MENTAL FITNESS REV UP! Not only do we have to keep our bodies guessing‐ but our MINDS too! Don’t get it wrong ‐ routine IS good for us; it’s comforting and helps to keep us organized and less stressed; however,TOO MUCH routine can inhibit you.Your brain needs to be challenged, and you need to continuously grow no matter what your age. Think about how much routine you have in your life. Do you get up every morning and do the same thing day in and day out? If so, what can you do to change that up a bit? Can you change your lunchtime routine? What about making something different for dinner or turning off the TV and playing a game with the family instead? Or – you could take a course at the local college or take those guitar lessons that you always wanted to… there are so many options! Whether it is traveling to new places, shopping at a different grocery store now and then, learning a new game, a new language, trying new foods, meeting new people ‐ your rewards will contribute to a more stimulated mind and a healthier lifestyle

EXERCISE: PUSH YOURSELF & SWITCH IT UP! People often get into the same exercise routine day in and day out. This is great in the sense that you have found something you like and can stick with, but at the same time, you should try to vary your routine at least a little bit, and you should keep challenging yourself! After a certain point, your body won’t change anymore as it becomes used to doing the same workout every day.

Example: you walk on the treadmill every day for 35 minutes. Next time, try adding a few sprints in between walking. Or try walking a little bit faster, or experiment with different inclines. This is called interval training. Changing the intensity of the workout has been known to burn more calories, and it will rev up your fitness level. Try a different cardiovascular exercise machine or activity altogether such as: Elliptical Machine, Stepper, Swimming, or a class or workout video that challenges your current fitness level. Trying out various activities is a healthy thing to do, because you can vary the pace, body parts worked, and intensities. If you normally focus on cardiovascular exercise more than strength and flexibility, try to change your focus for a while to switch it up. Instead of spending most of your time at the gym on a cardio machine, spend most of your time on the weight machines, or try a class like Pilates or Yoga that focuses on strength and flexibility. If it feels like you’re just going through the motions, it’s not challenging enough! It is time to make a few changes. Keep your body guessing!
