publisher's letter

When we created and introduced the inaugural edition of Ceremony Magazine 12 years ago, we did so with two mantras in mind: weddings are visual, so photography is key; and collaborate with the highest quality vendors and the magazine will follow suit. Those principles still reign true today. Ceremony Magazine has always been big on pictures and short on words, and it seems social media is emulating the same. With the likes of Pinterest and Instagram becoming the go-to social media sites, the whole world can now communicate in a language that has no barriers: pictures. Now more than ever, it’s the perfect complementary platform to view the best-of-the-best of Ceremony’s thousands of timeless inspirational wedding and photo shoot images. We hope you will follow us and find inspiration for your own wedding. While we revel in the limitless amount of ideas we can digitally find, we know that the most beautiful image is no substitute for finding quality vendors who can execute your vision. That is why we indulge in the pure Wedding IngenuityTM from Ceremony’s own family of wedding professionals that are right here in Los Angeles and Santa Barbara. This Great List of wedding vendors contains not only many of the best in the Los Angeles and Santa Barbara areas, but also some of the finest in the country. It is their work that makes up a large part of this magazine, including 36 real weddings in this issue alone. Throughout the entire magazine, their web addresses are listed alongside their work as a helpful tool when you are flipping through Ceremony Magazine online. We are excited for what we know you are about to experience: meeting, collaborating with and perhaps even befriending some of the most creatively talented people you will ever know. As you travel along your wedding planning journey, preparing for life’s wondrous path of marriage and love, we encourage you to put extra special thought into the most significant aspect of the wedding celebration — the

Jim’s passion for weddings is evident in your first meeting with him. Brides love his relaxed style and easy going personality. Building a relationship with his couples prior to the wedding day is very important to him; he feels this is the key in capturing the personalities of the couple on their wedding day. Jim’s goal: to provide the images that will help relive all of the special moments and emotion that make up the wedding day for years to come. Jim takes pride in the fact that most of his business is based on referrals from brides, wedding coordinators and venue managers.

Capturing the chemistry and love of every couple we photograph with a modern, elegant and impactful style is what we do. Our easygoing, unobtrusive approach makes the experience fun, allowing everyone to relax and have a great time. Weddings are about love, beauty and celebration. We photograph every cherished moment, and later work with our couples to create a beautiful wedding album that will be treasured for generations. Our devotion to detail and personal customer service limits the number of weddings we photograph each year. We feel honored to be a part of one of the most important days in a couple’s life.

Hi there! I’m Becca and I have the best job on the planet. I’m a natural light photographer who specializes in capturing stunning imagery that evokes true emotion. I’m known for my simple, romantic style and my awesome blog sneak peeks! My heart beats for true love, wedding cake, and the hundreds of tiny details that go into creating your perfect day. Nothing is overlooked, and you’ll be able to relive your day over and over in moments and details you might not have even noticed as they were happening. That’s where I come in. I’d love to meet you and hear more about your amazing plans!

Jessica Elizabeth is a full-service wedding photography and cinematography studio founded in 2008 by husband and wife duo, Jessica & Robert. Today the studio has grown to include a team of talented photographers and cinematographers who are passionate about our work and the clients that we serve. At our core, we are storytellers. Our photographic and cinematic philosophy balances contemporary with traditional, where fashion, fine art, photojournalism, and vintage appeal come together in perfect harmony.

I invite you to a personal photography session with me; it will change the way you see yourself. Sophia Loren said, “Nothing makes a woman more beautiful than the belief she is beautiful.” At Simpson Portraits, we specialize in beauty photography, including bridal couture, mother/ daughter/ sister sessions, magazine-style portraits, and elegant bridal boudoir.

Whimsie Photo + Video

Sadi is a hopeless romantic at heart, and that romance has blossomed into a love affair with photography. You can feel in her images the emotion of every moment captured. Her focus throughout the day is to document every last detail, combining both posed and candid moments for a complete memento of the day. Brides and grooms are always taken aback at the feelings captured in her still imagery. She maintains a specialized company geared towards providing high end whimsical wedding photography and videography. The Whimsie team has been praised time and again for their customer service, professionalism and high end wedding products. The passion behind the photographs stands out above others and brings the wedding day to life.

Herman Au Photography Herman is a unique talent and a seasoned professional. His ability to work with both still image and motion picture gives him a unique perspective. His strong photography skills and deep understanding of light sets his work apart, and it shows in the variety of styles he shoots in from his masterful use of both natural and artificial light, to his always creative composition, and his unique directing approach that make his work full of life and personality.

Michael Purdy Photography

Mike’s style is most appreciated by the bride that wants artwork; not just snapshots. It all begins with a well-planned high-fashion engagement shoot. Mike works with his clients to develop their custom style by using color swatches, mood boards and themes. The day of the wedding is well planned and his team knows when to lead the client and when to step back and capture oncein-a-lifetime moments. Whether the client is stiff or a natural with posing, Mike knows how to create an atmosphere that is fun and enjoyable so his clients feel relaxed and stay “in the moment” throughout the day. His company services all of Southern California and also specializes in destination weddings around the globe.

Brittanee Taylor Photography

When I started my photography business in 2007, I had no idea how much it would change my life. At the time, I really enjoyed taking photos; it was my escape from intense study nights at the library. For so long I thought that I wanted to become a doctor, but as fate had it, I ended up becoming a wedding photographer! It seemed as though every time I tried to take a step forward in the medical field, a photography opportunity would land in my lap, and I went for it. Becoming a full time wedding photographer is the best decision that I've ever made. When you genuinely love what you do, you really never work a day in your life! Being a part of someone's wedding day is the biggest privilege I could ever receive, and I get to do it for a living! I am such a goober for romance and love stories that I truly am happy to be in the wedding industry. Every wedding is unique just as each couple I meet.

The Argus Image It all began when I was 15. I picked up my dad’s film camera and my love affair with photography and capturing the beauty in the world around me began. I studied art and graphic design at Mount St. Mary’s University in Los Angeles and then I went to NYU to do a foreign language studies program. I had no idea that this was where I would find my inspiration. But that’s New York, a visually stirring glimpse of global diversity that spurred me to travel and take pictures. Whereas New York was my catalyst, Paris became my provocateur. It was there I learned the art of focusing on individual stories through my photography. After a nice long stint of traveling in Europe, I knew it was finally time to come home and work in Los Angeles to pursue my dream. I decided to take the plunge and start my own photography business, The Argus Image, where I've found a passion for shooting weddings. Each couple has such a unique story of who they are individually, and how they came together. I love to capture that narrative and delivering it visually so it can be enjoyed over and over again.

Erin Shimazu Photography

Erin is a professional wedding and portrait photographer from Los Angeles whose greatest photographic hope is to use art as a way to celebrate life and make people happy. She is the proud owner of her own business and has shot commercially both in the US and more recently internationally, while her work has been published both in print and online in the United States. Her first artistic passions were painting and drawing, but she fell in love with photography when she picked up her dad’s old film camera in high school. She has been shooting ever since. She has a degree in Fine Art and has studied at UCLA, Art Center, Otis College of Art and Design, and Santa Monica College. Other things that make Erin happy include: hula dancing, video games, good wine, people who are not afraid to be goofy with her, Dodger games with her Dad, and Almond Joys.

Introduce your guests to your wedding by using an invite that fancies both visually and tactilely with sparkling gems, textured paper, beautiful ribbon or the always stylish letterpress. Intermix graphics and fonts then tie it all up in a slim delivery box or an elegant envelope. It’s an impression that will leave your guests wondering what other excitement awaits on the big day. how do you know? How do you know…he’s the one? You may have been asked this question by your parents, your friends, even yourself. The answer isn’t always perfectly clear; he may or may not be ‘ideal’ on paper; you may have known him for only two months or perhaps you’ve been hanging in there a good five years; he may be a cowboy while you were visualizing a business man. The so-called ‘signs’ aren’t always there, but somehow, you just know. At Ceremony, we feel the same way about our Great List of wedding professionals that we recommend and invite to join our family of advertising partners. We take this vendor collective very seriously, which is why we don’t put arbitrary consideration requirements in an antiquated form. We don’t have a scholastic checklist to help us come up with an ‘A’ grade. We don’t even have a job application type form to fill out. You see, when it comes to choosing our Great List of recommended professionals, we believe there is no specific formula for choosing who we invite to join our family. Probably not unlike you, we take a looksee at Facebook, we inquire with their friends and colleagues and, most importantly, we get to know them by social networking the old-fashioned way (in person). In the end, we go with our gut. We just… know. You will find that some of these recommended vendors have refined their businesses over the past twenty years, while others bring fresh ideas after having recently started their own businesses. Many of our recommended venues are on the AAA Five-Diamond Resort list; others include charming private estates and everything in between. Additionally, the esteemed planners on the following pages each approach weddings in their own unique way, and we have interviewed each of them in order to give you an up close and personal look at their backgrounds, their ideas, and their wedding ingenuity. We hope that you will find this varied Great List vendor collective to be helpful in finding your wedding day professionals. There is no single vendor that is perfect for everyone, but there are vendors that are perfect for you. And when you meet them, you will just know.

Coordinator Spotlight THIS IS HOW IT CAME TO BE: My first chapter was as a sales rep for a couture bridal boutique in Colorado. Then, I started working in the early 90’s under my own name, only to be detoured into entertainment where I spent the next 15 years acting, producing and writing and releasing two albums. I also had a production deal with NBC for several years and had high accountability to studio heads and was exposed to all facets of production from budget, production, legal and logistics.

MY FAMILY: I am immensely blessed to be married 25 years to the same man. I have helped to shape and mold a beautiful child who is passionate, considerate and bright. My passion is to serve people and to help solve problems. I believe in being a solution maker.

Coordinator Spotlight THIS IS HOW IT CAME TO BE: Originally, there were 4 creative women who each specialized in a different forte such as fashion, floral, graphics and organization. Bringing those talents together, they created Aquafuzion, a full service planning company that is now owned by one of the original four and employs over 20 talented individuals to create floral pieces, design custom invitations and plan exquisite weddings and events. FAMILY: The owner of the company, Debbie Liaw, has been married to Jeffrey Lam for 11 years. They are blessed with two lovely children, Jayden, age 8, and Valerie, age 5.

COLOR PALETTES: Muted, soft, and romantic colors that reflect inner beauty. Natural earth tones are prominent as well as pale greens, pastel peaches and violets.

MY DREAM WEDDING: Would be absolutely filled with overflowing natural beauty and unending details in a quaint setting with close family and special friends.

DÉCOR: Metallics are going to be huge in the wedding scene in 2016. You can incorporate them anywhere from stationery, décor and floral to vases and wedding cakes. The sparkle can instantly add a glamorous tone to your big day.

3 WORDS THAT DESCRIBE MY STYLE: Tasteful, timeless, and traditional

WEDDING MENU; A fresh, local, farm-to-table menu is still a big hit compared to the traditional wedding banquet plated menu. Opt for a menu that truly reflects you as closely as possible. For example, a raw food banquet, gluten-free 3 course meals, or even a paleo diet menu. A unique and personalized craft cocktail station is always a plus! WEDDING FAVORS: Favors that are useful and meaningful, such as ones that give to humanity or can be enjoyed at the wedding, are a great idea. WEDDING TRADITIONS: Taken from English tradition, the bride is given symbols of good luck in the shapes of horseshoes and keys from family and close friends. She then carries these tokens tied with satin ribbons down the aisle with her floral bouquet.

"The three C ’s of a lasting and loving marriage are commitment, communication and compromise. During the planning stages of your wedding, you will be able to practice these three important words in your growing relationship." 72

I FIND INSPIRATION IN: The bride and groom. Seeing and hearing the couple interact with each other and experiencing the love between them is always truly inspiring. I LOVE WEDDINGS BECAUSE: We are able to experience the expressions of love in so many beautiful stories, settings, and styles. MY FAVORITE WEDDING VENUES: The Langham Huntington, Pasadena and The London Hotel MY FAVORITE PLACE TO SHOP: The Los Angeles Flower District IF MONEY WERE NO OBJECT, I WOULD: Host a huge, fancy appreciation celebration for all our past clients and the vendors we work with on a regular basis I BELIEVE: Kindness and sincerity are the keys to open many doors THE MOST IMPORTANT THING TO ME: To love others and be loved by others MY BIGGEST PET PEEVE: Throwing trash on the ground. It’s not being considerate of those who follow behind you. MY FAVORITE HOLIDAY: Thanksgiving — I love the whole concept of being grateful and not taking life for granted. THE BEST DAY OF MY LIFE WAS: When I became a part of the growing company, Aquafuzion.

Coordinator Spotlight WE STARTED OUR BUSINESS IN: 2008

At Your Door Events

THIS IS HOW IT CAME TO BE: We became friends while working in the marketing department of a specialty children’s toy company. When the economy took a plunge in 2008, we left the company but remained friends. Talking about our dreams and what we would do next with our lives over dinner one night, we casually mentioned opening a business together. We brainstormed on the skills we both had in common and soon discovered that event planning was a passion we both had. On a scrap piece of paper we wrote the terms of our business partnership. With over 400 weddings under our belt, what was a casual conversation about our dreams turned out to be an amazing journey of a solid event planning business.

Jenny Goodman & Sara Holland

Idea Ingenuity VIDEO: Although photography continues to be a big part of a couple’s budget, we feel like more emphasis needs to be placed on videography. Still pictures are beautiful, but hearing the vows, the toasts of your friends, and seeing the facial expressions of happiness are priceless. REHEARSAL DINNER: Don’t forget to take into account the partners/spouses of your bridal party when planning the rehearsal dinner. It’s also proper etiquette (and highly recommended) to invite out of town guests to the rehearsal dinner. Take this time to graciously thank your bridal party, immediate family, and out town guests for investing in your special day! CEREMONY: More emphasis needs to go to making the ceremony extra special. Don’t be shy about personalizing it and telling your love story. Writing the vows, whether personal or traditional, in a small book that you can exchange at the altar is sweet. On your wedding anniversary, you can bring out the vows and read them back to each other as a way of celebrating what your wedding was about in the first place. COLOR PALETTES: Think calming, soft, and peaceful colors for 2016: rose quartz, peach hues, light blues, lilac, grey, and all colors that are not restricted to gender but can be playful and give the sense of serenity. FASHION: A huge percentage of wedding dresses are strapless, but in 2016 the spaghetti strap will be making a clever and practical appearance. We’re also excited to see a bold and confident bride choose a midriff-baring two-piece dress or a dress with a sexy slit! FOOD & BEVERAGE: Couples are constantly looking for creative ways of serving dinner. A trend that we’ve seen and love is when the food is served at interactive stations. Guests can choose what they want to eat plus it serves as a way of entertainment. We’ve seen an increase in more relaxed type dining instead of traditional served dinners. LOVE IT: Unique venues like restored theaters, museums, old banks and gardens

74

All in the Details WE FIND INSPIRATION IN: Fashion runways, traveling, home décor blogs, architecture magazines, photography, flea markets, popular music, movies, and nature OUR DREAM WEDDING: It would start with brunch and progress to a very romantic ceremony followed by a fun barbecue lunch with live music and lawn games. Later, guests would move to a lounge style tent for dinner and dancing. OUR DESIGN PHILOSOPHY: Your wedding day is the opportunity to tell your love story to the most important people in your life (even your unborn children)! Focus on putting a personal stamp on the design of the wedding while thinking about the guest experience. Don’t worry about what other couples are doing or what you think is the hottest trend; create a unique personal experience for your guests. a FAVORITE WEDDING WE HAVE PLANNED: We did a same sex wedding of a couple that had been together for 25 years and finally had the opportunity to legally get married. Hearing their story of all the challenges their relationship had to endure through so many years made us appreciate the right to marry even more. Not only was it the commemoration of their long history together, but it was also a celebration of justice! 3 WORDS THAT DESCRIBE OUR STYLE: Clean, modern, and functional WE LOVE WEDDINGS BECAUSE: Weddings are the only time you will have all your friends and loved ones in one room to celebrate your love story. The day goes by so fast with so many details and things to do. Our goal and job is to help the couple savor the moment a little longer. YOU’RE ENGAGED! YOU SHOULD KNOW THIS: Get ready to answer a million questions about where you’re at in the wedding planning process. Get a manicure, take a deep breath, and gently tell the happy interrogators that it’s a work in progress. OUR FAVORITE STAYCATION: Palm Spring resorts

BEAUTY: Brides are preferring natural curls with accents of flowers and jewels over up-dos.

3 WORDS THAT DESCRIBE MY STYLE: Luxury, timeless and graceful

FOOD & BEVERAGE: Fun cocktail bars are on-trend. The bride and groom can make their own cocktail to be served to the guests, like a cocktail in the form of jello served on a spoon. A nitrogen associated cocktail and ice cream bar is still popular among couples as well.

I FIND INSPIRATION IN: Traveling, art, hotels, movies and my everyday life

TRANSPORTATION: A fun shuttle service is something to consider! Couples can add customized signs/phrases like “Jane and Joe are getting hitched” and/or “New Mr. and Mrs. John Doe” to make it more personalized. Plus, this way all the guests know where to go! DESTINATION WEDDINGS: Spending a weekend with your nearest and dearest is always great, but it is especially wonderful on your wedding weekend. With the same budget as would be allotted for a local wedding, couples tend to invite less guests and offer more treats while making memories with their closest friends and family.

"Three words that describe my style are luxury, timeless and graceful." 76

THIS IS HOW IT CAME TO BE: I had a retail business providing clients with Greek baptismal and wedding accessories. This business gave me the opportunity to interact with clients that were in need of wedding assistance. My first wedding was at the Beverly Hills Hotel; I assisted a friend with her daughter’s wedding. Guests from that wedding passed on the word.

Hellenic Designs Georgia Covell

hdeventplanning.com | 800.838.7597

A LITTLE BIT ABOUT MY BACKGROUND: I attended UCLA and received a bachelor’s degree in Political Science. I worked in the import and export industry until I had my children. While at home, I opened a retail business that catered to the Greek community. This allowed me to be a stay at home mom and provided me with something to do while my children were at school. MY FAMILY: I’ve been married to a wonderful and understanding husband for 29 years. We have two boys, Matthew and James, and a plot hound that we adopted from the pound named Electra.

Idea Ingenuity CEREMONY: In church ceremonies of different ethnic backgrounds, try to incorporate some element of the other person’s cultural heritage. For example: I have a client that is Greek but marrying a Filipino. Our priest is allowing the couple to bring their priest to participate in the service. At the end of the Greek ceremony, the Filipino priest will give a blessing and celebrate some of their traditions. COLOR PALETTES: Many brides are very traditional when it comes to color palettes. It would appear that there are really no seasonal colors. Pastels are still preferred with ivory and blush pinks as big winners. DESSERT & CANDY BARS: Don’t skimp on dessert or candy if you are planning on providing guests with this experience. Make sure you have plenty and a variety. MUSIC & ENTERTAINMENT: In addition to the DJ and/or band, entertainment can add a little pizzaz to the wedding celebration. TRANSPORTATION: Don’t forget about homecoming and prom when considering a limousine. Limousine companies tend to book early and pricing during this peak season is high. BUDGET: People are always afraid to talk about his topic. A budget helps the vendor know what they can offer you. It helps in determining what you can and cannot afford, thereby finding vendors that meet your specific financial constraints.

"I love weddings because of the people that I meet, whether clients or vendors." 78

All in the Details MY DREAM WEDDING: Would be in a small church on an island with the reception overlooking the water and dancing until sunrise MY DESIGN PHILOSOPHY: Everything in moderation and keep true to the things you like A FAVORITE WEDDING THAT I HAVE PLANNED: Anita and Bani’s Assyrian wedding. They combined new and old world traditions that made their wedding an unforgettable experience for all of their guests. The groom and his family picked up the bride from her house where they announced their arrival with the traditional musical instruments of the zurna and daouli. The groom and his family (50 of them) danced in front of the bride’s house before entering the house. The groom performed a male dance with all of the groomsmen waving specially made kerchiefs (yalikhtha). The kerchiefs were handmade by the groom’s mother and given to the guests. At the wedding reception (500 people in attendance), the party continued into the late hours with a famous Assyrian singer. 3 WORDS THAT DESCRIBE MY STYLE: Elegant, clean and classy I FIND INSPIRATION IN: European cities, architecture and nature THE BEST DAY OF MY LIFE WAS: When I married my husband

YOU’RE ENGAGED! YOU SHOULD KNOW THIS: Enjoy your engagement. Time goes by so fast. Don’t get so caught up in the wedding plans that you forget to enjoy each other’s company. MY FAVORITE WEDDING VENUES: Biltmore Los Angeles, Terranea, Westlake Village Inn, Bacara Resort, Montage, Santorini and Mountaingate Country Club MY FAVORITE PLACES TO SHOP: Small boutiques, Nordstrom, Pier 1 Imports, William Sonoma, Crate and Barrel

Quite the opposite from my line of work. • I have 2 dogs who are like my kids

Idea Ingenuity COLOR PALETTES: Love, love, love French blue mixed with anything else. It’s such a classic neutral that people overlook. Europeans have been using this color since medieval times and it’s still around. FLOWERS & DÉCOR: While Pinterest is a great idea-gathering tool, tangibility helps to put things in perspective. Go to your local fabric or flower district to really touch and feel and put things together. Make your own mock up designs to help you decide what you love. DESTINATION WEDDINGS: I think more and more couples are opting to do destination weddings to keep their guest count intimate and as an opportunity to explore and travel. It’s a perfect getaway with loved ones, and those who really want to make it will go. GUEST LIST: One of the hardest parts of wedding planning is not being able to get answers or narrow your guest list. Be firm and say no to additional guests or requests if you really can’t accommodate. This will help you stay on budget. Putting assigned number of seats on your RSVP card is a great way to eliminate the question of how many are invited. WEDDING TRADITIONS: Ask family and grandparents about personal traditions or historical elements to tie into your wedding. Surprisingly, I find many of my couples know very little and rely on planners to tell them about their own culture and traditions, which makes it less personal when you can’t relate. LOVE IT: Classic, timeless and elegant elements OVER IT: Rustic, garden, boho

"I believe that being sympathetic and listening with an open heart enlightens your soul."

MY FAVORITE PLACES TO SHOP: Furniture and interior design places IF MONEY WERE NO OBJECT, I WOULD: Buy a ranch and own horses MY DESIGN PHILOSOPHY: Ambience is everything. Every little detail from lighting to the type of chairs and linens will change the tone. Mixing different types of elements is a great way to showcase personality and should be incorporated into the design to make the wedding personal. SOMETHING MOST PEOPLE DON’T KNOW ABOUT ME: I love the great outdoors (like hiking and mountain climbing) as much as I love museums and architecture and having afternoon tea. I worked for two different coordinators during college, and decided to start my own business upon graduating. Best decision I could have ever made!

Idea Ingenuity BRIDAL FASHION: Colored hairpieces with a deep blue crystal broach or a coral feather piece COLOR PALETTE: French blue. It’s such a stunning, crisp and elegant color for spring or summer weddings! FAVORS: The best favors are ones guests can enjoy right away. Treat guests to sweetly wrapped grandma’s delectable chocolate chip cookies, and include the recipe for guests to make too! HOT: Champagne bars complete with different fruit, purees, juices and flavors! NOT: Un-groomed grooms. This is your wedding day; look your best! LOVE IT: Asking your guests to go “unplugged.” Not only will your guests have a great time, they will intently listen during the ceremony, watch every moment, engage with each other and actually be a part of the festivities. Let the photographer capture every moment amazingly while your guests simply have the time of their lives. OVER IT: Mason jars

"Someone to trust. Someone who cares. A day to remember. Your wedding should be the most fabulous party of your life!" 82

All in the Details MY DESIGN PHILOSOPHY: Creating an event that is solely for the client, and that comes through relationship. I get to know each of my client’s personalities, passions and style. And through that relationship, we build on the design with our experience and expertise, creating a realistic vision by incorporating every aspect of an event, from colors and design to logistics and atmosphere. Every detail is thought out and cohesive. I FIND INSPIRATION IN: Just about anything I see. You just have to have an open mind to be influenced and inspired. YOU’RE ENGAGED! YOU SHOULD KNOW THIS: Before you start anything, get the big picture in mind. Sit down in a quiet, relaxed place. Clear your mind and focus on your dream day. Think of what you want to see, what you want to smell, and the things you want to experience. What are your priorities? Think of themes and colors. Write down keywords of what you want your wedding to be like. After you’re done and confident with your list, keep it in a safe place and refer to it often during the planning process. During the next few months, so many different options, colors and styles, and everyone competing for your attention will bombard you. Brides tend to lose focus on what they originally wanted, what they truly want. Read over your list, and almost always you’ll know what decision to make and what direction to go in. It’s a great way to clear your head and get back to focusing on what really matters. Remember, always have the end goal in mind. SOMETHING MOST PEOPLE DON’T KNOW ABOUT ME: I am involved with the Special Olympics and have a deep love for people with intellectual disabilities. MY FAVORITE HOLIDAY: Christmas

All in the Details

COLOR PALETTE: Silver, black, white and gold. It’s very classy and glamorous!

MY DESIGN PHILOSOPHY: Design every wedding around your couple. Use them as your canvas.

PHOTOGRAPHY, VIDEO & PHOTO BOOTHS: Stand out with an alter-ego photo shoot with your wedding party. Incorporate usage of a drone for your same-day edit, and make your photo booth fun and a reflection of you as a couple.

3 WORDS THAT DESCRIBE MY STYLE: Classy, stylish, and chic

TRANSPORTATION: If you have a huge wedding party, a luxury party bus is a great idea. If it’s just the bride and groom, always shoot for an old classic Rolls Royce or a modern Mercedes Maybach - classy!

I LOVE WEDDINGS BECAUSE: They're a reflection on a new journey in one’s life. I’m a stickler for new beginnings.

BUDGET: Be realistic with your budget and set your wedding details around, not beyond, it. You still have a life to live afterwards. GUEST LIST: Keep your guest list tight and reserved for your very closest and dearest family members and friends. HOT: Any type of ghost chair, whether it’s a ghost chiavari or open back chair, is very elegant. NOT: Wood dance floors should be a thing of the past

LOVE IT: Calligraphy seating charts on oversized mirrors OVER IT: Seating place cards

"I find inspiration in people, current events and things that are going on in the world today." 84

I FIND INSPIRATION IN: People, current events and things that are going on in the world today

YOU’RE ENGAGED! YOU SHOULD KNOW THIS: You should know your significant other’s favorite things by now. Incorporate those things in your wedding planning. MY FAVORITE WEDDING VENUE: Taglyan Cultural Complex in Los Angeles. Their built-in lighting system is everything! MY FAVORITE PLACE TO SHOP: Is Paper Source. It’s my go-to place for all things paper. MY CLAIM TO FAME: People know me for appearing on reality TV with some of my celebrity clients. Others know me for the event PR work I do for some of my celebrity clients. IF MONEY WERE NO OBJECT, I WOULD: Feed every homeless person living I BELIEVE: In positive karma. You are the energy you give.

SOMETHING MOST PEOPLE DON’T KNOW ABOUT ME: I’m very observant and very nosy! I must know all the details like I’m on the CSI Wedding Police Squad.

Field of Dreams

nearby destination weddings and honeymoons at rancho la puerta rancholapuerta.com

COURTESY OF RANCHO LA PUERTA

In 1940, wellness gurus Edmond and Deborah Szekely had a revelation, “If we build it, they will come.” And so began the modern fitness evolution. Rancho La Puerta became the first health spa as we know them today, and over the past 75 years they have earned a healthy resume, including the #1 ranking by Travel + Leisure as the top destination spa in the world four out of the past five years. What started out in a windowless adobe “house” amongst the vast desert fields of Baja California with a wondrous view of Mt. Kuchumaa, a mountain held sacred by Native Americans for thousands of years, is now a 3,000-acre world-renowned destination for those seeking health, fitness, relaxation, and notably romance. The Ranch is still operated by the Szekely family today and is richly ingrained in Mexico’s deep-rooted traditions of family and hospitality. Notable areas of The Ranch’s growth include the 83 sprawling casitas decorated with fine folk art and authentic Otomi textiles, La Cocina Que Canta culinary center and cooking school, an unparalleled 6-acre organic farm, a top-notch spa, several gyms, structures and pools that seamlessly blend into its exquisitely manicured acres, and lucky for you, its new offerings for weddings and special events. The options are seemingly endless for The Ranch’s truly special experiences that take you from pre “I will” to post “I Do.” Destination Wedding Weekend Rancho La Puerta is the ultimate in destination weddings! If you are looking for an intimate destination wedding with your closest family and friends, without the added time and costs for travel, the three or four night stay for you and your guests would be a perfect option. Your wedding weekend may be one of the few times in your lives where you have everyone you truly love all together in one place at one time. The Ranch’s inherent qualities help to make that experience all the more special. With its “unplugged” mantra, all-inclusive amenities, family style dinners and variety of activities offered, there is something for everyone to do and yet still be together. You and your guests can partake in the array of fitness classes available for any level (including the popular cardio drumming); attend the Salsa y Salsa event where you will not only learn to make delicious salsa, but dance it as well; enjoy an exhilarating morning hike to La Cocina Que Canta for a healthy and tasty organic breakfast; hone your cooking skills in a hands-on cooking class and delight in the fruits of your labor; luxuriate in a hot stone facial followed by a rooftop outdoor spa dip and shower; indulge in wine tasting of the surprisingly phenomenal wines from the Valle de Guadalupe with sommelier Alberto Cortez; enjoy select breakfasts poolside during the splendid, gorgeous mornings; and best of all, revel in Manuel’s dance classes for the most fun you’ve ever had exercising. Perhaps you are dreaming of a destination wedding with a larger guest list and unique weekend activity options. The less- traveled, clean and somewhat sleepy border town of Tecate and its neighboring Valle de Guadalupe beckon. Guests may choose to stay at nearby Santuario Diegueno Hotel and visit The Baja’s magnificent wine region in the days before or after. While wine touring, dinner at Finco Altozano is a must. The outdoor country setting of Tijuana Chef Javier Plascencia’s restaurant is brilliant with a menu to match. For an ultra-casual meal, the tacos at El Amigo alone are worth the trip.

KATIE GARDNER

The Wedding Day Whether you and your guests are staying at the resort or coming in for the day, the natural wedding setting is a true sanctuary. You can choose to get married and host your reception outdoors amongst the tranquil gardens with sacred mountain views, perhaps with a Mariachi band at dinner under the arbor of twinkling lights, or within the grand rancho ambiance of the tiled great room and courtyards. Either way, on-site wedding planner Maura Montoya and Chef Denise Roa will help make your wedding day a most memorable one. Chef Denise is as creative as she is talented. Of course, she reaps the fruits of their long-time gardener’s labor, but her innovation shows when she cooks and plates a radish to look like a scallop and taste as delightful. Healthy never tasted so delicious. She will cater to any allergy or dietary restrictions with finesse, and although sustainably caught seafood is magnificently prepared, it is often the organic garden-to-table produce that is the star on the plate. Honeymoons and Elopements Honeymoons aren’t only for the just-married. A pre-wedding moon allows you to de-stress and reconnect before the big day. Either way, a week at Rancho La Puerta will start your marriage off in a healthy and rejuvenating way – for both the mind and body, as well as romantically and spiritually. The unplugged life on The Ranch reminds guests to live in the moment, to seize the experience of being with our loved ones in all of nature’s beauty. There is wifi in some areas, if you are so inclined, but it is limited so that you won’t be all-consumed. Endless Experiences The opportunities are endless for events at The Ranch that give you quality time with a loved one or two, or six. Saturday at the Ranch is a great opportunity to spend a quality day with your mom or your bridesmaids. During the monthly scheduled events, guests are able to enjoy the amenities for a day, including spa time and massage, a nature hike, fitness classes and a culinary cooking experience. Like most of their guests, once you find your way to The Ranch the first time, you will return time and time again. From weddings to honeymoons, to engagement parties or a day with your maids, Rancho La Puerta is bar-none when it comes to fulfilling experiences that nourish the mind, body and soul and providing an environment for investing in each other. Getting There When people think of crossing the border, it is often assumed that means Tijuana. However, Rancho La Puerta sits just a few short miles from the clean and easy Tecate border crossing, which is only 40 miles from the San Diego Airport. You and your guests may drive across, or you may drive to the border and have resort drivers pick you up and escort you through. Another convenient option, especially for a bit larger weddings, is to arrange for Rancho La Puerta’s charter bus to transport your guests to and from the San Diego Airport or a designated San Diego hotel. Any option is extremely convenient and seamless, as Rancho La Puerta has been transporting guests for three quarters of a century. The Details Minimum 25 guests and maximum 120 guests for wedding-only packages. Minimum of 8 guests for destination wedding weekend packages at The Ranch. Elopement packages also available. Couple and all guests must have valid passport at time of travel. CEREMONYMAGAZINE.COM

A Marriage of Flavors An interview with New York Food Company newyorkfood.com

IMAGES COURTESY OF NEW YORK FOOD COMPANY

on-trend food ideas for 2016 weddings: Anything smoked: meats, chicken, pork, seafood, cheeses, and vegetables. We had a smoked mushroom, potato hash as a side to a New York strip steak recently and it was amazing. Kick off your special day with a signature cocktail that sets the party mood. And be sure you serve a variety of stationary or tray-passed, bite-size foods that includes a few unique items that guests may have never tried. That sets the tone for a fun event! favorite, creative ways to display food at stations: Chafers have gone away unless absolutely necessary. Everything when possible should be beautifully presented on a platter with appropriate, seasonal garnishes. Get creative with fresh, clean succulent clippings, large philodendron leaves, anything organic. Use your imagination! unique dessert ideas: Many of our couples are featuring three or more individual cakes instead of just one large wedding cake. This gives them more options on types of cakes, sizes, shapes, filling and frostings, and décor. Also, anything mini is popular: cookies, pies, tarts, donuts, donut holes, parfaits. a trending way to elevate the presentation of meals: One way is the plating of items on the entrée plate (preferably a large soup plate for the entrée with items stacked when possible) with starch in the center. The entrée should shine on top of the starch with vegetables on the side. Sauce should be added around the starch/ entrée before veggies are plated. 3 words that should describe a well-executed wedding meal: Fresh, delicious & creative

118

a unique flavor to incorporate to wow guests: Curry gets the NYFC team vote! For example, curried cauliflower with toasted pine nuts and fried parsley, curry vegetables as a side and curried rice with currants. our specialty is: Menus that feature an eclectic mix of traditional favorites married with current trends. We are also proud of our professional service team. We offer exquisitely served, plated meals to beautiful yet casual buffets. Every menu and every event is customized to fit the style and taste of each couple. our food philosophy: We design menus to favor the clients’ tastes, not ours. We always make it fresh and made to order, utilizing the freshest ingredients and sourcing locally as much as possible. Our menus are used to start the discussion with our clients; they aren’t meant to limit the offerings. if you could suggest three courses for a couple to serve at their wedding, what would they be? First Course (hot): seafood sampler – oysters rockefeller, scallop sardou, grilled shrimp and chimichurri salsa — champagne First Course (cold): caviar with water crackers, sour cream, grated egg and minced red onion — champagne Second Course: simple baby arugula salad with baby beets, goat cheese and a simple fresh herb vinaigrette — sauvignon blanc Entrée: roasted smashed yams with caramelized onion, topped with grilled baby lamb chops with lamb jus, and a side of sautéed garlic spinach — zinfandel

An Edible Journey An interview with 24 Carrots 24carrots.com

STUDIO EMP

our specialty is: We believe in the complete guest experience. From the minute guests arrive to your wedding, they’re attended to. Special touches come standard for us, such as a welcome beverage, bride and groom service during cocktail hour, or complimentary cake cutting. We make sure that we create an atmosphere in which people are blown away by the excellent food and the quality of service.

our food philosophy: We believe that food is a journey and we want to take you along for the ride. We offer a variety of outstanding cuisine that we all personally love and have sampled ourselves. And because everybody’s taste buds differ, we don’t limit ourselves to the standard menus. Our chefs are always up for a challenge and we’re always looking for ways to expand our culinary horizons.

on-trend food ideas for 2016 weddings: Produce is finally getting to be the star of the meal instead of just a side, and it’s one of our favorite ways to incorporate a lot of color and flavor into the dining experience. Our current favorite is the grilled butternut squash steak topped with roasted poblano and corn relish, queso fresco, and fresh coriander.

if you could suggest three courses for a couple to serve at their wedding, what would they be? Compressed watermelon salad: Pickled and compressed heirloom watermelon with balsamic reduction, basil emulsion and sea salt foam

We’re also seeing a revival of pairing menus, where we complement each dish with a cocktail or wine course (maybe even whiskey!). These are typically requested by couples who want the reception to be a truly exceptional dining experience for their guests. trending ways to elevate the presentation of meals: Couples are becoming more aware of food presentation and making it a priority when finalizing menu selections. One of the best ways to ensure a clean and classic plate is a compressed dish, such as our compressed salad of baby arugula. It’s a long standing favorite, but we’re thrilled to see it embraced often. a neat late-night wedding snack idea: A spiked coffee or hot chocolate station is always one that goes over well with guests. It can be as caffeinated (or as boozy) as you’d like!

120

Peppercorn-crusted filet mignon with café de Paris butter: Potatoes dauphinoise, broccolini with extra virgin olive oil and crushed chili flakes Decadent sea salt caramel chocolate torte: Nutella fuilletine crunch, bitter hazelnut biscuit, dark chocolate sabayon mousse, sea salt caramel cream, draped in nutella ganache, chocolate pralines and raspberry champagne reduction what is your best advice for couples looking for their perfect caterer? Firstly, take time to enjoy being engaged. It’s easy to get overwhelmed at this time that should be such a joyous occasion. Once you get an idea of your wedding wish list, call us and trust the professionals to guide you along. We get to plan weddings every single day and we want nothing but the best for your big day. After all, we’re in this together.

Jessica and Philippe met in Las Vegas through a mutual friend. Philippe proposed one evening while they were visiting Jessica’s family. She had dinner plans that night so they were having a glass of champagne on the deck beforehand (Philippe is from Paris and the French like to have an apéritif before dinner). They were just talking and he ended up getting down on one knee and proposing. It was simple and perfect.

Neola and Warren got engaged on Valentine’s day. Warren's parents were visiting. During dinner, Warren snapped at one of them for mentioning the possibility of marriage. Neola was upset, because she interpreted it as Warren not wanting to get married. When they returned home, Warren proposed. He then explained that the reaction was not because of anything except his concern that someone would give away the secret before he asked Neola.

love note

During the ceremony, the band started playing the Circle of Life song from Lion King as the wedding party began coming down the Isle. When the music started, all of the animals came over to listen. There was a one week old baby rhino frolicking with a few adult rhinos and several baby giraffe's with the adult giraffes. People asked if they somehow staged it.

Cristina and Jung met through a family friend getting to know each other via text about a week before they met. They found that they shared a similar personality and character, and when they finally did meet, they were both amazed by how much more they have in common (same religion, hobbies, etc.) They also found out that they both have a picture taken from the same place when they were kids - some kind of military exhibition back in the 80s (they had taken a picture in front of the same helicopter). They joked that maybe they were on each side of the helicopter taking the picture at the same time.

love note

One of the main events of the wedding, other than the nuptials of course, had to be the flowers. Hundreds of roses and orchids were decadently overflowing in the tall vases while shorter bouquets covered the tables. There was even one table that had a masterfully crafted centerpiece running the entire twelve person length of it.

Cheryl and Jon knew each other from elementary school but didn’t connect until after college in Chicago. He reached out to her and asked if she would shoot some photos for his company. She had always had a crush on him so it was an easy decision for her. They ended up spending the whole day together running around the city taking pictures.

Having

weddings,

Cheryl has seen a lot, so she wanted to make sure her wedding was unique. Jon was very into magic growing up so Cheryl came up with the theme of “Vintage Magic”. They had a magician strolling through the cocktail hour, the favors were decks of cards, and the table numbers were all old magic posters.

love story

Enrique and Mike got engaged after recently moving into their home in Calabasas on Valentine’s Day at their housewarming party. They invited 50 of their closest friends and family and it was the first time their families met since Enrique’s family is not local. Halfway through the party, Mike gave a toast welcoming everyone to our home and thanking them for being part of the celebration. At the end of it, he got down on one knee and asked Enrique to marry him in their backyard on a beautiful warm spring night underneath the string lights they had put up together a few days before.

love note

The centerpieces were one of the highlights of the evening. Mike and Enrique had something totally different in mind but when they went to meet with their florist to see a mockup, he presented them with his vision for us which incorporated a hint of what they wanted but with his professional spin on it. They had a tall centerpiece and a lower one and alternated them on the tables. They were modern yet romantic and whimsical and really helped draw in the autumn vibe.

They always knew they wanted to get married, but it wasn't until the recent marriage ruling that they decided to tie the knot.

love note

The ceremony itself was definitely the highlight of wedding for the couple. Having their friends and family there to witness their commitment to each other and hearing their personalized, written vows was very special for both of them

Andrea and Armen met in 1984 while waiting in line to enter a Harbor Cruise Party. They entered the party together and talked and danced the night away. After years of turning down his marriage proposal, she came to the realization that their commitment to one another was forever and deserving of a spiritual union.

love note

With a very intimate guest list of only 30 people, the couple wanted to create an experience for their guests that was indicative of their metropolitan lifestyle. Lighting design played a big role. They warmed up the room with soft blush uprights, pin spots to highlight their cake and a stylish lighting pattern on the wall that mimiced the laser cut design on their invitations. The overall event styling was romantic and sophisticated.

love story

Marisa and Gerri technically met in 2006 at Gerri’s brother’s wedding (his wife was childhood friends with Marisa), although Gerri does not remember this introduction. Fast forward to 2013 when Gerri traveled home to Tuscon to celebrate her nephew’s 2nd birthday. Seated right next to her at the Shabbat dinner table was Marisa, who was in town and staying with Gerri’s parents for the weekend. Gerri’s brother and sister-in-law had convinced Marisa to come to document their son’s birthday celebration (Marisa is a photographer), but their secret plan was for them to meet. And it worked! By the time Gerri and Marisa left on Monday, there was a palpable connection between them.

love note

One of Gerri and Marisa’s fondest moments was the revealing of a cake in the shape of Marisa's camera with the view screen showing their dog, Koda. They did their "cake cutting" with donuts, but Gerri wanted to surprise Marisa since she had really wanted a wedding cake.

love story

Lauren and Barrie met in the spring of 2010 through their mutual friends. Barrie proposed in May of 2014 on the greenbelt walking path where they live while walking to breakfast with their dog Sophie. Lauren was completely surprised and they afterwards celebrated in Laguna Beach for the weekend.

love note

During the ceremony Lauren and Barrie’s officiant asked them to turn around and wave to their friends and family in the audience before saying their vows. It was an incredible special moment to see all the people they love and care for in their lives all together in one place.

love story

Andrew proposed to Kristen while on a trip to Costa Rica. After spending the first day of their trip exploring, Andrew took Kristen to a private beach and asked for her hand under the stars. The rest of the trip was spent celebrating their engagement!

love note

As a surprise for Andrew, Kristen had the opening song from Forest Gump, his favorite movie, play as she walked down the aisle. The addition of this sweet sentiment created a special moment for just the two of them to share.

love story

Brandon was living in Ohio and Jazmin was living in California. Jazmin’s sister was married to one of Brandon’s lifelong friends in Ohio. When she gave birth to her second child, Jazmin came from California to help with the new baby. After being in Ohio for a few days, Jazmin and Brandon ended up at the same party where they shared a few playful glances across the room before eventually talking to each other the rest of the night. Jazmin’s charm and wit was undeniable, and Brandon knew he better stay sharp if he had any chance of winning her heart.

Jazmin

romantic to go with their venue. After a couple of meetings with their florist, they came up with a rustic glam wedding. Jazmin loves the look of neutrals mixed in with a pop of pastels. They added the glam element by adding a chandelier and crystal beadings hanging from the archway, as well as the pearl beading on her dress and bouquets.
