director’s message Welcome to the new season of Centre College’s Norton Center for the Arts. Whether this is your first exposure to the Norton Center or you are a long time subscriber, this season’s programs offer a diverse selection of the highest quality artists from around the world. Connoisseurs of any genre will recognize the skill and depth provided by each artist. Newcomers to a particular discipline will be introduced to the finest artists in their field. Each will be as much entertaining as interesting. When planning and identifying a central theme for this season, we kept gravitating back to the notion of “perspective.” With Centre College’s distinction and honor of hosting the 2012 Vice Presidential Debate, and recognizing that political discourse truly is all about perspective, we considered the similarities between artists and politicians. Artists use perspective in the works they create and the messages they convey. Audiences use perspective while interpreting performances and exhibitions. Voters base their decisions on their own perspectives. We knew we had the right theme. I personally want to thank each of you who offered the many wonderful comments following last year’s Newlin Hall and Club Weisiger Series performances. We believe it is our responsibility to enrich, engage, entertain and transform the lives of our patrons. We will continue to nurture the trust you have placed in us while creating crossroads between the Norton Center, its community, and the performing arts. Your steadfast support makes it possible to continue our artistic journey and our own transformation. While not every artist in our new series is recognizable by name, the perspectives they share touch each of us in some way, and we hope that you will join us as we carry on the tradition of presenting premier arts performances in Central Kentucky. Originally formed in the early 70s in Spartanburg, South Carolina, The Marshall Tucker Band includes founding member Doug Gray on lead vocals and tambourine. During the past forty years, The Marshall Tucker Band has wowed critics and influenced major country acts like Alabama, The Kentucky Headhunters and Travis Tritt, with its definitive blend of rock, rhythm & blues, jazz, country, and gospel. Founded in 2002 by Artistic Director Patrick Dupré Quigley, this exquisite chamber choir has garnered critical acclaim both locally and nationally. Lauded by the Miami Herald as “one of the best choirs anywhere,” Seraphic Fire brings together talented young singers from across the country for cutting-edge concerts of rarely heard music. The group continues to build on their reputation for giving dynamic performances, and Artistic Director Quigley was recently featured in Ocean Drive Magazine, which credited the young ensemble with “putting a fresh, hip face on classical music.” In 2005, Seraphic Fire commissioned a work from 28-year-old composer Shawn Crouch, The Road from Hiroshima: A Requiem, which was subsequently nominated for a Pulitzer Prize. The group’s repertoire includes classical and contemporary, sacred and secular. In 2011, the ensemble received three Grammy® Award nominations for the recordings Brahms’ Ein Deutsches Requiem and A Seraphic Fire Christmas.

Forty years after four legendary musicians from across the pond crafted a classic album named for the studio they made famous (Abbey Road), another group of supremely talented musicians from Washington D.C. reimagined that same album in their own unique way. For Dub-Reggae rockers, Yellow Dubmarine, the choice to take on The Beatles’ masterpiece was a natural one. The resulting sound is a sonic landscape that blends traditional African drumming, simple rock-steady cadence, horn-laced Ska groove full of Caribbean and Calypso overtones, and bass-heavy Dub “riddim” that sways and bounces and gets everyone up and moving. The band takes us on an aural journey through the history of reggae with The Beatles as your guide. From “Come Together” through “Her Majesty,” Yellow Dubmarine finds rejuvenated life in the music of The Beatles, keeping the heart of each tune present, while simultaneously re-creating them in an entirely new light.

LISE DE LA SALLE solo piano

At age 24, Lise de la Salle has been playing the piano for twenty years and gave her first public concert, broadcast live by Radio France, when she was just nine. She has awed critics with her artistry and mesmerized audiences throughout the United States and Europe ever since. With a charming loveliness, de la Salle was also the subject of a multi-page feature in Vanity Fair Germany that said, “An extremely personal beauty emanated from the pieces that she played. Lise de la Salle articulated all the voices with wonderful clarity and variety of expression.” Recognized as “a talent in a million” (Gramophone), de la Salle has appeared for recitals and as a soloist with orchestras in Paris, London, Copenhagen, Luxemburg, Salzburg, New York (Carnegie Hall), St. Paul and Miami, among others. Neither blues nor R&B, Grégoire Maret’s harmonica style is lyrical and progressive. After a childhood filled with a diverse array of musical influences, from his Harlem-born, African-American mother and his Swiss father, a local jazz musician—Maret is now considered a “harmonica virtuoso” (The New York Times). He has developed his own unique sound with a versatile style that enables him to play effortlessly across different musical genres. Maret is often compared to the legendary Stevie Wonder and Toots Thielemans and has worked with an incredible list of musicians including Pat Metheny, Youssou N’Dour, Me’Shell Ndegeocello, David Sanborn, George Benson, Herbie Hancock and Sting. His first solo and self-titled album was released in March 2012 and features collaborations with Cassandra Wilson, Marcus Miller and Toots Thielemans. His Norton Center Club Weisiger debut will feature his quartet performing works from his new album, along with jazz standards and a few surprises.

With the drive of Celtic fiddling, spontaneity of jazz, soul of the blues and intricacies of chamber music, Jeremy Kittel and his band consistently captivate audiences. Joining him are some of the most dynamic young performers on the American acoustic music scene, whose musical roots transverse the world—the four-piece band usually includes the unique musical instrument pairing of violin, mandolin, cello and hammered dulcimer. Still in his 20s, Kittel has already made a name for himself. He served as a member of the Turtle Island Quartet for five years, worked with My Morning Jacket, Chris Thile and Abigail Washburn, and performed at Bonnaroo and Telluride Bluegrass Festivals. Yep. He’s going to rock his Club Weisiger debut.

Whether performing solo or with a band, Sherrié Austin has a sound uniquely her own with arrangements built around her sweet voice and charming, personal lyrics peppered by chiming acoustic guitars, sparkling mandolins, evocative fiddle lines and the occasional ripple of the steel guitar. The Australian singer/songwriter has spent most of her life—from the time she was 14, when she got her “big break” by being asked to open for Johnny Cash’s 1985 Australian tour—on the road in the circus we call show business. And whether it was the crazy carnival atmosphere of L.A.‘s pop music and TV world (she played Pippa McKenna on The Facts of Life), the gypsy-like feel of writer’s nights during those early years in Nashville, or the thrill of soaring without a net during her days on Broadway in the Big Apple Circus, Austin has embraced it all and distills these experiences into her own music.

Due to the nature of the performing arts, all dates, programs and artists are subject to change without notice. The views and opinions expressed by the artists may not necessarily be shared by the Norton Center for the Arts or Centre College. Tickets are released only when full payment is received. Refunds and exchanges are given only in the case of event cancellation. Handling fees are not refundable. If you cannot attend a performance, you may give your tickets to family, friends or coworkers. Tickets can also be accepted as a donation to the Norton Center. In such cases, tickets must be returned no later than one hour prior to the performance to receive a statement for tax-deduction purposes.

Lobby doors open approximately sixty minutes prior to the announced performance time. Theatre doors open approximately thirty minutes prior to curtain. Latecomers will be seated at the discretion of management and may not necessarily be placed in their originally assigned seat.

children Children are welcome at events. Regardless of age, all children must have their own tickets and sit in their own seats. Out of respect to other ticket holders, the Norton Center reserves the right to have parents remove disruptive children immediately upon request.
