GDYNIA DESIGN DAYS We believe that an intensive exchange of experience and cooperation provides an opportunity to put wind in the sails for the following year and that the ideas born during GDD have the power to spread throughout Poland and abroad. The organizer of the festival is Gdynia Design Centre, Pomeranian Science and Technology Park Gdynia and the City of Gdynia.

Gdynia Design Days is an annual festival showcasing the latest trends and best practices in the field of design. Brimming with inspiring exhibitions, lectures, workshops and discussions, the program is directed toward professionals, as well as young entrepreneurs and design enthusiasts, seeking inspiration for creative activities and creative leisure time. For 10 days in July, Gdynia becomes the best summer meeting place for the design industry.

MANUBA – COLLECTION GDD Let us retrieve the memories about local crafting methods and bring awareness of regional identity by remembering what is slowly becoming forgotten. We are witnesses of and participants in the fourth industrial revolution. Such terms as sensors, applications and metadata, have entered the universal dictionary. On one hand, new technologies allow you to live better, sometimes more easily and quickly, while on the other hand, a partial transfer of one’s life to the virtual space and its “tabletisation” results in a reduced experience of materials, textures and smells. It is the uniqueness of materials such as wood, ceramics, wicker, natural fibers, hand-forged steel that allow one to move into an analog world, full of history and the extraordinary abilities of people who craft with them. It is through their efforts that we can get back in touch with a past that will become an inspiration for the future. The MANUBA GDD Collection is a series of products created especially for The Gdynia Design Days festival. MANUBA is an acronym from the words: Baltic manufacture. Each product is the fruit of a designer’s collaboration with a craftsman. Apart from the final effect, the exchange of experiences between the designer, who comes up with a new design idea, and the master craftsman is also important.


The first series of MANUBA products was launched in 2016 during the 9th edition of Gdynia Design Days under the curatorial supervision of Paulina and Jacek Ryń.

The next edition continued the idea of recovering the forgotten crafts. Referring to the festival’s theme, the 2017 collection is inspired by the landscape of a beach after a storm. When a strong wind rises the waves and turns the tides, the sea washes its wealth ashore and in the calm which comes after the storm, patterns of sand prints are revealed. Curator of MANUBA GDD Collection 2017 was Alicja Wianecka. The resulting objects form a coherent and contemporary collection of interior elements. Gdynia Design Days is the first festival for which such a collection is created. What is important, each object is produced in a limited series.

MANUBA COLLECTION GDD 2016 PAULINA AND JACEK RYŃ

– are part of a group of designers

involved in the creation and implementation of new solutions in the field of product design. Each solution is a step forward in their development as designers. They are not afraid of new technologies, materials, manufacturing methods and challenges related to these aspects. They design for branches and industries that are distant from each other. Previously they carried out projects concerning automotive industry, interior design, construction or rehabilitation. When designing they take into account not only market conditions but they also try to understand the situation and stage of development of their partner. They build cooperation on the basis of mutual trust and they believe that it is the key to reaching an effect which will be more than satisfactory for both parties. Frequently their clients include companies implementing a product for the first time. For every project they try to find the optimal resources, which allow for the minimization of the risks associated with the implementation of a new product. Thanks to their experience and specialized tools they are able to prepare complete technical solutions and select appropriate means of production adapted to financial

DESKA DO DESKI // LOW TABLE APPLE AND CHERRY WOOD, JOINERY, CNC ROUTER DESIGNERS :

MALAFOR – AGATA KULIK-POMORSKA I PAWEŁ POMORSKI CRAFTSMAN:

BOHDAN SZCZUDŁO

The project combines traditional craft with contemporary joinery. The tradition is visible in the carpentry: joints and use of old apple and cherry wood. Its modernity lies in the option for the modification of the tabletop, as the boards are separate and are joined through the use of neodymium magnets. The boards were made in 3 different widths - 5, 10 and 15 cm. The obverse and reverse of the top are different from one another. One side has been milled utilizing CNC technology, while the other is smooth and can be painted in any color. Thanks to the wedge joints, the table is foldable and is easy to transport.


MALAFOR

– is both a studio and a brand created by Agata Kulik-Pomorska

and Paweł Pomorski. They graduated from Industrial Design at the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk. Shortly after graduating from the university they decided to treat MALAFOR not only as an idea, but also as a brand, which they are currently developing. They started by designing and producing a small series of objects. In recent years they have also designed for industry, both under their own brand as well as for external companies. MALAFOR has been the winner of many international competitions and awards, including the Red Dot Award in 2012 and the IF Design Award, also in 2012. As of 2015 MALAFOR has organised workshops for students of design under the name “Obserwatorium“ (“Observatory”) where design is closely related to the natural characteristics of the site where the workshops take place. The first after-workshop exhibition was held at the Łódź Design Festival 2015. www.malafor.co

BOHDAN SZCZUDŁO

– in the years 1976–1980 he studied at the

State Higher School of Fine Arts in Gdańsk (now the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk). In 1980 he moved to West Berlin where in 1985 he graduated from the Hochschule der Künste. He was a student of Friedrich Ebert Stiftung. Until the mid-nineties he worked on the reconstruction of the Charlottenburg castle. Currently, he has his own carpentry shop where he creates furniture designs and interior design elements.

The pitcher is equipped with a wooden stirrer to be used to bring out the aromas and flavors of the herbs and fruits added to a beverage. A special indentation has been formed to nest the stirrer. The set is complemented by simple hand-decorated cups and a base of solid wood. The sets are available in several decoration and color options.


2 WITAMINA D PROJEKT – Małgorzata Knobloch, Igor Wiktorowicz They founded the design studio and the proprietary brand of Witamina D Projekt at the beginning of 2013. As function of the studio they undertake competitions and implement projects for special orders. Their key achievements include: first place in the competition for urban furniture for Gdańsk; an honorable mention in a competition for a radiator inspired by the SLOW theme – Terma Design 2014, a design for the main exhibition of Gdynia Design Days 2015. Under their brand they produce furniture and other objects designed for the home and garden. Their designs are characterized by quality, craftsmanship, local identity, simplicity and timeless forms. They work with local contractors, but quite often they personally refine their products. They prefer to work with solid wood, which they combine with other materials, while searching for new solutions. www.witaminadprojekt.pl

KAROL ELAS NECEL

– he comes from the Necel family.

He continues a centuries-old family tradition of pottery making. He began acquiring his profession at an early age, alongside his uncle Ryszard Necel. In his work he hones the traditional shapes and patterns of the Necel style. He has performed this profession for nearly a quarter of a century. Together with his brother, he is a guide in the Museum of Kashubian Pottery of the Necel Family. www.necel.pl

The table top is a ceramic bowl thrown on a potter’s wheel, and is unique in its form, color, texture and pattern. The three delicate warps (deformations) on its edges are hand shaped in a likeness of the spouts of traditional pots. They form the points of contact with the wooden structure. These two seemingly different values bond the objects while maintaining their distinctness. The ceramic bowl can be easily removed from the structure and the wooden legs can be folded flat. The table comes in three sizes, in several options of decoration and coloring.

Two contrasting materials – the fragile porcelain, dyed in the mass, is juxtaposed with the exceptional brutality of the second material, steel, forming a herbarium with a handle. Blacksmith steel processing requires great strength, fire and precision. By rhythmically beating it, the material obtains plasticity to finally capture the final form. It is an extraordinary process which results in unique surfaces. At the same time, what is required to forge steel can easily destroy porcelain and that is why this combination seems both unreasonable and at the same time so interesting.

The fragile, colored porcelain has been manually prepared. By firing within a precise temperature range, the ceramics maintain their porosity and minimum permeability to ensure better plant growth conditions. The neutral gray coloration perfectly fits the green herbs and the gleaming dark ironwork, reminiscent of Gdynia’s concrete quays. Kãpa is a Kashubian word for clump. A plateau cut from the sea which creates the Baltic cliffs; we can treat it as a reference to the coastal clumps of herbs and grasses.

WOJCIECH MIERZWA –

Wojciech is an industrial designer

who graduated from the Design Institute of the Koszalin University of Technology and The Seinäjoki University of Applied Sciences. He works on the level of concepts, design, construction and implementation. He leads the design and construction studio Metafor, which functions as an external R+D department for manufacturing companies. The studio was created to take an active part in creating a new, more functional and aesthetic reality. Additionally, he designs furniture under the same brand.

LESZEK SUPIŃSKI – an artist blacksmith, known as the Smith from Oliwa, he has been working in Gdańsk Oliwa since 1994. Since 2012 he has held the title of Master Blacksmith. He has won many blacksmithing tournaments in this country and abroad. In his work he combines both modern and old techniques, passed down from generation to generation. He works both on personal as well as commissioned projects, successfully creating projects for foreign customers. Many of his works can be found while walking around Gdańsk, on the streets, in places of worship and in homes. After hours, in the comfort of the forge’s furnace he polishes his technique of forging melee weapons.

DOMINIKA KAFEMAN

The diamond pattern was the basis for the design of the pillows and the tablecloth. The pattern has been successfully used for many centuries in weaving, with various color combinations. In this case, the design has been selected in such a manner as to complement the interior. The warp is made out of flax fiber, which in contrast to other materials does not degrade with successive washes. On the contrary, it becomes softer and more pleasant to the touch. The fabrics are hand-woven on a four-harness loom. The pillows are filled with a mixture of goose and duck feathers.


PAULINA RYŃ

– graduated from the Faculty of

Architecture and Urbanism of the Gdańsk University of Technology. Since 2008, together with Jacek Ryń, she cocreates the Grupa Projektowa Razy2. She has designed and personally creates the Cocoon lamps shown and sold in many European countries. In 2014, together with Jacek Ryń, she was the curator and the designer of the exhibition “Smak Przedmiotu” (Taste of an object), presenting the achievements of Pomeranian designers. She is the creator of the Woolendorf brand. To learn more about the specifics of producing fabrics she had studied manual spinning in the Kashubian region under the guidance of Elżbieta Reglińska. www.woolendorf.com

DOMINIKA KAFEMAN – she is passionate about weaving and the historical reconstruction of Middle Ages Using natural materials while doing so, she reconstructs fabrics on the basis of their fragments. She is keeping the forgotten methods of weaving and spinning alive. On her blog she promotes and sustains the knowledge of traditional weaving. VITEK I VITKA // BOWL & BASKET WOVEN WICKER, BLOWN AND THERMOFORMED GLASS DESIGNER:

For the author, basketry is a symbol of a wise use of natural resources. The concept of a basket for collecting the leaves and flowers of herbs and the various other fruits of the undergrowth appeared in Kashubia, where each piece of fertile land is respected. While harvesting, it is good to have free hands and this is why the basket has a strap which allows it to be belted around the waist.

AGNIESZKA BAR – graduated from the Faculty of Ceramics and Glass at the Academy of Fine Arts in Wrocław, and she has studied applied arts at the School of Arts and Design in Bratislava and at the Technical University in Liberec. She works at her alma mater undertaking research projects and teaching at the 1st Glass Design Studio in the Department of Glass. She specializes in glass as a material and designs small batches of everyday objects, tableware and unique reflective objects, for private and public spaces. She creates experimental projects in cooperation with craftsmen and glaziers from Poland and from abroad. She is the winner of numerous awards and nominations to include make me!, Tiffany Glass Kunst, European Glass Experience, Dobry Wzór, MUST HAVE and EDIDA. KASZUBSKI DOM RĘKODZIEŁA LUDOWEGO – a regional chamber with an exhibition of traditional equipment and tools once used by the Kashubians operates in a charming village on the border of southern Kashubia. One can look at and buy products from the local artisans, as well as take part in art workshops and learn regional techniques (eg. basketry and bread baking). Numerous exhibitions of paintings, photographs and sculptures by Kashubian artists are held here. The place serves as a cultural center not only for the citizens but is also dynamically involved in the promotion of the region among visitors. www.swornegacie.pl

MANUBA COLLECTION GDD 2017 ALICJA WIANCEKA – Is an industrial designer and design manager. She graduated from the Faculty of Architecture and Design at the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk. She also studied at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera in Milan, where she started her career in the Italian design industry.

Since 2016 has been running a design studio, Use as Intended. She has worked for, among others, Vitsoe London, Reserved and Malafor and continues her cooperation with maradDesign design studio in Gdynia. She designs in the Design Thinking methodology. Her areas of particular interest include managing the implementation of items for production and working in interdisciplinary design teams.

HUK // PLATTER, POT STAND, CANDLESTICK

ARTISTIC BLACKSMITHING IN STEEL DESIGNER:

STANISĹ AW CZARNOCKI CRAFTSMEN : KOWALE LOSU

Huk is a set of items showing the craftsmanship of blacksmithing. The platter shows the contrast as the smoothness, purity and simplicity of its form meets with an irregular and turbulent structure. It is also an idea to emphasize and appreciate the work of blacksmiths, where strong, heavy movements can create a plastic, even sculptural structure.


The candlestick is made on the basis of the ancient technique of the so-called grommet (punching), ie. connecting elements without welding. The fragment of a circular rod is flattened into a rectangular mold and then a hole for the candle is made by using a punch. By this process the material is “pushed” to the sides, resulting in a thickening around the central part of the candlestick. The pot stand presents the universality of steel which in combination with the remarkable ability of the blacksmith gives unlimited possibilities of modeling and shaping. In the manufacturing process, the square rod is forged into the desired triangular shape which is then folded into an elliptical or circular shape.

STANISŁAW CZARNOCKI – graduated in 2013 from the Faculty of Design at the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts and in 2015 he graduated from the prestigious Ecal (Ecole cantonale d’art de Lausanne) with a Master’s degree in Product Design. After graduation he has worked in Sweden for IKEA. Currently he is developing his own design studio, Umiar, in Warsaw. Among others, he works with Menu AS, Axor, Camper, Scott, Ercol and Ikea. In recent years his work couldmight have been seen at Salone del Mobile in Milan, Maison & Objet in Paris and the Design Festival in London. The simple, yet elegant solutions, the reduction of the unnecessary “excess” in the belief that unpretentiousness, straightforwardness, subtlety and functionality are the highest values, are some of the core characteristics of Stanisław’s projects. www.umiar.com

BLACKSMITHS OF DESTINY – Wiesław Górski and Jerzy Kamiński form the Kowale Losu. Wiesław and Jerzy, the successors of an artistic smithy which has operated since 1921, are great enthusiasts and two of the few remaining masters of their profession. They forge everything by themselves without using ready-made elements from stamps. Every detail, every bend and twist is done manually on the anvil. In ths era of serial production, such an approach is quite unique. They love metal. Heavy and hard – in their hands can transform into light forms. www.kowalelosu.pl

BEE ŚWIECE // BEESWAX CANDLES BEEKEEPING, BEESWAX, COTTON, NATURAL PIGMENTS DESIGNER :

The candles are made from 100% bee wax with the oldest and most traditional manufacturing technique – the handdipping method (repeatedly dipping a weighted wick in melted wax). No mold is needed for their production since the shape forms layer after layer.


The creation method of the Bee Świece candles resembles the formation of a coastline by sea waves or the wind. The effect is highlighted by color. The candles are dyed with natural pigments and their wicks are woven from the highest quality unbleached cotton. Unlike paraffin candles they do not produce toxins or harmful substances.

NATASZA GRZEŚKIEWICZ –

Natasza is an ASP (Academy of

Fine Arts) graduate. She has also studied at the ESAD Design School in Porto. Prior to graduation she left for an internship at the Tjep design studio in Amsterdam, where she had first encountered ceramic making techniques. It was there that she came up with the idea for her master’s thesis. Her diploma, a porcelain service, was the culmination of the three month residency at the EKWC Ceramics Center in the Netherlands. The project won the Rosenthal Award “for creativity and innovation”, which resulted in exhibitions in Hong Kong, London, Berlin, France and Poland, during many design events.

JACEK I IWONA KRZYSZTOF

– Jacek and Iwona have a breeding

apiary where they breed and inseminate bees. They have created a new bee subspecies called KASZUBKA. Bees are their passion. They conduct educational activities related to bee-keeping and bee products (honey, wax, propolis, bee pollen, royal jelly). As breeders they have their own website and sell queen bees.

KAROLINA NAVUS WYSOCKA

The natural way to store bread is to wrap it in a cloth. The Whole grain is a set: a basket for bread and a cutting board. The set, which was made in an upholstery workshop allows you to meet several needs: from storing the bread through slicing to displaying it on the table. The form is designed so that the seams serve as hinges. This allows the fabric to be curled, which changes its function. It is finished with a traditional hand-seam which makes the product unique.

is a reference to the sewing of soft material and woodwork, which are characteristic of upholstery.


KAROLINA NAVUS WYSOCKA

– she graduated in Design

from the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk. She also has a vocational education as an upholsterer. Since 2015 she has been associated with the maradDesign design group, where she creates graphic designs. Her designs have been exhibited at major European design festivals and galleries around the world. In design, she is interested in the boundaries between the „ready” product and what the users contribute to its form and function. She strives to find simple, harmonious and sometimes surprising solutions which give the user the ability to interact with the design.

HENRYK GAŃSKI – is an upholsterer with more than 30 years of experience working at the Econ upholstery factory in Kościerzyna. More than 50 students have learned the secrets of the profession in his studio. He works with the most demanding, vintage furniture, into which he breathes new life. He is one of the few specialists in Pomerania who uses traditional upholstery techniques in his work to achieve exceptional results and to faithfully preserve the spirit of historic couches and armchairs. www.econ.org.pl
