hOw do yOu know? How do you know he is…the one? You may have been asked this question by your parents, your friends, even yourself. The answer isn’t always perfectly clear; he may or may not be ‘ideal’ on paper; you may have known him for only two months or perhaps you’ve been hanging in there a good five years; he may be a cowboy while you were visualizing a business man. The so-called ‘signs’ aren’t always there, but somehow, you just know. At Ceremony, we feel the same way about our Great List of vendors that we recommend. We take this vendor collective very seriously, which is why we don’t put arbitrary consideration requirements in an antiquated form. We don’t have a scholastic checklist to help us come up with an ‘A’ grade. We don’t even have a job application type form to fill out. You see, when it comes to choosing our Great List of recommended vendors, we believe there is no specific formula for choosing who we invite to join our family. Probably not unlike you, we take a look-see at Facebook, we inquire with their friends and colleagues and, most importantly, we get to know them by social networking the old-fashioned way (in person). In the end, we go with our gut. We just…know. You will find that some of these recommended vendors have refined their businesses over the past twenty years, while others bring fresh ideas after having recently started their own businesses. Many of our recommended venues are on the AAA Five-Diamond Resort list; others include charming private estates and everything in between. What they all have in common is that we have a mutual respect for each other; we each genuinely want to see the other succeed; we envision a future together. MAGNIFICENT. That is the word Ines Di Santo repeated over and over again to describe the brand new home of Lovella Bridal. On the eve of their big day, the ribbon cutting and grand opening celebration, magnificence was in extreme overdrive. What culminated in the past eight months was a lifelong dream come true for the ladies of Lovella. It always starts with a vision. Like the glamorous designs of Ines Di Santo gowns, sketched by hand moments after she’s dreamed them up in her mind, was the enchantment of the new salon’s arrival.

When Angie Kalayjian, owner of Lovella Bridal, first saw the raw space, located at 224 S. Brand Blvd., she instantly envisioned it’s potential. Angie just had that feeling, like butterflies after a first kiss, that she had found the one.

Of course, she called in her friends, just for their thoughts. First was Edgardo Bonilla, Puerto Rico’s famed bridal gown designer. He just happened to be in the Los Angeles area for a trunk show, so Angie asked if he could make a 7 AM viewing before his flight left for the east coast. Naturally he rushed right over. “I could feel the energy the moment I walked through the door,” reveals Edgardo. “And now look, it’s the highest luxury bridal store in all of Los Angeles.”

Next was Jorge Manuel, “the architect of design,” as Angie describes him. The moment he saw the original space, he immediately put the vision on paper, creating what would become the reception desk and floor plan. Who knew this darling young Cuban-American designer from Miami was also a master craftsman. It runs in the family. His father spent countless hours working on the build to make the boutique come to life.
INTERVIEW WITH INES DI SANTO When did you know you were meant to be a designer? I always loved playing with dolls and I had a baby sister, Angela. When she was about nine months old, I set her on top of some material and cut around her. I was seven at the time. And yes, I made her an outfit. Why design bridal gowns? This is my hobby, not my work. I love it. I want to make dreams come true. As a designer, the day of the wedding is the most important in one’s life. A bride should live it like she’s on the red carpet.
“This space was meant for a bride to feel at home,” explains Jorge, referring to the store’s luxurious layout, which includes built-in display “closets” and divided sections that showcase featured designers. “When you shop in your own closet, you’ll find something you love. You come to Lovella to have that exact experience.” Veronica Di Santo, Ines’s daughter, and Maria Elena of Maria Elena Headpieces both visited the site shortly thereafter and shared similar inspirations for the salon. Ines is especially thrilled for the new Lovella Bridal location, as half of the store is dedicated exclusively to her collections. “We go back more than 10 years, “ says Ines. “I first met Angie and Isabel at my show in New York City. They loved the gowns and I fell in love with them. They said, ‘one day, we will have your collection in our store,’ and here we are.” This mutual admiration and respect amongst the ladies of Lovella and these incredible designers proves how important relationships can be. And at the end of the day, isn’t that what the wedding celebration is all about…LOVE.
Five words that describe your 2014 collection? Soft, romantic, edgy, glamorous, sexy. What inspired the current line? The Gardens of Paris. French lace, flowering flowers, leaves, and lots of color. Advice to brides on finding THE DRESS? The gown is PERSONALITY. It should suit you and be a reflection of who you are and the way you want to look. It should also enhance your figure. You don’t want to see a different person in your pictures. Those go beyond and become a part of your history. Who is your favorite fashion designer? Christian Dior inspires me for draping and Versace for color. Versace uses the most difficult colors and creates true beauty. What should a bride remember on her wedding day? To be happy and enjoy every moment as it goes by so fast. It may only be one day you’re in that gown but it’s for the rest of your life. Final thoughts? Love is the most important thing. Love the person, Love the dress. I wish Lovella Bridal, this magnificent store, all the best!

As an event planner, I insist on getting into the budget trenches right from the start, with the very first complimentary consultation. Each bride comes to us with a questionnaire completed so that we can begin evaluating her initial vision. We then pull out “closed files” based on their specs, guest count, location, bridal party size, etc., and determine if their vision is similar to past events, and what kind of costs they might incur. There are traditional and etiquette guidelines that some follow, where the bride’s family pays for the ceremony, reception, wedding gown and all the vendors involved with that guest experience. The groom’s family has traditionally paid for the rehearsal dinner, flowers and sometimes the expenses that occur with out of town family travel. Modern couples, however, typically pool their resources to pay for their wedding sometimes equally, or a combination of the couple’s families and the couple themselves. With the median age of brides now 29, many couples are well in to their careers and earning good money and don’t have the dated expectation of mom and dad covering the entire wedding. Sadly, statistics show that most newly married couples will acquire within five to seven years the same lifestyle of their parents that took 30 years to build. Also sobering is the fact that the combined national average income per couple is $47K per year. Altogether it is creating a generation that is starting their new lives…wedding poor. Establishing a realistic financial plan, or a “financial blueprint,” should be determined before getting too deep into the planning journey. It’s important to use local statistics for projections, as the cost of a wedding in Southern California is completely different than in Kansas.

The Budget Be honest about a bottom line budget, if the bottom line is $65K, then work your line items based on that $65K. Guest List Determine how many people you plan to attend. If it’s 150, then you have approximately $433.33 per person to spend. Venue & Catering Plug in the big number of your catering and location, or food and beverage with tax, service charge and gratuity. That could be $32K of your $65K right there. Photographer A range of $3800 to $5800 seems to be the sweet spot right now. Video Depending if you want an MTV style video or a simple documentary of your day, $1500 to $2000 is a good projection. Music This can really kick your budget out of whack. A DJ can range from $1200 to $2500 for four hours, while a band can start at $3500 to $15000 for a 5-7 piece band for four hours. Bakery $7 to $9 per person is a good formula. Clergy Expect to pay $400 to $700, depending on whether they attend rehearsal.

In the end, be honest with yourself, your fiancée and families. The last thing anyone wants to do is be wedding poor when you are just starting your lives together. Remember, a wedding is an expression of your life together as a married couple, so should your wedding budget. Be creative, be willing to bend, and even anticipate giving up some things in the journey that really don’t mean anything in 20 years. There are no rules, only choices! Stationery A solid formula is to project the cost around sets. If you have 150 people, you may have only 75 sets. To get a decent save-the-date, formal invitation, RSVP card and escort cards, estimate minimum $25 per set plus postage. Décor This is the big monster that everyone is afraid of, because you’re never quite sure where this trail might lead you. Start with the basics. Dance Floor Can you utilize the in-house option? Otherwise, a seamless dance floor runs $700 to $3500. Chairs Again, always look at the included in-house option first. There is a wide range of chairs and chair covers for rent that range from under $3 to $15. Linens Options are endless and range from $18 to $80 per table linen. Flowers This is where it can get super tricky. Always explore a florist that may have your vase, trees or décor option in their existing arsenal. There will be a lot less cost passed on to you if they don’t have to sub-rent a portion or all the items. A good coordinator knows her florists’ styles and even their inventory, and can help guide a client to someone who can not only deliver creatively but financially. A basic formula of $45 per person could be used to establish a base line budget. Of course, the types of flowers and whether they are in season will impact that number. If you are drawn to exotics like orchids instead of roses, there may be a higher initial projection than this baseline formula. Rentals If considering lounge furniture, hedging, kitchen needs, etc. consider shopping around to compare these items to see who might offer your style of items at the best price. Lighting Lighting is the “insurance policy” for your flowers. There are two popular lighting techniques. Pin spots illuminate the centerpieces, and run $12 to $25 each, while up lights enhance architectural features of a space and are typically $18 to $35, both depending on the watts and gels to create color in that space. Many couples opt for a “gobo” that is created from a signature monogram or initials, and is projected on the dance floor or wall, and can range from $125 to $250 for a custom one. Hair and Makeup Expect to pay $250 to $450 for the bride only. Photo Booth This can vary greatly from $500 to $2500 for a four-hour block. Candy Bar Four to six elements can range from $500 to $900. Cigar Roller Estimate $600 for 60 pieces. Coordinator Last but not least, like most everything, you get what you pay for. A solid “day of” coordinator will start at $2000. A medium to full-service package can range from $2500 to $10000, depending on the type of services you want. A good coordinator should be worth their weight in gold by saving you money with their savvy negotiating skills, by the money you save in time, and by providing the assurance of a good night’s sleep.

Quality Inspect the wedding car in person before booking it. Many cars don’t look nearly as nice in person as they do on web sites. A vintage wedding car should always be mechanically safe and sound. For bridal showers, we love to keep things light and fun, so our favorite concept is brunch. We include sweet and savory favorites, along with a mandatory build-your-own bellini bar. For rehearsal dinners, we love different chef-attended food stations, from a beef carving station, to an alternative taco bar, to a sweet and savory crepe station.

What is the most mouthwatering catering menu you created this year? We absolutely love summer berries, and were delighted to create a menu, both sweet and savory around this theme. From berry tarts, crepes, and macarons, to berry sauces and pairings with cheese. The vibrant colors of the food coordinated beautifully with the berry tones in the décor and flowers.
What is your most unique amuse-bouche? Baklava chicken lollipops with honey and pistachio.

The silence of a lazy office day was broken in a wave of urgent puppy hysteria well before the knock on my door. Cooper’s favorite Fed Ex driver was standing at the doorstep holding two dog treats. I was just the superfluous presence that accepted the overstuffed package and Cooper escorted the driver back out to his truck. Do you remember the television show “Mission Impossible”? Each episode began in an iconic way with a similar package being delivered and once the assignment inside had been read, the package would self destroy itself leading to the shows theme song. Despite my best attempts, I still haven’t scored a theme song and my package will only ‘self destruct’ once Cooper hears the bubble wrap pop. Other than that, it’s just like the show. I laid the envelope down on the office floor and just savored that brief moment before the dog returned. I can only imagine the joy a parent feels as their baby lies down to nap. Once the coffee table is removed and the carpet a map of the showroom floor. La Tavola Linens was introducing their new line of rental linens and I studied each linen sample as if I was a psychic reading into someone’s palm. Every linen swatch is paired with the photographs of the table accoutrement that La Tavola envisions for each display. I love to arrange everything on the

floor just as the showroom will be configured and take in the mosaic slowly… allowing every nuance to incubate organically in my mind. Like a fine wine, I allow each linen swatch to breathe before I take the first taste. I love to feel the colors as texture and the prints as canvasses. Flowers, textures and color become a mélange passing through my inner eye and as I created each individual table’s floral menu, my first inclination was to allow the linen to make its statement. My process for convention work is the same as the process I employ to wedding requests. Usually, an introductory wedding email and the corresponding “inspiration” images have the same effect as the La Tavola delivery. I open the bride’s attachments and breathe in her imagery slowly. Every bride has a unique signature and it is my privilege to extract that continuity from her inspirations. Even after the communication with a bride heats up, I slow everything down occasionally to drink in the big picture of each event. Weddings should reflect the bride’s personal aesthetic and it is one of the only processes in life that demand my patience. That patience allows every aspect of a wedding an immaculate focus… there are no short cuts to perfection. I’ve found that complexity often concludes with perfect simplicity. Conceptually, event design is a dynamic medium that always allows for change. Often, the changes present themselves as imperatives only to succumb to more alterations and fine-tuning. Eventually, the story is never completely told until the reception space is ready to enter. I love putting the finishing touch on a well thought out ‘plan.’ Just as a bridal bouquet should accentuate the wedding gown, spectacular flowers highlight gorgeous linens. Everything must work in perfect concert and when all elements are applied diligently, the bride’s signature appears as easily as her smile as she graces her reception for her reveal. That magical moment is why I design.

LOVE STORY Both Stacy and Jason love hiking in Northern California, so when Jason proposed he took Stacy to Muir Woods where they walked among the gigantic redwood trees. Jason had intended to ask Stacy to marry him on one of the bridges crossing a stream, but they were all crowded with tourists. LOVE STORY This Southern California surfer boy first laid eyes upon our niece and nanny, a small-town farm girl from Illinois, while both were studying for college exams at a local Barnes & Noble. He knew immediately that there would be more study dates in their future. He couldn’t have imagined, however, that five years later he would be marrying her amongst the very evergreens that she had planted with her father and cousin when she was a young girl. Friends and family labored for months preparing the farm for the special event: a corn field was cleared; truckloads of mulch artfully laid; a trellis and dance floor built; twinkling lights strung; wooden signs skillfully carved; plants and fountains abundantly placed; a massive white tent, rentals, a canoe for drinks and even restrooms were brought in; and finally, a parking lot masterfully constructed. On the big day, the bar was set, a cheese vignette created, hay bail seating placed, cocktails hand made, hair styles fashioned, floral arrangements sculpted, images beautifully captured - all by the artful and tireless hands of dozens of friends and family members. It was a scene of community, kindness and togetherness: the exact characteristics of Sam and Matt, a service dog trainer and an Air Force recruiter. Welcome to our family, Matt.
