Chances are you’ve seen some version of this meme. It may have had various captions, but the image generally conveys the same message… whatever he’s trying to figure out is complicated! When it comes to dairy farming, you could title this image any number of ways. Increasing milk production; Improving pregnancy rates; Making genomic decisions; etc.! What might be opportunities to improve, may feel like continual challenges. What’s your approach to managing the many complicated scenarios that arise? Do you rely on numerous companies, each providing insight in their own limited realm of influence… do you go it alone, trying to be jack-of-all… or do you have a partner that appreciates the scope and complexity of your operation, like your CentralStar team? We believe there is value in the latter, which is exactly the conclusion Palm Boys LLC (cover photo) came to. A few months back we caught wind that Gary Vogel, one of the owners of Palm Boys was calling his CentralStar team “the mafia.” Of course, we wanted to know why, and Gary shared, “I call them the mafia because they do whatever is best for our farm, whenever we need it. We used to work with different companies, and it was a real pain. Now they just do it all... DHI, breeding, mating, milk pregnancy testing. They really are concerned about our farm and how to get us to where we want to be.” The following pages are designed to give you a glimpse of areas where CentralStar can help. Our team is well versed in reproduction, genetics, dairy production, milk quality and animal health, and our integrated nature allows us to work together to simplify processes and maximize your farm’s results. Pioneer Award 2019
The word pioneer describes a person who prepares the path to progress for the benefit of others. CentralStar’s Pioneer Award was established in 1977 by the East Central Board of Directors to recognize individuals who, through unselfish and dedicated service as leaders, have provided the Cooperative and its members greater prosperity today and a more secure tomorrow. Kathy Lee epitomized this description and the CentralStar Board of Directors posthumously presents her the 2019 Pioneer Award. “Kathy was a real advocate for the dairy industry, and in particular DHI,” said Mark Adam, CentralStar’s Chief Operating Officer. “For well-over 15 years she served on the Michigan DHI Board of Directors and the NorthStar DHI Advisory Committee helping to integrate DHI in the Cooperative and advance its use within the industry. Always an educator, Kathy prioritized working with producers, employees and industry representatives to improve their knowledge and use of DHI. She had a firm belief in the importance of using and understanding DHI data to improve herd performance and farm profitability.”

How much genetic emphasis does udder health deserve? by Dr. Dan Weigel, Research Director in Outcomes Research, Zoetis
Dairy producers have plenty on their plates, so it is no surprise that ‘trouble free’ is often at the top of the list of what they want in their cows. Genetic evaluations for Somatic Cell Score (SCS) and Productive Life (PL) have been available to U.S. dairy producers since 1994. More recently, genetic evaluations for clinical mastitis (CM) have become available. With all the traits that producers can choose from, an obvious question is how much emphasis should be given to udder health? Do genetic predictions for mastitis work? Zoetis began routine genetic evaluations for CM in 2016 and conducted a large validation study to see how well the predictions worked in commercial herds. The study sampled `2,000 springing Holstein heifers and approximately 800 cows that were freshening with their second calves. Because first lactation data were included for the cows, the data set contained about 2,900 records from first lactations and 900 records from second lactation. Cows were divided into four groups within herd and age group based on the genomic prediction for mastitis, and backup files were collected. The first set of bars in Figure 1 show the percentage of cows that were recorded as having at least one case of mastitis in the first year of the study for each group. As we would guess, the amount of mastitis in mainly first lactation heifers is quite low, but the worst group (15.9%) had about double the mastitis as the best group (8.5%). These results were published in the Journal of Dairy Science (JDS). A year later, backup files were collected again from the same herds. The second set of data showed that the incidence of mastitis increased as cows progressed into second and third lactation. We can see that the predictions show a clearer trend across the four groups, and that the worst group (25.3%) continued to have nearly double the mastitis of the best genetic group (13.0%). 6
Figure 1
Estimated incidence of producer recorded mastitis in 11 herds in quartiles based on herd rank for genomic enhanced mastitis genetic predictions (Z_Mast). The solid fill bars are from JDS, McNeel et al. and hatched bars are results from adding another year of observation to the study cows.
Under the current U.S. dairy economic conditions, some producers are adopting a strategy of lowering herd turnover rate. The goals of this effort are to lower costs by raising fewer replacement heifers, increase milk production by having more of the herd near maturity, and increase revenue by use of some beef semen. Of course, the downside is that older cows have more health issues, especially mastitis. The bottom line is that the more cows that are more resistant to mastitis, the better.
Enhancing producer profitability through integrated services.
Are we making genetic progress for clinical mastitis? The ability to select for SCS is particularly useful because producers are paid directly for lower bulk tank SCS, but also because of the genetic correlation to mastitis. The genetic correlation between SCS and CM has been estimated to be anywhere from -0.68 to -0.47 in Holsteins. This genetic correlation would be similar to that between fat pounds and protein pounds. For those traits, we generally see bulls that are good for fat tend to be good for protein, but it is easy to find bulls where that is not the case. Since we know that genetic correlations change over time (the improving correlation between Daughter Pregnancy Rate (DPR) and production is an example), we might wonder how much progress has been made from selecting on SCS. Figure 2 shows the average sire Estimated Breeding Value (EBV = 2X Predicted Transmitting Ability (PTA)) from the December 2018 Council on Dairy Cattle Breeding (CDCB) evaluations of A.I. bulls (N = 5,509) for both SCS and CM resistance. Bulls were required to have ≥75% reliability for CM resistance. The vertical axis for both traits are scaled to be ~2X the estimated standard deviation for each EBV so that the progress can be gauged relative to that possible given the genetic spread in the population. On a relative basis, we have made a lot more (about 5X!) progress for SCS than for CM.
FIGURE 2
The average sire Estimated Breeding Value (EBV) by birth year for sires with ≥75% estimated reliability for clinical mastitis resistance (N = 5,509) in the December 2018 CDCB evaluations.
Estimated Breeding Values are used as they relate directly to actual performance, whereas PTA is only what a sire (or dam) transmits to their calves. The interpretation of the mastitis resistance EBV is that sires born in 2003 (average EBV = -1.1) would have 3% less CM than sires born in 2013 (average EBV = 1.9) if they were lactating females. So yes, progress for CM has been made, but not at the rate of SCS.
What is the value of genetic progress? The 2018 version of USDA’s Lifetime Net Merit Index (NM$) includes the trait of CM resistance with a weighting of <1% (0.77%) of the total (Table 1). As with any index, the genetic correlations among the other traits in the index (along with their weighting) must be considered when estimating the expected genetic change in the trait from selecting on the index. After a bit of math, we can see the estimated economic benefit from the genetic progress for improving CM is ~$0.30/year (Table 2) or about 0.47% of the total $63.18 progress. Interestingly,
Table 1
Table 2
this progress is slightly less than expected in the previous NM$ formula that did not include the new health traits.
Conclusion
Genetic predictions for CM offer U.S. producers the ability to select for Holstein females that are more resistant to mastitis. Field studies have shown that improving genetic ability for mastitis resistance will lead to real reductions in the herd incidence of mastitis. That said, the current formulation of NM$, which many producers use, applies very little selection pressure to the trait of CM. Therefore, it is important to evaluate if the traits you are selecting for are effective in achieving your herd’s genetic goals or if it is time to revisit them.

SUBCLINICAL HYPOCALCEMIA BREWS BELOW THE SURFACE.
While clinical hypocalcemia, or “milk fever,” is the more obvious threat to freshening cows, it’s the silent subclinical hypocalcemia that can be more destructive. More common and harder to detect, it causes a drop in calcium levels that can creep up in the form of suppressed immune health and decreased productivity. Learn more at StartwithBovikalc.com. Selecting for mastitis resistance by Jess Jakubik, Genetic Consultant, CentralStar Cooperative
As our industry has changed, so have the genetic traits you can select for your herd. While TPI® and Net Merit (NM$) have long been the standard, many producers CentralStar works with are placing more emphasis on health and wellness traits in their genetic selection process. Production and functional type traits have improved greatly
with the advent of genomics, creating cattle that yield more dollars in the bulk tank and have the structure needed to last in the herd. In recent years, this has led producers to place more emphasis on selecting for a healthier cow that makes more money and saves more in the form of reduced vet bills and costly recovery time.
WT$ focuses exclusively on six wellness traits (mastitis, lameness, metritis, retained placenta, displaced abomasum and ketosis) and includes an economic value for Polled test results. One way to identify sires that excel in health and wellness traits within the Select Sires lineup is to look for the WellnessPRO® designation. Select Sires top bulls for WT$ are designated WellnessPRO indicating the greatest chance to make a positive impact on wellness by reducing the genetic risk of common dairy cow diseases.
If you are among those that are interested in intensifying your selection for health traits, such as mastitis resistance, it may be time to learn about the Dairy Wellness Profit® (DWP$) and Wellness Trait® (WT$) indexes. Developed by Zoetis, DWP$ and WT$ combine realworld economics with genetic evaluation data.
DWP$ acts similarly to TPI and NM$ as it combines traits for an overall rating, placing an added emphasis on health traits in addition to type and production. This multi-trait selection index includes production, fertility, type, longevity and the wellness traits, including Polled test results. Selection for DWP$ can result in a difference of lifetime profit of more than $1,200 between the top 10th percentile of ranked animals and the bottom 10th.

Don’t be alarmed, it’s not that kind of audit, it’s a genetic audit. Genetic audits are a systematic exam of your herd’s genetic levels, including a review of your goals and plans to achieve them. It shows how genetics are expressed in your herd. Essentially, it ensures that the genetics you are buying for your herd are helping you achieve your goals, while creating the number of replacements you really need. How a genetic audit works Genetic audits start with information from your dairy management program, such as DairyComp 305 and PCDART. The herd’s data is sorted into genetic quartiles using each animals’ pedigree. Through the audit, we evaluate production traits, such as milk, fat and protein; along with health traits including Daughter Pregnancy Rate (DPR), Productive Life (PL) and Somatic Cell Score (SCS) to see how they affect cow performance within the herd. As the tables show, there is a substantial difference in how your genetically superior cows perform on your dairy. Create a plan Does your dairy have a breeding plan? If the answer is YES, that’s great! But now
the harder question; when was the last time you evaluated it? It’s important to annually review, and revise (if necessary) your breeding plan to help ensure you are purchasing genetics that will help you achieve your goals. If the answer is NO, it’s time to create one. First, consider how you are paid for your milk and what type of cows are most profitable for your operation. By identifying these factors and others your team feels will maximize the profit of the dairy, you can effectively establish your goals.

Another important piece of the process is to understand herd inventory needs. In other words, how many heifers do you really need? The strategic use of sexed semen allows you to create heifers from your best genetics, while beef semen can be used to create a terminal dairy cross with lower genetic value animals. Implementing an approach like this accelerates genetic progress and reduces heifer inventories, ultimately saving you money. Once you’ve executed a plan, don’t forget about the final and ongoing step, follow-up. It’s important to review your plan annually to ensure your goals still align with your actions; while inventory management numbers should be reviewed quarterly. Bring it all together It might be hard to visualize all that has been explained, so look below and to the right. The tables are real examples of herds that we work with that realize the value of a genetic audit. If you don’t have a genetic plan in place or if it has been a while since it has been reviewed, it’s time to schedule one. The CentralStar team is well versed in genetic planning and inventory management and are eager to help you achieve your goals.
Creating goals is critically important. Using genetic indexes such as Dairy Wellness Profit® (DWP$), Net Merit Dollars (NM$) and TPI® are often great places to start when selecting genetics. However, don’t get caught up in “chasing a number.” Remember, NM$ by Lactation Group genetic proofs on individual bulls change Age Group Percent Count NM$ every four months and not Average all bulls are created equal. ReproStar Award Winners
Dairy LLC Center: Ashley Risner, Maurice Loehmer surrounded by CentralStar team Rex Reinholt, Mike McCay, Mark Affolder, Tim Schmidt, Scott McLaughlin
In 2019, CentralStar created the ReproStar Award to recognize dairy producers for their accomplishments with reproductive proficiency. Dairies throughout Wisconsin, Indiana and Michigan were nominated by CentralStar team members. Dairies were grouped by herd size: < 500 cows, 500 – 1500 cows and > 1,500 cows, with one winner selected for each category. A panel of three judges reviewed each dairy’s data, considering multiple factors that affect pregnancy rates. Herd turnover rates were also considered because of the widely acknowledged payback with effective heifer reproduction programs. The award winners may have different approaches to achieving high reproductive efficiency, but a message that remained consistent across the group was, “details make the difference.” Here’s a recap of a few of the little things that have had a big impact on reproductive results in these herds. • Compliance. Follow protocols every time. • Gun Warmers are used year-round to ensure semen is kept at an optimal temperature, particularly in the winter months. • Double sheaths keep inseminations as clean as possible and reduce potential contamination of breeding equipment. • Thaw baths, scissors, breeding guns and other tools are maintained and cleaned regularly. While their numbers reflect success, it’s the process each farm takes to get there that proves most interesting. Read what our award winners and their CentralStar team members have to share about the journey.

Loehmer Monterey, Indiana
Consistency and compliance are key to the Loehmer Dairy program. To have those, you must have a great team, and owner Maurice Loehmer and daughter Ashley Risner have built just that. “You must have people who enjoy their work and are committed to the process and the end goal,” shared Maurice. “Having solid protocols, along with people who understand them and are committed to doing what is needed makes all the difference in achieving goals,” added Ashley. The breeding program at Loehmer Dairy starts with Double OvSynch and tail chalk. Shots are administered by in-house staff, Lazaro Torres and Rigo Torres, and CentralStar A.I. Specialist Scott McLaughlin works with Ashley to breed. Cows are pregnancy checked by ultrasound between 28-30 days. Open cows with a CL are enrolled in G2, while the rest are enrolled in L3. Cows are bred until about 250 days and are then put on the do not breed (DNB) list in PCDART. The farm uses a variety of metrics to monitor reproductive performance, including a weekly review of palpation pregnancy rates. The CentralStar team sites lots of reasons why Loehmer Dairy is seeing reproductive success including the switch to Double OvSync two years ago, commitment to compliance, and attention to details. “They do a lot of little things right,” shared Scott, “and it makes a huge difference in the herd’s reproduction. Not all farms are committed to taking care of the details, but this dairy is proof that it pays.” Loehmer Dairy is a perfect example of what can happen when a reproductive strategy is chosen and all involved are on-board to ensure its success. “Having healthy cows is the most important factor to our improved pregnancy rate,” said McClellan Farms Herd Manager Bill Mansfield. “Another contributor is using an activity system. You can tail chalk all you want, but unless you are watching for heats 24 hours a day you won’t catch every cow – and that’s where having a system is valuable.”
Steve, Elizabeth and Malissa Reed, Kelly Raterink, CentralStar Area Sales Manager
Owosso, Michigan
A combination approach including timed A.I. and the CowManager® activity monitoring system, is key to the high reproductive performance at Reed Dairy Farm. A family operation, Elizabeth Reed is responsible for daily operations, including the reproduction program; while her dad, Steve assists with oversight of the farm and helps on breeding days, and sister Malissa, provides mating recommendations for the herd.
At McClellan Farms, cows are bred twice daily, based on a combination of timed A.I. and activity monitoring. The activity system identifies cycling and non-cycling cows to selectively enroll cows in timed A.I. Cows with regular heats before 4550 DIM are bred from the activity alerts. Cows with irregular cycles or not showing heats, are enrolled in a G2 PreSynch/ OvSynch program at 80 DIM. Pregnancy verification is done by ultrasound at 25-32 days. Open cows are reenrolled in OvSynch, with second lactation and greater cows receiving two shots of Lutalyse® 24 hours apart.
The breeding program starts with PreSynch/OvSynch, with all cows bred between 73-80 DIM. Cows that come back in heat after the OvSynch breeding are identified with CowManager and are quickly re-inseminated. Eighty percent of the breeding occurs in the morning, with a few afternoon services when identified by CowManager. Pregnancy checks are performed by ultrasound every two weeks and open cows are reenrolled in OvSynch. “It’s unusual to have a cow called open, because if they aren’t pregnant to the OvSynch breeding, we are catching them with CowManager,” said Elizabeth. “We routinely see 80 percent pregnant on herd health day.”
While there is no hard and fast rule, they stop breeding cows at about 240 DIM, considering production level, health status and number of services. Bill watches several metrics, but 21-day pregnancy rate is the primary number to monitor herd performance.
The dairy stops breeding cows at about 250 DIM, at which time they are entered on a cull list in PCDART and marked do not breed. Of all the metrics monitored, Reed Dairy puts palpation rate at the top of the list. “We monitor palpation rate the closest because it tells us if we’re watching for repeat breedings,” said Elizabeth. “When palpation rate is good, everything else falls into place. It really boils down to getting cows rebred.”
Owners Tom McClellan and Wes Hopkins rely on their team to ensure the reproductive program is on track. “Hector (Mendoza) does 90 percent of the breeding and he does a really good job with the details,” says Bill. “We stick to our SOPs (standard operating procedures). Shots are given on time, every time. These things may seem little, but they make a difference in generating pregnancies.” “The farm has strict protocols for cow management. Whether it is milking procedures, calf and heifer management or reproductive protocols, everyone follows the guidelines ensuring optimal health, and reaching the farm’s goals,” said Dave Sattler, CentralStar Area Sales Manager.

Ca hing in on retirement by Doug Moyer, Director, DHI Services, CentralStar Cooperative
Is there such a thing as a good problem? Bulk tank overflowing? Crowded calf barn? Not enough bunk space? Getting to choose which cows to retire? Many herds have seen the benefits of improved reproduction manifest themselves in a need to remove cows from the herd to keep overcrowding at a minimum. The problem is, who should go? There is no single answer. Every situation demands a different strategy, but here are a few tools to consider using as you decide which cows make the cut. Knowing the relative difference between cows in your herd is the true value of DHI testing. How else do you fairly compare cows to ensure you are keeping and culling the right ones? By all means, start with the easy ones... the kickers, cows with bad quarters and the mean ones. But then what? If pounds of milk are your primary discriminator when comparing cows, I beg you to reconsider. Comparing your cows on milk alone is like comparing two fields of corn by how many tons per acre they yielded. What about the starch level, or digestibility, isn’t that what really matters? Assuming you agree with my train of thought let’s explore how to better evaluate retirement plans for your herd. Start by using Energy Corrected Milk (ECM) to decide who your most productive cows are. The concept of ECM isn’t new so I won’t go into detail here, but the basic idea is it will provide a more equitable comparison of cow’s production by including the value of the 18
components they produce. Your cow that milks 180 pounds a day that you are so proud of will probably still rank pretty good, so no harm done. For our purposes, we won’t worry about her, but will use her as an example. She’s not leaving either way. But she does bring me to my next point. Next, look at your milk check, once you’re over wishing the decimal place would jump to the right one or two spots, notice the things you are PAYING for on a cwt basis. Now think about that 180-pound cow again. ECM will adjust her production based on her components but that is where it stops. She might appear equal to a cow producing 130 pounds of milk with higher components on an ECM basis, but she is costing you more money because of all that added water weight. That leads you to your next step of evaluating Money Corrected Milk (MCM).
MCM is calculated using actual data from your milk check. It considers how you are actually paid for a cow’s individual production, and what it costs you to sell that product. It provides a clear picture of the income a cow actually generates. Determining which cows to retire is a lot like planning your own retirement. The more information you have and variables you can pin down, the better insights you can make and the more prepared you can be when deciding what moves to take. If you’re currently DHI testing with CentralStar and not taking full advantage of the available retirement tools for your cows, I urge you to find some time to learn how to use them. If you’re not DHI testing, I’d ask you how much you really know about the cows in your herd and if you can afford to retire the wrong ones?

Genetic progress
Culling decisions
Dave Sattler, Area Sales Manager
Nathan Kuhns, DHI Specialist
Herds that make the most genetic progress have a plan that takes the emotion out of semen purchases. Sire selection is data driven, and reviewed two or three times a year with the CentralStar team. Selection often focuses on traits that can create high producing trouble-free cows, like NM$, DWP$, etc.
SCC and low milk production are common reasons producers cull cows. As the barn fills up, we look harder for cows that are falling behind their herd mates. I encourage producers to look at their DHI data and use the tools available to them to get a more complete picture like ECM (Energy Corrected Milk) or MCM (Money Corrected Milk). Over the years heard health and production continue to improve, so I counsel them to keep looking harder at the data to make the best culling decisions.
An effective breeding strategy is to use a combination of sexed, conventional and beef semen to meet the genetic and inventory goals of the herd. The Select Sires calculator for semen usage has been very accurate and effective at producing the number of heifer calves needed for replacements.

familiar story An all too
by Michelle Kaufmann, Customer Solutions Advisor, CentralStar Cooperative
The bulk tank SCC has been creeping up for a while. Tony thought he knew what the problem was, so he made some changes. No improvement. The veterinarian suggested trying culture. No growth results were returned. The milk co-op ran culture. Contamination was reported. Milking equipment was checked, and all was in proper working order. Nothing was getting Tony answers, and an unhappy ending to his mastitis story seemed inevitable. Then one of his CentralStar team members asked, “Have you thought about running a Mastitis PCR test?” He had not. After a conversation regarding the benefits of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assays, he decided to give it a try to help identify what pathogens were causing the problem. What did he have to lose? Fortunately, his story began to shift as more of the CentralStar team got involved. On the next DHI test day, Tony requested the Complete 16 PCR on the top 10 percent of high SCC cows. In the laboratory, pooling samples allowed testing costs to be cut by 80 percent, while still identifying that contagious pathogens (Strep ag, Staph aureus, and Mycoplasma bovis) were not big factors in this mastitis problem. With the big three ruled out, where should Tony focus? The Complete 16 Mastitis Report (next page) indicated that the most prevalent pathogen was Enterococcus. Like many producers might, Tony wondered what Enterococcus was? He turned to CentralStar’s technical support to find out that Enterococcus is typically found in organic matter and plant material (such 20
as straw bedding), and in manure. Relieved to finally know what pathogen the farm was dealing with; it took insights from the SCC View report to show which groups were showing the greatest infection rate. In this case it was the fresh cows whose SCC had been steadily increasing since spring, as indicated by the graph (next page), % New Infections at Calving (Lact 2+). Armed with this information, CentralStar continued support by participating in an on-farm evaluation, and the maternity pen was the first stop. Sure enough, Tony’s impression that things were going okay didn’t quite capture the current reality in the maternity pen. It turned out employees were having a tough time keeping up and keeping it clean. Looking back, it became apparent that the trouble began in the spring during planting season when they were stretched thin on help and had continued well into the year. Instead of cleaning and adding straw every other day, it was only happening once a week. Tony met with his team refocusing their efforts in the maternity pen, and almost Enhancing producer profitability through integrated services.
immediately bulk tank SCC levels began to improve. The next month’s DHI test results saw the highest individual cow SCC threshold lower than the previous month. Checking the SCC View report showed the percent of new infections after calving was also trending down. As a preventative measure, a mastitis protocol was established to test the top 10 percent of SCC cows identified at each monthly DHI test day. The strategy ensured mastitis control was moving in the right direction, reducing Enterococcus, and allowed monitoring for any new pathogens that might also be on the rise at the farm.
While scenarios like this are all too common, it is possible to avoid the scariest stories by using proactive and comprehensive approaches to detect, monitor and manage SCC levels. Conducting regular DHI tests, routinely reviewing your DHI data including the SCC View report and implementing a regular Mastitis PCR testing protocol can help you stay ahead of a bulk tank spike so that there’s a better chance your story has a happy ending.

Organisms Detected - Pool 1
The far left column shows the individual animals in the pool, followed by that animal’s individual SCC value from the DHI test performed. With the Complete 16 PCR, samples are tested for 16+ different pathogens, however, only those actually detected in the sample are listed on the report in the “Organisms Detected” column. The “Value” column indicates the Ct (cycles to threshold) value and the “Final Result” column shows the corresponding plus signs (+) that are associated with those Ct values. The lower the Ct value, the more “+” signs. This is because Ct values are interpreted as lower numbers equating to higher amounts of pathogen DNA in a sample (i.e. the lower the number, the stronger the prevalence within the sample). Thus, a Ct value of 21.3 for Enterococcus gains a (+++) final result.
How to use Mastitis PCR Testing Mastitis PCR tests are an effective way to detect, monitor and manage SCC levels, and can be used in many ways.
Hospital Pen/Treated Cows: Analyze samples from cows in the hospital pen to identify culprit organisms and help develop treatment plans. PCR can be used on treated cows to determine if the infection has cleared. Clinical Mastitis: Collect samples from cows showing clinical signs of mastitis, or cows that are positive on a California Mastitis Test (CMT). Sample only affected quarters of treated or untreated cows to focus on cause of the current infection. Bulk Tank/Pen Samples: Not sure what the problem might be? Submit a sample from your bulk tank or specific pens to screen for problem organisms. Bulk tank/ pen samples can be monitored monthly to provide baseline levels and identify spikes in pathogens. Fresh Cows: Test recently fresh cows that are at greatest risk for infection as a result of immunosuppression during calving.
This graph is part of the SCC View and in this herd shows a steady increase in the past four months of cows infected at freshening. While the most recent test day is only slightly above goal, the recent trend identifies this is an area to investigate and make adjustments to stop a continued climb.

Purchased Animals: Test purchased cows for contagious mastitis pathogens such as Staph aureus, Mycoplasma bovis, and Strep agalactiae. Collect samples from all incoming cows at their first milking; samples can be pooled together and run as a screening program with the Contagious 4 Mastitis PCR. Samples can also be used to test for BVD, BLV, and Johne’s, all of which pose risks to a growing dairy herd. High/Chronic SCC Cows: Identify chronically infected cows using DHI records and submit samples for targeted testing. Whether you routinely DHI test or not, using a Mastitis PCR test is an effective way to manage SCC.

A1/A2 (beta-casein)
Johne’s
• Identifies the genotype of the beta-casein protein.
• Bacterial disease transmitted by infected manure. Causes decreased milk production, chronic diarrhea, death.
• A2 milk is potentially more digestible than milk containing A1 beta-casein, which is metabolized differently during digestion. • Test whole blood, tissue or milk.
• Test cattle, goats and sheep by milk, blood or fecal samples at dryoff or in early lactation. • Select ELISA (antibody) or PCR (organism) detection. Individual cow or pooled analysis.
Bovine Leukosis (BLV) • Viral disease transmitted by infected body fluids. Negatively impacts production, longevity, cull value.
Mastitis
• Test individual cows by milk or blood, or 40 select cows to efficiently determine herd prevalence.
• PCR detection effective on DHI or hand-stripped milk samples from treated, fresh or late lactation cows.
• Screen cows by ELISA then submit samples from BLV-positive cows for PCR testing. • Select individual or pooled ELISA analysis. • PCR test can identify susceptible cows that have become “Super Shedders,” causing the most risk to uninfected herdmates and young stock.
• Reduces milk and production value.
• Convenient testing options include: – High SCC samples to focus testing on cows most likely infected – Fresh cows to optimize detection and minimize herd impact – Hospital pen to monitor infection status and verify clearance before reintroduction – Bulk tank or groups to provide ongoing surveillance
Bovine Neospora
• Protozoan disease associated with dogs, widely implicated in abortion outbreaks. • Test individuals or groups of aborting and non-aborting cattle to associate Neospora with abortions.
Bovine Viral Diarrhea (BVD) • Viral disease transmitted by aerosols. Reduces reproductive performance by decreasing conception and inducing abortion. Persistently Infected (PI) calves developed in-utero lead to frequent death, poor performance, ongoing reinfection. • Test ear notch or serum from calves to identify PI. Test individual or pooled milk from cows to efficiently clear adult herd of PI suspicion.
• PCR Test Options: • Complete 16 PCR detects Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus species, Streptococcus agalactiae, Streptococcus dysgalactiae, Streptococcus uberis, Escherichia coli, Corynebacterium bovis), Enterococcus faecalis , & faecium, Klebsiella pneumoniae & oxytoca, Serratia marcescens, Arcanobacterium pyogenes & Peptostreptococcus indolicus, Staphylococcal beta-lactamase gene, Mycoplasma bovis, Mycoplasma species, Yeast and Prototheca species. • Contagious 4 detects M bovis, Strep ag., Staph aureus, Strep uberis • Single Organism detects M bovis or Staph aureus

Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) is a DNA test just like in crime scene investigations. DNA is extracted from milk, blood, tissue, or feces and combined with other reagents in a chemical reaction that makes exponentially more copies of DNA of a specific sequence, ie., Staph aureus bacteria. The equipment determines how many cycles of this reaction are required to cross a certain threshold, yielding a “Ct” (cycles to threshold) value. The lower the Ct, the fewer the cycles, and the more Staph aureus present in the sample. The resulting Ct then gets assigned a “Positive” or “Undetected” diagnosis. Simple Solutions To Complicated Problems The Select BioCycle™ Family of Products Select BioCycle™
Enhances Metabolism Increased Estrus Expression Feed during ration changes and low toxins
Select BioCycle™ Plus
Select DTX™
Immune modulation, combats environmental and feed challenges, helps with SCS, abortions, transition problems and improves milk quality and quantity.
Enhances metabolism, combats severe environmental and feed challenges, improves rumen function during stress from changes in ration.
Proven Performance
Unique Technology
Thousands of dairy and beef producers have seen the results from this family of direct-fed microbial products and report:
Much more than a microbial, the BioCycle™ family of products is based on cutting-edge L-form technology. Often you cannot maximize your herd’s performance, reproduction, and genetic potential because of the animal’s inability to deal with stress. The L-form Lactobacillus, along with the other specialized ingredients, enhances an animal’s immune system to overcome the negative effects of everyday challenges and stress.
• Stronger heats • Better feed utilization • Improved reproductive performance • Lower somatic cell counts • Less metabolic problems • Fresh cows off to a better start • Higher fat tests • Healthier calves

BIG BOOK
“We used to work with different companies, and it was a real pain. Now CentralStar does it all... DHI, breeding, mating, milk pregnancy testing. This crew acts like they own the farm. They tell me things I don’t want to hear, but in the long run it’s what is best now, and for the longevity of the farm. They really are concerned about our farm and how to get us to where we want to be.” ~Gary Vogel, Palms Boys LLC, Palms, Michigan
