Singing your way to stardom and catapulting to the top in the music industry is no easy task. Talent, patience, persistence and practice are key elements in order to succeed. Deja Ellison, a native of Reading, PA possess’ these elements. Deja has been singing since three years old. Now at age 13, her hard work and talent is paying off and making headways. “Deja started to sing at age three and I knew it was her gift,” says her mom Roxaine. “I once thought it was just me being her mom, but she has the whole city behind her, plus some.” Her parents Daryll Ellison Sr. and Roxaine Ovid, who also help to manage her career, noticed her talent and passion, so Deja started to work with vocal coach Marilyn Althouse. At age five, Marilyn had Deja sing solo at local assisted living facilities. These performances in front of a smaller audience helped Deja boost her confidence for a larger audience. Deja’s light started to shine and grow in more and more places. With the help and support of her family, more singing opportunities opened up. From winning the Apollo kids edition, to singing lead with the Harlem Boys Choir, Deja has made quite a name for herself. “I can’t believe how confident she is on stage,” says her father Daryll. “Each performance gets better and better.” It was the summer of 2011, when Deja’s career started to gain momentum. Brad Waples, Director of N.O.F.I.A Music Group, noticed Deja and started to help her record her own original music. Her first single, “Your Show” written and produced by Bynee Fattah, dropped in October of 2011. Thanks to Facebook fans for voting, this single made it on the Coast 2 Coast Mixtape Vol 185. Her second single “Hold Your Head Up”, written by Tracy Olivieri and produced by Bynee Fattah is about keeping your head up and pressing through obstacles to reach your dreams. Deja is also featured on Yung Cass’s track “Your My Star”. Deja’s patience has paid off; she is reaching new levels. She continues to work in the studio and is starting to learn how to write her own songs. Deja’s advice is to not let anything stop you from pursuing your dreams. “Be serious, stay focused, practice, stay away from negativity and you will make it” says Deja. Deja and her parents are excited to see what is in store for her. They know that they are in the beginning stages of something big. Radio Personality Tiffany Bacon has reached out to Deja by offering to give Deja half the proceeds from her “First Annual Dream Birthday Party”. If you would like to help Deja by attending the party, it will be held on February 11th at Elana's Soul, 4912 Baltimore Ave, Philadelphia, PA. Admission is $10.
