CESL Travels to the Renaissance Last week, 15 CESL-ians made the trek up east of Phoenix to attend the Arizona Renaissance Festival. They were greeted with a festival in another time where they witnessed comedy shows, wandering minstrels, boisterous royalty, and knights competing in jousting competitions for their queen’s honor. “I did not want to leave,” said CESL student Abdul Rahman. “It was such a good time.” Food and fun aplenty, we can’t blame him for feeling that way.

Level: 9 Interviewed by: Haibo Sun
Hello Jiyun, how are you? Could you tell us something about yourself? Hi, I come from Gansu province located in western China. The most famous food of my hometown is Lanzhou ramen. How often do you play sports? I like running and playing basketball every two days or so. What else do you like? I also like to play video games, make some video clips, and read books or magazines related to astronomy. What types of videos do you usually like to make? I record videos of my daily life usually, and share them on social media. What is your ideal way to spend your weekend? I like to go shopping, hang out with friends, and buy groceries to prepare food for the following week.
Haibo & Jiyun
Do you like to travel? Yeah, I always travel during school breaks because doing so makes me feel a certain degree of freedom and opens me up to new experiences. Do you have anything you want to do in the future? Yes, I want to get a doctorate degree in Astronomy from the UofA in order to become an astronomy professor. In this way I will be able to share my knowledge and encourage people to love astronomy. Thanks, Jiyun! 6

Student Spotlight! CESL student worker Hady sat down with a CESL student to ask him some questions. Name: Helal Alharbi Hometown: Hafr Al Batin, Saudi Arabia Major: Law
Level: 2 Interviewed by: Hady Mambo
What is one word that can be used to describe you? I think the word ‘business.’ I am good at it. I studied business back home and have a Bachelor’s degree in it. I work in a company back home in Saudi Arabia. So what made you come to CESL if you are working already? I want to get my Masters degree in Business Law after I finish studying at CESL. What do you think about CESL so far? From what I have seen so far, it is a very good place to study. I already feel at home here, and it’s helped me a lot to have a community where I have classmates and teachers as part of my family.
Helal & Hady What do you usually do for fun in your free time? I like to read in English, play Uno, and play Baloot. Recently I won a competition in Saudi Arabia playing baloot and they gave me and my team a very good amount of money and a trophy. Very impressive. Has your business background helped you in that game? Definitely. This game is all about strategies and critical thinking, predicting what other players may play. My experience in business gives me an advantage against other competitors. What is the most traditional food from your home? Is it kabsa? Yes you guessed right, but before you even ask, I do not know how to make it. *both laughing* Good guess, Helal. I was going to ask you! Thanks for your time and we wish you good luck in your studies! 7
