Follow the clues Discover Lagos’s urban geological and paleontological secrets pioneering, innovative and unique project,” this is how Luis Azevedo Rodrigues, director of the Centro Ciência Viva de Lagos (Lagos Science Alive Centre), defines three new bilingual guidebooks that feature hundreds of points of interest to discover in the Algarve's cities of Lagos, Faro and Tavira. The Lagos city guide was the first one to be released earlier this year. Science, history and heritage come together in a simple suggestion: discover different types of stone in an urban environment, admiring their framework and specific context. "Urban geology and paleontology explain the history of the stones used to build our facilities. What we’re suggesting is to visit these places in our cities and look more closely at what was used to build them. There are materials of different origins and ages. And many of them have visible traces of living organisms from millions of years ago,” explains Luis Rodrigues, who came up with the idea for the guidebook. The idea came in 2013 and made Rodrigues roam through the cities in search of different stones. "It's a different way of looking at things. It’s one of the objectives of these guidebooks: to challenge people to pay attention to what usually goes unnoticed,” he explains. The routes in these first three guides suggest various points of interest: from cafés, walls, churches and squares, to monuments, monasteries and even cemeteries, among others. "Although there are scientific publications, in terms of guidebooks for the general public, this is a pioneering project at national level." A way of generating interest and bringing residents, schools and tourism closer to geology and paleontology. In addition, “it proves that the Algarve has much more to offer than just sun and beaches, further enriching the touristic and cultural diversity in the region.” 왘

O guia da cidade de Lagos foi o primeiro a ser lançado no início do ano de 2016. Ciência, história e património juntam-se para uma proposta simples: descobrir diferentes tipos de rocha em contexto urbano, admirando o seu enquadramento e contexto específico. “A geologia e paleontologia urbana explicam a história das rochas utilizadas na construção dos nossos edifícios. A sugestão é visitar estes locais nas cidades, olhando com mais atenção para os materiais com que foram construídos. São materiais com origens, percursos e idades diferentes. E muitas delas têm vestígios visíveis de seres vivos com milhões de anos”, explica Luís Rodrigues, o mentor do guia. A ideia surgiu em 2013 e colocou Rodrigues a circular “pelas cidades à procura de diferentes rochas”. “É uma maneira diferente de olhar para as coisas. É um dos objetivos destes guias: desafiar as pessoas a prestarem atenção ao que normalmente passa despercebido”, explica. Nos três primeiros guias os percursos sugerem variados pontos de interesse: desde cafés, muralhas, igrejas, praças, monumentos, conventos, e até cemitérios, entre outros. “Embora existam publicações de carácter científico, este é um projeto pioneiro a nível nacional em termos de livros-guia destinados ao grande público”. Uma forma de despertar o interesse e aproximar os residentes, escolas e o turismo da geologia e paleontologia. Além disso, “provam que o Algarve tem muito mais do que sol e praia para oferecer. mais a oferta turística e cultural no Algarve”. Estima-se que muitas das rochas presentes nos vários percursos pelas três cidades algarvias tenham sido importadas de várias partes do mundo. “Algumas resultantes de trocas comerciais. Outras com origem em navios que navegavam sem carga mas que precisavam de peso para se equilibrarem”, aquilo a que em náutica se chama “lastro”. “Quando os navios chegavam ao cais comercial, deitavam fora o lastro para poderem encher os porões com mercadorias. Algumas dessas rochas eram tão boas que, muitas vezes, eram (re)utilizadas em obras, por exemplo, de reconstrução e reparação de igrejas. Encontramos rochas com características muito especiais, que não existem em Portugal e que raramente se encontram no país”. Rodrigues salienta que “a missão dos Centros de Ciência Viva é promover a ciência e tecnologia mas estas não estão isoladas de tudo o resto. A arte, a história, o património estão também aqui presentes. Desenvolvemos uma estratégia que permitiu integrar várias áreas do conhecimento”.

Independent exploration or guided tours? The choice is yours! Explorers who wish to make the visit autonomously have the basic information at hand, in terms of location and geology found at each of point of interest. They are accessible to families, students from primary to university level and even tourists. But for those who are eager to know more, one can always request a guided tour at the Centro Ciência Viva de Lagos. The visits are part of the educational and tourist offer, and can be made at any time for a minimum of ten participants.
Buying the guide book With an initial first print run of three thousand copies, the guidebooks have an approximate cost of 10 euros. They can be purchased at the Centro Ciência Viva de Lagos or at FNAC stores in the Algarve.

is estimated that many of these stones found on the various routes in the three cities were imported from all over the world. "Some resulting from trade. Others originating from ships sailing without cargo but that needed weight for balance, which in nautical terms is called “ballast”." "When the ships arrived at the commercial wharf, they would get rid of the ballast in order to fill the holds with goods. Some of these stones were so good that they were often (re)used in construction, such as in the reconstruction and repair of churches, for example. We found stone with very special characteristics, which does not exist in Portugal and which is rarely found in the country.“ Rodrigues points out that "the mission of the Centro Ciência Viva de Lagos is to promote science and technology, but these are not isolated from everything else. Art, history and heritage are also present. We have developed a strategy that allows us to integrate various areas of knowledge."
Points of interest The cemetery of the Carmo Church in Tavira, is one of the staging points that
que mais encantou Rodrigues. “Neste cemitério existe a campa de um soldado. Com o tempo, a erosão fez aparecer amonites. Aos meus olhos, acabam por ser dois seres vivos que lá estão sepultados. Um humano e um outro ser com mais de 100 milhões de anos. Há ali uma partilha entre seres de diferentes espécies e diferentes tempos, e tem para mim, um simbolismo quase poético”, revela. Outro dos pontos de interesse que surpreendeu o geólogo foi uma pia batismal da Igreja de São Sebastião em Lagos, onde encontrou corais fosseis. “É interessante verificar que o local onde se faz este ritual de iniciação e passagem de um não cristão para cristão, é feito com uma rocha de um passado em que os mares eram quentes. A água que permite fazer o ritual de passagem é ao mesmo tempo, uma rocha de águas passadas, que apresenta corais”. Em Lagos a proposta passa ainda por explorar dezenas de outros pontos de interesse tais como o edifício Fábrica da Ribeira na Avenida dos Descobrimentos, a muralha e o jardim da Constituição, o Painel de Alcácer Quibir, as praças Infante Dom Henrique e Gil Eanes, o centro de Ciência Viva de Lagos e a rua Portas de Portugal. 쐽
Exploração autónoma ou visitas guiadas? A escolha é sua! Os exploradores que pretenderem fazer os percursos de forma autónoma têm a informação básica em termos de localização e geologia de cada um dos pontos. É acessível para famílias, estudantes desde o primeiro ciclo até universitários ou até mesmo turistas. Mas para quem tiver sede de saber mais, pode sempre solicitar uma visita guiada junto do Centro de Ciência Viva de Lagos. As visitas fazem parte da oferta educativa e turística, e podem realizar-se sempre que reunido um número mínimo de dez participantes.

From my point of view, there are two living beings buried here. A human being, and another being over a 100 million years old. Two beings of different species and different times share this space, and for me, it almost has poetic symbolism,” he says. Another point of interest that surprised the geologist was the baptismal font at the São Sebastião church in Lagos, where he found coral fossil. "It is interesting that the place where we perform this ritual of initiation and passage of a non-Christian to a Christian, should be done with a stone from a time when the seas were warm. The font, which is used for this rite of passage, is unusually covered in coral. “In Lagos the guidebook goes further by exploring dozens of other points of interest in the Ribeira factory building, on the Avenida das Descobertas; on the wall and garden of the Constituição; in the Alcazarquivir Panel; on the Infante Dom Henrique and Gil Eanes squares; in the Centro Ciência Viva de Lagos and on the rua das Portas de Portugal. 쐽
