Boost your home’s first impression

Lights at night are a must.

As most potential buyers will drive by a listing after work, setting your house apart is important. Don’t go crazy and install a completely new lighting system, moderation is important. Lights that face downward and highlight the edge of the path allow your guests easy access and help make your front yard a safer space. Aim for a welcoming glow and not an airplane runway when installing them, especially if you have a long front walk. Use some new solar spotlights to highlight your favourite house features — and don’t forget to point one at the “for sale” sign!

Choose containers over plant beds to add colour to the front yard.

I never want anyone to think that having plants is a bad idea. Homes with healthy plants and flowers are considered more welcoming to a buyer. However, you never want a buyer to think that the yard is high maintenance. Plant sparingly because not everyone has a green thumb. Instead, use containers to bring plants that are in bloom to the front door, maximizing the visual interest of the space.

Consider a new paint job.

Paint is great for freshening up your home and also for adding a new a colour scheme that highlights the house’s character. One of the easiest and least expensive ways to get instant curb appeal is through great colours. But, what colours should you chose? I’ve seen many different colours used successfully, even in combinations that would surprise you. The way that I choose paint colours is to take a bunch of paint chips, stand outside, and try to find complementary colours in things around the home: like trees, other houses, or even in the rocks.

C H E RY L TO R R E N U E VA Listing all the television shows that Canadian interior design guru Cheryl Torrenueva has appeared on is a bit like listing paint choices for a room: it can get overwhelming. From Colin and Justin’s Home Heist and The Rachel Ray Show to Restaurant Impossible, Home to Go, Rooms that Rock and Disaster DIY, Torrenueva has seen every shade of the décor game. But it’s this variety and eclectic nature of the industry that Torrenueva loves to bits.

“E

verything is always a new challenge,” she says, “no project is ever the same, you get to meet interesting characters along the way with various opinions of course, and it’s all a really fun time.” Everything started a little over a decade ago, when Torrenueva completed her Bachelor’s of Interior

Design from Ryerson University. Choosing to take the academic route into the industry through the Toronto school, Torrenueva said her instructors and professors were good at managing expectations. They ensured that one thing was clear: making it in the cutthroat world of interior design is not easy. “In terms of what they teach you as a budding designer, they teach you that you’re going to be a junior designer. And then after a lot of hard work, one day you’ll be a senior designer and one day you’ll own your own firm.” However, Torrenueva apparently had other plans, aiming her rocketship for the stratosphere. On a whim, she tried out for HGTV’s Superstar Challenge, and ended up making it all the way to the finals. Since then, she’s been busy jam-

packing her resume full, like a cart at IKEA headed for the checkout. As a result of the show, famed interior design personalities and Scottish couple Colin McAllister and Justin Ryan (check out a profile on them in this magazine on page 31) handpicked Torrenueva to be the on-camera design manager for their own design show, Colin and Justin’s Home Heist. Looking back on it now, Torrenueva says she had no idea this would be her career path coming out of Ryerson, but she’s most definitely not complaining. “This has kind of been just a really fun trip, the gravy on top. With everything that’s happened I feel very blessed and lucky having been able to have this opportunity to work in television.”

hether you’re looking for a natural pick-me-up, or a shot of character right in the arm, simply find yourself a TV show featuring Colin McAllister and Justin Ryan. The two Scottish interior designers, who are also a couple (and have been for almost 30 years!) have been delivering buckets of zip, pizzazz and all around hilarity for close to two decades onscreen. Since their breakout role in the Million Pound Property Experiment on BBC Two in the United Kingdom back in 2003 (and having cemented themselves back home years before that on other TV shows), they’ve made a name for themselves as interior designing masterminds. Now they’ve conquered the world, with a home base in Toronto and with shows airing all over Canada and Australia to boot.

People have lost their way in their houses and they don’t know where to start, and they have what we call analysis paralysis.” However, one place the two have definitely not experienced debilitating home renovations symptoms is in Glasgow, Scotland, where they built their dream home in their native land. It’s an 8,000 square foot monolith of a structure.

“We picked her up as a down and broken grand ol’ Georgian lady,” said McAllister. “And she was beginning to fall apart, her bones were rickety, her skin was pretty crap so we’ve refurbished her and given her pride back. And she now stands tall and proud again in Glasgow, a beacon of Georgian architecture in modern skin.”
