“Having a strong support staff around us is crucial; so, when problems arise you can diagnose them, remedy them. Also, when you set goals, it’s good to have a number of eyes looking at all the variables to try and reach those goals and assess things when they need to be looked at.” Rademacher-Meier Dairy Sun Prairie, Wis.

The whole is greater than the sum of the parts To truly maximize outcomes, a holistic approach to managing your dairy requires that you work with organizations that understand their role within something larger. At CentralStar, we know the whole is greater than the sum of the parts, which is why we focus on offering services that provide an integrated approach to supporting your operation. We appreciate that it’s not just the pieces, it’s how they work together that makes the difference. More than 20 years ago, the CentralStar board of directors changed the course of the cooperative, from being singularly focused on genetics to what we are today. Former CentralStar board president, and this year’s Pioneer Award Winner, Ken Gasper, shared his thoughts on the importance of the cooperative doing what it can to help the farmer. With that philosophy in mind, the board prioritized expansion of services to include DHI, diagnostic testing and consulting. Those decisions paved the way for a fully integrated CentralStar team to deliver greater results for our customers. This Big Book highlights products, services and methods which make managing your farm easier or more effective. Inside you will find PROTIPs on calf care, and other areas; products most often used by producers; and tools CentralStar’s R&D team

are developing to drive the industry forward. We commend the reproductive efficiency of seven farms and recognize other successful operations for their year-end DHI production results. You will also find QR codes throughout, giving you quick and easy access to more information on topics that interest you most. We live in an information age and while it can be overwhelming at times, know that your CentralStar team can help filter through the noise. We value the trust we’ve earned and continue to build on the cornerstone of delivering on our mission to “enhance producer profitability through integrated services.” We are here because you are here. By providing what is “good for the farmer” we strive for the future. On behalf of the CentralStar team,

SUBCLINICAL HYPOCALCEMIA BREWS BELOW THE SURFACE.

While clinical hypocalcemia, or “milk fever,” is the more obvious threat to freshening cows, it’s the silent subclinical hypocalcemia that can be more destructive. More common and harder to detect, it causes a drop in calcium levels that can creep up in the form of suppressed immune health and decreased productivity. Learn more at StartwithBovikalc.com.

Pioneer Award 020 2

K

en Gasper was selected as the 2020 Pioneer Award recipient. Ken served on the NorthStar Cooperative board of directors from 1983-2013 and was president for 11 years. He also served on the Select Sires board from 1990-2013. Ken attended Michigan State University and upon graduation worked for Michigan Animal Breeders Cooperative as a sub-technician. He then returned to the home farm, Lew-Max Holsteins in Belding, Michigan to help his father. In 1972 he married Jane Majinska and they had four children, Nikki, Aaron, Maddie and Jamie. Today Aaron is the fifth-generation owner of LewMax, LLC. We recently caught up with Ken to ask about his experiences with the cooperative. Why did you get involved in the cooperative? I was always interested in genetics and looking at bull books and thought it would be a good organization to serve. My dad felt you had to give something back to your cooperative and community and this was my way of doing that. When I decided to run for the board of directors, a farmer from another county said, “if you are going to work for the farmer, I’ll take care of getting the votes in my county.” There were six people that ran for that position that year. While serving on the board, what decisions were made that brought value to customers and members? My theory was the board should do whatever we could to help the farmer. If we kept what the farmer needed at the front of our decisions it would help the cooperative. That is how we decided to bring in DHI and create AntelBio (diagnostics services). As a board we tried to think outside the box. With DHI it was something dairymen needed and if we could help, we should. With AntelBio we invested in the idea of diagnostics in milk samples, that was also something we thought would benefit the farmer. During this same time the cooperative started providing dairy records analysis, which was good for the farmer and was another way to promote the cooperative.

My theory was the board should do whatever we could to help the farmer.

Why is it important to be involved in the cooperative? It’s important you stay involved with your industry. By serving on the board you have a say in the business of the cooperative, compared to other types of business that are only worried about how much money they can pay to their shareholders, that are most likely not involved in the industry. I think cooperatives are still relevant today if they are willing to stay up with the changing times. The CentralStar Pioneer Award was established in 1977 to recognize individuals who, through unselfish and dedicated service as leaders, have provided the Cooperative and its members greater prosperity today and a more secure tomorrow.

Any other thoughts you would like to share? I always kept the patronage check in the barn office, and I would show it to the competition when they would stop. I’d ask them, “how much patronage do you give the farmer?” After a while they just stopped coming by.

A glimpse of what’s new

A1/A2 Assay

Bovine Leukosis Research

Late Embryonic Mortality

In response to market demand, a DNAbased test was developed to determine the A1/A2 genotype of dairy cattle across multiple sample types: blood, tissue and milk. Accuracy in each sample type is comparable to assays available at other genotyping laboratories, at a reduced cost of $10 per sample. Both blood and tissue samples achieve over 99% accuracy whereas DHI-collected milk samples achieve up to 94% accuracy due to carryover contamination. DHI milk can be used as a convenient screen when initiating a breeding program. Blood or tissue sample testing on replacements is best to select for A2-only milk production.

Over $800,000 in funding has been secured for field trials to determine optimal testing and management programs for BLV. Two collaborative field trials representing 10,000+ animals in nine herds in Michigan and Wisconsin are testing the utility of the CentralStar BLV SS1 qPCR Proviral test (BLV SS1), which identifies the most infectious animals in the herd. Utilizing the BLV SS1 test allows herds, even with high prevalence, to control the spread of disease without significant culling. A new five-year USDA funded BLV field trial is also underway to investigate how BLV is transmitted among young stock.

Pregnancy loss following an initial pregnancy diagnosis accounts for significant economic losses to dairy producers. Novel microRNAs were found in milk from cows undergoing late embryonic mortality (LEM), indicating the physiological process of abortion or embryo resorption. Of 500 microRNAs found among all experimental groups, 25 microRNA biomarkers were discovered that are unique to cows undergoing LEM. If validated, a test capable of detecting terminal pregnancies could allow producers to re-synchronize and breed back these cows to reduce days open.

PRODUCERPicks The inside scoop on why these products are chosen most often by producers.

Select DTX™

Milk Pregnancy Test

First Day Formula® CR

Mix in feed to improve nutrient digestion, immune function and minimize the effects of mold-produced mycotoxins.

Confirm pregnancy as early as 28 days, with accuracy equal to traditional methods. Test DHI samples or send direct to lab. Results in 24 hours.

Feed to newborn calves as colostrum replacement or supplement. Contains 150 grams of globulin proteins (IgG) per feeding. Mixes easily.

“I find herds feeding DTX have healthier, more fertile cows, needing less labor for repeat breedings and to treat sick cows. DTX is a broad-spectrum solution that works well on a variety of toxins. Vomitoxin has a big impact on production and reproduction and we find it a lot in the feed we test. DTX works really well against the effects of Vomitoxin, especially compared to a binder. Having a well-proven product in the ration is good insurance.”

“Labor is a big issue on farms and using the milk pregnancy test helps with time management and labor at the farm. Working with the Vet, we design testing protocols that fit the needs of the farm and their facilities. A big advantage of the milk pregnancy test is it keeps you from disrupting a cow’s day... they can rest, eat, drink and make milk like they are supposed to.”

“I look for ways to make things easier and help producers be more profitable, and First Day does that. It has been proven that when you feed First Day, calves get 99.8% passive transfer of the needed IgG’s which gets them off to a great start. Studies show when calves have successful passive transfer, they are healthier and more productive as cows. First Day mixes easier than other products. Once a farm tries First Day, they buy more.”

Ever y day is a

“BIG DAY” Doug Moyer

Technical Advisor, CentralStar Cooperative

W

henever kids have a test or game the next day, we do what we can to ensure they get to bed early so they are well rested. “You’ve got a BIG day tomorrow,” we will say, which translated by an eight-yearold means it’s a good night to stay up late reading his Kindle and sneaking sugar cookies. Why don’t they take us seriously! Sleep and rest are our body’s natural restorative. Caffeine, as wonderful as it is, is a distant second and is never a good substitute – hence rest up for your “Big Day.” So where am I going with this? Cows like humans need rest to run at peak performance, but the difference is you want every day to be a “Big Day” for your cows. Yes, maximum production starts with good genetics but is captured because of good feed, good management, and comfortable cows. Rest is an important factor in cow comfort and one that is often overlooked. Did you know cows should rest about 12 hours a day, and activity on the dairy that

12

impedes their ability to achieve this has been shown to have a negative impact on production? In fact, there’s research supporting this notion (to the right) you will find interesting. Disrupting a cow’s ability to rest does not always happen in obvious ways. Overcrowding, heat stress, and extended time in lock ups or the holding pen can by themselves have a significant impact. But disruptions are cumulative, meaning they add up throughout the day creating an environment that makes it difficult for cows to rest completely and subsequently perform at their peak.

Savvy producers are increasingly looking for ways to minimize human interaction and interference in their cow’s natural behavior. By doing so cows have the best chance of performing at an elite level. Robots allow cows to be milked when they choose, robotic feed pushers ensure cows have consistent access to feed, and activity monitors reduce the need for fresh pen lock ups and synchronization shots. While you are familiar with these technologies, another which can significantly decrease disruption to cows is using

Enhancing producer profitability through integrated services.

milk-based diagnostics, such as pregnancy testing. A growing motivation to move to milk pregnancy testing is the benefits to the cow, which influence her ability to achieve maximum production. Every time we remove a trip through the pen to find cows, we positively impact the entire pen. Not only are the needed cows not sorted, marked, or handled; but their pen mates are no longer collateral damage. It is difficult and probably impossible to calculate the exact cost any single disruption has on a cow’s production. But is it necessary to know? In the pursuit of operating your dairy at an elite level, why ignore the chance to contribute to a cow’s opportunity to perform a key function impacting production… rest. Today’s dairies run on schedules and routines with tasks needing to be accomplished systematically to ensure the entire operation runs efficiently. Opportunities that allow one of the biggest expenses (labor) and biggest sources of revenue (milk production) to benefit simultaneously are rare and too good to pass up.

Consider what steps you have taken to provide an environment for your cows that not only provides maximum comfort but also minimizes disturbances. Milkbased diagnostics are just one more way CentralStar can enhance your profitability, but don’t take my word for it - ask the 5 million cows pregnancy tested last year, no wait - they are resting, and didn’t even know it happened.

t is a costly day when open cows are discovered in the dry pen; over $400 per cow in feed alone. Finding these cows has never been easier or less invasive.

If you are using palpation or ultrasound, the disruption is not just yours, but hers as well. Rather than resting and producing more milk, cows are spending unnecessary time in headlocks, along with you and your veterinarian. Save your time and hers by choosing the Milk Pregnancy Test for pregnancy confirmation.

Research represented in the graph below, shows the impact reduced resting time has on production. One hour of lost resting time leads to approximately 3.5 lbs (1.7kg) less milk/day. Allowing cows opportunities to remain undisturbed can have significant returns.

Confirming pregnancy before dry off is a common practice to save money that’s wasted on feeding open cows in the dry pen. Choosing to use the milk pregnancy test on DHI test day instead of palpation or ultrasound eliminates the inconvenience associated with confirming pregnancies.

Eliminate the barriers

and speed up your herd’s genetic performance

I

f you have ever traveled Interstate 80/90 you know it’s riddled with toll booths that slow you down, prolonging arrival at your destination. That is unless you have an “I-Pass” which removes the barriers and lets you cruise quickly through. If you think the concept of an I-Pass is not relevant to your dairy, think again. Staying on course with your goals is the name of the game, and the genetics you use in your herd are a driving force. Even if you have been committed to using good genetics, a new program introduced by Select Sires can move you into the fast lane.

cows. Time and again, dairy producers who believe in the value of genetics see the benefits in countless ways. “We’ve always used Select Sires genetics because they are the best,” shared Molly Pluger, Yonkman Dairy, in McBain, Mich.

It’s the genetics that have carried us through. When cows are well built, they live longer and are more profitable and that longevity transcends from generation to generation.

NxGEN is a membership-based program that allows dairy producers to use the industry’s most valuable genetics 6-12 months earlier than anyone else. By having this unprecedented early access, dairies can minimize the herd’s generation interval, while maximizing genetic gain. The directorder and direct-ship process for NxGEN delivers the highest caliber genetics at the farm within one week. “NxGEN was designed for producers that want to drive genetic performance. The lineup includes sires that meet the needs of every dairy producer, no matter the management environment or selection criteria,” said Jordan Siemers, Select Sires Holstein Sire Analyst. “This program is unlike anything previously offered by Select Sires. Not only do dairy producers have the opportunity to purchase the highest-caliber sires earlier, but the ordering and shipment process puts these genetics on doorsteps within one week.”

At Yonkman Dairy, cows bred with top-end genetics are significantly outperforming their pen mates in several areas. “Productive Life (PL) is one of the traits we focus on, it shows,” shared Jess. - Molly Pluger, Yonkman Dairy and “There is a 2.80 difference between the top 25% of the herd, and the bottom 25% for “It’s the genetics that have carried us this trait. What that really means is cows in through – good times and bad. When cows the top 25% of the herd stay in the herd 2.8 are well built, they live longer and are more profitable and that longevity transcends from generation to generation.” Always striving for more, Yonkman Dairy recently enrolled in the NxGEN program. “We want to use the very best bulls and this program gives us early access to the best in the industry – that’s why we signed up,” said Molly. Investing in the best genetics can provide massive returns, perhaps some of the biggest on a dairy. CentralStar Genetic Consultants work with thousands of dairies across the Midwest and have plenty of evidence that investing in genetics pays off.

Using the breed-leading genetics early gives herds a leg up in developing higher producing, healthier, more profitable 14

“We routinely see increased production, fertility, and longer lived, healthier cows, in herds that have prioritized genetic selection over the years,” said Jess Jakubik, CentralStar Genetic Consultant and Team Leader. “These gains are in part because they use the best sires available for the traits the farm is interested in. NxGEN is the next step for these herds.”

months longer, extending their contribution to the bulk tank and the dairy’s bottom line.”

CAPTURE GENETIC TRENDS

Similarly, CentralStar Genetic Consultant, Cole Mark has seen firsthand the difference using top-end genetics can make in herds. Luckwaldt Agriculture Inc., owned by Dan and Mary Luckwaldt in Woodville, Wis. have prioritized buying top genetics for years, because they have proof it is a leading driver of profitability on their 1,300 cowherd. “Each year we evaluate numerous metrics to understand how genetics are expressed in the Luckwaldt herd,” shared Cole. “We see a staggering difference between the top and bottom quartiles for milk production, as well as other traits. For milk production, the top 25% put an additional 12 pounds of milk/cow/day in the bulk tank in their first lactation, and another nine pounds for second and greater lactations. All in all, that adds up to over 9,000 more pounds of milk in the lifetime of a cow. That’s a payoff worth investing in.” You might think buying the best genetics available will get you where you want to be, but it’s more than that. “It’s important that you have a plan for the genetics you use in your herd,” said Brian Kelroy, CentralStar Genetic Consultant and Team Leader. “Building a plan is something we do every day for dairies of all sizes. Through the process we align genetic selection to herd goals; rank animals on genetic merit and provide mating recommendations to create the correct number of genetically superior replacements from the best animals in the herd. Adding NxGEN to the plan accelerates the process and increases profitability in the herd for generations to come.”

ReproStar Award Winners

The CentralStar ReproStar Awards were created in 2019 to recognize dairy producers for their accomplishments with reproductive proficiency. Nominations were accepted from CentralStar team members for dairies throughout Wisconsin, Indiana and Michigan. Herds were nominated for either heifer or cow performance and then categorized by herd size, and if the breeding is performed by CentralStar staff or managed in-house. A panel of three judges reviewed each dairy’s data, considering multiple factors that affect pregnancy rates. According to our judges, the herds recognized here excel in pregnancy rates, conception rates, submission rates and average days open. It is this kind of breeding efficiency that helps to keep their average days in milk low, milk production optimum and allow them to make use of the best genetics available. The award winners have different approaches to achieving high reproductive efficiency, but three themes stood out as consistent contributors. • Teamwork. Everyone on and off the dairy must do their part. • Compliance. Don’t deviate - follow protocols precisely. • Genetics. Select genetics that focus on fertility and health traits. While their numbers reflect success, it’s the process each farm takes to get there that proves most interesting. Read what the award winners and their CentralStar team members have to share about the journey.

Deluur Future

Marlette, Mich. To achieve a 47% pregnancy rate, owner Hendrick Eggink said, “It boils down to dedication, compliance, consistency and good facilities. Consistency is important in every area.” Ninety-eight percent of the breeding at Deluur Future is based on observation. In an effort to tighten up the breeding window and ensure heifers are calving at 22 months of age, prostaglandin shots were added to the program. Heifers receive Lutalyse® at 359 days of age, with a second shot given to any heifer that does not show heat within 14 days. Rick Gilbert, CentralStar A.I. Specialist, walks 400 heifers daily to identify heats and breed. Pregnancy checks are performed by palpation at 32-42 days, with verification between 60-80 days. Animals over 420 days that are not pregnant are marked do-not-breed (DNB). “These are some of the nicest heifers we see,” said Dr. Lauren Lauwers, Thumb Veterinary Services. “They are all well-grown and uniform in size.” Hendrick adds, “Rick is checking the heifers closely and not over-looking any of them. He just gets it done.” Good nutrition is a key component of the program. Along with a balanced ration, the nutritionist walks the pens weekly to check feed and body condition score. With an emphasis on longevity, Hendrick said, “About five years ago we changed our selection criteria to include Dairy Wellness Profit Dollars (DWP$) because it involves more health traits.” Holstein heifers are bred once with sexed semen, and conventional semen is used on all subsequent services. Sexed semen is used for first and second service on Jersey heifers, followed by beef semen. “This farm, managed by Jason Franklin, is a well-oiled machine with an impressive amount of dedication by everyone,” shared Dr. Lauwers. “Rick is very dedicated and involved in the entire process. The facilities are excellent, providing a low stress environment for the animals, which shows in how well-grown and uniform they are as a group and in the pregnancy results.”

Sun Prairie, Wis.

Jeddo, Mich.

When asked what the biggest contributing factors to a 38% pregnancy rate are, Stuart Meier, Rademacher-Meier Dairy coowner started with “genetics and a long history of A.I. breeding. Our technician is a large part of the reason for sure. His ability to read the cows, and the attention to detail he puts into his daily walk through is a big part of it.”

“It’s a coordinated effort in every area to reach this reproductive level,” said Jim Reid, owner of Reid Dairy Farm. “Our program is automatic to us, but relies on consistency, compliance and getting it done every day to be successful.”

Working with the herd for the past five years, CentralStar A.I. Specialist, Mohammed Touir heads up the reproduction program, which includes daily observation combined with OvSynch. The first pregnancy check is performed at 32 days, and open cows are re-enrolled in OvSynch. If a cow is still open at 145 days a CIDR® is implanted. As conception and pregnancy increased, the dairy experienced an abundance of heifers and called on the CentralStar team to review the metrics and re-evaluate the breeding strategy. To best manage heifer inventory levels, genetically superior animals are bred with sexed semen, while the bottom 20% are bred with beef semen. “We want to keep the ball rolling by using the best bulls in the herd we can,” said Stuart. “Starting the day the calf hits the ground, consistent care at every stage is equally important,” said Stuart. “Cows are creatures of habit. From feeding to milking times, we stay consistent with how and when we do it. Cow comfort is also a priority. Sometimes dry cows are overlooked but taking care of them is huge. We even run fans and sprinklers for the dry cows, and since we started doing that it has helped us push to a higher number (pregnancy rate).” “The nutritionist keeps an eye on the herd and looks for outlying issues,” said Stuart. “Our vet uses our dairy herd management records and does the same. Brian (Kelroy, CentralStar Team Leader) puts his eyeball on things as well. Having a strong staff around us is crucial. I don’t know how we would get it done without one.”

The reproduction program at Reid Dairy combines the insights of an electronic herd monitoring system, with OvSynch. At 60 days fresh, cows can be bred based on observation, with the bulk of breedings occurring through OvSynch. First lactation cows are marked DNB at 250 days in milk (DIM), or the fifth service, while the cut-off for second and greater lactation animals is 200 DIM or fourth service. Two pregnancy checks are performed by ultrasound at 30 days and again at dry off. “Laura (Small, Herdsperson) is the key person here who keeps track of it all,” said Jim. “She is a very detail minded person, and that is a key driver with the improvements we’ve seen.” “PCDART makes it easy to know who gets shots when,” said Laura. “It manages the whole timing of the program.” Jeff Reid added, “it’s a handy tool for managing a lot of aspects of the farm. It definitely makes our jobs easier.” Reid Dairy credits changes in the fresh cow program and moving from three-times-a-day milking to two-times-a-day for contributing to improved reproductive results. “Laura keeps a close eye on animals in these pens and makes sure they are clicking along before joining the herd,” said Jim. Improved conception resulted in too many heifers, so the herd recently began using sexed < 500 Cows semen and beef semen based on genetic rank of animals in the Pregnancy Rate herd. “We rely on Dave (Lindberg, Days Open CentralStar Area Sales Manager) Voluntary Waiting Period and Malissa (Reed, CentralStar Genetic Consultant) for bull Conception - 1st Lactation selection. “It is not one component by itself – it’s teamwork,” said Herdsman, Mark Winters, regarding the reproductive levels Latham Dairy has achieved. “Everyone on the dairy has to do their part in the big puzzle for it all to work. The feeder, forage harvesting team, hoof trimmer, nutritionist and vet all play a big role. I can keep the best records and adhere to a synch program but, if someone else hasn’t done their part of taking care of the cows it will affect their fertility and ability to get pregnant.”

“Lots of little things go into repro being successful,” said Aaron Gasper, owner of Lew-Max, LLC. “Jorge (Delarosa, Herdsman) is the main driver here. He’s in the trenches making sure everything gets done. From shot compliance to cows coming through transition successfully, Jorge makes sure it all gets done.”

A two shot PreSynch program and OvSynch 56, combined with a pedometer system and A.I. technician service is the base of the reproduction program. “OvSynch 56 is one of the earlier models developed where GnRH is given about 16 hours before insemination,” said Mark. “We’ve been using this protocol for 10 plus years and have been having good results.” The initial pregnancy check is performed between 32-39 days. The re-synch strategy is used on cows one week before herd check, in an effort to re-inseminate open cows sooner. Cows with unusual problems are enrolled in a CIDR-Synch program to get them into a normal estrus cycle. “Consistency and labor management are reasons why we rely on Dave (Holzinger, CentralStar A.I. Specialist),” stated Mark. “We could do it in-house, but on any given day there are too many factors to manage that would interfere with the results.” Sexed, conventional and beef semen are used in the herd, with a focus on fertility traits for the past ten years. “I believe in genomics and take all the information into consideration, including haplotypes. We really have tried to make sure cows are bred to have the best chance possible at reproduction,” said 501 - 1,500 Cows Mark. “Cows are what pay the bills and we make sure they get taken care of. Many factors go into having healthy, productive cows that get pregnant when they are supposed to. It takes teamwork,” said Mark.

Three pregnancy checks are performed at 30, 70 and 150-160 days. The blood pregnancy test is used most often, while the milk pregnancy test is used every other month. “We try to line up herd health and DHI test day every other month to give Jorge a break,” said Aaron. Cows that are not confirmed pregnant are enrolled in OvSynch. Lew-Max relies on CentralStar to provide genetic selection and mating recommendations for the herd. “We leave picking the bulls to Moss (McCauley, CentralStar Genetic Consultant). “We use top end bulls with good SCR (Sire Conception Rate) and positive DPR (Daughter Pregnancy Rate), and we use young sires more than proven bulls.” Monthly, Julie Ainsworth, CentralStar, Coordinator, Dairy Production Analysis (DPA), analyzes the herd’s DHI data and provides a graphic report of key indicators to the dairy. “It’s amazing the insights the report provides, without Julie physically being on the farm,” shared Aaron.

The Lew-Max herd uses a combination of synchronization and the Afimilk pedometer system to manage the reproduction program. Recently the pedometer system began providing real-time alerts, which has helped the dairy tighten the breeding window. First service breedings are performed following the G6G protocol, with subsequent breedings occurring as a result of alerts from the pedometer system.

For Aaron, the continued improvements in the reproduction program boil down to experience. “The preg rates keep getting better because we are better managers and know more about the cows today than we did 20 years ago,” said Aaron.

Consistency and a long-term focus on DPR are among key factors Luckwaldt Agriculture credits for their reproduction results. “This farm is really precise with their breeding protocols, cow comfort and everything they do,” shared Tom Mahoney, CentralStar A.I. Specialist. “Because of that attention to detail they’ve been at these levels for the past 4-5 years.”

“A lot of factors play into a good repro program, starting with a team that make sure compliance of the program is followed,” shared Dean Meinholz, Herdsman at Blue Star Dairy Farms. “We don’t skip doing anything – even when we are short staffed. We have some really good, experienced breeders that have really great techniques that lead to good conception rates and help them settle cows.”

Dairy

The dairy relies on Double OvSynch with a double dose of prostaglandin at the last injection. Herdsman Patrick Kusilek and Assistant Herdsman Derek Fenner walk the pens and chalk cows each morning, identifying those that need to be bred. Pregnancy confirmation is performed at 32 and 66 days by ultrasound, with late lactation confirmation by palpation at 200 days. Open cows that have a CL are given Lutalyse. Cystic cows are administered GnRH and a CIDR. “We’re looking to get cows pregnant as fast as we can given the restriction of our voluntary waiting period (VWP),” said Patrick. The herd’s DNB protocol is highly dependent on milk production. “Two hundred days is usually when we’ll stop breeding a cow,” said Patrick. “However, if it’s a first lactation cow that is milking like gangbusters, we’ll give her more time because her persistency is good.” A high degree of attention is given to fresh cow protocols, ensuring cows come through the transition program successfully. Patrick and Derek monitor these groups daily, reviewing milk weights in the post-fresh group to ensure they are climbing in production as expected. “Each year we evaluate numerous metrics to understand how genetics are expressed in the Luckwaldt herd,” shared Cole 501 - 1,500 Cows Mark, CentralStar Genetic Honorable Mention Consultant. “We intentionally Pregnancy Rate 37% select for DPR and it has played a factor in their increasing Days Open 94 pregnancy rates.” Voluntary Waiting Period

The program for the multiple site, 2,000 cow herd includes a combination of PreSynch, OvSynch and a pedometer system. All cows go through the first sequence of shots for the first breeding. After that, cows that are identified in heat with the pedometer system are allowed to be bred. Pregnancy verification begins at 31 days with ultrasound. One week prior to pregnancy check, cows receive GnRH in the event they are open and in the right stage, then they can be re-enrolled in OvSynch. Non-cycling cows are also implanted with a CIDR. Cows confirmed pregnant are verified again at 66 and 185 days. Cows are marked DNB at 250 days, or earlier depending on production to save on synchronization costs. The farm’s genetic program incorporates genomic tests with mating recommendations. More recently, genetic selection has emphasized Productive Life and other health traits through DWP$, which Dean feels is making a positive impact on the herd’s reproduction program. “CentralStar has been pretty integral as far as selecting bulls that work in our mating program and have good conception here,” said Dean. Genomic test results determine which animals to breed with sexed semen, and which ones to breed to beef. “Genomic testing helps us tie everything together,” said Dean. “It helps us make > 1,500 Cows sure we are breeding the highest Pregnancy Rate 34% genomic animals to sexed Days Open 102 semen, which helps us dial in to get the right pregnancies to get Voluntary Waiting Period 72 the right number of live heifer Conception - 1st Lactation 53% calves each month, which helps Conception - 2nd Lactation 53% with herd inventory.” Conception - 3rd+ Lactation

Seeing is believing Pride View Dairy

Van Vliet Dairy

Chad, Heath, Luke Boelter Randolph, Wis.

Jan Van Vliet Deckerville, Mich.

In the five years since Pride View installed CowManager, their cow pregnancy rate increased from 22% with a 60% submission rate to 34% with a 75% submission rate. “The numbers tell a lot by themselves,” said Chad. “It has definitely improved our breeding, there’s no doubt about that.” The CowManager health module has proven beneficial on many dairies, and Pride View is no exception. “We definitely catch sick cows quicker,” said Heath. “When we move them out of the post-fresh pen into larger groups, you can watch their rumination to see how they’re doing. So, we’re a little faster at early identification.” By using CowManager to get cows pregnant at the appropriate time and monitoring their health in a more efficient fashion, Pride View Dairy has been able to freshen in 319 more cows per year without even increasing herd size. They’ve also seen significant decreases in cow death, ketosis, metritis, and retained placenta. In turn, all this has made it possible for Back Row: Luke Boelter, Eric Gudex, Brian Kelroy, Scott the farm to obtain Hecker, Heath Boelter; Front Row: Victor Lopez, Andrea income from selling Gruetzmacher, Chad Boelter. more cows. 22

A little over 12 months ago, Jan Van Vliet tried CowManager through the Seeing is Believing trial. Initially putting CowManager tags in 50 cows, Jan quickly saw the benefits and bought it right away. “CowManager lets us be more proactive and head off problems before cows get really sick,” said Jan. “When we receive an alert that a cow is not “acting” normally we drench her right away. Previously we would not have seen cows like this begin to struggle because there are no outward signs. With CowManager it’s identified early, and we are able to fight off illness and keep them producing. You can find sick cows without CowManager, but it’s not as easy, and it’s usually too late. Our recovery rate from sickness is higher, and our culling rate is down because of CowManager. CowManager makes us more efficient and saves us time. It has reduced our labor needs for monitoring fresh cows, which allows us to do other things on the farm. We believe CowManager has already paid for itself. We only wish we had installed it sooner.”

Diagnostic AND

Lab Services Conveniently test for production, disease and health related traits. A1/A2 (beta-casein)

• A2 milk is potentially more digestible than milk containing A1 betacasein, which is metabolized differently during digestion. • Identifies the genotype of the beta-casein protein. • Test individual whole blood, tissue or milk samples.

Bovine Leukosis (BLV)

• Viral disease transmitted by infected body fluids. Negatively impacts production, longevity, and cull value. • Test individual cows by milk or blood, or 40 select cows to efficiently determine herd prevalence. • Screen cows by ELISA then submit samples from BLV-positive cows for PCR testing. • PCR test can identify infected cows that have become “Super Shedders,” causing the most risk to uninfected herdmates and young stock.

Bovine Neospora

• Protozoan disease associated with dogs, widely implicated in abortion outbreaks. • Test individuals or groups of aborting and non-aborting cattle to associate Neospora with abortions.

Bovine Viral Diarrhea (BVD)

• Viral disease transmitted by aerosols. Reduces reproductive performance by decreasing conception and inducing abortion. • Persistently Infected (PI) calves developed in-utero lead to frequent death, poor performance, ongoing reinfection. • Test ear notch or serum from calves to identify PI. Test individual or pooled milk from cows to efficiently clear adult herd of PI suspicion. • Utilize ELISA (antigen) or PCR analyses and strategic pooling to reduce testing costs.

Johne’s

• Bacterial disease transmitted by infected manure. Causes decreased milk production, chronic diarrhea, and death. • Test cattle, goats and sheep by milk, blood or fecal samples at dry off or in early lactation. • Select ELISA (antibody) or PCR (organism) detection. Individual cow or pooled analysis. • Johne’s management report available for herds enrolled in DHI.

CentralStar has you surrounded with more field

support than any other similar organization in your neighborhood. We pride ourselves on helping your dairy optimize the natural synergies that exist when we coordinate genetic selection, reproductive programs, herd health and dairy production. Even when the individual pieces on your dairy are operating at top performance, opportunities for optimizing total outcomes exist. CentralStar consultants work across key areas, facilitating integration to enhance your profitability. Our team of consultants have the knowledge, experience, and functional expertise to help you benefit from the synergies that exist. Backed by a network of professionals across the United States, CentralStar consultants focus on your herd’s challenges, opportunities and goals.

“We get a report after every (DHI) test day. Julie (Ainsworth) keeps track of startup milk, persistence and other areas, providing a snapshot of what’s going on in the herd. It’s amazing what she picks up from the data, without even being on the farm. Sometimes the report points to a trend we aren’t aware of yet, and other times it’s an area we are already focusing on. The real value of the information is that it’s another set of eyes on the operation, along with our vet and nutritionist.” Aaron Gasper Lew-Max, LLC, Belding, Mich.

WHAT WE DO FOR YOU

Reproduction monitoring Track trends and troubleshoot areas impacting fertility. Provide guidance for synchronization protocols, insemination techniques, and aspects surrounding reproduction. Genetic planning & inventory management Based on your milk market and future plans, develop mating recommendations to meet inventory needs and to achieve genetic goals. Strategic use of sexed, conventional and beef semen creates the right amount of pregnancies to fulfill your needs, while potentially creating new revenue streams. Production analysis Routine and comprehensive review of milk quality and production factors. Metrics for peak milk and persistency, SCC, conception, pregnancy rates and others are among the key performance indicators assessed and tracked against goals. Herd health surveillance Challenges with milk quality, production and reproduction often require next step surveillance through diagnostic testing programs. Along with individual animal testing, the implementation of surveillance programs for mastitis, BLV, BVD, Johne’s and other diseases can easily be implemented on farm.

CentralStar Cooperative

“When we really started to get good conception numbers and preg rates, we had an overabundance of heifers. We asked Brian (Kelroy) to help us look at the metrics to re-evaluate our breeding program for using beef semen on the bottom-end and sexed semen on our best cows to produce replacement heifers. Brian helps us evaluate and monitor our inventory numbers and also the quality of sires used.”

Key Performance Indicators (KPI) are a great way to assess how your herd is performing compared to other CentralStar DHI herds. The values shown here encompass the entire breadth of herds that meet the criteria described in “The Fine Print” on page 3. The KPI’s here represent a snapshot of where the entire CentralStar DHI herd is and should be used as such.

Key Performance

While interesting to see what is achievable and what it takes to rank in the top 10%, a more valuable approach is to generate KPI comparisons for your dairy using important factors, such as geography, herd size and breed, before any conclusions are made.

Solutions for mycotoxins need to provide security, economy, and convenience. Chemical strategies (binders) have limits based on their chemical properties. The unique L-form properties of Select DTX™ are formulated to control mold-derived feed challenges and provide immune support to cattle. It is not a binder. Rather, it initiates and optimizes an absorptive cell regulatory mechanism in the host animal’s intestinal epithelium. On farm dairy trials support the efficacy of using DTX in the face of multiple mycotoxin exposures. Four herds that all had unresolved problems associated with chronic exposure to several mycotoxins were recently evaluated for pregnancy rates, abortion rates and heat detection. In the farms evaluated, various approaches with binders had been tried with only partial success when used at 2-3 times suggested feeding rates. By contrast, in each case DTX was used at standard dosing rates. The data points to the effectiveness of DTX as a feed challenge control additive.

Pregnancy Rates Each of the Figure 1. Pregnancy Rate Improvements with Select DTX™ herds was at Various Farms showing significant 68 reproductive Dairy #1 failures. 17.6 Dairy #2 Changes in pregnancy rates 31.3 Dairy #3 are shown; 13.3 Dairy #4 however, other metrics, such 0 20 40 60 80 as first service PREGNANCY RATE (% increase) conception and improved estrus expression follow similar patterns.

DTX was chosen to mitigate these challenges. Figure 1 shows the improvements in pregnancy rates within 60-90 days of dosing, even for the herd with citrinin, attesting to the broad spectrum protection afforded by this biological approach to mycotoxin control.

SCS

Somatic Cell Score is the direct measure of somatic cells in milk samples. Lower values are preferred.

PROTIP Breeding replacement heifers with genetic potential for high production, high pregnancy rates and high disease resistance is key to herd profitability.

• An economic analysis of records from five large herds in Idaho, South Dakota and Wisconsin demonstrated that every extra one-point increase in DWP$ in replacement heifers returned $1.84 of lifetime profit during their milking careers. • Heifers that ranked in the top quartile for DWP$ generated $811 more lifetime profit than heifers in the lowest quartile. • Using AI sires with high DWP$, like those available through Select Sires NxGEN program, is vital for breeding high DWP$ replacement heifers. Adequate transfer of maternal immunoglobulins is associated with health advantages by reducing pre- and postweaning mortality due to infectious disease and increasing daily gain, feed efficiency, fertility, and milk production in first and second lactation. Achieving adequate transfer of maternal immunoglobulins (IgG) occurs with successful passive transfer, which is when enough antibodies from quality maternal colostrum or colostrum replacer are absorbed into the calf’s bloodstream. Quality, timing and quantity are three key factors when feeding colostrum. •

Calves should receive 150 to 200 grams IgG in the first meal.

Larger breed calves should receive four quarts colostrum, and smaller breeds three quarts, within 1-2 hours of birth.

The calf’s ability to transfer immunoglobulins from the digestive tract to the bloodstream reduces drastically in mere hours.

Colostrum with mastitis, blood, bedding, manure, or from Johne’s-positive cows should not be fed. All milk contains some bacteria, but dangerous levels can grow rapidly in colostrum from dirty udders or unsanitary equipment.

If the antibody level in the colostrum has been tested with a Brix refractometer and is found to be inadequate, adding a colostrum supplement/replacer can improve antibody supply.

When high quality colostrum is not available, use a commercial colostrum replacer. Use of a colostrum replacer guarantees the same amount of IgG is fed to each calf every time, proving an effective and convenient method of providing passive immunity to calves.

A healthy calf will produce milk sooner due to increased average daily gain and an earlier age at first calving. Research shows heifers that receive four quarts of quality colostrum produce 11% more milk in the first lactation than those fed two quarts. The most expensive part of raising cattle is from weaning to parturition, so the faster they are bred and enter the milking herd, the faster you can start to see a profit from her.

UDL BP-100 ®

A versatile fly control that is safe for humans and livestock. Kills flies with extremely low risk of resistance. Application will leave a residue to control flies for up to seven days. UM3703 - UDL BP-100 1gal $68.50 UM3706 - UDL BP-100 55gal $2,000.00

Research shows that cows under 90 days in milk lose 6.4 pounds per day following induced infection. Left untreated, parasites can negatively impact the immune system, suppress appetite and feed intake, decrease milk production and lower conception rates.

Neporex®

Controls stable flies and mosquitoes. Granular formulation larvicide, suitable for scattering, or dissolving for pouring and spraying. Can be used as a spot treatment where larvae are found developing. NOT allowed for application directly to livestock, feed or water for consumption, as residues may occur. Apply to calf hutches, slatted floors, cattle pens and spillage areas. AC2837 - Neporex 11lb

A University of Wisconsin study found that cows less than 90 days in milk lost 6.4 pounds per day following induced infection.

The higher the production potential is for an animal and the closer it is to achieving it, the greater the damage parasites inflict. Thus it takes fewer parasites to induce losses in high producing cows than it does in lower producing cows.

A study of first lactation heifers treated with IVOMEC EPRINEX® showed calving to conception took 12.9 fewer days, than those not treated. Also, 19.9% more first-calf heifers were pregnant after first service.

For effective parasite control, use a combination approach including whole-herd (cows and heifers) deworming (cows and young stock); and spring/early summer worming for cows and heifers entering the milking herd (just prior to or at time of freshening).
