SPRING I 2015 - WEEK 7
STUDENT SPOTLIGHT! Every week we will interview two CESL students. If you are willing to be interviewed, talk to the student workers in the Student Learning Center.
Name:
Tom
Where are you from? Mongolia, the city of Ulaanbaatar. It is the capital of Mongolia. It is big; Mongolia only has 3 million people, and 1.5 million live in Ulaanbaatar. How long have you been in Tucson? I have been in Tucson for one year. The first months I spent traveling around the States, like Utah, New Mexico, and more. This is my second session at CESL. What are you studying and what are your plans after CESL? I will do my Masters in Metallurgy. What is Metallurgy and why do you want to study that? Metallurgy is a type of geology. There are many different types but this type studies how we can use the minerals in rocks - like what things we can make out of the metals. This is a good job because in Mongolia mining is very popular. We mine coal, copper, and gold. We have so much metal that we need to keep mining it.

 Tyler Goodwillie
What are some of your hobbies? I like to listen to music, and play piano and video games sometimes. Also, I like to snowboard during the winter in Mongolia. Awesome! Are there many places in Mongolia to snowboard? Is it very cold in the winter? Yes, we have mountains to snowboard. And it is extremely cold in the winter. In the places around the lakes and rivers it gets very cold, sometimes -40 degrees Celsius! What is the food like in Mongolia? We eat a lot of meat, especially during the winter because it is very cold so it gives us energy. What is one of your goals for the future? I would like to be a good engineer. And move back to Mongolia to work. CESL WEEKLY NEWSLETTER

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT! Name:
Ricardo Manjarrez
Hometown:
Sonora, México
Level:
40
Age:
32
Do you plan on attending the University after you leave CESL? No, I will stay until May and then I will return to Mexico and enroll in an intensive English program there. Oh, then are you attending CESL on behalf of your government or a job? Yes. I am a purchase manager for a company called Guaymas. The company exports fish oil and fish milk to other countries, mostly China, U.S., Israel, Canada, Chile, and Cuba. My boss wants us to improve our English for our jobs. I am good at listening, but I want to improve my speaking and increase my vocabulary. Your English is very good! So do you like Tucson so far? Yes, CESL is good because I get to meet other people from other countries and learn more about the world. Since you’re from Mexico, do you visit your family a lot? Not really. I visit my extended family for holidays, but my wife and children are here with me in Tucson so I do not return a lot. Do you feel like your transition into American culture is a little easier since Tucson is only two hours away from Sonora? Yeah, there are a lot of Mexican people and there are a lot of similarities between Tucson and my hometown. What specifically do you think is similar to Sonora? The food. I found a Mexican restaurant on Oracle called Guerro Canira that has really good Mexican food because the ingredients come from Mexico. You have to have the right ingredients in order to make good Mexican food. The weather is also the same. Tucson feels like home.
Interviewed by Ann Turinawe
Wow, I find that kind of surprising, but really cool! What are some differences that you have noticed? There are a lot of malls and more places to shop. It is also nice that it is two hours away from Phoenix because I like baseball. I like going to the spring training and MLB baseball games in Phoenix. How did you come to love baseball so much? I didn’t think it was a huge sport in Mexico. When I was 9, my father gave me my first Yankees baseball cap and I have loved them ever since. When I first started liking the Yankees in the early 1990s, they were not a very good team, but a few years later they won three championships back to back and I really started liking them. I collect all their hats and my wife always says that they all look the same or they are the same hat, but they’re not! Wow, that’s awesome. So who’s your favorite player? Derek Jeter. He works hard and is always very respectful. Do you like any American football teams? Yeah, I like the San Francisco 49ers, but I really like baseball a lot more. They have a lot of talent on their team, but they still have room to improve. Since you love sports so much, how come you do not pursue a career that is sports related? I have always wanted to open a sports bar in my hometown, a real sports bar that plays sports all the time and not like the ones who only play sports when there is a game playing on the television. I have wanted to do this since I was in college, but maybe one day or in 10 years I will be able to open a sports bar in Sonora.

Ask CESL Question: Now that finals are approaching, where can I go for a little extra help before the session ends? Answer: Search no further, because there are CESL teachers here to help you.
