PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE The blink of an eye

GO SABRES I don’t know if it’s just me, but another year seems to have passed in the blink of an eye. 2012 has been a blur in terms of events and seasons coming and going. Some teams have experienced success, whilst others have simply learned and developed after another year on the court. Whatever your circumstances, I hope that your year has been one of personal growth and development both on and off of the basketball court.

As always, thank you to all those people who put in so much time and effort to make Sabres Basketball such a successful program. To the players on the court, thank you for your skill and effort each and every time you set foot on the court either for games or practice. To all the parents, coaches, managers and officials who assist and prepare every week a huge thank you for all the work you do. Testament to your hard work is how seamlessly the program just seems to run.

As we already begin to look forward to 2013 lets hope it’s just as successful as this year has been. Steven Lunardon President Southern Basketball Association.

SEABL Men Great beginnings STRONG AND SUSTAINABLE Season started incredibly positive on the back of a training camp in Houston Texas USA. It was at this camp where we selected our second import for the 2012 season, Cory Cooperwood. Cory joined last seasons import Beau Muhlbach, new recruit Luke Kendall and familiar faces of Josh Wilcher, Alistair Macdonald, Neal Mueller, Ryan Tindal, Lachlan Winter, Kye Pattrick, Michael Nowlan, Stefan Uzelac, Robert Kugler, Marty Vahala, Wade Helliwell, Matthew Turner, Tim Clark and James Mckinnon. Whilst our group could not quite get to the finals this season (5th Place), I was unbelievably satisfied with the efforts of so many of our young group. For many of the players this was their first ever experience at elite senior level and I believe the future of the boys program is strong and sustainable. We have some talented U/18 and U/16 boys coming through and an excellent and committed coaching staff helping them through.

I would very much like to thank all my assistant coaches including, Parveen Batish, Dean Kinsman, Petah Gibbs, Aaron Batish (Technical Assistant), team manager, Tony Barca, Shannon our fitness advisor, all the crew led by Robert DeNardis at Sandringham Sports Medicine for all their hard work and support throughout what was a long and at times challenging season! I would also like to acknowledge and thank Mark Chivers and Adam Steere for their support and efforts in coaching our D-League men’s team. We truly have a remarkable and I believe enviable group of volunteers driving our senior men’s program. Thank you also to Lindy Masterson, Debbie Ross, Nola Mckinnon, Marg Gorman, Louise Graham and the Board of management here at the SBA for their loyalty and support. Vince Crivelli Head Coach

The 2012 season was always going to be new, exciting and different but I don’t think anyone ever thought that it could be this successful. With a brand new team built around new players and coaching staff the group has bonded with a strength of character and loyalty that is a privilege to be involved with. Outstanding opportunities for Kennedy Kereama and Micaela Cocks along with serious injuries lead to consequences that made putting a consistent team on the floor quite difficult at times. The remedy was to build a team around good people. Players and coaching staff that are reliable, loyal and diligent in

their attempts to create a sustainable and competitive unit in the SEABL ranks. Micaela would continue to sparkle with her on court attitude second to none in the league. Kate Malpass put up her hand to lead this group and was quickly joined by the sweet shooting Rebecca Mercer and the extremely hard working Tegan Cunnigham. Billie Lucas added the youth and enthusiam to spark this team into action. Add to this Georgia Stott, who grasped the chance and the opportunites put in front of her with both hands, and our own workhorse Mel Stewart the girls were on the path to creating a steady, reliable and fierce

unit. Contributions by Elyse Chivers, Chloe Little, Chantelle Foord and Leah Swain cannot be discounted in this teams 2012 successes. Micaela’s abscence for National duties and Tegans injury at National level only united this group more. They built a strong team bonded by a hard work ethic and strong team rules. They followed it up with application and attitude that has seen them reap the rewards they are due. A great foundation for years to come and the future looks bright. Thanks very much to my support staff and assistants. Head Coach Alex Palazzolo

D League Men The future is bright

GREAT AMBASSADORS Once again it has been great to be involved with the Sabres program as D League Men’s Coach. The support and available resources within the Basketball Operations wing of the program is sensational and a credit to all those involved. This season saw us finish in 4th place on the ladder with an 11-10 record. We defeated the top team, Knox in the semi-finals and then lost the Grand Final to Dandenong by six points. I have and never will be one to publicly make excuses for a team’s performance on the Court. But I do think it is worth noting, if only to show the depth and

ability of the whole group, that of the 21 in-season games, 18 players suited up at various stages through the year, with no player suiting up for every game. The group were great ambassadors for the Club and displayed maturity and professionalism beyond their years representing the SBA. Success plays a great part in all Coaches thoughts, but in this League we must not lose sight of the big picture - that is to prepare players for the next step in their Basketball pathway and the opportunity to play at Championship level. Three players, Stefan Uzelac, Rob Kugler and Tim Clarke all

had opportunities to play in the Championship team throughout the season. Many thanks also to Adam Steere for his support as my Assistant Coach and to Jackson Hollands who did a great job as Team Manager. I believe the future is bright for the Sabres. The tools are in place to continue the development pathway of the Champions of the future and I am excited by the young talent that is appearing through the Junior Programs. Mark Chivers

D League Women Foundation built on hard work

“We always knew it was going to be a tough game against you guys, you always try hard” Kilsyth 17/3, Knox 18/3 & Frankston 25/3.… this was the post match speech that we received from the opposition, after the first three games of the season, which we lost.

COACH PAUL GRAHAM There was no doubt that it was a throw away line and that the opposition did not respect or fear us. We also had the mindset that we were no match for the big clubs in the competition, such as Dandenong and Knox. From round 4 onwards, we went into every game with confidence and a no excuse attitude and we made it our mission to earn the respect of the rest of the league. We were often the smallest, youngest and least experienced team but we made sure we were one of the most competitive. The focus for the girls was to increase their intensity and work ethic at training, to earn their spot on the court, to challenge themselves to change the

way they play and to put effort into the team on and off the court. This included learning what it takes to be a senior player involved in a senior program. I’m proud to say that every player that was involved in the D-league program this year achieved these goals. We won 6 games, which was a good achievement and an improvement from last year however we were still disappointed with some of our results and we felt that we could have finished with .500 record and played finals. We won the series against Kilsyth, Frankston and Ballarat. Losing the series against Bendigo in 3 tight contests and were involved in some great matches against the top 3 teams.

We now head into next season with a foundation built on hard work and look forward to setting new goals, such as reaching the 2013 D-League Finals. I wish to thank Trish Kiploks for being team manager, my two assistant coaches Tyler and Ryan for your support, the captain Kate Fitzgerald for your ongoing mentoring of players and to the D-League supporters that attended every game. Also a big congratulations to Shannon Perrett, as at the time of writing she has been informed that she will be receiving an award at the D-league womens grandfinal this weekend. SABRES BASKETBALL OPERATIONS Its all so exciting!!!! I am pleased to present my third report as GM Basketball Operations for the Sabres program. Over the past three years many initiatives have been introduced that have improved the delivery and standard of our club. Some may argue otherwise, but when I first came to the club in August 2009 we had only one representative team in VC and at the completion of grading phase 2 this year for the first time in the clubs history as far as I am aware we qualified a boys and girls team from U/12 to U/18 in all VC grades. This achievement is significant as it indicates the improvement of our program. It takes hard work to achieve such a result and only serves for us to better improve our quality and delivery of our program across the board and to the Southern Basketball Association in general. Many people have contributed to this success. I would like to thank the tireless efforts of those people in our administration and support team. It starts at the top and our CEO, Vince Crivelli leads us with Sabre

passion. His vision is to provide a quality opportunity and experience to participate in basketball in the Bayside area and make it the number one sport for the region. Vince is always challenging us to expand our business. He provides a platform for us to work in a rewarding environment that is very challenging and demanding. The Sabres representative program has 31 junior teams participating in the VJBL competition. We have senior teams that participate in SEABL and D League men’s and women’s competitions. When you combine that with the 600 plus domestic teams that play at the King Club and the various other development programs such as Bee Ball, community inclusive access and the referees who are supervised by Marg Gormon there are approximately 6,500 people who are in the stadium each week . That is an amazing volume of traffic that has to be managed and our administration team does an outstanding job to make this work. I would like to acknowledge the efforts of Lindy and Debbie in particular who are

so dedicated to their roles. They along with Louise, Mel, Nola and Marg are the unsung heroes of our club. I would also like to acknowledge the support of the Sabres Board, to President, Steve Lunardon and the Board I would like to thank you for your approval of the professional development opportunities I have received this year. This year the SEABL men’s program went for a preseason camp to Houston, Texas for two weeks. It was a self- funded tour the guys had to pay their own way and it was a credit to them that 14 players attended. With the senior coaching staff, Vince Crivelli, Parveen Batish and Paul Graham traveling with Rob De Nardis, responsible for physio screenings of potential import players, Petah Gibbs assessing and screening the athletes well being and Board member Murray Payne videoing every session. This tour was a resounding success. Yes all the staff paid their way and I was fortunate along with Vince to spend and entire day in the NBA with the Houston Rockets. We were courtside watching the rockets practice and was introduce to legendary

NBA player and now the Head Coach of the Rockets Kevin McHale. We were shown through the whole operation of the Rockets and had lengthy discussions with David Patrick head of International recruiting. This was an amazing day as was the complete basketball experience in the USA attending college games, NBA games conducting 14 on court sessions in our camp. Working out potential imports as well as our own Sabres players. Further to this experience I was fortunate to participate in the New Zealand Tall Ferns campaign for Olympic qualification. Whilst the girls did not get there they were one game away from a quarter final berth with the winners of the quarter finals going to London. Disappointing but a great experience. Being apart of international competition is incredible. The intensity the skill the quality all goes up several notches as one would expect. The opportunity to travel to China and Turkey to play games against China,

Angola, Czech Republic and Argentina revitalized my involvement at the international level. No, I am not going anywhere. Having these opportunities just makes you reflect on what and how I can influence our Sabres program with this knowledge. From a senior point of view, skills and international trends can be delivered to the senior group. Everyone at our club should be so proud of Micaela Cocks representing NZ. Micaela was world class whilst away and continues to produce for our SEABL Women’s team and congratulations to Alex and the girls for making our first ever appearance in the finals. In the juniors the greatest impact will be to build on the skills program that is in place whilst increasing our intensity level. Next year the emphasis will be on giving greater feedback and instruction to our players as to the expectation and style of game we want to play. Again I will conduct a coaches summit at the commencement of the new season

to outline our points of emphasis to all of our dedicated coaches who sacrifice a lot. Together with Sinisa Markovic who has made a huge impact around the club delivering the agility and elite development programs. Theme Sunday sessions will take centre stage to educate our coaches and players. I would also like to thank Kennedy Kereama for his work in this area as Junior Program Manager. Kennedy as we know has been appointed Head Coach of the West Coast Waves in the WNBL and we wish him all the best in that role. Ian Leckie, Chairperson of our representative program again provides a great resource of energy to get a lot of things done that others may not devote the time to do so. Ian thank you for your ongoing commitment to Sabres To our volunteer helpers in particular our team managers and to all of those parents who attend games throughout the year all over the state your support is greatly appreciated.

U12 GIRLS ONE Exceeded expectations!

COACH JO WOOD Right from the start of the season, the Under 12.1 girls have exceeded many people’s expectations. No one, except probably all of their biased and devoted parents, thought they’d make VC and without even a full 10 player roster to run with, they did. The team consists of Nicola Caine (Candy), Ella Cigognini (Ciggi), Holly Davies (Lolly), Grace Gordon (Gag), Stephanie Kelly (Peph), Florina Lihari (Rida), Emma Sandmann (Sandy), Imogen Tozer (Tazer) and Ella Williams (Will). The season started in a hurry with four wins in a row then the girls hit a few hurdles and the combination of a couple of drawn matches and a couple of close losses, saw them finish 11th on the overall ladder and into VC Reserve for

the remainder of the season. Since the second half of the season started, the girls have won 3 of the 6 games and lost the other 3 by 2 points or less – they remain in second spot on the VC Reserve ladder and are now setting themselves for what will hopefully be a successful finals campaign. There have been many highlights for the season so far but without doubt one of the most exciting was against Frankston at Frankston – less than 3 seconds left in the game and Nicola Caine shot from outside the perimeter with a 3 pointer to force a tie – similar to the one Boomer Patty Mills got away with less than 2 seconds on the clock to beat Russia but not quite as good as Opal Belinda Snells from mid court to force France into overtime! But you get

the picture, it was mega fantastic for our girls to set it up and pull it off under such pressure. On behalf of their parents, I would like to congratulate the girls, who have all become such close friends, on a fabulous season played with grace, sportsmanship and maturity beyond their years and wish them every success in the finals series. And finally on behalf of the girls, I would like to thank coach Jo Wood, assistant coach Alex Langridge and all of the parents and friends who have supported the girls throughout what can best be described as a long season of basketball! U12 GIRLS TWO Worked well as a team COACH JAMIE TREASURE

We have also had some great games where we worked well as a team, only to fall short on the scoreboard.

The girls performed really well during grading, winning some tough games to qualify for Met 1. It has been a tough season, with not many wins coming our way. We have performed well in many games, but not being able to score enough to get over the line. Our first win came in Mornington against the third placed team. It was an outstanding defensive game where we kept Mornington to 7 points at half time. The end score was 20-17 in a thrilling finish. We were pumped to get a win on the board. Our second win came in a great team effort in Knox.

Finally, playing third placed Frankston at home, we were down 20-10 at halftime, but clawed our way back to take the lead with seconds remaining and stealing our third win of the season. We have spent the whole season on the bottom of the ladder, so any win has been great. We have also had some great games where we worked well as a team, only to fall short on the scoreboard. Well done to Ruby, Hailey, Izzy, Zoe, Gizem, Giorgia, Mackenzie, Flick and Sienna for developing their skills and basketball knowledge over the year. Good luck to you in 2013.

A huge thanks to Melinda for being a great team manager. You are very easy to work with and you dealt with the tough things and allowed me to focus on coaching. Jamie Treasure Coach

U12 GIRLS THREE Development at an impressive rate COACHES ARLY HOCKING & ELYSE KIPLOCKS This is the first season of representative basketball for the majority of the team and they have come together quickly as a cohesive unit. Under the guidance of our coaches Arly Hocking & Elyse Kiploks the girls’ knowledge, skills and experience have developed at an impressive rate. The girls have had some fantastic wins over the course of the season with all players contributing to the game plan. The girls have been in the top four for the majority of the season and have been challenged in most games. The Under 12 girls East 1 section has proved to be an even competition with bottom half sides defeating top half sides. This meant that the girls had to be on their game each week in order to win. The girls performed well during the season and finished with a 12 -6 win/loss record and finished 3rd on the ladder and gained a well-deserved place in the final series.

The girls success lead to an invitation to represent East in the East vs. North West regional challenge in July 2012. The girls performed well and represented Sabres with a professional attitude however they went down to Keilor 2. Although they had a loss they were a part of the first East Regional team to defeat North West since the inception of this tournament. The girls have had a great season and have enjoyed the representative atmosphere. It has been a pleasure for the coaches, parents and supporters to see the girls develop and importantly enjoy their basketball. Go Sabres ! Stuart Saunders Team Manager

TIME TO SHINE In the first grading match of the season the 12-1 boys went down to Hawthorn by 60 points, I think at that point we were concerned that they didn’t have what it takes to make VC, we weren’t to know then that Hawthorn would go the entire season undefeated and would go on to thrash every other team in grading. The under 12-1 boys had a successful grading season, managing to hang on to qualify for VC in the final rounds of grading. The first half of the season was

a time of development and bonding for the team, however did not produce any wins. The mid-year split saw them put into VC Reserve where they managed to combine good offence and defence to start getting the numbers on the board. A couple of good wins mid-season allowed us the opportunity of vying for a place in finals, the next two weeks will give the team the chance to really show what they can do, and even if finals are illusive then they will still have had a great season, developing their skills and making new friends.

The mid-season game against Hawthorn saw them keep within 6 points of the opposition until half time, which shows just how much the boys had developed even in the short time since starting. Thanks to the parents who travel great distances every week and also to Coach Michael Nowlan who shows great commitment and patience with the boys. Suzi Brown Team Manager

U12 BOYS TWO Hard fought wins COACH RYAN TINDAL/DANIEL SHEA The 12 (2) Boys are a team of nine boys that have all jelled together as a team so well. There is a mix of 5 top age and 3 bottom age and one triple bottom age. They are lucky enough to be coached by Ryan Tindal, one of the stars from the mens SEABL team and early in the season we were fortunate enough to have Dan Shea come on board as assistant coach, which is great for the boys as they got two mentors! After some very hard fought grading games the team secured a spot in Metro 2. It is obvious that the grading was correct as out of our 18 games 9 games were won or lost by less than 5 points,

we also had two draws and one blow out win of 50 points and all the rest of the results were still below 10 points. Ben moved to Sydney with his family so unfortunately he didn’t play the last five games and he was certainly missed. We finished the season with 7 wins and two draws and in sixth spot, just one spot out of finals which is a fantastic effort from a team that had only 3 players that had played Sabres last season. We have had some fun nights out with the team finishing up with a dinner on the last game night, it’s fantastic that two coaches, nine players and all of their families can get along so well and

enjoy the season together! A very big thank you to all of the parents for travelling to the games and supporting the boys and for always being willing to help out with scoring. Thank you to our awesome coaches Ryan and Dan, the boys have learnt so much from you and this will show through in their future seasons. Lastly to Alex, Ben, Cameron, Edmond, Kaylan, Max, Max, Mitch and Tyrese, you boys have shown everyone what it is like to play as a team, your have made your coaches and your families very proud. U12 BOYS THREE Far from boring!! Looking back on the season, I could describe it as “uneventful, consistent, without drama” because the most “out of place” event during the season was the Coach arriving 10 minutes late to a game after being stuck in traffic for 2 and a half hours to a location that was only an hour away! The season was far from boring. Personally, I looked forward to each Friday night game. From the quality time with my son in the car to and from the location, the boys respectfully signing the team sheet and leading their own warmup prior to listening attentively to their Coach, Steve Brown. In the beginning, Steve held a joint meeting with parents and kids outlining his coaching philosophy and his aspirations for our kids during the season. Very soon, Steve had the kids listening, participating, co-operating, improving and succeeding. Steve encouraged the parents to listen in on the “coaches huddle” after each game where he emphasised the “good” during the game and highlighted

areas that needed more attention. As a parent that hadn’t played the game, I found this extremely beneficial and has helped me appreciate the game even more. After the pre-season, the team qualified for Regionals and each week we, as parents, continued to be thrilled with our sons’ development. To kick-start the year, we participated in the Dandenong Australia Day tournament. In close to 40 degree heat, the team reached the semi-finals. Participating in this tournament helped the kids bond and very soon they were playing as a team as opposed to 5 individuals on the court. Once the season started, it wasn’t until Round 10 that we had our first loss, followed by a couple more interspersed with a few more wins. At time of writing (Round 15), being 2nd on the ladder, we have a great chance of making the finals series. During the year, we held a few social gettogethers, starting with a BBQ breakfast in the park. The highlight for the kids would be chosen as “team of the week”

COACH STEVE BROWN and running out with the SEABL men at a Sunday afternoon game, participating in a mini-game at half-time followed by a team dinner. The kids enjoy each other’s company on and off the court and many friendships have been forged. My Team Manager job was made all the more easy by a supportive parent group. Kids always arrived on time, game payments made and a rotating roster of able and willing scorers. We were very privileged to have one of Sabres best coaches! On behalf of the parents and kids, I extend all our appreciation and thanks to Steve for his coaching and mentoring. I will look back on the 2012 season with fond memories. I extend a big thank you to Steve for his dedication, to a friendly group of supporting parents and most of all, a delightful, competitive group of young boys! Roxy Kruger Team Manager

U12 BOYS FOUR Committed to success IT’S ALL IN THE ATTITUDE

“All kids need is a little help, a little hope and somebody who believes in them.” -- Magic Johnson A big thank you to Marty Vahala, who gave our boys this and a whole lot more.

COACH MARTY VAHALA The Under 12-4 boys team started the season with a new coach, 9 excited boys and a bunch of apprehensive parents who were all new to rep basketball but enthusiastic about what lay ahead. Our coach Marty Vahala, had recently arrived from Perth to participate in the SEABL Program. Marty is a calm, gentle leader and I would have loved to have known what Marty was thinking in his first training session with a team of very energetic, spirited boys bouncing their bodies and balls around the court.

What they were lacking in skills, they more than made up with their passion to play basketball!! The boys had a great start, winning the majority of their grading games. In our last grading game, a very exciting, nail biting game against Sandringham under 12-3 boys, Harry fell on and broke his arm. Although the boys rallied to win this game for Harry, despite some very close games, they were unable to secure a win until Harry’s return 6 weeks later. Although the boys did not make it into the finals, they had a very successful

season in terms of development. The boys gained a tremendous amount of basketball knowledge, skills and experience. They progressed from a group of 9 boys playing individually, to a team who supported each other and were committed to success for the team. HUDDLE TIME PART ONE That intimate time between a coach and their players WHO KNOWS WHAT GOES ON IN THERE?!!

SabresMagazine2012#1.indd 21

22/08/12 4:13 PM

This year’s Sabres Under 14VC team started together last October full of hope and expectation that we would replicate the results of this group from 2 years ago, and finish top 3 and get to the Australian titles. But it didn’t quite pan out that way. For some reason, the VJBL managed to rank us at #6 rather than #3. This made qualification a bit harder, and we started the season with our worst game of the year against Dandenong on a hot October night. We lost and coach got angry. We then went on to win our next three games and qualify for VC and the VJBL managed to put the best four teams in the competition, including us, in one pool. This made qualification for the Australian titles more difficult. From there, our luck really tailed off. As a team of nine players, we had to endure three long-term injuries (suck it up princess to Ella, Morgan and Kate), two overseas trips (bon voyage to Anna, Zoe), one selection for the State Primary school netball team (congrats to Keeley), various other commitments, romances on the road trip (cannot mention names because parents might not know), and vomiting at tournaments (classy stuff Carly). I think that Chloe and Sally should consider bodyguard protection for the rest of the season, so that at least these two can maintain their perfect record attendance.

But the girls never lost heart. We managed to qualify for VC before Christmas. We also qualified for the Classic Tournament and finished in eighth position, having beaten two teams who will go to the Australian Nationals. The team, with coaching from Jamie Treasure, went undefeated on the roadtrip, playing against a number of teams with older and bigger girls. We continue to track OK in the top division of VC, and look set to participate in the Finals. And we hope to have all nine girls back playing together for the first time on a Friday night since Easter in the last round of the season. So we think that we may do some real damage to teams above us in the finals. That is, unless the cars break down on the way to the finals. Highlights of the season have been: • Beating Knox, Canberra, Northern Suburbs, and Hawthorn • Travelling to Ballarat • Losing to the Classic Champion, Bulleen by 2 points • Roadtrip- enough said • Individual development. What we offer as a team is some of the most attractive basketball going around in this age group. This team of girls have moments which are beautiful- unselfish transition and offensive plays where the ball flies without dribbling to an open shooter, defensive sets where opposing

U14 GIRLS ONE

teams don’t get close to shooting because of our pressure, streaks of shooting where the ball hits the net. We are athletic, unselfish, quick, skilful and knowledgeable.... at times. But at other times, we are young, lack concentration, stand back and spectate. All of our girls had great moments during the season, but we sometimes lacked the consistency, hardness and composure of the stronger sides. . I’d like to congratulate all our players on their continued commitment, improvement, sportspersonship, good humour and friendship. Our players carry themselves magnificently both as athletes and as people. A big dose of gratitude to Natalie, our assistant coach, who probably did a lot of the individual coaching and instruction with kids on the bench. Thanks also to team managers Tammy and Garry ( so good, you get to keep the job forever), Kim B for videoing games (ditto), parents for transport, scoring, paying, roadtrip fundraising and supporting, and a great group of highly talented and very friendly players. But to members of this team, I finish in Latin again- Cave ne ante ullas catapultas ambules- Translated- ‘If I were you, I wouldn’t walk in front of any catapults.’ Mike Burke

As everyone knows the VJBL season takes a few months to grind into action through an extended grading period. The Under 14-2 girls came together as a core of players who had played together for a number of seasons as well as two bottom age players. Leigh O’Reilly commenced as the coach drawing on her extensive experience as a player at the elite level. The Eltham-Dandenong tournament is always a good litmus test to measure a team’s readiness for the season. The girls started the tournament with confidence winning some close games. They played exceptionally well in the scorching heat and suffocating humidity, and after so many tiring games, they drew on that last little bit of energy and won the Grand Final against Warragul. A great effort. The season looked very promising.

The team won most of their grading games and skimmed into the VJBL League 1. Confident to show everyone that this is where they were meant to be, the girls fought out every game, but when it came down to those very last minutes, they just fell short. Usually by 1,2 or 3 points! Over Easter the team headed to South Australia for the Easter Classic. They had a great time splashing about at the beach and in between times made the semi-finals by virtue of some characteristic gutsy wins. The semis saw them against the McKinnon VC team and the girls pushed them right up until the final minutes. They played a great game and had a wonderful time throughout. Later in the season most of the girls went on the NSW road trip. They had a spectacular time. Forming new

friendships, and seeing different places! The girls have become a very close-knit team. The VJBL season is long and can take its toll. Unfortunately our girls were subject broken wrists, concussions, injured feet and shoulders. However their commitment to their basketball and teammates kept them eager to play their hardest and always push every game to the limit, even if they didn’t win. The scoreboard hasn’t always reflected the team’s commitment; the girls have had a wonderful season and acquired lots of skill and love of the game with the help of their knowledgeable and dedicated coach. It’s not only about winning. Commitment, support for the team and skill development are all important measures of success in the long VJBL season!

U14 GIRLS THREE Different game strategies! COACH GRANT WADDELL

The team was mix of top and bottom age girls with varied experience at the start of the year, a combination from three differing Sabres teams. By the end of the season, they become a bunch of good friend who enjoyed hanging out together as much as playing basketball. On some home games, parents were seen dragging the girls out of the stadium well and truly after the game had finished as there was so much to talk about in their little huddle. Coach Grant Waddell had to use all his experience in keeping the girls

concentrating during training sessions as it become a giggle fest and more talking. It was amazing how focussed the girls become when penalties such as push up’s were introduced after drills were not undertaken to coach’s requirements. The season was that of missed opportunities where the girls had some wins, some close games and some blowouts. Whilst our team did not make the finals, these changing outcomes allowed different game strategies to be trialled along with players having the opportunity to develop across multiple positions.

The competition was reasonably even with many of the teams being at a similar level coming to the end of the season. The last playoff positions were there for the teams with the greatest hunger for the ball. The season ended with a good bunch of friends who have a close bond and enjoyed their year of Sabres basketball. Cheers Peter Cook Team Manager

U14 GIRLS FOUR A dynamic and balanced team COACH MICK MCGUIRE In a team that included five bottom age players and the majority of players new to rep basketball it took the girls a while to settle in. A challenging grading phase, in which there was movement of players in and out of the team, resulted in the 14.4’s playing in East 2. Participation in the Dandenong – Eltham Tournament saw the team reaching the semi-finals. A BBQ get together, gave the players, coach and parents the opportunity to get to know each other. Despite an unsettling start, a dynamic and balanced team has developed.

Each player has enhanced their skills and makes the effort to ‘step up’ when required. As a result of Mick McGuire’s coaching the girls have developed both their technical abilities and mental toughness. At the time of writing this and with only 1 round remaining before finals, the girls have lost only three games all season. Holding off challenges in the closing minutes of games or digging deep to grab those extra points when needed has allowed the team to win those all important tight games and take the points. As we approach finals the team is a comfortable 6 points clear, on top of the ladder.

The friendships and camaraderie that have been developed are further enhanced by some of the girls playing together in other teams and codes. Sharing car-rides to and from training has given individuals an opportunity to share stories and build bonds that will be remembered long after the games are forgotten. Thank you to all the players and parents for their support in my role as team manager and I wish the girls all the very best in their future sporting endeavours. Maree Nolan Team Manager

SABRES U14 EAST COAST ROAD TRIP DAY ONE All of the families arrived at the King Club at 9:30am, with Bec doing a quality Tetris game of packing the bus with all of our luggage, food and equipment. We left by 10am, with the drive to our lunch spot at Euroa. The boys listened to individual music (Finlay could be our next X-Factor) and played video games whilst the girls either played ‘Eye-Spy’ or watched Jaws (not kidding). We arrived at Albury, NSW for our first of five games. In previous years Albury have always been quite strong, and this year they had mixed teams, with the boys coming up against a majority U16 side and the 1st Girls team, an U18 player. Games were played at the revamped Lauren Jackson Stadium. Highlight: Zoe took two charges, but also hurt her wrist and lip in the process. Jamie thus created the “Lolly Bag for a Charge” rule amongst his girls to invoke the same kind of effort. We arrived back to our motor village and relaxed, had showers before Lasagne and salad for dinner. Considering it was the first night, after a long day, the dinner was outstanding! Our young athletes were into bed on time, but turning the lights out and actually sleeping was another thing. At one stage after dinner, all athletes were in one cabin, so the socialising had well and truly begun

DAY TWO

The group awoke to a cold, frosty morning. Some were bright-eyed; most were still half asleep as they came into the communal kitchen for breakfast. There we met a young Swedish lady, who was working for the local traveling Fruit Fly Circus! After settling back in to the bus and pieces of fruit distributed, Grant’s Sweets Emporium took over, blowing all competition away with its variety, friendly service and affordable prices. The group arrived in Canberra early and used the extra time to visit the Australian War Memorial. The athletes were astounded by the information and emotions demonstrated by the displays and contributed to the wishing well and donations area. After the memorial, we headed to the AIS. Whilst waiting in the car park for

our keys we played some fun, gender mixing games (created by Jamie and Phil, classic teacher games). Morgan was an outstanding contributor and loved dealing with the boys. After checking the adults into our rooms and organizing the young athlete’s equipment, the boys headed off to Radford College, whilst the girls stayed at the AIS to host the Canberra teams.

DAY THREE

An early start for the adults, getting in breakfast before our young athletes were returned to us at the AIS. There were stories of having pet dogs sleep on beds or of mansion style housing and blokes names Craig. We checked the athletes into their rooms, some lucky enough to have their own and be able to stretch out their legs. Most were sharing communal toilet/ shower areas, which worried some. The group then headed down to the practice courts, for a training session run by Senior Assistant Coach, Paul Goriss. The athletes were put through an intensive session with similar drills to the AIS scholarship holders. Morgan Riley described it as ‘an array of drills to improve our fundamental basketball skills’. Although Morgan lacked the learning process to make a layup throughout the entire session, Georgie also injured her ankle during the session. After a clean up and change of clothes, the entire group headed over to the dining hall for a buffet lunch. Salad rolls, wraps and hot chocolate were the key attractions. Joanne’s aim and drinking skills will need some practice. The group then raided the AIS store, purchasing an array of clothes, water bottles, balls and equipment. Kate and Joanne decided that the entire store needed to come home to Sandringham between the two of them. Over $1500 was spent amongst the group. A mix up with the tour times and we had some time to kill in the afternoon, where athletes played arcade games, pool, table tennis and generally gossiped about each other, in front of each other. Georgie and Emily also showed their wares on the old piano in the games room, whilst the female adults worked on their tans in the courtyard. Unfortunately the AIS couldn’t provide us with a tour guide, which was disappointing to all. We decided to

take a bus tour up to the peak of Black Mountain, which has the Telstra Tower atop it. Our young athletes were amazed at the sheer size, but also the increased wind speed and decreased temperature as we had a 360degree view of Canberra and the outlying ACT. After a quality buffet dinner of pastas, rice and either ice cream or cheesecake for desert, the group (apart from Carlton supporters) moved into the Theatrette to relax and settle in with lollies watching The Simpsons Movie. Some watched, whilst others snuck around the theatre or talked too much. It was then off to bed, with some using too many electrical devices and keeping each other awake quite late with speakerphone discussions. Many could hear Finlay and Kate out in the corridors.

DAY FOUR

A very early morning for the group as we needed to have breakfast, pack the bus and make a quick getaway to head to our next games (Sutherland). Many young athletes marveled at how they were able to get up, considering the late nights they had had; whilst the adults on the bus (minus yours truly) all fell asleep 10mins into the trip. We stopped at Bargo, on the way to Sutherland. Both Grant and Phil claimed to have the greatest pie ever their lives (salmon and prawn filling). The local chef told stories and took pictures with some of the kids until we hopped back on the road, to head into Sutherland to play the Sharks. Players were instructed (forced) to sit next to someone of the opposite gender (the first this had occurred), and find out about their partner and something that nobody on the bus would know. Stories ranged from gory injuries, to criminal acts and everything in between. This was the first point at where the rule “What is said on trip, stays on trip” was enforced. This was also the first (and not the last chance) for Grant to embarrass Alyza.

Mitchell Silvey hitting two 3pt shots from basically the car park and the girls hitting multiple 3pt shots from some very structured offence (Mike would be proud of their work!) Our young athletes relaxed at the courts and mucked around, getting into hot chips and trying to create cheers for their fellow teammates. We then made the short trip on to Wollongong, arriving at our cabins in the sunshine. Time was spent unpacking the bus, kicking the footy and burning off some energy. The gentlemen coaxed a room of girls to swap to gain access to extra couches, promising rewards, which never really came about. This was completely the fault of Grant and his influence on daughter Alyza. Dinner was chicken and chips, followed by cupcakes for dessert to celebrate Georgie’s 13th anniversary of her day of birth. This was followed by the athletes relaxing and gossiping amongst themselves throughout the cabins, with another uneventful night of sending them all to bed.

DAY FIVE

After breakfast and teaching the girls to kick a footy (Kate has the family genes in her) the group walked down to the beach. Some swam in shorts and t-shirts, whilst others played with sports equipment or jumped off the sand dunes in a wild array of movements, Ash and Finlay being the most daring. The group then casually came back to their accommodation, where the athletes and I took a dip in the indoor heated pool or spa. Piggyback battles and pyramids were all the rage, followed by a sprint race between super-fish Morgan and the ageless Phil. Due to potential bikini malfunctions to Morgan, Phil won comfortably by a body-length, but was then disqualified for being too old. The group cleaned up and had a BBQ in the sunshine for lunch. Who knew we would be having a BBQ, in bathers, outside here in Wollongong during the middle of winter? We headed off to the Snakepit for our games against the Illawarra Hawks. This was the old home of the NBL franchise, with many old banners and information scattered around the complex. With its balcony seating and historical imagery, it was the perfect setting for some great basketball.

GAMES 1st Girls- 51-29 (great team game, Zoe and Kate bests) Boys- 53-45 (Finlay had 19 and James 15 points) 2nd Girls- no opponent, played scratch game against adults, won by the adults due to Jamie’s charge taking, Phil’s cherry picking and the new debut of import Bec (bus driver). Getting paid import fees of course! We have also brought home with us the annual Illawarra/Sandringham trophy. Some posing and pictures from the 4 winning coaches (Jamie, Phil, Ella and Nick…not Grant). The little man on top of the trophy might need to be glued back on though before next year’s trip! Both boys and girls teams at half time produced quality chants. The boys, an altered rendition of ‘Old Beaumaris’, whilst the girls producing an original, stolen chant from another sporting carnival. The girls were clearly more experienced, but the boys won the tiebreaker on the bus later that evening! There is now video evidence that the boys can sing (not sure about the quality of their efforts though).

DAY SIX

Another early morning wake up (these were becoming regular), with most athletes looking bleary eyed and wanting the comfort of a warm bus and a pillow (that included yours truly). On the road to Wagga Wagga, we backtracked along some of our previous destinations along the mighty old Hume. Would Grant and Phil beg Bec to stop at Bargo for another Salmon/Prawn Pie? It seemed she didn’t agree, thus taking the direct approach. We arrived at the Wagga Wagga courts, with all athletes a little tired and worn out from the extra travel. The 1st Girls were first to step up to the plate, whilst the other teams relaxed waiting for their last games.

GAMES

After the games we cleaned ourselves up at the cabins and then headed to the local RSL for our last dinner. An all-youcan-eat buffet meal, including prawns, oysters and 3 kinds of roasts awaited our group. But the desert was where the athletes’ focus lied, with ice cream, jelly and mousse all the rage! We then moved into a different

area of the RSL for our Trivia Night extravaganza. This was run by Mr. Jamie “golden boy” Treasure and Mr. Phil “Sanka” Thomas (my head is still itchy from wearing that Jamaican beanie). ‘Love and Basketball’ is a great movie, would have been very appropriate for the evening!

DAY SEVEN

The final day of our Roadtrip! A relaxing, later start to the day was required. A long day of driving ahead and the group knew that patience and tiredness would be tested. Grant and JA produced quality sausage and egg combinations for the group for breakfast, followed by the pack-up of all the rooms. The athletes have become very adept at getting packed and helping out Bec with the bags. On the road and a female athlete that will remain nameless (initials are Sally Burke) decided that her electronic equipment needed to spend more time in Wagga Wagga. Thankfully John and Andrew’s personal cheer squads were able to collect the equipment. There was much rejoicing! We encountered our first day of rain, but surely not our last for these holidays as we move ever closer to Sandringham and ‘typical Melbourne weather’. We couldn’t have asked for better weather during our trip! The athletes were encouraged to tell the group on the bus microphone, 1 thing that they enjoyed or learnt whilst on tour. Many mentioned the food and lollies and competitions, whilst others mentioned the billeting and fun had in certain cabins. Lunch was at Benalla McDonalds, with the group being covered by money raised from Grant’s chocolate sales. There are still kids that buy Happy Meal’s and the toys were a great hit! Homeward bound, full stomachs and into the pouring rain. Along the way it was time to clean out the rest of the food, get rid of some more snacks and finalise everything for when we arrive back at Sabreland. (There may also be a shocking sleeping photo of me, that I want deleted please!) Could our timing be any better? We arrived back at Sandringham at 5pm on the knocker. Another day of perfect timing travel wise and a credit to the meticulous organisation before the trip began and the adaption of those on the

EAST COAST ROAD TRIP trip when it was needed. Bags unpacked, bus cleaned out, plenty of hugs and kisses. Quick goodbyes, but I’m sure all the athletes and their new friends will keep in touch via all of the social media out there. Back to the regular life, the rat race and training kicks off again Sunday, where it will be a chance to show off the new friendships and bonds that we have all made to the rest of the club. Although so much fun was had by Natarsha, Ella and Emily, (seen here atop the Telstra Tower) they were all very happy to be home to their loving families.

ROADTRIP CONCLUSION

There is an anonymous quote which states: “When all is said and done, it’s not the shots that won the game that you remember, but the friendships you made along the way”. This couldn’t be truer of our NSW Roadtrip for 2012. The basketball games, whilst entertaining, fast-paced and high scoring, were not the most important factor involved in the Roadtrip. The smiles, laughter, passion and excitement for the game that we love, and traveling and playing of it with friends that we love or the new ones we’ve now made along the way, cannot be underestimated. None of this experience could be possible without many people coming together for a common cause (much like a basketball team would). There were many aspects of the trip that couldn’t have just happened without some extremely hard work. To the following, thank you for all that you have done: - All who donated and fundraised at the various events. It was always great knowing that we were safely covered for

affording activities and items for our athletes throughout our trip. Hopefully a couple more events will help with the expenditure after we’ve settled back in at home. - Sponsors, both big and small. The contributions made have certainly lowered the financial burden placed upon families, whilst also showing a great interest in the development of our young athletes basketball and social lives. - The parents back home, without your continual support, organisation before the trip, messages and well wishes, and help upon our return; the trip couldn’t have been the success that it was. - The Sandringham Sabres office staff, for your organization and care of Roadtrip money and contacting of the different places involved in our trip. - Our bus driver, Bec, for her professional care whilst on the road, but also her fun-loving, caring support of our group and her friendship. She is now definitely a Sabre! - On behalf of the players and coaches, to the mums that attended our trip. To Tammy, Soph, Mads, Nic and J-A, the organisation, cooking, cleaning, mothering, laughter, support, scoring, team-managerial skills and overall friendship provided by these lovely ladies was beyond outstanding. They took care of every child, and let their own off the hooks a bit. They were motherly to Jamie, Grant and I and made our coaching and focusing on the court that much easier! - From the athletes, a thank you to the coaches. All three coaches can now say they know, trust and support every single athlete involved on our Roadtrip. Thank you to Jamie for his 9th tour, his experience, knowledge, organisation and sense of humour were greatly appreciated.

Thank you to Grant, for annoying his daughter Alyza constantly, for his Sweets Emporium (raising more valuable funds) and comedic ‘taking the Mickey’ out of everyone approach! I also hope my games/quizzes, jokes and possible wingman and matchmaking skills were of value to you all. A final, serious message, to all of the young athletes: Don’t forget a moment of the trip. Find a special place inside for all the memories you have made, the friendships continued and the new ones created. The Roadtrip hopefully taught you all some valuable lifelong skills: manners, organisation, neatness, healthy habits and most importantly communication and socialising skills. The adults on the trip couldn’t have asked for a better group. Your behaviour was outstanding, your manners and respect for the adults and for each other something to behold and your general excitement and enjoyment of the experience something that you hopefully will never forget. Good luck in the future for all aspects of your basketball careers. Jamie, Grant and I all fully support you and are more than happy to help and guide you in any way throughout your junior careers. The talent shown on the trip definitely can be enhanced and the potential shown is truly outstanding. Please make sure you all speak so very highly of our trip (that won’t be hard) and remind others on the outside of just how exciting, entertaining and valuable our Roadtrip is. There’s certainly already planning and thinking about next year in my mind, so count me in for 2013! Yours in basketball Phillip Thomas

COACH IAN LECKIE A successful season isn’t always judged on whether you win the championship. It can be one where every player show’s a willingness to improve and develop. This group of boys has certainly showed this. We started our season with some beach training, hoping to improve the boy’s fitness. Worked for some not sure about others… Our grading games were a mixture of close wins and losses and we finally made VC on the very last grading game. After several close losses we ended up in the bottom 5 of our pool placing us in VC reserve for the rest of the season. The season hasn’t been kind to

us and I’m sure the coaches would say some times very frustrating when we know what the boys are capable of but sometimes it just doesn’t reflect in the result. We travelled to Adelaide and had a very topsy turvey experience both on and off the court. On court some close games, some questionable games and some losses, off court a family arrived in one vehicle and left in another… but overall a great time was had by all. We competed in the Nunawading Tournament and missed out on playing the grand final by the smallest of margins. As of writing this the boys still have a chance of making the finals in VC reserve, their position on the

ladder doesn’t reflect the development or improvement in skill level each boy has achieved throughout the season. This is due to two amazing coaches, many thanks to Ian and Dwayne for their incredible dedication, patience and endless hours coaching the boys. Also to make a successful team you must have a willing group of parents and that we have. Thank you to all the parents and Jacqui for coming to each game full of enthusiasm and encouragement. There might/might not be a NBA or NBL player amongst our lot, but I’m sure there’s a boy band. Go “The Bayside Factors” David and Sharon Jones Team managers

Reflecting back to the start of the season, on how all the boys went through try outs and the selection processes, wide eyed and keen to play, from the very first game together, until now late in the season, and hopefully heading into finals I can see that it has been a very long and productive journey. It has been a privilege to be along for the ride. As the season has progressed, the boys have matured in body, mind and basketball skills under the mentoring of their coach Phil Thomas. Watching their confidence and belief in each other increase after each and every game has been amazing. It has been a very busy year and they should be proud of their accomplishments. The team competed successfully in the Adelaide tournament winning the Grand Final U14.2 A Grade, and narrowly missed finals in the Dandenong/Eltham tournament, and the Nunawading tournament. Phil Thomas- Unflappable, measured, (except for the white board marker

incident), Loves his basketball-knows his basketball, Strategist, Teacher and mentor to the team, Master and commander, Jake Tranter- Unbeatable burst of speed up the court, tough as a nut, great 3 point shooter James Campbell- Unsurpassed under the basket, perfect rebounder slipping them in off the glass Stuart Harris- In, out, up down, he is all dogged determination, never gives up, super smooth Jasper Dunkley- Silky smooth skills, pleasure to watch his floating lay ups, talk about hang time! Finlay Callahan- Loves it physical, loves a charge, impenetrable defense and a real team player. Austin Hollingsworth- Amazing rebounds, great physical presence under the basket and a lovely shot. Joshua Hicks- Lightening fast up and down the court, great skills, pleasure to watch his outside shots. Jordan Cole- Hypnotizes his opponents with his moves, great 3 point shooter, puts his body on the line

Zac Straker- Always gives 100%, great physical presence, will not back down nor ever give up. I know the jobs not over in regards to the finals, but irrespective of what happens, i think we can look back at a successful and satisfying year the boys have had being a member of this team. Thanks to Phil, for all your tireless efforts to make sure that the boys enjoyed their time playing basketball. Your measured reactions to some of the refereeing decisions are something that I have admired and will try to adopt. Lastly but most importantly, I would like to thank the parents who gave up their Friday nights/Sunday mornings and holidays to travel all over Metropolitan/Country Melbourne and Adelaide to ensure that the boys were at the respective stadiums at the correct times, ready to play basketball. Your commitment of resources, time and effort to the improvement of your son’s basketball should be applauded. Sean Callahan Team Manager

U14 BOYS THREE Committed to improvement

COACH JOSH WILCHER/JAMIE BATISH The year started for the 14.3’s at the Australia Day Dandenong Tournament. The boys and their coaches (Josh & Jamie) had an opportunity to acquaint themselves with a “runner up” trophy to show for the event.

The boys subsequently qualified in East 1. Our confidence following the tournament took a hit with no wins in the season until round seven. Despite the “lows” the boys remained committed to their training and games each week. Some new friends were made and some lessons in life learned. Unfortunately finals were not achieved.

The only major injury was to our coach Josh who tore his Achilles in a SEABL game late in the season. Good luck to all the boys going into the try-outs for the 2013 season and thanks to our coaches Josh and Jamie for the 2012 year. Team Manager Peter Windhager

CONTINUED RESILIENCE The U14.4 boys team have done a fantastic job to get to where they are this season and their coach, Jackson Hollands, and all of their parents are very proud of their efforts and continued resilience. These boys have had a very disrupted season with broken ankles, broken collarbones, extended knee injuries and general sickness, not to mention the

usual camps and family holidays that can lead to players missing games. It was encouraging to see the response of the boys in light of any adversity that was put in front of them. Their record through the season saw them flirt with option of finishing in the hunt for finals. In spite of all these difficulties the boys have worked well with each other and rallied to make it to position 5 on the ladder.

With one game to go, we need to win to make finals. Good luck boys and congratulations on a fantastic season. Kellie Boland Team Manager

U14 BOYS FIVE Mental and physical toughness!

Here we are at the end of a season again. I’m sure all of our parents would agree that it went way too fast. In that time we have watched our boys grow both in height and ability. They commenced looking really unsure of what was ahead but proved to us that they could take on a challenge set by their coach Peter Ligeti. On our first training session as a team, Peter took the boys outside to give them some fitness training and showed them what they should be practising at home. He told them what he expected from them for the season and what we were to expect from him. He wanted the boys to improve their fitness and aggression on court. By the end of the season our boys have become fitter, but more

noticeably have learned to be physically tougher on the court against their opponents. They were a quiet group of boys, some with not much confidence but Peter managed to teach them to be strong both physically and mentally. We entered the Australia Day Tournament which gave the boys a great chance to get to know each other better and become more trusting with each other on court. With the weather being so hot over the tournament we were all looking for some relief from the heat. As we had a few games at the Cranbourne stadium, it gave us a great opportunity to cool down in the fantastic pool facilities they have next door. Some of the boys were brave enough to ride in the space bowl, which was like a water filled bowl that once you entered you spun around

a few times like a ball spinning in a roulette wheel then would drop down in the middle into the pool. Soon after the tournament it was back to serious business. The season commenced and the boys came up against some tough competition. We won some, lost some, drew a couple, and somewhere in there became a better team to what we were in those early grading matches. We suffered a few injuries, with a broken hand, and 2 broken arms, one which required surgery. These boys who are now a year older, have learnt so much from their training sessions and game time, and are now ready to take on a new season. Good luck boys. Juliette Farrington Team Manager

U16 GIRLS ONE They do the club proud!

COACH PAUL GRAHAM These girls are a talented bunch and the nicest kids to be associated with. They do the club proud! The team made VC before Christmas which was the first goal of the season. Practice matches in the New Year saw the girls beating Dandenong and Nunawading. It had been a few years since this had happened so things were looking up. The start to VC also went very well with the team winning three of their first four games before the Easter holidays. The team headed to Adelaide for the Easter Classic. Whilst we had a fantastic trip, it was tough competition with the best teams from Adelaide and Melbourne in the Championship grade. Unfortunately this year we didn’t make finals. Nevertheless, our stay down at

Glenelg was fabulous and the girls had a great time altogether. They really bonded as a team. Back in Melbourne we started to have some injury worries and illnesses all at once. A few of the following games were played with only six and seven players. Unfortunately results did not go our way and we missed out on the Classic and VC by one point on the ladder. So the next goal was to win VC Reserve. There was still some amazing competition to be had and it wasn’t going to be easy. They started the round with some mixed results. The most memorable so far was a thrashing of Bendigo at our home court. When we travelled there earlier in the season, the team was subjected to the most

biased refereeing which resulted in a very controversial game. The girls did a fantastic job under the circumstances showing real maturity and responsibility. We were all very proud of them. At this stage of the season with only three games to go, the team is sitting third on the ladder. From the beginning of the season to now, the girls have all improved immensely. They are working harder at training and playing their games with more intensity and focus the majority of the time and they are playing more consistently. Who knows what these girls can achieve in the future! . Julie Fairhurst Team Manager

U16 GIRLS TWO Potential with real confidence COACH WILL SCHUBERT

The girls have responded well to his teaching as demonstrated by the results now being achieved.

The team was a good blend of 5 top age and 5 bottom age girls with an even split of talls and smalls covering most court positions. Our aim was to qualify for VJL 1or higher but eventually after a mixed grading season we found ourselves in Metro 2. Whilst our skills and endeavour were high it took a while to merge the playing abilities together and gain an understanding of the team ‘playbook’. Results at the Dandenong/Eltham tournament showed we had a lot of work to do. The Adelaide Classic at Easter was a fantastic experience for the girls who again played solid basketball without success. The Easter Egg hunt on the beach (complete with ‘Giant Bunny’) was frenzied, with little restraint shown

in the collection and consumption of chocolate. It was almost as scary as the trip across to SA, where a stopover at the Birchip Hotel for 5 of the team, was punctuated by ghost stories and strange noises in the night. In our first regular game of the season we were soundly beaten by McKinnon to the tune of 23 points, but a measure of our improvement was when we turned the tables on them in the return match and defeated them by a point on our home court. (A season highlight as McKinnon is the current ladder leader 3 wins clear of it nearest rival) Apart from the top team the section is so even it is going to come down to the last match to determine placing for the finals. Sabres has won 4 out of its last 6 matches, including a 1pt buzzer beater against 2nd placed Altona. However it

appears we are going to fall agonisingly short and miss finals action by one game. Will Schubert has been an outstanding coach for this group of girls. He has been enthusiastic, patient and controlled, always striving to get the best out of each individual. The girls have responded well to his teaching as demonstrated by the results now being achieved. With a more aggressive and physical game style evolving the team is fulfilling its potential with real confidence. Finally thank you to a fantastic group of parents for your sustained support of the Players, the Team, the Coach and the Club. Hayley Peters Team Manager

U16 GIRLS THREE A calm and steady influence creates success

The 16.3 girls coached by Ryan Heggart, had a slow start to the season losing a couple of vital cross over games to be placed in East One. The team competed in the Australia Day tournament in January, giving opportunity for the girls to get to know each other’s game. Olivia showed herself to be a tenacious defender, finding open team mates and putting pressure on the defence while Kylah, a quick defender with great instincts, reads the play well and is smart and crafty on offence. The season low was losing Cassie De Nardis due to injury late February. Competing in the Queen’s birthday Nunawading tournament, the 16.3 girls won 5 out of six games making it

through to the semi where although very tired put a great fight to go down by 10 points. They played a range of interstate and metro teams beating both teams that played off in the grand-final. Pia put in a great weekend with consistent shooting and showing that she is not afraid to take on the defence with her ability to handle the ball while Alana played well both ends of the court and was quick and aggressive on the defensive end. A team sleep-over topped off a fabulous weekend. Throughout the season, Mia has been a solid and constant player, outstanding rebounder and able to defend all 5 positions while Lulu, another outstanding defender and

rebounder, has provided game changing offence. Ali has the ability to punish the defence with either a jump shot or driving to the basket while Sophie, an all round player scored from all positions, penetrating the key or shooting from the 3 point range. Georgia has been a game changer at both ends as an incredible shot blocker and defender or driving to the basket. The ladder at the end of the season show 12 wins and 4 losses, placing the team 2nd overall. The season is yet to finish as Ryan with his calm and steady influence, guides the girls into the finals. U16 GIRLS FOUR A beneficial experience! COACHES LEAH SWAIN/ALISON PAGE Over the course of the season the girls have improved dramatically, after a slow start to the season with one game to go we have finished the season winning 3 of our last 4 games. The effort and enthusiasm that every one of the girls has brought to the team has made this season an enjoyable one. A highlight to the season was certainly making the Grand Final in the Nunawading Tournament. This was a great achievement and confidence booster. The girls had to beat the undefeated Adelaide team in the last round to make the finals, it was a tough game and they ended up winning by 3. Two hours later the girls won their Semi by 5 points in extra time, making it through to the GF. The GF was another tough close game against Adelaide who got away to an 8-point lead at the end. The girls put in 110% for three straight days making the experience very beneficial and a fun long weekend.

They have definitely had their fair share of injuries, illnesses (& coaches) through the season. I am very proud of them, they have put in a lot of effort and I hope to see them continue to do well next season. Thanks also to Leah, Chloe & Alana who have also coached the girls. Alison Page

U16 BOYS ONE A talented crop WORKING HARD TOWARDS SUCCESS

As in any season 2012 has had it’s high points and it’s challenges. A great start with a successful 1st phase of grading straight into VC and an opportunity for the boys and coaches to consolidate and bond over practise games during phase 2. A triumphant trip over to Adelaide with a 7 – 0 record and the U16 Easter Classic title under their belts the team settled into the regular season. After the 1st half of VC the boys

finished 2nd on the ladder and with the readjusted fixtures found themselves in 3rd spot for the beginning of the 2nd half of the V.C competition. This also gave them the opportunity to compete in the McDonalds National Junior Classic at Dandenong where they acquitted themselves really well, finishing 6th overall. Some fantastic play and a “game’ high when they defeated Diamond Valley to finish top of their pool, another of the season highlights.

The 2nd half of the season has proven very competitive and the team is well in the hunt for the finals and trying to secure a spot in the top 4 for a double chance. As team manager it has been a pleasure to work with a great group of talented boys and fantastic and ever willing parents. Mandy Lemons Team Manager

U16 BOYS TWO Keep a positive oultlook COACH BEN FRASER

The boys had a great season and throughout the year played some excellent basketball with great sportsmanship.

CONTINUED ON THEIR WINNING WAY! Ten teams fought out the Victorian Junior League Two season for U/16 Boys. To say we had an ordinary start to the season was an understatement. After 3 rounds we were sitting 9th. It looked as though we were in for a long season of quiet car trips home after long drives of late night basketball lamenting our losses.

Ben Fraser the coach though kept positive, we’d lost the first three games by margins of 1, 2 and 3 points so all was not lost. With some good training sessions and the boys starting to gel together as a team, marginal losses turned into good wins. By Round 10 Sandringham 2 were now sitting 3rd on the ladder after a 7 game winning streak. We continued our winning ways losing only two further games and being on top of the ladder

with one game to go. Unfortunately we lost to Eltham 2 so could not claim the ‘top of the ladder’ kudos. The boys had a great season and throughout the year played some excellent basketball with great sportsmanship. Good luck to the boys in their finals games. Martin Richards

It was great watching the boys improve game to game learning new skills from Steve and Corey. We had an excellent team this year with Harry the hook shot specialist. Benji

who sinks the most amazing layup’s. Lachie, the 3 point specialist. Zack, get out of my way while I’m driving to the basket. Adrian, when he gets angry he is on fire. Chris, who just loves to steal the ball. Jason, with the explosive drive. Tim (Spices) who will take on any player small and tall. Tyler the defensive player.

U18 GIRLS ONE A credit to the work they have done

A SEASON OF HIGHLIGHTS

It is fair to say that the 2012 season didn’t follow a normal path. Grading was a time for the girls to learn to play together a place in VC secured in the very last grading game. The girls played a senior tournament in Warrnambool over the January long-weekend with some solid games against former WNBL players and some wins against teams from the University of Melbourne. The resignation of coach Stewart Baird, for family reasons, saw Tyler Wilsmore come on board. The Adelaide Easter Classic was an opportunity for Tyler

to learn how the girls played, and a little of their characters. Jess managed to make an impression with the Knox team, although none of them came to the team dinner in Glenelg. Later in the season several parents choose to join the umpire’s advisory panel although a number of their rule interpretations were not in the book! A highlight of the season was qualifying for VC Championship when the pools were split mid-season. This was the first time this group of girls have been in Champ and a credit to the work done by the girls with Tyler. After a game against

the Tigers, their coach commented that the Sabres had pushed his team more than any other team this season. Injuries and other commitments toward the end of the season meant that there were rarely more than seven players for the second half of the season. The girls were competitive in most games but, with fewer rotations possible, did struggle to run out the second half. Overall, Tyler has helped the girls learn more about basketball, and themselves, and the parents have enjoyed their time together.

U18 GIRLS TWO Challenging but rewarding COACHES MICAELA COCKS & ARRAN BATISH

The under 18’2 girls team has overcome a few challenges this season to be currently second on the ladder and in the finals. The loss of 2 girls, a coach as well as the girls combining school work, social life, other sporting commitments had led to a challenging but rewarding season for the girls with every week all girls needing to play at their best to make sure we had a win.

We have been fortunate to have been coached by Miceala Cocks and Arran Batish for the majority of the home and away games. This has allowed the girls to draw from Miceala’s international and SEABL playing experience and Arran’s incredible basketball strategic knowledge and has seen the girls playing some of their best basketball. The support of the coaches, parents and

the girls commitment to their coaches, team mates and having fun at training has contributed to their success. We wish them well for the finals season and as this may be the last season for some of these girls hope that in the future they will continue to be involved in this wonderful sport. Helen Kanellos

U18 BOYS ONE A very big task COACH DAVE MITCHELL & ASSISTANT COACH ISRAEL JONES Wow what an up and down season we had, firstly big task with a mixture of boys and we made VC early, after a great start to the season we were just pipped at the post by one point and missed VC Championship, still noting to date Knox have not been beaten in Championship, and we have had two wins against them. We have been travelling along in VC Reserve at a steady pace, and losing a couple of nail biters by 1-2 points, our biggest margin being 14 points to Keilor who are currently still on top of the ladder. All going to plan Finals are in a couple of weeks, so we will endeavour to climb our way back to the top. Throughout the year, we competed in Dandenong Tournament, gelling together as a new team with top and bottom age players. Great team spirit is coming together nicely. Later in the season we ventured to Adelaide with the bulk of the team and had a ball, missing the grand finals in A Grade after loosing

to Keilor. Then upon returning home we competed in the Nunawading/Eltham tournament with Issy at the helm and loosing the grand final after six games. Big thank you to James and Jordan from 18’2s for filling in for that weekend, fantastic effort by the boys. A big thank you to all my parents who have done duty each week, we look forward to a hike down the road tonight to play 2nd place Maffra. Wish you all the best for the forthcoming seasons. Last but not least Dave and Issy – you have pushed the boys to excel within themselves and bringing their fitness levels to the forefront. Thank you both for a great season, with more to come. U18 BOYS TWO High octane games POSITIVE AND FOCUSSED

Our team comprised mainly upper age boys with just one from bottom age. Many of the boys hadn’t played together before. Consequently, it was a fairly tough job for our newly appointed coach Gavin Tonkin, to get the boys playing well together as a team. With much enthusiasm we started fairly high up in the Grading pool. After a couple of good wins and some unlucky loses we finished up in Victorian Junior League One. The season has been one of mixed fortunes with some fantastic wins and some disappointing losses. We have had some injuries that have hampered some of our performances;

Jordan Geer was very unfortunate to break his ankle in a domestic game towards the end of the season and will miss the finals series. There has also been a toll as a result of other sporting and school commitments. Despite this the boys have remained positive and focused on improving. Gavin has maintained a very high level of enthusiasm with his innovative training methods and drills and his constructive attitude towards coaching in games. At this stage we are placed 4th on the ladder. Anything could happen in the finals, as when this team is playing well they can really perform and challenge any team in the pool.

Many thanks go to Gavin who has been a fabulous coach to the boys, a great role model and showing unwavering commitment to the team. Thanks also to Sinisa and Dave for their intensity and assistance at training. Thanks to all the parents who have always put their hand up to help throughout the season and lastly to the boys of the team, who have worked so hard to come together and play basketball! U18 BOYS THREE Never give up! ADELAIDE HIGH!

The 18 – 3 Boys started the season well winning through to Metro 3 and starting the competition season well, gaining 4 wins from the first 8 games. It’s been a hard road for the rest of the season on the scoreboard. This team has never given up, being competitive and keeping opposition teams honest and making their mark defensively. The highlight of the year was the Adelaide road trip for the Easter Classic

where the team gelled together and won the A Grade consolation final with a really solid 40 minute performance. There were several memorable aspects of the Adelaide trip including paintball against the 18 1 boys and the radical haircuts that evolved over the 4 days thanks to the clippers on hand. The first game on return from the Adelaide trip was the team’s biggest winning margin for the season, I put it down to the haircuts!

Well done to the team and thanks to the dedication of coach Ian Leckie and assistant coach Andrew Shepherd who guided the improvement of the team and provided the guys with opportunities to grow both within basketball and as young men. Richard Hollands

U18 BOYS FOUR FOR THE LOVE OF THE GAME There was no greater pre draft excitement , than the buzz that went around Sandringham about the new rookie coach from New Zealand ayKarlos! The boys started the season stocking up on kiwi jokes only to find out that coach was the biggest joker of them all. At least outside of training that is, on the court it was all business and they soon realised that the step up to u18’s was going to be a big one. The season started slowly and the boys found it difficult to get a roll going, one week they could beat the top teams, the next lose to the bottom ones. New plays were soon consolidated and the boys worked well at training to slowly claw their way back up the ladder. At time of writing, they managed to pull off a great win to get themselves into a certain final’s berth. This season has been all about learning new ways to deal with pressure. Parents have learned to appreciate new forms of music on the way to games, (if we are allowed to drive) ,interestingly, the boys still wear earphones to listen to other music at the same time! We have all witnessed amazing shots from

WAY outside the three point line and seen some of our boys ALMOST dunk the ball, well.....at the very least hang spectacularly from the rim!!! Josh- the smiling assassin, triple threat, traffic director on court, lethal 3 point shot, great ball carrier, play maker. Joe- tough and reliable under the basket, great defensive skills, good vision for team mates, hard work at the board, 2nd efforts. Dylan- consistent 3 point specialist, unafraid to take it to the basket, takes charge when he needs to and turns a game around quickly Ollie- straight to the basket through traffic, offensive threat in motion, solid, consistent dependable team player Brad- skilled ball carrier fearlessly attacks the boards, great 3 pt specialist, takes on the big men without a backward step Andrew- dependable inside threat, solid, reliable , takes the ball to the hoop and pivots, ducks, weaves, shoots, scores, every game Nick- amazing outside 3point shooter, hard for the opposition to guard, athletic, dependable with the ball first

season dynamo Luke- makes it look easy, strong under the basket, effortless shooter, calm in a tight spot, team player every game Michael- follows coach’s orders, supports team mates, makes the difficult baskets and inspires others to work harder to keep up with him George- handy tall, strong rebounder, good outside shot has helped the team to some tough wins , solid in defence. Karlos- mentor, tactician, leader and off court joker, much respected by the boys and parents ay bro? The team has worked hard on and off the court, Karlos has shown them that you can also have fun playing basketball. It has been refreshing to see a coach who encourages the boys when they make a mistake, to keep going and enjoy the game. We would never have been able to enjoy this season, without the most organised tm in the world, nicole west. She never stops smiling and encouraging the boys, she keeps us up to date and on time. COACHES A world of pain......

EVERY ONE IS DIFFERENT Every coach is different.... each has their own peculiarity and behaviours. If there was a study on the human condition I’m really not sure where the coach would fit in. They don’t get to step foot on court and feel the rush of

the battle, they put in long hard hours and get little financial reward. They deal consistently with athletes with huge egos that need to be confronted and challenged without the same consideration in return.

They spend hours away from their families and partners with no real explanation as to why. We don’t care on the why ... we are just glad that they do. Thanks to you all.

U20 BOYS ONE Loaded with talent

ALWAYS A MITCH ON THE PITCH The Sabres U20 season has been somewhat a “mixed bag”. The disappointment of early grading and qualifying losses was concerning to the coach and the playing group. Loaded with talent, and appearing wellbalanced in structure, the 2012 team had expectations of a VC grading. Less than desirable training and game-time attitude, composure, and concentration, mixed with a touch of over-confidence, however, proved to be the major barrier

to team success during these early weeks. The team managed to qualify in Metro 1, and apart from a first round loss, the team focused on a unified plan to make the most of the season and excel. At the time of publication, the Sabres U20s had finished on top of the ladder, two games clear, with a 14-4 record. The challenge ahead is to commence a finals campaign with the loss of 4 players to college or surgery.

The boys can certainly achieve their goals if they have truly learnt from the mistakes of the grading phase. In the end the team motto will be their guide: “Always a Mitch on the Pitch”. Petah Gibbs
