CESL Dance Party Tonight! 8pm

Student Council helps celebrate a great session! p. 3

I Wanna Go Fast! Oh my, we had such a good time at Autobahn Indoor Speedway last Saturday. Though we were few, the competition was stiff and the tracks were fast. The winner of every race was our resident German student himself, Edwin Lachenschmid. That dude can FLY on the race track. Coming in 2nd was student worker Logan, with Hamad a very close 3rd. The award for most dangerous driver goes to Mohamed Mohamed, who caused no fewer than four stoppages by crashing into unsuspecting drivers (see bottom photo). Yujin was hands down the best female driver on the track (albeit by default), improving on her time with every lap. Honestly, we feel really bad for everyone who missed out; it was a fantastic day.

Student Spotlight! CESL student worker Haibo sat down with a CESL student to ask him some questions. Name: Ahmad Hasan Hometown: Kuwait City, Kuwait

Level: 7 Interviewed by: Haibo Sun

Hi Ahmad. Can you tell us something about your country? One of the popular spots is Kuwaiti Tower. Kuwait is not a big country, so you can travel from the north side to the south side in about 2.5 hours. What is something you like to do in your hometown? I like to go to a Japanese restaurant called MeMe Curry. Even though it is a Japanese restaurant, the people who cook it are from Kuwait. I like to eat there the most, because it is the first curry-specialized restaurant in Kuwait. What do you think about becoming involved with other cultures? I was really interested in Japanese culture before I came here, but getting in touch with diverse cultures in the U.S. makes me expand my horizon and helps me to know more different cultures.

Haibo & Ahmad

Have you learned anything from those different cultures? It makes me become more organized, since I watched how other people do things and utilize their advantages. I am learning to do this myself. What made you choose CESL? I want to improve my English so I can get into a university in the U.S., but haven’t decided on a specific university yet. It probably will not be the UofA because they do not have Petroleum Engineering and that is my intended major. What are you going to do after you graduate? I want to go back to my country and work in the petroleum field, since I want to work in my home country and stay with my family. Thank you for sharing your experience, and I hope you can get into your dream university!

Student Spotlight! CESL student worker Nwaf sat down with a CESL student to ask her some questions. Name: Yuko Nakao Hometown: Kyoto, Japan

Level: 5 (Part-time) Interviewed by: Nwaf Alghamdi

Hi, Yuko. Welcome! Why are you studying English here at CESL? My husband is a visiting professor here at the university and I decided to use my time to improve my English. How long have you been in Tucson? Do you like it so far? I've been in Tucson for about a year now, but this is not my first time. I first came here for my honeymoon with my husband. I remember someone asking us in the airport why are we visiting, and when we told them it was for our honeymoon, they were shocked. It is really beautiful here. I'm glad you're having a good time here! What do you like about Tucson? I like the mountains, the food, and Nwaf & Yuko the people! The people here are very friendly and very kind. Tucson also introduced me to Jamaican food, which I've never tried in Japan. There is a Jamaican restaurant right next to where I live and I really like their food. It's healthy, spicy, and delicious! What do you like to do in your free time? I practice kendo, which is a samurai sport. It is a traditional game with bamboo swords. While it is a competitive game, it is based on the samurai teachings which emphasizes kindness and a lot of good things to live by. The game is mostly popular in the southern part of Japan. Also, I was just introduced by a friend to a game called Pickle Ball. It's a mix between tennis and table tennis, it is very interesting and fun to play. Have you been to any other places in Arizona besides Tucson? I went to the Grand Canyon and it was a really great experience! I really liked that I could see the stars at night, I don't think I have ever saw it like this in Japan because of all the light pollution. That was my first time to see the Milky Way! Tell me more about your hometown, Kyoto. What makes it unique? Kyoto is full of history—it is very historical and full of culture. We have many traditions, but one to mention is at time of feasts, some girls would wear a specific traditional dress and dance, sing, and perform to entertain people. These girls are called "Maiko". Thanks for your time, Yuko!
