SPRING I 2015 - WEEK 3

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT! Every week we will interview two CESL students. If you are willing to be interviewed, talk to the student workers in the Student Learning Center.

Name: Juan Herrera

Hometown: Bogota, Columbia

Age: 18

Level: 50

How long have you been in the U.S.? I have been here for 3 weeks

Wow! So you have just arrived, how do you like it so far?
I like it; it is nice. It is quieter and calmer here than it is in Bogota. Will you attend the University after CESL?
No, I would like to improve my English and then return to Columbia to complete my studies. Do you have an idea of what you would like to study?
Yes, I would like to do business. I do not yet know what I will do with my business degree though. What do your parents do?
My father is a doctor and my mother stays at home. My father is a cardiologist in a big hospital in the city.

Interviewed by Ann Turinawe

Is Bogota a crazy town?
It is very crowded! There are a lot of people and the traffic is bad, but there are more things to do in Bogota than in Tucson because everything is close. What do you like to listen to while you are stuck in traffic jams?
Carlos Vives! He is a very good singer. He sings about everything from what is happening in the country to songs about the club. Cool! So would you hear his songs in a coffee shop or in a very popular club?
You would probably hear his songs in a coffee shop. I will have to look him up! Besides the U.S., where else have you traveled?
I have been to Germany, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Turkey, Greece, Italy, Peru, Cuba, Canada, and Mexico! Wow, you have traveled a lot. Out of all of those places, what was your favorite place to visit?
I liked Greece the best, it was different. The architecture was very cool; it was designed like buildings from Greek history. I also really liked the people; they were very laid back. In Columbia, everyone is very social and likes to speak to everyone. Alright, last question. If you could be anything in the world, what would you be?
If I could be anyone in the world, I would be a soccer player like Cristiano Ronaldo. If I could do anything in the world, I would just travel all over the world. CESL WEEKLY NEWSLETTER

SPRING I 2015 - WEEK 3

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT! Name: Renhao Ye Hometown: Chongqing, China

Age: 23
 Level: 40

How long have you been at CESL? 3 months. This is my second session. It is my first time in America. What is your major? Philosophy. Occidental (or western) philosophy is the part of philosophy I want to study. Cool, and what about philosophy interests you? It tells you the way of how you watch this wold and the point of you. I also want to study the agriculture of grape wine and other spirits. Or quantum mechanics… What do you think is the most important philosophical question for our generation? The meaning of life and origin of the world. Where did we come from? Wow! Those are interesting topics. Where do you want to study? After CESL, I want to stay here in America, but maybe I will transfer to Caltech or Harvard. I don't think about this though, because I am down to earth. What are some of your hobbies? Mahjong. It is a Chinese game that we still don't know when it started, maybe the Tang dynasty. It is a very popular game, especially in my hometown. I also want to become a sommelier, which is a wine expert who could work in 5-star restaurants. A sommelier will know how to match food and wine and know everything about wine. What is something that surprised you about American culture? American people are very outgoing. When I was in LA ,a beggar asked me for money, so I gave her $20 but she saw that I had more money in my wallet and asked for more! They are too pushy and would ask for my debit card so they could go get food. But the American education is the most advanced in the world and Americans have very good manners and lots of Chinese people don't.

Interviewed by
 DJ Nixon

If you could be any animal for a day, what would you be? A phoenix because it is the queen. It is a beautiful bird that can be reborn in fire. It is the most beautiful animal. There is a Chinese proverb that says, "We want our sons to become dragons and our daughters to become Phoenixes.” Amazing! Is there something you want to tell all of CESL? Don't discriminate against homosexuals because some people have stereotypes about them, but many people don't know the theories or principles of being a homosexual so they don't have knowledge. People should know more about LGBTQI (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Inter-sexual). You can have your own opinion but there is no right or wrong. You just have to accept everyone's opinion. It is not a matter of right or wrong, it is just a discussion. I think everyone can be a teacher, so I can be a teacher. So, if you have any questions, come talk to me! CESL WEEKLY NEWSLETTER
