HOMECOMING 2012

OCTOBER 19-21

Welcome Home Alumni

On the heels of the Vice Presidential Debate, I encourage you to join us for Homecoming Weekend. In the pages that follow, you will find a schedule full of activities to ensure your time back on campus is a memorable one. This year promises to be unforgettable – we will dedicate an iconic symbol for our campus; celebrate the dedication of a new residence hall; honor distinguished alumni and outstanding athletes; cheer on our student-athletes; and delight in several musical performances throughout the weekend. Homecoming at Centre is also a special time to welcome back alumni who are celebrating reunions. When you arrive on campus, please be sure to stop by the Chenault Alumni House to check-in and pick-up your 2012 Centre Debate commemorative gift. As always, I look forward to seeing you,

Megan Haake Milby ’03 Director of Alumni Affairs

Lincoln Statue Dedication 4:30pm

Lincoln Statue Dedication • Crounse Hall Please join us at the entrance of Crounse Hall for a dedication honoring the link between Abraham Lincoln and Centre College. The 12-foot sculpture serves as public art for the campus community, embracing Kentucky’s “greatest son.” The Centre connection to President Lincoln traces back to his friendship with 1826 Centre alumnus John Todd Stuart, who served with Lincoln in the Black Hawk War, later provided Lincoln with his first law books and eventually became Lincoln’s first law partner. The statue, created by Louisville artist Ed Hamilton, depicts a young Lincoln reading a law book given to him by Stuart. At the base of the bronze statue, a Lincoln quotation to appears: “I will study and be ready.” The statue was unveiled Sunday, August 26, immediately following the College’s Opening Convocation ceremony, which played host to noted Lincoln scholar Harold Holzer. Crounse Hall is home to Grace Doherty Library and is located between Sutcliffe and Young halls.

Huey Lewis & The News have a love of music that comes through in everything they do. This is a band with heart and soul. With their simple, straightforward rock & roll sound, the San Francisco-based Huey Lewis & The News became one of America’s most popular pop/rock bands of the mid-’80s. Tapped to headline the weekend festivities, this soulful, Grammy®-winning pop group will surely take you “Back in Time!” The News have a driving, party-hearty spirit that makes songs like “Workin’ for a Livin’,” “I Want a New Drug,”“The Heart of Rock & Roll,” “Power of Love,” and “Hip to Be Square” personal rock anthems for multiple generations of music fans. Still rocking, Huey Lewis has recently been on the road with Joe Cocker, had a recurring role on the hit TV show, “Hot in Cleveland,” and released the studio album, “Soulsville,” covering some of Lewis’ favorite Memphis soul tunes.

Sociology professor Beau Weston got an NEH grant to develop a new course on “The Happy Society.” While studying happiness among both individuals and nations, he reached a surprising conclusion: Most people in the world are happy. Rich and poor, in rich countries and poor countries. Of course some people are unhappy. Some are in misery, and suffering terribly. But people are good at solving problems. It is working. In large ways and small, the world is getting better. And we can be inspired to work for an even better world.

Residential Commons Dedication 10:30am

Residential Commons Dedication • Courtyard, A. Eugene Brockman Residential Commons Please join us in the courtyard of the A. Eugene Brockman Residential Commons for the dedication of Centre’s newest residence complex. This apartment-style residential facility, comprised of six separate buildings, provides transitional housing for upperclassmen. The new complex provides students with a community building complete with a full kitchen and meeting space, a courtyard fire pit, and a pergola which houses a state-of-the-art outdoor grilling area. The Residential Commons was made possible by a generous gift from the A. Eugene Brockman Charitable Trust, created in 1981 by the late A. Eugene Brockman, father of Robert T. “Bob” Brockman ’63, chairman of the Centre College Board of Trustees.
