Yield Monitoring for Your Dairy

D

uring harvest you rely on yield monitoring to ensure maximum production without wasting inputs. So, why not use yield monitoring in your dairy herd?

It’s available. In fact, it has been around a long, long time. Are you using it? If you are, can you honestly say you are maximizing its potential to ensure you aren’t wasting money? Maybe you can’t even answer those questions because as the saying goes, “we don’t know what we don’t know.” If you aren’t yet clear what yield monitoring you have easy access to for your dairy, it is DHI and the CentralStar consulting team. Now, don’t quit reading because you have a perception of what DHI is and can do for you. Granted, in its raw form, DHI data doesn’t give you “sexy” heat maps and dashboards, but combined with the expert analysis of CentralStar consultants, it delivers information that allows you to minimize rising input costs, including labor, while maximizing outputs. Today’s environment of increasing input costs, rising inflation and lack of labor are real challenges our entire industry is facing, but I probably didn’t need to remind you of that. Like an agronomist, CentralStar consultants can utilize data to help you manage your herd more precisely, ultimately improving efficiency and profitability. If you are currently using DHI data, are you really maximizing management to minimize input costs, and expand production? Or is it more about routine and tradition that helps you feel good about ____ (fill in the blank)?

Real solutions often are revealed through a deep dive and analytics which identify opportunities that optimize outcomes. That’s where the CentralStar team can help. We have a longstanding history of partnering with dairies to optimize the natural synergies that exist between genetic selection, reproductive programs, herd health, and dairy production. Our team has the knowledge, experience, and practical expertise to help you benefit from synergies that exist. On the pages of The Big Book, you will find highlights of products, programs and services that can help you optimize herd management decisions to maximize yields. Topics like, building a better cow for the future, raising the bar on mastitis detection and management, and much, much more, show the value partnering with CentralStar can provide. And, of course, your local CentralStar team members are just a call or text away, so reach out when you have questions or are ready to start. Yield monitors give you the opportunity for precise application of expensive inputs. DHI can do the same for your dairy herd. As we face high commodity prices this year, leverage the precision DHI and CentralStar consultants can provide to help ensure you are maximizing production, without losing control of input costs. Pioneer Award 2021

R

andy Nigh was selected as the 2021 Pioneer Award recipient. Randy served on the East Central-Select Sires board of directors for a total of 32 years between 1980 – 2019. During his tenure he served as president for seven years and vice president for two. Additionally, Randy served as a director on the Select Sires board and was a member of the Holstein Sire committee. Randy has been actively involved in his community and dairy industry including roles with National Holstein Association, Vernon County Holstein, Township, and Viroqua FFA. A family operation, Randy, and brother Robert own Lirr Farm. Nephew, Ryan Nigh and his wife Kelsey work with the dairy, while nephew Brady Nigh assists with the crops. Located in Viroqua, Wisconsin, Lirr Farm is a 1,000-acre dairy, beef and cash crop farm. In the genetics world Lirr Farm is known for being the breeder of 7HO9264 Lirr Drew DEMPSEY, a Select Sires Showcase™ Selections sire. DEMPSEY sired daughters that breeders loved, earning global recognition for making champions. At the time of his death in 2019, DEMPSEY had sired more than 38,700 daughters worldwide with lifetime total sales of more than 593,452 units of semen, ranking him as the second highest lifetime sales Showcase Selections sire. The farms’ passion for registered Holsteins runs deep. To date, Lirr Farm has earned the Holstein Association’s Progressive Breeder Award for 20 years and the Progressive Genetics Award for 30.

The CentralStar Pioneer Award was established in 1977 to recognize individuals who, through unselfish and dedicated service as leaders, have provided the Cooperative and its members greater prosperity today and a more secure tomorrow.

We recently talked with Randy about his experiences with the Cooperative and here’s what he had to share. Why did you get involved in the Cooperative? I was keen on genetics to make my herd as genetically superior as possible through sire selection. I originally worked with Tri-State Breeders but identified and was using a few Select Sires bulls early on. At the time East Central received marketing rights for Select Sires in my county, I was encouraged to apply for a position on the board, and I was successfully elected. Now with Accelerated Genetics and Select Sires as one company you could say I’ve been full circle with this organization. What contributions as a board member did you make that brought value to customers and members? During my time on the board, we added diversified products, tailchalk service, reproduction analysis and implemented a variety of technologies, with the mating program and in the office, to improve efficiencies. Regarding diversified products, we added them because of economics. We had a built-in delivery system with people already going to farms, and we felt the products would be beneficial to our members. I was on the board at the time NorthStar and East Central merged. Adding the services NorthStar already had in place, like DHI and diagnostic testing, allowed us to bring more value to members. These, along with the research and development NorthStar was already doing was something we wanted our members to be a part of. Why is it important to be involved in the Cooperative? The cooperative principle is unique where you have the opportunity for involvement and share in the rewards that are generated. I believe the cooperative structure still works today. While it can be a bit cumbersome at times, it forces the organization to be deliberate in their decisions. Cooperatives are most successful when they have a diverse group on the board. Everyone has their own personal experiences that shape their thoughts and beliefs. When you mesh all those experiences together it creates an opportunity for success.

SUBCLINICAL HYPOCALCEMIA BREWS BELOW THE SURFACE.

While clinical hypocalcemia, or “milk fever,” is the more obvious threat to freshening cows, it’s the silent subclinical hypocalcemia that can be more destructive. More common and harder to detect, it causes a drop in calcium levels that can creep up in the form of suppressed immune health and decreased productivity. Learn more at StartwithBovikalc.com.

T

oday’s dairy herds are optimizing the value of calves and breeding more dairy cows to beef sires. This breeding strategy is happening around the globe and there looks to be a permanent shift in dairy herd management. With this strategy, we are seeing a steady decline in heifer inventories. Smaller heifer inventories means reduced culling and reduced turnover rates in the milking herd. This, in turn, means we will be milking more and more older cows. This is a good thing. Recent studies1 show the economic optimal culling rate is between 25 and 30 percent.

This is lower than the industry average, so less culling makes economic sense for most dairy farms. As always, the more we can shift culling from involuntary to voluntary helps increase herd profits.

mastitis resistance makes sense. PL PTAs are a valuable breeding tool but directly selecting for things like cow fertility and mastitis resistance, that are measured earlier in a cow’s lifetime, will speed up the genetic progress in these important traits.

Tighter management of dairy heifer inventories is a chance to review dairy sire selection strategies. With the need to reduce culling, it makes sense to focus sire selection on making improvement in the areas that most frequently cause cows to leave the herd. These reasons will vary from herd to herd but most usually boil down to four key reasons – failure to get pregnant, mastitis, low production or lameness.

This is the major reason behind Select Sires’ new Herd Health Profit Dollars™ index (HHP$™). HHP$ places strong emphasis on health traits, particularly mastitis resistance, using health trait PTAs from the Council of Dairy Cattle Breeding (CDCB). Mastitis resistance and Somatic Cell Score (SCS) PTAs receive a relative emphasis of 19% in the HHP$ formula compared to only 5% in both TPI and Net Merit (NM$). Another distinguishing feature of HHP$ is that it places some emphasis on udders, rewarding animals with shallower udders and uses an intermediate optimum approach for teat size and rear teat placement.

Direct selection for improvement in these areas is almost always more effective than indirect selection. Since the mid-1990s we’ve used Productive Life (PL) PTAs for selecting animals that best avoided culling. When evaluations for Daughter Pregnancy Rate (DPR) were introduced, this provided the opportunity to directly select for improved cow fertility. Gradually, we saw most industry indexes add emphasis to DPR and remove some emphasis on PL. A similar scenario exists today with effective genetic evaluations for mastitis resistance. Mastitis is a major reason cows leave the herd and shifting emphasis away from PL and directly selecting for

HHP$ includes the latest genetic information from CDCB on feed efficiency. However, it uses a slightly different approach from other industry indexes. HHP$ includes negative weights for stature and Residual Feed Intake (RFI) PTAs to genetically improve feed efficiency. It does not reward animals that are low for strength or high for dairy form.

Guide for Mycotoxins in Dairy

F

rom planting to harvest the scuttlebutt we’ve gotten on mycotoxin issues this year has been, “… not seeing too much this summer,” “… better than last by far,” and “… not getting so many positive toxin reports this season.” Well, we’ve reached the end of the 2021 crop season and the data are now in. Let’s see if these reports were accurate. • You can’t predict mycotoxins in feedstuffs by eye! Much of the 2021 corn and soy crops look really good. But, mycotoxins, and sometimes even the molds that produce them, are found in abundance hidden from our view. Don’t rely on visual cues to determine if mycotoxins are a risk this year. Good testing is the only way to know for sure. • Averages for Michigan, Indiana and Wisconsin. For the period (May-Sep) average values for all samples submitted were ~130 ppb for zearalenone (moderate risk), ~760 ppb DON (moderate risk), ~140 ppb T-2 toxin (moderate-high risk), and ~300 ppb fumonisins (very low risk). • High values matter. Considering the two points above, average DON was lower (May-September) this year than last. Keep in mind the reported averages are for all submitted samples, not just DON positives. But the high value for DON was dramatically higher for 2021 silage than for 2020 in the same period. While it is always nice to see some negative reports, a sample showing nearly 16,000 ppb DON means many cows in that herd were under severe DON challenge. • Mycophenolic Acid – a Problem? Mycophenolic acid appeared all too frequently. August shows 60% of all samples submitted were positive for this toxin. Generally, Mycophenolic will be accompanied by another mycotoxin, roquefortine C; however, that toxin is not being tested at this time.

• When is mycophenolic acid a risk? Observations of mycophenolic acid over the past two years suggest that dairy cattle risk is likely significant at levels of 1,000-1,500 ppb. • What feedstocks harbor mycophenolic acid? Mycophenolic acid is usually found in silage, particularly corn silage. This year, that toxin has shown up (in fairly high amounts) in TMR, HMC, shell corn, and even first cutting hay. And those samples came from Iowa, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania, showing a broad geographic range. Actlabs, a global leader in analytical lab services, provides these independent and state of the art results. In each sample, 17 mycotoxins are analyzed and reports provided to producers include estimates of the degree of severity of the concentration(s) found. Complimentary testing is available through your CentralStar team so you know for sure which environmental challenges your dairy may be facing. Mycotoxins can impact herd profitability by reducing milk production, reproduction success and overall herd health. Dairy producers and nutritionists across the U.S. rely on Select DTX and Select BioCycle Plus to resolve the negative impacts of mycotoxins. Talk to your CentralStar team to learn more.

ReproStar Award Winners

This years ReproStar award winners represent excellent efficiency in getting cows pregnant as evidenced by their pregnancy rate. In addition, in this era of keeping older cows in the herd and getting them pregnant, these herds have good conception rates for third and greater lactation cows. High efficiency also means a high percent pregnant by three cycles and no cows more than 270 days in milk are open. These six herds are the kind we are proud to work with and are excited if we contributed in some small way to their success!

Marshland Acres Durand, Wis.

A custom heifer grower, Marshland Acres’ Wisconsin facility includes over 5,000 heifers from several different farms, with about 800-900 heifers in the breeding pens at all times. The program is focused on the final product… returning heifers back to dairies ready to calve at the proper age, in the right body condition so they can be a high producing, long-lasting member of their respective herds. The reproduction program includes daily walk and tail paint with breeding performed through a team of CentralStar A.I. Specialists. “Over the last three years, we have made efficiency improvements in getting animals bred,” said Darin Klevgard, CentralStar Team Leader. “Tim Trones and Darrin Stein (A.I. Specialists) lead the efforts, but it takes help from other team members to keep it covered and get these results.” Pregnancy is confirmed weekly by ultrasound and open animals are enrolled in a variety of synchronization programs based on the Veterinarian recommendation. The goal is to have 80% of all heifers pregnant within 30 days of their Voluntary Waiting Period (VWP). Reproductive performance is analyzed monthly by Cole Mark, CentralStar Genetic Consultant, and benchmarked against other herds of similar size in the Midwest. By doing this, the farm is proactive in making improvements to the overall program. “The main contributors to reaching 40% pregnancy rate includes having excellent technicians and a team that cares,” said Mary Weiss, co-owner of Marshland Acres. “You have to have good protocols in place – ones that the dairymen want; along with a balanced ration, and a good facility for everyone to work and operate in. It’s all about the people, protocols, rations, communication and facilities to get to this level and to keep improving.” Marshland Acres has been in operation since 1995. Along with the Durand location, the Weiss family operates a second facility in Hershey, Nebraska.

Raterink Dairy Farm

Zeeland, Mich.

Environment, transition period, and consistency are the three main factors Mike Raterink, co-owner of Raterink Dairy Farm, sites for the herd’s 37% pregnancy rate. “We try to provide a quiet, non-crowded environment for cows,” said Mike. “In January 2020 we separated first lactation animals from the rest of the herd, and we are now at 100% stocking density of freestalls for each group. This has helped immensely with our reproduction and production.” Along with those factors, the dairy strives to ensure balanced rations, that there is ample space at the bunk for each animal and that synchronization compliance is spot-on. Seventy-five percent of breedings are completed based on natural heats, and 25% through a timed A.I. program. “Our goal is to breed them naturally, but when we have a cow that is anovular we use a program,” said Mike. The herd has had a lot of success with visual heat detection and Mike says his parents, Dennis and Brenda play a role in that. “Our farm is pretty animal specific,” shared Mike, “we are able to focus on individuals and that helps us get these types of results.” “One of our main metrics we watch is the percent of cows pregnant by 150 Days in Milk (DIM),” said Mike. “Our goal is 80% and we usually meet or exceed it.” The dairy also strives for a calving interval of 13 months.

Photo: Mike, Dennis, Brenda, and Kelly Raterink.

“It is a total team effort that makes the reproduction so successful at this dairy,” shared Tyler. “The veterinarian, nutritionist, Jeff (Wepner) and I all communicate routinely to help identify any issues we need to address, or ideas to implement so we can continually improve.” Coowner, Jeff Wepner added, “good nutrition, shot compliance, and fresh cow management are important as well. You want to make sure cows freshen without any problems.” It’s obvious all these efforts have paid off as the herd averages a 35% pregnancy rate with some months as high as 40%. The reproduction program begins with a 70-day VWP and all cows are enrolled in Double Ovsynch. Return heats are identified by an electronic heat detection system which was installed in July 2020. “Because of this system we are seeing heat detection rates as high as 70-80%,” shared Tyler. Bi-weekly herd health checks, including pregnancy confirmation by ultrasound at 28, 60 and 160 days, plays an important role in the herd’s reproduction results. “We work with our Vet, Amanda (Onan, United Vet Services) checking fresh cows to make sure they are cycling so we can proceed to the right synchronization program,” said Jeff. “Open cows are enrolled in Ovsynch, while cystic cows are entered into a Double Ovsynch program.”

The genetic selection for the dairy undergoes in-depth scrutiny of sires for several production, type and health traits; and then mating recommendations are provided by CentralStar Genetic Consultant, Malissa Reed. Most of the herd is bred to conventional Holstein sires, while lower-performing animals are bred to SimAngus or Wagyu beef sires to help manage inventory levels and meet the rising interest in beef sales through the farm store. Raterink Dairy Farm is owned by Dennis and Brenda Raterink, and their children, Mike and Kelly.

Teamwork, a more aggressive breeding program, tunnel ventilation and the use of electronic herd monitoring are all factors CentralStar A.I. Specialist Tyler Boyer says have contributed to improved reproduction at Wepner Farms.

With increased reproduction results, the genetic selection for the herd has changed. “We are using more sexed semen on the top-end of the herd, and more beef genetics on lower genetic value animals,” shared Tyler. “The farm raises all their own bull calves and steers so we wanted to use more beef to maximize the end profit down the road with beef, instead of dairy steers.”

Elsinger Dairy

Zahn Farms, LLC

Lomira, Wis.

Gillett, Wis.

“First of all, it’s a team effort,” stated Brenda Elsinger, co-owner of Elsinger Dairy. “The farm has to have a team of top-notch people, great feed and healthy comfortable animals. One hundred percent effort must be put in by everyone. From the team on the farm, to our veterinarians, nutritionist, and the crew from CentralStar… they are phenomenal. Everyone has to do their part, and they do.”

“The logistics of managing a breeding program through a remodel and expansion have been amazing here,” said Brian Kelroy, CentralStar Director of Consulting and Profit Strategies. “The growth has put an extreme amount of pressure on their employees to get cows bred, and they have rose to the challenge.”

The reproduction program at Elsinger Dairy includes a combination of an electronic heat detection system, synchronization and daily tailchalk and breeding by CentralStar A.I. Specialists. The program begins with a 70-day VWP and all cows are enrolled in a G6G program for the first service. Any animal that is found open through ultrasound is resynchronized. Pregnancy checks are performed by ultrasound at 33 and 60 days and again before dry off. Elsinger Dairy has a genomic testing program, and the CentralStar team references this data to provide mating recommendations and assist with inventory management. “We began genomic testing to identify our top-end animals to help with culling, and to keep our heifer numbers where they should be,” said Brenda. The dairy uses a genetic selection strategy that includes sexed dairy semen and beef genetics. The increased focus on genetic selection and breeding strategy has resulted in an older herd, with 40% of cows being in their third lactation or greater. “The activity monitoring system does a fantastic job identifying cows in heat, which is matched by Eric’s (Gudex, CentralStar A.I. Specialist) technical abilities to get cows bred,” said Brian Kelroy, CentralStar Director of Consulting and Profit Strategies. “It’s no wonder conception and pregnancy rates continue to improve in this herd.” “We are committed to being the good stewards. We want to make sure we do the best job we can for the land and the animals,” shared Brenda. “We trust the group of people we work with. That’s part of partnering with the right people to lead our farm 501 - 1,500 Cows in the right direction.”

Many factors go into good pregnancy rates, but for the dairy’s Operation Manager, Jacob Zahn there are two big reasons. “Our repro program is working because of Double Ovsynch, and having a hard working, dedicated crew in the barns. It doesn’t matter what time of day or day of the week it is, if there are cows to breed or synchronize, they get it done. I can count on our team.” According to Jacob, “The introduction of Double Ovsynch several years ago had a powerful and immediate impact. It is definitely worth the effort and resources to do it correctly.” Along with protocol compliance, the Zahn Farms team has sought out other tools and methods to maximize compliance, while improving efficiency of the reproduction program. Among the most critical aids the farm utilizes include, parlor software that identifies cows that need synchronization shots so they can be administered while they are exiting the parlor, an electronic heat detection system; as well as a needleless injection system, keeping doses consistent. Ultrasound is used by the farm team for pregnancy verification at 40 and 100 days, and at dry off. “We have been performing ultrasound in-house for the past five years, giving us not only the ability to preg check whenever we need to, but it has also been a huge cost saver,” said Jacob. Reproductive outcomes are monitored through various DairyComp reports. Additionally, monthly meetings with the CentralStar team provide analysis of the data, along with identification of areas to improve. Malone, Wis.

Strategic changes in genetic selection and breeding protocols have led to continual improvements in reproductive efficiency and longer living cows at 3-D Dairy. Now at 30% pregnancy rate, co-owner, John Diedrichs, shares what has made the difference. In 2013, the dairy began utilizing genomic test results to identify the best animals in the herd. That targeted approach, combined with selecting sires with higher daughter pregnancy rate (DPR), and Dairy Wellness Profit Dollars (DWP$) has resulted in more third and greater lactation animals in the herd. “Cows live longer now, letting me do more selective culling now than before,” said John. “We have a lot less animals coded DNB (do not breed) than ever before. Any animal with a low DWP$ value seldom makes a second lactation. I’m not choosing for them to be culled, they end up leaving the herd because of a health or repro issue.” Along with a change in genetic selection, approximately three years ago 3-D Dairy implemented using ultrasound on all animals prior to breeding to identify if a cow has ovulated. During bi-weekly herd health, the veterinarian checks to see if a cow has a CL. If a CL is identified they get a dose of prostaglandin. If not, they are enrolled in Double Ovsynch. “This change has made a big difference in our repro. It’s why we are where we are, versus where we were previously,” shared John. “When the vet checks first for a CL it saves us a lot of time and money and we get better repro results.” The reproduction program at 3-D Dairy includes daily walk, chalk and breeding by CentralStar A.I. Specialists, Kurt Barnes and Aaron McMillan. “Our technicians are doing a great job, and so are our employees. Obviously, everyone knows shot compliance is very important, and I’m fortunate to have really good employees that I trust that are doing a good job,” shared > 1,500 Cows John. 3-D Dairy is owned by John, Joe and Bill Diedrichs.

From the Experts

Make Managing Your Dairy Easier

All kinds of farms across the globe manage their herd with CowManager. Here’s what two CentralStar experts have to share about how the system benefits herds they work with. “One of the biggest benefits of CowManager are the health alerts the system provides. With this system updating alerts on the hour, every hour, it is very beneficial to dairy producers.

Scott Hecker CowManager Specialist

They can do their morning post-fresh checks, address animals that need it and not have to wait until the next day to see if animals are responding or not. They can look at recovery in real time, from anywhere.

Once a dairy producer decides to purchase the system, I take on a lot of initial responsibility. I’m here to make the whole process easy. I place the order, monitor delivery, coordinate a time for installation and am there the day of the installation. It’s that easy. Some of the benefits I’ve heard from dairies about CowManager are... •

Ease of installation - it’s seamless.

I’m getting accurate health alerts that I can confidently depend on.

It’s paying for itself faster than I thought it would.

I should have done it sooner!

“The producers that I work with love CowManager. They tell me that they’re finding cows that need attention sooner. They’re spending less time looking at cows that don’t have any issues. They can concentrate more on the cows that are having issues or any type of issues that they would have never even seen. CowManager helps a producer manage their time because they don’t need to look at every cow every day. And they know which cows to go to that need attention to take a look at. Now, especially with labor shortages, CowManager works like an actual employee, but it works 24 hours a day. Jim Neuser Reproductive Specialist

CowManager can be used on all sizes of dairies. It all wraps around the total package of the cow. If cows are not feeling well, they’re not going to breed back well. And the sooner you can get a cow back feeling better, the more milk you’re going to gain back. You will have a healthier cow that will breed back, that will get pregnant, maintain a pregnancy, have another calf and be profitable.”

BioFresh Bolus Are you using an Activity System equipped with a rumination feature in your herd? Many herds across the country that utilize activity systems are monitoring rumination alerts and providing “low rumination alert” cows with two BioFresh Boluses. The herds are following up with these cows and rumination activity is back up within 24 hours. BioFresh Bolus is formulated as a supplement for dairy cattle at the time of freshening. BioFresh Bolus is also beneficial to sick and off-feed cows, and assists in reducing Somatic Cell Count as the Southern Illinois University proved with research.

When, Why and How of PCR in Mastitis Control Programs

T

he versatility of the Mastitis PCR assay often means there is no cookie-cutter recipe for when, why and how to use it. Even still, many veterinarians incorporate PCR testing into farm-management protocols when they find they need a more convenient, faster, or more sensitive option compared to traditional methods.

Due to test sensitivity, the Mastitis PCR assay has the ability to detect even the smallest amount of DNA from an organism, which gives a broader picture of organisms on a dairy. Dr. Boge said, “While my primary focus is watching for contagious pathogens like M. bovis and Staph aureus, I use PCR to track environmental pathogens over time, which may have an impact on things like calf health.” Additionally, bedding and housing management, as well as parlor procedures are areas that can be evaluated based on environmental pathogens detected by PCR.

United Veterinary Service (UVS), Bear Creek, Wisconsin, has established mastitis management protocols that include a Mastitis PCR assay on several dairy farms. While choosing when, why and how to use PCR instead of culture includes many Results produced by mastitis PCR “PCR is a “hands-off” way to monitor factors for veterinarians, the are sometimes more information UVS team cites PCR’s sensitivity, mastitis pathogens where the producer than most dairy producers and the ability to detect intermittent veterinarians are familiar with, has little or no effort in the process.” shedding of Staph aureus and which is where Ct values come into Dr. Jeremy Boge, Bull Creek Veterinary Service speed as key reasons for when play. “We find the Ct values are very they choose it. helpful in test and cull management decisions,” said the UVS team. “We have established cut-off “Anytime a herd is struggling with milk quality issues, clinical points on each farm that state animals below a designated Ct mastitis or when contagious pathogens are found in the bulk value is an immediate cull, while animals above that threshold tank, the Mastitis PCR assay is a good option,” shared Dr. Eric should be retested. The exact Ct threshold varies by farm Duch, Dr. Cole Anderson and Dr. Valerie Baumgart at UVS. depending on the target species (M Bovis, Staph aureus) and the “Specifically, we like the assays’ ability to detect intermittent farm’s goals.“ shedding of pathogens. Staph aureus can go undetected on culture. We are more likely to find it (Staph aureus) using PCR.” Understanding the advantages of mastitis PCR is important when determining its role in reducing mastitis on dairy Convenience is one of the main reasons Dr. Jeremy Boge, Bull operations. Veterinarians, and producers alike find that the Creek Veterinary Service, Hastings, Michigan, says PCR fits into speed, convenience, and sensitivity of mastitis PCR improves farm protocols. “PCR is a “hands-off way” to monitor mastitis their ability to detect and monitor pathogens that cause pathogens where the producer has little to no effort in the mastitis. Experience shows that better detection methods can process,” said Dr. Boge. “While culture is easy to train on-farm benefit any mastitis control program. Consider the advantages staff to perform, PCR is convenient. If a farm doesn’t have of PCR when trying to improve your mastitis program. employees interested and invested in mastitis, I’ll turn to PCR.” Detecting Mycoplasma bovis quickly is another reason veterinarians turn to PCR. “Compared to traditional myco culture, I appreciate the speed of PCR to identify if that is the pathogen in the herd,” said Dr. Boge. Mycoplasma is an extremely contagious pathogen that affects an entire herd – from milking cows to newborn calves. When this pathogen is detected in a herd, the speed of PCR compared to traditional culture, which can take up to two weeks, is imperative for controlling the spread.

On Mastitis Detection and Management

T

he impact of mastitis can be staggering. With each case of mastitis, dairies can experience economic losses from treatment costs, lower production, increased labor, increased SCC and potentially removing a cow from the herd.

Considering all of this adds up to the tune of $444 per one case of clinical mastitis1 and $100 per subclinical mastitis case1, it’s time to raise the bar on mastitis detection and management. Obviously, there are many tried and true practices that combined with good management are effective at identifying and managing mastitis. So, what’s next… what are dairies doing to achieve higher levels of mastitis management? Four dairies share their insights on the benefits of incorporating mastitis polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing into their management program.

Seven Oaks Dairy, LLC Tony Liebergen, Kaukauna, Wis. 1,100 cows, 29,800M, 125,000 SCC

Why use Mastitis PCR testing? Evergreen: We had purchased a significant number of animals for a herd expansion and had a substantial increase in our bulk tank SCC. We started with herd testing through our co-op, MMPA, and got our vet clinic involved when we did identify Staph aureus. Once we started monitoring through clinic cultures we had some difficulty collecting samples that were “clean” enough to get a valid culture rather than a contaminated result. When we started DHI testing to monitor individual cow SCC, we learned we could test those samples with PCR. We have continued to use it as a screening tool now that the Staph aureus infection rate is nearly zero. Seven Oaks: We typically average a 120,000-bulk tank SCC. It had been slowly creeping up and we knew we needed to do something. Around the same time, we were going through an expansion and Dr. Kelly Peters, our herd veterinarian, was getting nervous about all the new cows coming in. He 28

suggested a new cow testing strategy to identify contagious mastitis using PCR. We tried it and had some come back positive for Staph aureus that we removed immediately. Initially we collected our own samples and took them to the lab. Now we rely solely on DHI collected samples. The convenience of CentralStar doing all the work and just giving us the information is extremely valuable. Pagel’s Ponderosa: We are aggressively tackling Mycoplasma bovis with a zero-tolerance approach. The PCR is hands down a better option than standard Mycoplasma culture because it is significantly faster. Because of our protocol to lockdown a positive pen until individual results are back, we need answers fast. The 48-hour turnaround time on PCR is significantly better than seven days for a Mycoplasma culture. Country Aire: We are always aiming to create a cleaner herd, keep bulk tank SCC low (goal under 100,000), and weed out non-profitable cows. We see the mastitis PCR as another tool for achieving and maintaining quality milk.

Enhancing producer profitability through integrated services.

How do you use test results? Evergreen: We were cautioned about the sensitivity of the test when we first started using PCR. We got advice on how to interpret results from our herd vet and Dr. Todd Byrem (former CentralStar Director of Research and Development). He helped us decide which organisms to focus on and how to utilize the Ct values to make management decisions. That was helpful because we had a fairly high prevalence of Staph aureus in the herd and needed to manage it aggressively to eliminate the issue. We now have an extremely low prevalence, so we do not pay much attention to Ct values. If a cow tests positive, it is marked in PCDART and she is monitored closely. While it is not a death sentence on its own, it becomes another ‘check’ against her so if other issues come up, we may be less likely to treat or keep her knowing she has that positive history. Seven Oaks: Every organism found for every cow gets recorded in BoviSync. This lets us build a substantial history for each cow so if something happens later with her, we can look back and have an idea of what may have led to the issue. It also helps us determine where mastitis pathogens are coming from. Sometimes it’s seasonal, sometimes it’s bedding management, etc. The data from PCR points us in the right direction. Pagel’s Ponderosa: Mycoplasma bovis is our top priority in terms of mastitis management. Any positive cow is removed from the herd. The benefit of the PCR finding live or dead organisms means she does not need to be shedding

active organisms to find her. If she is carrying it at all, she is removed. We occasionally find Staph aureus with on-farm culture. When that happens, we send the sample to the lab to verify with PCR. Country Aire: It’s helpful to watch the history of chronic cows and makes it easy to compare their results over time. We also recheck “good” cows to be sure they are truly positive for contagious mastitis before culling.

How is your vet involved? Evergreen: The vets help to monitor the bulk tank culture results. When we first had more positive cows, the vet would advise us about options to manage those cows. Now that we have so few positives and an established protocol, the vet has less need to be questioned about the PCR results. Seven Oaks: Our veterinarian helps to create the list of animals to be tested and sees all the results. He makes treatment recommendations based on those results. Pagel’s Ponderosa: Dr. Don Niles is our on-farm veterinarian. He is actively involved in all herd health management decisions; mastitis is no different. Country Aire: Dr. Kelly Peters is the one who suggested the PCR to begin with. All results are sent to him, my son Craig, and I. We work together to make culling and treatment decisions based on results.

When is PCR a good option? Evergreen: Anytime collection of aseptic

samples for culture is logistically an issue, PCR on DHI samples is a great solution. One hindrance can be the timing of DHI test intervals when dealing with a contagious outbreak. If your protocol is to test all fresh cows at each test, you could have a positive animal shedding for weeks before she is found because of the nature of DHI testing. If there is a major issue, owner-collected samples are a good alternative to use PCR more frequently. If a large number of cows need to be tested, it’s a much more labor efficient process, especially with pooled sample options. Seven Oaks: PCR is a good option through monthly DHI samples. This is the most convenient way to monitor new infections in the herd and what may be causing them. We all know mastitis can be caused by many different things. PCR helps narrow down where the issue is coming from. Pagel’s Ponderosa: PCR is a good option for any herd that has high milk quality standards. The PCR is a way to be sure the herd is clean. It provides fast results that allow a producer to make big management decisions. Country Aire: It’s another tool to manage milk quality. I see PCR on DHI samples as very valuable, especially for a herd size like mine. I get a monthly “picture of the contagious bugs” on my dairy. I fully intend to continue using mastitis PCR long term and would recommend it for any dairy working to improve or maintain their milk quality. The data here is a snapshot of the CentralStar DHI herd. While interesting to see what is achievable, a more valuable approach is to generate KPI comparisons for your dairy using factors such as geography, herd size and breed, before drawing any conclusions. CentralStar is staffed with professionals who can help make sense of the numbers and help you with your herd’s KPIs, as well as a path to achieving your goals. If you would like help, ask a CentralStar team member.

Solutions for mycotoxins need to provide security, economy, and convenience. Chemical strategies (binders) have limits based on their chemical properties. The unique L-form properties of Select DTX™ are formulated to control mold-derived feed challenges and provide immune support to cattle. It is not a binder. Rather, it initiates and optimizes an absorptive cell regulatory mechanism in the host animal’s intestinal epithelium. On farm dairy trials support the efficacy of using DTX in the face of multiple mycotoxin exposures. Four herds that all had unresolved problems associated with chronic exposure to several mycotoxins were recently evaluated for pregnancy rates, abortion rates and heat detection. In the farms evaluated, various approaches with binders had been tried with only partial success when used at 2-3 times suggested feeding rates. By contrast, in each case DTX was used at standard dosing rates. The data points to the effectiveness of DTX as a feed challenge control additive.

Pregnancy Rates Each of the Figure 1. Pregnancy Rate Improvements with Select DTX™ herds was at Various Farms showing significant 68 reproductive Dairy #1 failures. 17.6 Dairy #2 Changes in pregnancy rates 31.3 Dairy #3 are shown; 13.3 Dairy #4 however, other metrics, such 0 20 40 60 80 as first service PREGNANCY RATE (% increase) conception and improved estrus expression follow similar patterns.

DTX was chosen to mitigate these challenges. Figure 1 shows the improvements in pregnancy rates within 60-90 days of dosing, even for the herd with citrinin, attesting to the broad spectrum protection afforded by this biological approach to mycotoxin control.

Mastitis

ResistantPRO Sires that excel in multiple indicators of mastitis resistance are more likely to develop genetic improvement.

IT’S TIME...

to know she’s still pregnant with routine milk pregnancy testing before dry off. Time to Rest: Least invasive method to confirm pregnancy. Promotes resting time which is associated with improved production.

Saves Time: Conduct through routine DHI or send samples direct. Eliminates time and labor to sort, restrain and palpate animals.

Now is the Time: At 98% accurate, identifies pregnancy status as early as 28-days

post breeding until dry off.

On-farm tests SCC and Ketone Tests Now Available T

he PortaSCC® Quick, PortaBHB™ milk-ketone, and BHBCheck™ Plus blood-ketone tests are affordable, rapid, easy to use on farms, and are now available through a local CentralStar team-member. Mastitis and ketosis are among the most common health challenges dairy cattle face. While the incidence of mastitis outpaces ketosis, both have significant impact on cow health and profitability. Research shows a single case of clinical mastitis in the first 30 days can reach $444, while the cost of one case of ketosis ranges between $117 - $289. Along with DHI SCC analysis, Mastitis PCR testing, and electronic herd-health monitoring, implementing on-farm testing for mastitis and ketosis gives producers more options in managing and monitoring critical health challenges that are known to significantly impact cow health and profitability. The PortaSCC® Quick is a 5-minute test that can be used for quarter or composite fresh-milk samples. The test screens for subclinical mastitis by detecting SCC at levels much lower than the California Mastitis Test. “The PortaSCC is a versatile test that complements existing management practices,” said Michelle Kaufmann, CentralStar Customer Solutions Advisor.

“Producers who utilize DHI have the advantage of easily identifying cows with high SCC values, and as a result, often elect to hold that cow’s milk from the bulk tank while implementing management actions to reduce infection. The SCC test can be used throughout treatment to identify when a cow’s SCC levels are below threshold, allowing milk to be added back to the bulk tank faster.” A common fresh-cow ailment, ketosis is known to contribute to reduced fertility, decreased production, and the increased likelihood of a displaced abomasum. While electronic herdhealth-monitoring systems, like CowManager, help predict the early signs of health challenges, not all farms use such technology, making on-farm testing a viable alternative.

PortaReader Clear, Quantitative Results for Mastitis Screening PortaReader interprets the results of PortaSCC somatic cell tests for subclinical mastitis, one of the leading causes of lost dairy profits.
