they grow slowly, and they do not invade nearby tissues or spread to other parts of the body. Malignant tumors are cancerous. Left unchecked, malignant cells eventually can spread beyond the original tumor to other parts of the body.
The actual process of diagnosis can take weeks and involve many different kinds of tests. Waiting for results can feel like a lifetime. The uncertainty stinks. But once you understand your own unique “big picture,” you can make better decisions. You and your doctors can formulate a treatment plan tailored just for you.
The term “breast cancer” refers to a malignant tumor that has developed from cells in the breast. Usually breast cancer either begins in the cells of the lobules, which are the milk-producing glands, or the ducts, the passages that drain milk from the lobules to the nipple. Less commonly, breast cancer can begin in the stromal tissues, which include the fatty and fibrous connective tissues of the breast. Over time, cancer cells can invade nearby healthy breast tissue and make their way into the underarm lymph nodes, small organs that filter out foreign substances in the body. If cancer cells get into the lymph nodes, they then have a pathway into other parts of the body. The breast cancer’s stage refers to how far the cancer cells have spread beyond the original tumor (see Stages of Breast Cancer table more information).
In the following pages of the Symptoms and Diagnosis section, you can learn about:UNDERSTANDING BREAST CANCER How breast cancer happens, how it progresses, the stages, and a look at risk factors screening and testing The tests used for screening, diagnosis, and monitoring, including mammograms, ultrasound, MRI, CAT scans, PET scans, and more.TYPES OF BREAST CANCER The different types of breast cancer, including ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC), invasive lobular carcinoma (ILC), inflammatory breast cancer, male breast cancer, recurrent breast cancer, metastatic breast cancer, and more. Your DIAGNOSIS The characteristics of the cancer that might affect your treatment plan, including size, stage, lymph node status, hormone receptor status, and more. YOUR PATHOLOGY REPORT A detailed, step-by-step explanation of what your pathology report says and how this might affect your treatment options.
Breast cancer is always caused by a genetic abnormality (a “mistake” in the genetic material). However, only 5-10% of cancers are due to an abnormality inherited from your mother or father. About 90% of breast cancers are due to genetic abnormalities that happen as a result of the aging process and the “wear and tear” of life in general. While there are steps every person can take to help the body stay as healthy as possible (such as eating a balanced diet, not smoking, limiting alcohol, and exercising regularly), breast cancer is never anyone's fault. Feeling guilty, or telling yourself that breast cancer happened because of something you or anyone else did, is not productive. Afro/Latino
