Today the park protects nearly 5,000 known archaeological sites, including 600 cliff dwellings. The entrance is along Hwy.160 between Mancos and Cortez and about 35 miles west of Durango. Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve
Set against the steep Sangre de Cristo mountain range, spreading across 150,000 acres, the Park and Preserve feature the tallest sand dunes in North America, and various plants and trees of cultural importance for 9,000+ years. Open year-round, 24 hours a day, visitors will experience a diverse landscape of grasslands, wetlands, conifer and aspen forests, alpine lakes, and tundra. Stretches 500 miles from Durango to Denver traveling through the Rocky Mountains amongst peaks with lakes, creeks and diverse ecosystems. Trail users experience six wilderness areas and eight mountain ranges topping out at 13,271 ft., just below Coney Summit at 13,334 ft. The average elevation is over 10,300 ft. and it rises and falls dramatically. Users traveling from Denver to Durango will climb 89,354 ft. Great for hikers, horseback riders and mountain bikers.
