COURSE
Dynamic Simulation and Optimization
USING EMSO SIMULATOR ( Environment for Modeling, Simulation, and Optimization) A free powerful tool
INCHEMICAL ENGINEERING
The participants of the course will receive a certificate from the International Pilot School of Chemical Engineering of the Chemical Engineering program and Postgraduate Institute Alberto Luiz Coimbra from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, PEQ/COPPE-UFRJ.
JUSTIFICATION EMSO (Environment for Modeling, Simulation and Optimization) is a free C++ written graphical environment where the user can model complex processes simply selecting and connecting the equipment models. Emso is the unique Equation-Oriented simulator with units-of-measurement checking for the equations where models are written in a modeling language and the user does not need to be a programmer. The software has a built-in code for symbolic differentiation which enables the system to solve high-index problems like static simulation and dynamic simulation, static optimization, parameter estimation of static models and dynamic models. It is possible to embed some PlugIns (like vrtherm with more than 2000 substances properties) into the models to improve the performance and usefulness of the software.
MAIN OBJECTIVE
After attending lecture the student will use the Emso simulator to formulate and solve chemical engineering problems related with modeling, simulation, parameters estimation and optimization of some physical phenomena, process units and chemical plants.
METHODOLOGY After study the structure of the software and some general concepts, the different topics of the course will be addressed through the solution of specific situation using the software and with the methodology of learning by doing and practicing. In every part of the course a different problem will be actively solved while a detailed results analysis and feedback of the difficulties will be done. It is recommended that every student has its own laptop.
PROGRAM (I) Introduction to the process simulator EMSO, installation procedure and system architecture. (ii) Basic concepts on object oriented modeling and differential-algebraic equation (DAE) systems. (iii) Advanced modeling and flowsheet building. (iv) Stationary and dynamic process simulations (reactor, distillation columns, heat exchangers). (v) Stationary and dynamic parameter estimation. (vi) Data reconciliation and process optimization. (vii) Realtime application using EMSO-OPC interface.
