Experience VS Certification! Who Will Survive The Competition?

Introduction

ď‚´ Hello Everyone, First, I would like to thank Certification Planner to help me write this article which I was planning from 3 years. My name is David Wash and I work with one of the leading travel company in the world as Senior Program Manager. After working in the Project Management domain for about 22 years, one day my CEO asked me to get PMP certified. With 1000's of projects under my belt, this came as a surprise to me "why I should get certified when I already have the knowledge, proven techniques, and experience to demonstrate my skills.

1. Redundant knowledge transfer: ď‚´ A major reason why I believed that certification courses would be ineffective, especially in cases like mine, was that I already had the knowledge that I was supposed to gain by the training.

2. Extra investment in finance and time:  Most of the high-end certification courses do not come cheap.  It is justified to spend money on learning something new, but, spending big bucks on something that I was already an expert at just didn’t sound right.

3. Lack of real-time application:

ď‚´ Another reason why I was against the certification was lack of application exposure. ď‚´ Yes, the training providers include multiple case studies, but the scope of problems mentioned in these case studies might be very different from my problems and thus the solution must be different as well.

Daniel listed a couple of points as to how certification can be helpful even in my case. 1. Show the willingness to learn 2. Becoming more marketable 3. Updating our skill base
