CENTRAL VIRGINIA CHAPTER ANNUAL REPORT 2012

Dear Friends & Supporters, As we reflect back on 2012, we think of progress and growth. We had nearly 3000 people participate in our walk and bike events, we doubled the amount of money we gave to scholarship recipients, and more Frank N. Cowan treatments options were made available to help slow Chairman, Board of Trustees the progression for relapsing remitting patients. Despite this success at the chapter level and nationally, we still have more work to do so we can find a cure, and that work needs to continue NOW. You may be familiar with our national campaign NOW, which stands for No Opportunity Wasted, to raise $250 million by 2015 to meet our goal of being a driving force of MS research and treatment to stop disease progression, restore function, and end MS forever. We are working together to fuel more MS research, focus more on progressive MS, and recruit more scientists to conduct MS research. During 2012, we have made some great progress to achieve this fundraising goal. We have evaluated over 400 applications across all research fields for funding and committed $46.6 million to 131 new multiyear projects, fellowships, and initiatives. But we are far from being done – we hope you will join us in this mission and we cannot do it without you. We have high expectations for 2013. We hope you will join us as we continue to search for a cure. Thank you for your support as we continue to move towards a world free of MS.

CHAPTER HIGHLIGHTS 2012 New Fundraising Event The chapter hosted its first Shockoe Shuffle: A Night to Benefit MS. Over 80 people came downtown for a fun night that included a tour of Shockoe Bottom’s hottest restaurants and bars. A glass was raised to fight MS and almost $4,000 was raised to assist local families affected by MS and fund critical research! Chapter Services Strive to Assist Those in Need The chapter provided $37,088.25 in financial assistance for those with short-term critical needs, such as help paying for rent, utilities, durable medical equipment, and home modifications. The chapter awarded $16,000 in scholarships to 10 college-bound high school seniors who either have MS themselves or have a parent/guardian living with MS. Chapter Returns to MS Kids Camp The chapter again partnered with the Western Pennsylvania, Central Pennsylvania, and Metro Jersey Chapters to host MS Kids Camp for children who have a parent/guardian living with MS. Over 130 children attended camp with 15 attending from Central Virginia.
