Youth programs in Berks County get nearly $376,000 in grants The Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency has approved nearly $376,000 in grants for programs for young people to reduce crime and substance abuse in Berks County. "These grants will be used to work with at-risk youth and their families to help them avoid alcohol, tobacco and other substance abuse, as well as a life of crime," said House Judiciary Committee Chairman Thomas Caltagirone, a Berks County Democrat who serves on the crime and delinquency board. "Anything we can do to work with these kids to get them on the right path is a good investment in their future and in the overall betterment of the community. "I'm particularly excited that we were able to bring a major national study to Berks County - the Juvenile Justice System Improvement Project - to develop a better method of helping troubled youth in our region and across the state." The grant recipients: Berks County was awarded $175,000 and selected as the demonstration site of the Georgetown University Juvenile Justice System Improvement Project, which is aimed at creating more effective juvenile justice programs. Pennsylvania is one of only four states selected to participate in this project, which will include cutting-edge training based on the most recent research in juvenile justice system reform. The Council on Chemical Abuse in Berks County was awarded $89,981 to expand its Life Skills Training Program in the Reading School District. The program, which helps youth avoid alcohol, tobacco and drug use, as well as other high-risk behaviors, will be implemented by prevention specialists in the four middle schools and the intermediate school. The project will serve 420 seventh-grade students, 385 eighthgrade students and 285 ninth-grade students during a two-year period. The Berks County Counseling Center was awarded $111,225 to expand its Strengthening Families Program over a two-year period to families with children between the ages of 10 and 14. We Don’t Need Heroes. We Just Need You. By Bill Thompson We don’t need heroes, we don’t need self proclaimed prophets making forecast of promise; we need the people of America to be informed about what’s at stake in today’s political arena and to engage in a united effort to save our country. The United States of America is a beautiful place although, if we’re going to be honest, it has a sordid history. Despite the ugliness of America’s record the American people have historically risen up to rectify the problems that we faced. Due to the righteousness of our ancestors, laws were established that lead to immigrates being welcome to the new world, the emancipation of slaves, the right of all to vote, and educational and employment opportunities were made more equitable for all of our citizens. We had a common understanding that, we as a people are responsible for our fellow Americans and to uphold basis human rights. In today’s America, we stand divided. Our legislators have failed to recognize the troubling conditions that common Americans contend with each day. The talking heads of both parties may profess that they understand but they are no longer empathetic. Many politicians know that they are less likely to fall into the abyss of troubles that most middleclass Americans are desperately trying to avoid; that is, if they aren’t already drowning in dire straits. It seems that our representatives are more inclined to consider their own political survival than the dreadful circumstances that the middle class must endure daily. Yet, the average American remained reliant on these legislators to figure it out. These people aren’t superhuman and will never figure it out without our input. The problem with our deference is that it has created a cultural paradigm shift, which will take us back to the days before the civil rights movement and possibly before Franklin D Roosevelt’s New Deal. Our dormancy could result in the elimination of essential regulations, restrict voting rights, and end social programs that are greatly needed to maintain a modicum of balance between the classes. Do we want to be reduced to living in Hoover (shanty) towns and scrambling for crumbs to survive? We can no longer be plagued by the Genovese (A.K.A: Bystander) Syndrome. We must make it a priority to open our eyes to the reality of today’s America. Too many people are either in the throes of despair or on its precipice. It’s time to come together and stop the hemorrhaging. It’s time for civic engagement. It’s time to let our collective voice be heard. It’s time to demand equitable public policies. With solidarity we can make a difference. As Frederick Douglass has said “Power concedes nothing without demand – It never did and never will.”
