Latino - Hispanic Heritage Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated every year in the United States from September 15 to October 15. One's heritage is the customs and traditions that are handed down from generation to generation through their families. A person with Latino heritage means that they are descendants of a family from Mexico, the Carribean, Central America, and South America. The term Hispanic means people who come from a country where Spanish is spoken. Harder - Because of their Latin American origins, Hispanic Americans are also called Latinos. Within this soon to be largest group of minorities in the United States, there are people of many different national and ethnic origins. They are not from one nationality or one culture, but are from many different origins. Many Latino and Hispanic people in the United States would prefer that they simply be called Americans. Others identify themselves with their cultural or national background. The three largest groups of Latinos in the United States are Mexican Americans, Puerto Ricans, and Cuban Americans. Many Puerto Ricans also call themselves Boriqua. Members of subgroups sometimes use more specialized names. For example, some Mexican Americans call themselves Chicanos, and Puerto Ricans living in New York state often refer to themselves as Nuyoricans. . Many Latinos in the U.S. are descendants of Mexican people who lived in the Southwest when it was appropriated as spoils of war or purchased in a series of land sales. In many cases, their ancestors became Americans not by their own choice. Almost all other American Latinos or their ancestors migrated here from Latin America. As a group, Latinos represent a mixture of several ethnic backgrounds, including European, American Indian, and African

Luv Coach Q&A: My Wife is Cheating! I have been married for about 30 years and recently found out one of my best friends is having an affair with my wife. His wife left him a couple years ago when she became a lesbian. I felt bad for him so I kept insisting that he spend time with me and my my wife. I started hearing friends tell me that they spotted him and my wife out together, but when I confronted them, they told me that they were just enjoying each others company. Then a short time later I found out that he had given her a cell phone so they could communicate without me knowing about it. I was heart broken and recommended that we try counseling since I did not want to give up on our marriage. We went to just two sessions before my wife said she refused to stop seeing my friend and that the counseling was a waste of time. I told her then she would have to move out and she did without any reluctance. This really broke my heart. I have filed for divorce and she has told me she is very happy with her new life. I did start seeing a counselor, but there are days when I feel like ending things because I don't like living with the constant pain. The loneliness is overwhelming sometimes and I feel like I'm living in a fog. I have trouble accepting the fact that my friend betrayed me like that and my wife, without hesitation, walked a way from a 30year marriage. Also, please understand that I do not drink, I have been constantly employed for the past 36 years, and I have never laid a hand on my wife. I have been faithful and consider myself a homebody. --Chuck That is the ultimate betrayal. To be hurt by your wife and your best friend is one of the worst experiences a person can go through, and the pain you must be feeling is horrible. It is understandable that you feel that there is no choice but to opt out of life, but that is not the answer. I want you to remember that you were a complete and amazing being before you met your wife and you still are. Your heart will heal and you will create a new and better life for yourself. The traits you encompass as a wonderful man who is faithful, loving, respectful and honorable are the tools you need to pull yourself through this. Tap into the core of who you are and remember that you are a great man. I want you to do the following exercise three times a day: Ask yourself "What's right about today?" I want you to come up with three answers each time you ask it. Ask yourself at lunch, at dinner and before you go to bed, "What's RIGHT about today?" This is just the first step of your journey to rediscovering who you are and finding the joy and beauty in life. I've been married for almost 34 years and I've finally admitted to myself that my wife has been having an affair for the past seven years. I was in denial, but now I want a divorce. I'm having a tough time going through the process because I still love her. She doesn't want me to rush the process. It appears that she wants me to assist in financially supporting her. I feel that her boyfriend will not provide for her like I did. In fact, we wouldn't be in the financial bind we're in if I hadn't tried to provide for her above and beyond our means. How can I put this behind me and move on? -- Raymond Your wife is the one who broke your marriage vows, and she is the one who chose to betray your heart. You can no longer deny that and the only way for you to come to terms with this truth is to let go of the idea of who she was and embrace the real person standing in front of you. The woman you married so many years ago is now just a fantasy in your mind and the harsh reality is that your soon-to-be-ex-wife is going to try and get alimony so she can go and live a cushy life with her new boyfriend. Wake up and smell the betrayal. The best way to put it behind you is to expedite the divorce and push to make sure that you don't pay alimony since she is the one who broke the marriage vows. Brazilian keratin treatment When my mother recently told me that "I like that you can reverse a Brazilian treatment. In three months,
One for hair with a lot of frizz, one is for virgin hair and one is for processed hair. The strength depends on the kind of hair you have."
I should "look into that Brazilian keratin treatment," I knew there was a phenomenon I was unaware of in my happy, little natural-hair bubble. My sistas who love straight hair have known about this for a while, and now keratin treatments are insanely popular. To learn more about the procedure, I reached out to an expert. Martha Suarez at the(one of the most beautiful spas in Miami) has been offering the Brazilian hair treatment for four years, and she has been a hairdresser for 25. She gladly answered my questions, and I hope, in turn, to answer yours. Please keep in mind that English is not Martha's first language. But together, with patience, we were able to sort out all the issues regarding this hot hair treatment! Why do people seek out keratin treatments in the first place?
your hair releases the treatment. Whereas when you use the other relaxer, you cannot change that. You have to cut the hair because the ends are still processed with it. And the Brazilian treatment doesn't interfere with the other chemicals. However, if someone's using relaxer, and they make a decision to change and use the keratin, their ends are already straight. They will look very nice. But the roots or new growth will look more shiny and pretty. You will notice the difference.
"We use the blow-dryer and flat iron to seal the product. The temperature has to be 450 degrees - has to be very high. It transforms the methylene glycol into formaldehyde. But the percentage is so low that this does no damage to the hair. This particular treatment is amazing. The results are wonderful. I don't know any customer who is unhappy with the treatment. Many other times, we use other chemicals -- highlights, color -- that makes the hair very frizzy, but the Brazilian treatment is external and internal. It doesn't matter if the hair is overprocessed, it will always look much better. It stays in the hair for four or five months. If you have curly hair, it loosens the texture and makes the hair easier to straighten. It's an anti-frizz treatment more than a straightener," says Martha.
Step three:"Then we apply the cream, the keratin treatment. Then we blow-dry. The smell can be strong. We try to do it in an open area and clients can wear a mask if they are sensitive to strong smells. I blow-dry the hair to let the product evaporate at a medium temperature. Then we flat iron the hair -- a very small amount at a time. This is a timeconsuming part. With short hair, it takes two hours. We have to use a very thin, small amount of hair at a time. The longest it's taken has been five hours. If it's long hair, the steps need to be very slow. Sometimes the treatment is prolonged if the people want to get color or highlights -- they can do that prior to the keratin treatment." "I don't find anything against the product. If someone wants to do it, first look for a professional -- don't try to save money because this can cost more in the long run! Find a salon that has a great reputation, that uses reputable products and follow the instructions of the products to the letter. The only problem I can see is that people can become addicted to this treatment because it makes the hair look so wonderful," she gushed.
Martha warned consumers to be concerned about the quality of the product. "It's very important that they recommend a shampoo after the treatment. You have to recommend a sulfur-free shampoo. I never realized that so many products and shampoos use sulfur. Why would they do that? It is bad for the hair!" You should also be careful of who does your treatment. This ain't a DIY kind of thing.
"I really believdoes Martha recommend for anyone seeking this "One of the things that bothers most of my clients is the frizz. straightening treatment? Here in Miami, the humidity can be very high. Black Barbershop Outreach to Screen and Educate Black Men About Health
Going to the barbershop could mean more than getting a fresh Caesar, fade or lineup. Starting this Saturday in California, the Black Barbershop Health Outreach Program will be offering health screenings and health education to black men at 80 barbershops in 23 cities.
Black Man or twice as likely to die of prostate cancer then any other racial or ethnic group
The initiative is part of a larger program that will go nationwide and touch 50 cities in all. The goal is to educate and screen black men about diabetes, high blood pressure and the importance of early prostate cancer detection. "The need to address health care disparities in African American men is paramount in light of the fact that they have the lowest life expectancy of any group in the U.S.," said Dr. Bill J. Releford, a podiatric surgeon and founder of the Diabetic Amputation Prevention (DAP) Foundation who is leading the effort. "For decades, the black barbershop has served as a centralized gathering place, where African American men feel comfortable discussing the most important issues that impact their lives: politics, social trends, family and finances. Now, we are introducing an important discussion of health and the critical need for health awareness," Releford added. Saturday's event will target 80 barbershops and aims to screen more than 2,500 black men in Los Angeles, Long Beach, San Bernardino, Pomona, Riverside, Corona, Moreno Valley, Paris, Redlands, Inglewood,

Black men often suffer from diseases at a higher rate than other races. For example, black men are 30 percent more likely to die from heart disease and are
twice as likely to die of prostste cancer then any other racial or ethnic groupaccording to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Not only that, 26 percent of black men over the age of 18 smoke, and 36 percent of black men over the age of 20 are obese. Approximately 39 percent have hypertension. Overall, 13percent of us are in poor healthaccording to the CDC, but I suspect that number is higher. Since the project began in 2007, nearly 15,000 men in 23 cities, including New Orleans, Chicago, Atlanta, St. Louis and New York City (Harlem), have been tested. "This is an amazing program on many levels," said Dr. Keith Norris, interim president of Charles Drew University, one of the sponsors of the outreach effort. "Not only is the idea of screening African American men in barbershops critical for reaching many who may otherwise not be captured in the health care system, it creates a model for education and empowerment, which is needed to reduce health disparities." These terrible statistics don't even reflect the higher homicide rate that black men have to contend with. We need to stop killing one another and learn to be healthy. Not enough of us are living long enough to even collect Social Security. I don't know about you, but I picture myself in the barbershop years from now with my gray hair littering the floor. There's nothing wrong with being educated about your health. There's also nothing wrong with hanging around long enough to raise your family and contribute to your community, but you need to be healthy to do those things well. So, if you see the outreach program in your local barbershop, stop trash talking for a minute and listen up. After all, what's the use of looking clean if you feel terrible?
