Nightfall-Tucson’s Haunted Town Last weekend, Hady, Haibo, and Logan took a group of students to Tucson’s most famous haunted town—Nightfall at Old Tucson! Students got to see it all: from haunted trails and houses filled with zombies, swamp people and killer clowns (yikes), to a comedy show where the audience was infected with “Jack and the Box’s Die or Rea Toxin,” the group had an absolute blast. Sprinkle in moments that you just cannot make up (Abdullah getting “jump scared” so that he fell and dropped his cheesy fries ALL over himself and Logan), and this trip was one we will not soon forget.

Student Spotlight! CESL student worker Nwaf sat down with a CESL student to ask him some questions. Name: Mohamed A. Mohamed Hometown: Khartum, Sudan
Level: U-Track Interviewed by: Nwaf Alghamdi
Hi Mohammed! Why did you pick GIS as the major you want to purse in your graduate studies? I like helping people, and GIS allows me to help people by analyzing geographical data and make a sense of it. We make lives easier by integration data with maps and give people meaningful maps of the world. I also picked it for two other reasons as well: the first is because I'm interested in urban planning, and the second is I want to help by monitoring global phenomena such as climate change.. I know that you were somewhere else in the US before coming here—tell us your story and how did you end up in Tucson? I first went to Chicago and stayed there for about 3 months. After that, I moved to Fargo, ND for 2 months, and then Forman, ND for 7 months. How did you like Chicago? I really liked Chicago; I enjoyed my time there very much. I used an app called MeetUp to find people with common interests. I made so many friends and I'm still in touch with many of them. They were nice enough to invite me to various things— from big musical events to even business conferences, and I was always happy to join.
Mohamed & Nwaf
What took you to North Dakota? I worked in North Dakota for a while. I was first in Fargo, which is a mid-sized town, but then went to an even smaller town called Forman. Forman had only about 600 people, so as an outsider I stood out. People were curious but generally I made some good friends and blended in pretty well. I've also got know friends who are Native Americans and they taught me a lot of things about their culture, which was fascinating to me. Since it was a small town, how did you manage to live there while being in a very different environment? I'm a goal oriented person, so I'm very practical. I work with what I have to achieve my goals, and I always kept my goal of studying and graduating ahead of me, which helps to cope. What shocked you the most since you came to the US?? I thought my English was very good, until I tried to listen to someone here with a southern accent. I struggled a lot to understand him. Also, on another note, I've learned something about the society here. The American society is very individualistic. If you share common interests with a person here, they will be happy to be your friend.

Student Spotlight! CESL student worker Hady sat down with a CESL student to ask him some questions. Name: Abdullah Ibrahim Hometown: Madina, Saudi Arabia
Level: U-Track Interviewed by: Hady Mambo
Hey Abdullah, how are you. Can you tell us a bit about yourself? Hey Hady, I’m great, thanks. Well, that’s a little bit hard, but here it goes. As you already know, My name is Abdullah. I’m from Madina, Saudi Arabia. I’m passionate about Mechanical Engineering and I am a very independent person. Since you are passionate about mechanical engineering, I am guessing that is your major? Yes you are right. I have an associate degree in Mechanical Engineering. I have worked in this field for three years and have vast experience in it. My purpose is to continue studying and enhance my knowledge in this field. That is amazing, Abdullah. How did you come to like engineering so much? It all started in my family actually. My father is in aerospace mechanical engineer, my brother is in mechanical engineering, and my uncle, who is my role model, he is a mechanical and chemical engineer. He is a very successful person and I want to be just like him.
Hady & Abdullah
What do you usually do for fun back home and here in Tucson? Back home I like the gatherings between me, my friends and my cousins. We usually gather in casinos and spend good times there. Here, I do not have much time for that, but whenever I can, I go to some restaurants at Main Gate or downtown. How has your experience here in the US been? This is not my first time here, but it has been great. My first time was three years ago when I went to Oklahoma to do a course for my company. Also, a year ago, I lived and studied English in LA before coming to Tucson. How different is it living and studying in LA and in here in Tucson? It is very different. I feel like studying here is way better because CESL provides a good program to efficiently learn English. In regards to the city, LA is distracting if you wanna focus and do well in school. I think coming to Tucson was an excellent idea. Do you have advice for those who want to come to CESL/UA so they do well in school? My advice for everyone, especially us international students, is that in order to do well, we need to set goals in life and be focused on what we came here for. There will be times for vacations and to have fun, but we must always remind ourselves of the goals we have set, so we can accomplish them.
