HOW TO LIFT CORRECTLY

1

PLAN

Think before you lift, consider the following:

• Where is the load going to be placed What is my route and is it flat and clear • from obstacles? • Will help be needed with the load? there equipment you could use that • Iscould help with the lift? • Ensure the correct PPE is being worn 2

POSTURE

Adopt a stable position, keep your feet • apart with one leg slightly forward to maintain balance (alongside the load, if it's on the ground)

Keep your spine straight and your • shoulders level Bend from the knees and do not lean • over the load A slight bending of the back, hips and • knees is better than fully bending the back or squatting

3

GRIP

• Using both hands Ensure the grip on the load is secure • and will not slip • Use any handholds provided 4 LIFT

Relax, look ahead and lift the load • smoothly and progressively • Do not snatch or jerk the body Use the power of the legs to lift and • not the back Keep the load close to the body to reduce • pressure on the back Be aware of unbalanced loads, keeping the • heaviest side of the load closest to the body • Do not stretch, twist or turn Turning by moving your feet is better than • twisting and lifting at the same time. Put the

load down and adjust if turning is necessary.
