Pew Pew Pew Paintball! Last week was the highly anticipated trip to Disruptive Paintball in Tucson! Our painted warriors braved the heat to battle each other on three different courses. Students spent nearly three hours competing and having fun. In fact, the activity was so much fun that we were limited in the amount of photos we were able to take of the activity. Instead, enjoy several selfies of Student Worker Hady Mambo on page 2 as your consolation prize.

Dama Tournament Rages On The first ever CESL Dama Tournament is entering an unexpected second week of competition after delays sidetracked the play of games. Even with the delays, the action in the tournament has been compelling to say the least. One of the early favorites, Amer Almutairi, quickly dispatched his first-round opponent, Malik Alzakarzi (top left), before losing a highly contested heart-breaker to Hamad Alenezi in the second round. Elsewhere, Khaled Alenezi beat UA Volunteer Stephen Kim (left) in a close match in the first round, and Thanyan Alhassan easily defeated Naser Alajmi (bottom left). As this is a double-elimination tournament, it is still very much anyone’s competition to win. Keep an eye on Ahmed Hasan and Khaled Naser’s potential clash in the second semifinal.

Where is your favorite place in Tucson? Mount lemon! If you could learn to do anything, what would it be? Leadership skills.

Haibo & Haoming

Student Spotlight! CESL student worker Hady sat down with a CESL student to ask her some questions. Name: Yumiko Saito Interviewed by: Hady Mambo

Level: 8 Major: Psychology

Hometown: Kyoto, Japan

Hi Yumiko, Welcome back to CESL. How are you? I am pretty good, thanks. How do you feel being back to CESL after being here in the summer of last year? I am very excited and happy to be back. I loved being here in Tucson, specially learning English at CESL and that is one of the reasons that made me come back. Although, I was here before, I was very nervous on the first day because this time I came by myself and my friends who were here with me last time, were not. How did your friends, who were here with you in the summer, react when you told them that you were coming back? They were all very happy for me and sent many greetings to everybody here at CESL. Was it easy to blend in again and get used to the “CESL Life”? It was easier than the first time because I already knew the process and how things would go in regards to orientation and everything else.

Hady & Yumiko

How different do you see your classes now that you are studying without many people from your country (your friends)? I love my classes and my classmates, they are all very kind to me. My classes are very diverse, but I am the only Japanese student in there. The classes are about the same as before, very good, but I never get to speak my native language as often as I would do when I had my friends with me. When you went back home what was the most remarkable place or moment you would always remember from here? I would say that on top of everything it was the Grand Canyon. I loved being there and I might go there again during this session. When asked, how would you describe to your family and friends back home your experience here? I got a lot of friends from different parts of the world and some of them have been to the states. The way I would describe my experience when I first came, would be: a trip with many unforgettable memories and amazing people. This first experience I had made me want to study international relationships, which is what I will do here at UofA after this session. I’m glad to know, Yumiko. What are your plans after U-Track? After UofA, then I will go back to my country to continue my psychology major. I have noticed that you go to all of our activities and most of the clubs and we are very glad for that; what are the activities and clubs that you like the most? I love music club and table talk the most. Yes, you are right; I go to almost every activity and the reason why is that to me it is a way of relaxing, knowing many different places and meeting people outside of my classroom. What are your English learning strategies for this session? I love talking to people, especially from other cultures and it has helped me learn and improve my English a lot. I am trying to speak English and Arabic more frequently because they are the most common languages my friends speak. English is the language I came to learn, but I have now many friends who speak Arabic and I am trying to learn their language too. Thanks for your time, Yumiko. Welcome back, we wish you good luck and enjoy your studies!
