ABOUT THE MASTER
ARCHITECTURE IS A NONSTOP CAREER. THERE ARE ALWAYS GOING TO BE CHANGES IN TECHNOLOGY, NEW THEORIES, NEW MATERIALS, ETC. TO BE BETTER AT WHAT WE DO; WE SHOULD FOLLOW THE CHANGES; KEEP ON RESEARCHING AND LEARNING ON WAYS TO IMPROVE THE WAY OF LIFE. THE TRICONTINENTAL MASTER WAS AN EXPERIENCE THAT GAVE US THE OPPORTUNITY TO STUDY HOW THE WORLD OF ARCHITECTURE BEHAVES IN THREE DIFFERENT CULTURES.

1.0 MADRID EXPERIENCE 5
MADRID WAS A JOYFULL EXPERIENCE, SINCE IT WAS THE BEGGING. WE HAD TON OF EXPECTATIONS THAT THROUGH OUT TIME WHERE FUFILLED. AT THE BEGGINING WE HAD SHORT THEORICAL WORKSHOPS THAT WERE FOCUSED IN EXPLODING OUR CREATIVITY IN TERMS OF THINKING IN DIFFERENT METODOLOGIES TO DESIGN. THEN WE HAD A SERIES OF PROFESSIONAL VISITS AND LECTURES THAT TALKED ABOUT DIFFICULT TIMES IN SPAIN. HOW ARCHITECTS SHOULD START ON LOOKING THROUGH WAYS TO ADAPT THEIR MIND AND BE MORE FLEXIBLE IN TERMS OF PROJECTS, IDEAS, ETC.

1.MADRID AN ATLAS FOR A DUPLICATED REALITY IS A RESEARCH STUDY WORKSHOP THAT STARTED WITH MADRID RIO, AS AN EXAMPLE OF A COMPLICATED REALITY. A REALITY THAT HAS GONE THROUGH A DEEP TRAUMATIC HISTORY AND THAT HAS SEEN A RADICAL MODIFICATION IN ITS EXISTENCE. THE TRANSFORMATION OF NOT ONLY THE PROGRAM IN ITS SURFACE, BUT ALSO THE SURROUNDINGS AND THE INFRASTRUCTURE HAS BROUGHT A NEW REALITY, NEW USERS AND NEW NATURAL LIFE; THAT PERMITS AND CREATES A NEW DEBATE OF REALITY AND THE MULTIPLE FACES INTO WHICH THIS PARK CAN BECOME IN PEOPLE'S IMAGINATION.
RESEARCH

SO THE IDEA WAS TO ANALYZE AND RECOLLECT DATA OF THE NEW REALITY OF THE PLACE TO UNDERSTAND HOW COULD THE PARK KEEP ON TRANSFORMING ITSELF USING THE NEW EXISTING REALITY AND IMPLEMENTING THE IMAGINATION AND THE APARENT REALITY OF THE PEOPLE. AREAL PICTURE OF MADRID RIO BY:

1.MADRID MADRID RIO HAS CHANGE NOT ONLY THE LIFE OF THE PEOPLE BUT THE LIFE OF ANIMALS AS WELL. IT IS INCREDIBLE THE DIFFERENT AMOUNT OF NEW SPECIES THAT COME TO VISIT AND ENJOY THE PLACE. FOR EXAMPLE HUMAN'S BEST COMPANION, DOGS! EVERYDAY, A VARIETY OF DOGS NO MATTER THE BREED OR THE SIZE, VISIT THIS WONDERFUL PARK WITH THEIR OWNERS.
RESEARCH
1.1 AN ATLAS FOR DUPLICATED REALITY PROF. NESTOR MONTENEGRO + TONI GELABERT 9
WEIRD FACTS ABOUT THE PARK: DID YOU KNOW THAT YOU CAN ONLY RELEASE YOUR DOG IN MADRID RIO AT A CERTAIN HOUR OF THE DAY? BUT, DID YOU KNOW THAT THERE ARE THREE SPOTS IN THE WHOLE PARK WHERE DOGS OF ALL SIZES ARE BEING RELEASE (WITHOUT A LEASH) NO MATTER THE TIME? DID YOU KNOW THAT THESE PLACES WERE NOT DESIGN FOR THAT PURPOSE?

1.MADRID WHICH IS THE COMMAND DENOMINATOR BETWEEN THIS THREE AREAS OF MADRID RIO? THE ISOLATION OF THE SPACE BECAUSE OF THE DIFFERENT BOUNDARIES THAT SURROUNDS THE AREAS. IF THIS PLACES ARE SO ISOLATED WHY ARE THEY BEING USED JUST BY DOGS? WHAT HAPPENDS TO THE PERCEPTION OF THE SPACE, IF WE CHANGE THE DOGS? WHAT HAPPENS TO THE PERCEPTION OF THE SPACE IF WE CHANGE THE ANIMALS BOUNDARIES?

REAL FICTION:
FICTION IS A MADE UP STORY. AN IMPROVISE INVENTION. BY DOING A SMALL THING (CHANGING THE ANIMAL THIS COULD ACTUALLY WORK IN THIS AREA OF MADRID RIO.
18
1.MADRID REAL AND IMAGINARY:
A BOUNDARY MAY REFER TO THE EDGE OR THE MARGIN BETWEEN TWO SPACES. YOUR IMAGINATION IS A KIND OF BOUNDARY THAT SEPARATES THE REAL FROM THE IMAGINABLE.

1.MADRID 01 MATTER AND CONFORMATION: INSTRUMENTAL INFORMATION 02.03 – ASSEMBLY LOCATED ON A DENSELY VEGETATED SITE IN LAKE AUSTIN, THE PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE CONNECTS THE MAIN HOUSE ON THE PROPERTY WITH A NEWLY CONSTRUCTED GUEST HOUSE. WITH A DESIGN INSPIRED BY THE REEDS AND THE OTHER NATIVE VEGETATION THAT COVER THE SHORES OF THE LAKE, THE BRIDGE IS A LIGHT AND MAINTENANCE-FREE STRUCTURE THAT IS WELL-INTEGRATED WITHIN ITS WETLAND SETTING. THE BARS/REEDS INTERTWINE AT THE ABUTMENTS AND "GROW" OVER THE BRIDGE, CAMOUFLAGING IT AND TRANSFORMING THE BRIDGE INTO A SYMBIOTIC, ALMOST INVISIBLE LINK. THERE IS A CLEAR VIEW OF HOW THE BRIDGE WAS ASSEMBLE. THE MATERIAL USED TO BUILT THE BRIDGE EXPRESSES LIGHTNESS AND SIMPLISITY. IT DOESN'T WANT TO BE THE MAIN PIECE IN THE PUZZEL, INSTEAD IT WANTS TO BLEND WITH THE OTHER ELEMENTS AROUND IT.

1.MADRID 01 MATTER AND CONTENT: ENCODED INFORMATION 02.03 – CONTEXTUALIZATION SLIGHTLY CAMOUFLAGED AGAINST A BACKDROP OF THIN, CLOSELY-FITTED TREES IS A BIZZARE HOME DESIGNED TO LOOK LIKE A HUGE PILE OF TIMBER. SEEMINGLY CARVED OUT OF THE TREES THAT SURROUND IT, THE TREE TRUNK GARDEN HOUSE IN HILVERSUM IS A MODERN TAKE ON A MINIMALIST WOODEN HOME. DREAMED UP AND CONSTRUCTED BY PIET HEIN EEK, THE HOME IS ACTUALLY A TINY WORKSPACE FOR ARTIST AND MUSICIAN HANS LIBERG. AN INSIDE LOOK REVEALS A SET OF SMALL WINDOWS ON THE FRONT MADE OUT OF STEEL AND PLASTIC THAT ALLOWS FOR FULL VENTILATION INSIDE THE SMALL CABIN. WITH ONLY SMALL BENCHES, A DESK AND A FEW BOOKSHELVES, THE TREE TRUNK HOUSES IS A FRESH TAKE ON EARTHY MINIMALIST ARCHITECTURE. THE MATERIAL FOR THE FACADE CREATES AN OPTIC EFFECT. IF YOU WALK TOWARDS TREES YOU SEE A PILE OF TREES.

SHANGHAI WAS A NEW EXPERIENCE FOR US IN EVERY ASPECT. DIFFERENT CULTURE, DIFFERENT LANGUAGE, DIFFERENT WAY OF THINKING AND DIFFERENT WORK FLOW. SINCE DAY ONE WE REALIZE HOW FAST PEOPLE LIVE. IN ARCHITECTURE PRECISION AND DETAILS WERE NOT THE PRIORITY; INSTEAD, VERSATILITY AND SHARED WORK BETWEEN GROUPS OR COMPANIES WERE THE KEY TO TAKE A PROJECT FOWARD. WE LEARNED TO WORK IN DIFFERENT SCALES AND TO VALUE THE LEVEL OF COMPETITION.

2.SHANGHAI THE PROJECT WAS TO PROPOSE DESIGN IDEAS FOR A SHOPPING CENTER AND TWO OFFICE TOWERS FOR THE LIJIA COMPANY IN SHANGHAI. THE CLIENT WANTED TO EXPERIMENT AND SEE SEVERAL IDEAS BEFORE CHOOSING THE FINAL PROPOSAL. THE TEAM LEADER FROM THE DEPARTMENT, ASK ME TO DESIGN MY OWN PROPOSAL, SINCE THERE WAS ANOTHER PERSON ALSO, WORKING ON THE PROJECT. THIS WAY WE AS A TEAM WILL HAVE DIFFERENT IDEAS AND PROPOSAL TO DISCUSS WITH THE CLIENT.

2.SHANGHAI FOR A SHOPPING MALL TO BE SUCCESSFUL, IT HAS TO HAVE A GREAT PUBLIC SPACE THAT INVITES PEOPLE TO WANT TO STAY (NOT JUST SHOP AND GO HOME). SO THE MOST IMPORTANT IDEA IS TO TRY TO INTEGRATE THE NORTH PARK INSIDE OUR PROJECT SITE. THEN, DESIGN A PUBLIC SPACE THAT WILL PROVIDE OPPORTUNITIES FOR MULTIPLE ACTIVITIES. THESE ACTIVITIES SHOULD LEAD TO THE INTERACTION AMONG USERS.

CHAMPAGNE CURTAIN BETS ON SUSTAINABILITY TRYING TO DISAPPEAR ARCHITECTURE; MELTING THE PROJECT WITHIN THE TERRITOY, BLURRING THE LINES BETWEEN ARCHITECTURE AND LANDSCAPE, BETWEEN PHYSICALITY AND IMMATERIALITY, BETWEEN PRESENCE AND ABSENCE. THE CURTAIN OF WATER HIDES THE PLACE INSIDE PARIS; CREATING A FLEXIBLE SPACE THAT COULD BE VISIBLE OR HIDDEN. THAT CHANGES IN TIME AND IN SPACE, THAT TRANSFORM ITSELF DEPENDING ON THE USE. BY CREATING A TRANSPARENT LIMIT, THAT CAN EASILY DISAPPEAR, WE CAN HAVE DIFFERENT USE AND USERS. PUBLIC SPACE IN THE MORNING. PRIVATE SPACE AT NIGHT. AT NIGHT IT RAINS CHAMPAGNE!

SAN DIEGO WAS AN INTERESTING EXPERIENCE PERSPECTIVE. AFTER SEEING THE BIG CITIES SCALES AND LEARNING HOW A CITY SHOULD WORK IN TERMS OF URBANISM; COMMING TO SAN DIEGO WAS TOTALLY DIFFERENT AND STRANGE. SAN DIEGO GEOGRAPHICALLY SPEAKING IS GREAT. THE BEACH CULTURE, THE COSMOPOLITAN CULTURE AT DOWNTOWN, THE CANYONS INSIDE THE CITY, THE WEATHER, ETC. BUT IN TERMS OF PUBLIC SPACE, PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION, ETC. THEY WERE STILL WORKING ON IT. SOON, WE REALIZE HOW MUCH POTENTIAL SAN DIEGO HAD. LUCKY FOR US THAT WAS OUR PROJECT ABOUT. URBANISM.

MIDWAY DISTRICT MIDWAY DISTRICT IS A LARGE INDUSTRIAL ZONE NEAR THE CENTER OF SAN DIEGO. IT IS DEFINED BY THE LARGE SUPER BLOCKS WHICH ARE HOME TO THE VALLEY VIEW CASINO ARENA, WAREHOUSE STORES, AND OTHER LARGE SCALE SHOPPING CENTERS. MIDWAY WAS ONCE THE LOCATION OF MUCH OF THE AVIATION RELATED FACTORIES, ALTHOUGH NOW MOST OF THE FACTORIES HAVE BEEN REPURPOSED. MIDWAY SEPARATES MANY POPULAR TOURISTS DESTINATIONS SUCH AS OLD TOWN, MISSION BAY, AND LIBERTY STATION.
PACIFIC CORRIDOR THE PACIFIC CORRIDOR IS A STRETCH OF HIGHWAY STARTING FROM BROADWAY AT DOWNTOWN SAN DIEGO AND CONTINUES NORTHBOUND UNTIL IT TRANSITIONS INTO FIESTA ISLAND RD. KNOWN FOR ITS HISTORIC USE AS PART OF A CONNECTION BETWEEN SAN DIEGO TO LOS ANGELES, PACIFIC HIGHWAY CORRIDOR GREW OVER THE YEARS TO BECOME SURROUNDED BY INDUSTRIAL FACTORIES THAT SOUGHT THE QUICK ACCESS TO THE FREEWAY SYSTEM AND CLOSE PROXIMITY TO THE MILITARY.
HARBOR ISLAND LOCATED DIRECTLY SOUTH OF THE AIRPORT, THE HARBOR ISLAND AREA AFFORDS SAN DIEGO'S VISITORS AN EXPANSIVE VIEW OF BAY ACTIVITIES. HARBOR ISLAND FEATURES A SHORELINE PATH FOR WALKERS, JOGGERS AND A ROUTE FOR BIKERS. HARBOR ISLAND HAS A LOT TO OFFER IN ITS TWO MILES OF BAY FRONT PROPERTY. WITH LARGE HOTELS, MARINAS AND SEVERAL RESTAURANTS, THE ISLAND IS UNDERUSED. A SHORELINE PATH COMPLETE WITH A PANORAMIC VIEW OF THE SAN DIEGO SKYLINE, CORONADO ISLAND, THE BIG BAY AND SEVERAL GRASSY AREAS TO PROVIDE PICNIC OPPORTUNITIES.

POINT OF INTEREST: SAN DIEGO IS A VERY INTERESTING COMMUNITY, WHICH CURRENTLY LACKS A FEELING OF CONNECTIVITY. THERE ARE MANY INTERESTING LACTATIONS THROUGHOUT THE HEART OF SAN DIEGO SUCH AS OLD TOWN, OCEAN BEACH, AND NTC BAY. HOWEVER, NONE OF THESE LOCATIONS ARE CONNECTED IN A MANNER THAT WOULD ALLOW FOR DIRECT TRANSIT BETWEEN THEM. THE DISTANCES BETWEEN MANY OF THESE MONUMENTAL LOCATIONS ARE PARTICULARLY SHORT IN MANY CASES, BUT TRAVEL TIME IS LONG FOR LACK OF A DIRECT PATH.

3.SAN DIEGO EXISTING PARKING LOTS
HARD / IMPERVIOUS ASPHALT SURFACES
MIDWAY DISTRICT HAS AN ALARMING TOTAL AREA OF LAND COVERED WITH ASPHAL PARKING LOTS. THESE PARCELS OF LAND CAN BE MUCH MORE CONSERVATIVELY DESIGNED ALLOWING FOR MORE GREEN LANDSCAPE; REPURPOSED INTO INCREASED USABLE SPACE FOR THE GREATER GENERAL PUBLIC.
AREAS WITH POTENTIAL FOR DEVELOPMENT
PARKS / PRESERVED AREAS - CANYONS WATER FRONT - COAST / COVE / BAY RESIDUAL AREAS FROM HIGHWAYS AND ROADS WETLANDS
THE OPPORTUNITIES WITHIN MIDWAY FOR DEVELOPMENT ARE VAST. STARTING WITH THE WET LANDS. WHICH ARE IN TERRIBLE NEED OF REVIVING, TO THE CANYONS WHICH HAVE BEEN SEEMINGLY HIDDEN TO KEEP OUT OF SIGHT. ALSO, UNUSED REAL ESTATE AFTER RENOVATING THE SPORADIC ROADWAY SYSTEM CAN BE REPURPOSED INTO ADDITIONAL PEDESTRIAN FRIENDLY GREEN PUBLIC SPACES. LAND USES: THE CURRENT MIDWAY LAND USE DISPOSITION IS VERY DIRECT, STRICT ZONNING RULES PROMOTED A VERY ISOLATING LAYOUT OF THE NEIGHBORHOOD. INSTEAD OF ISOLATING, A MIXED USE PLAN AND LAYOUT SHOULD BE IMPLEMENTED, GROUPING WITHIN REASON THE VARIOUS LAND USES TO CREATE A MORE CONNECTED AND DIVERSE COMMUNITY. IN PLACING THE COMMUNITY CLOSER TO ITS RESIDENCE, THROUGH CONSCIOUS DESIGN CHOICES, THE EXPERIENCE FOR PEDESTRIANS AND TOURISTS ALIKE CAN BE GREATLY ENHANCED.

MIDWAY DISTRICT AND MISSION BAY AREA HAVE ATTRACTION 7 AFTER ATTRACTION TO OFFER ITS RESIDENTS AND THE OVER 30 MILLION WORLD TRAVELERS WHO VISIT SAN DIEGO YEAR AFTER YEAR. HOWEVER, MANY OF THE TOURIST POPULATION AND A GROWING NUMBER OF SAN DIEGANS ARE MUCH MORE ACCUSTOMED TO TRANSITING BY OTHER MEANS THAN THE AUTOMOBILE. UNFORTUNATELY, THE MANY GREAT DESTINATIONS THAT SAN DIEGO IS HOME TO ARE NOT EASILY NAVIGATED TO AND FROM BY ANY MEANS OTHER THAN AUTOMOTIVE VEHICLES. ADDRESSING THIS ISSUE WOULD BENEFIT THE TOURIST ECONOMY, THE COMMUNITY'S LIFESTYLE AND ABOVE ALL THE ENVIROMENT.

3.SAN DIEGO EXISTING ANALYSIS THE MIDWAY DISTRICT IS A PLACE WITH A LOT OF COMPLICATED PASSAGES, AND PATHS IN WHICH THE EXISTING PUBLIC SPACE ARE NOT LINKED OR CONNECTED TO EACH OTHER. THE URBAN LABYRINTH IS A PROJECT THAT INTEGRATES EXISTING PUBLIC SPACES WITH OUTDOOR CULTURAL ACTIVITIES, EDUCATIONAL ENVIROMENT AND LEISURE PUBLIC SPACING, CREATING A BETTER EXPERIENCE FOR THE CITY OF SAN DIEGO.
FINAL PROJECT 3.2 THE URBAN LABYRINTH
PROF. FRANK WOLDEN + MIKE STEPNER 89
SINCE MANY YEARS THE CITY OF SAN DIEGO HAS BEEN TRYING TO DO A BAY TO BAY CONNECTION. THEY HAVE BEEN STUDYING DIFFERENT WAYS TO MAKE THE DREAM COME TRUE, BUT BECAUSE OF MONEY ISSUES AND MANY REGULATIONS PROCEDURE THIS HASN'T BEEN POSSIBLE. HOWEVER, WE AS A GROUP TOOK THE CHALLENGE OF PROPOSING A LINK CONNECTION FROM BAY TO BAY AS GREEN PATHS, INSTEAD OF A LITERAL WATER CONNECTION. THE CONNECTION WILL START WITH THE NTC BAY AND WILL GO ALL THE WAY NORTH.
90
3.SAN DIEGO EXISTING ANALYSIS THIS AREA HAS GOOD THINGS AND BAD THINGS. THE GOOD THINGS ARE THE NATURAL RESOURCES THAT SAN DIEGO HAS. FOR EXAMPLE THE NTC BAY. HOWEVER, WE BELIEVE THAT THE BAY IS UNDERUTILICE AND CAN BE MORE THAN JUST A VIEWING EXPERIENCE. RIGHT NOW THE BAY IS DIVIDED IN TWO. THE WEST SIDE AND THE EAST SIDE. AT THE EAST WE HAVE THE MARINE CORP RECRUIT DEPOT; A NAVY FACILITY, WHICH OWNS MOST OF THE GREEN AREAS OF THE PLACE, INCLUDING THE EAST SIDE OF THE BAY. AT THE WEST WE HAVE THE NTC PARK A GREEN PUBLIC SPACE THAT ENJOYS THE VIEW OF THE BAY. HOWEVER IT LACKS OF PUBLIC UTILITIES AND THE PARK ENDS NOWHERE. IT HAS POOR CONNECTION TO THE SURROUNDING NEIGHBORHOODS AND REST OF THE CITY. AT THE NORTH EAST OF THE BAY WE HAVE THE OLD POST OFFICE BUILDING THAT RECENTLY BECAME AVAILABLE IN THE MARKET; THIS IS A GREAT OPPORTUNITY TO REUSE THE EXISTING BUILDING AS A PART OF THE PROPOSAL.

3.SAN DIEGO FOUR MAIN PROPOSAL: 1.NEGOTIATING WITH THE MARINE CORP DEPOT (MCRD) TO ADQUIRE THE LAND WHERE THE ADMIRAL'S HOUSES ARE AND RELOCATE THE FAMILIES TO THE NEW TOWN. THIS WAY WE CAN OPEN THE SPACE AND HAVE A BETTER CONNECTION WITH THE NEAR NEIBORHOODS AND THE REST OF THE CITY. BY REUSING THE EXISTING FAMILY HOUSES AND ADDING OTHER BUILDINGS WE INTRODUCE A NEW USE TO THE AREA, CULTURAL SPACES. THIS SPACES WILL BE AVAILABLE FOR ART EXPOSITIONS, WORKSHOPS, STUDY GROUP, FAIRS, ECT. THE IDEA OF THIS SPACES IS TO IMPLEMENT THE CULTURE OF LEARNING BEYOND THE WALLS OF A SCHOOL, MUSEUM OR LIBRARIES. (OUTDOOR EXPERIENCE.) THIS SPACES WILL MIX WITH THE EXISTING CAFES AND RESTAURANTS OF THE AREAS. 2.RECOVERING THE OLD POST OFFICE BUILDING AND TURNING IT INTO AN ART UNIVERSITY. THE OLD POST OFFICE SITE BECOMES AN ANCHOR POINT. THE UNIVERSITY FOLLOWS THE SAME IDEAS OF THE NEW CULTURAL SPACE. IN THIS BUILDING THERE WILL BE ALL KINDS OF ART STUDIES. ARCHITECTURE, FASHION DESIGN, JEWLERY DESIGN, ETC. THE GROUND FLOOR WILL WORK AS A PUBLIC SPACE, PROMOTING THE STUDENTS WORK.
