4 California Science Center, Ecosystems Gallery ŠTracie Spence Photography
Downtown L.A.’s Exposition Park includes the California Science Center, the Natural History Museum and the California African American Museum. Just north of downtown and next to the Los Angeles Zoo is the Autry National Center. In the mid-Wilshire area of the city (often referred to as Museum Row) is a group of must-see museums, featuring the LA County Museum of Art (LACMA), Page Museum at the La Brea Tar Pits and the Petersen Automotive Museum. The collections of the J. Paul Getty Museum can be viewed at the Getty Center in Brentwood and the Getty Villa in Malibu. Also on the Westside of LA is the Annenberg Space for Photography. Pasadena is home to the Norton Simon Museum and the PaciďŹ c Asia Museum, while history buffs can tour the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library & Museum in Simi Valley. Hollywood is home to Madame Tussauds, the Hollywood Wax Museum, Hollywood Museum and many entertainment landmarks including the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Long Beach and the San Pedro area offer smaller museums and some awesome ships like the Queen Mary and the USS Iowa. The museum entry fees are generally very affordable. You can take your camera, although some museums prohibit ash photography and many do not allow the use of a tripod. Children are welcome in most museums, with many offering hands-on exhibits and special activities for kids. In addition to museums, the region is full of historic sites so keep an eye out for signage identifying these interesting and historic locations. L.A.’s thriving gallery scene can be experienced in Chinatown, Bergamot Station in Santa Monica and the NoHo Arts District (North Hollywood). Monthly art walks take place throughout the area. Explore and enjoy!
